Reel America: CBS News "Town Meeting of the World" - May 15, 1967
Fifty years ago, CBS broadcast an hour-long live program with Sen. Robert Kennedy (D-New York) and Gov. Ronald Reagan (R-California), taking questions via satellite from a group of international students in London. One of the participants was future U.S. Senator Bill Bradley (D-New Jersey), who was a student at Oxford. The topic was "The Image of America and the Youth of the World," and Kennedy and Reagan fielded critical questions about the Vietnam War. Prior to the program, we interview historian and Reagan biographer Paul Kengor, who has written about the broadcast.

Robert Francis Kennedy later regretted having debated Ronald Wilson Reagan!

He may have regretted the tactics he used in this forum. Reagan went right at the students questioning him, while Kennedy decided to try win the students over with a back and forth conversation. Unfortunately, Kennedy's tactics made him look unsure of himself, while Reagan came across as someone in charge.

Why are the students in black and white, but Reagan is in color?

The students are asking questions from London via satellite at the BBC. In 1967 it is likely that color was used in the U.S. by CBS, but via satellite color was not possible.

I’d have respected him a lot more if he was as quiet while Reagan was talking as Reagan was while he was talking.

Of course he did. Reagan was a dullard. Literally told a child that trees are the #1 polluter.

No, he didn't. Communism is the opposite of freedom, so does not deserve loyalty in any degree. You can't justify wrong by saying it's right to do right so it must follow it's right to do wrong.
