Ronald Reagan vs Berkeley's Radical Left - California Governor Takes on Anti-War Students (1967)

- On 3 May 1967, ITN's John Whale reported from the US state of California on the clash of ideologies unfolding between the left-wing students of Berkeley University and new right-wing Governor Ronald Reagan. Governing from the state capital of Sacramento, Reagan had demanded the university implement budget cuts and raise tution fees in an attempt to quell the student unrest that was rife of the University of California campus. Speaking to students at the renowned institution, Whale got a sense of the range of issues concerning students, chief among them the ongoing war in Vietnam. Interviewing Governor Reagan, meanwhile, offered Whale an opportunity to judge the seriousness of the actor-turned-politican. Had he underestimated the task of high level administration? And did he have ambitions for more senior political office?

"The man dressed like Tarzan, had hair like Jane, and smelled like Cheetah!!"
The war was Johnson’s war
Ah more pinko tripe. California was more prosperous than all of Britain under Reagan, and California companies were buying up British aggregate corporate entities and making them profitable. He actually won this battle and the Americans rewarded him with taking his view national. ITN seems to have a particular slant in this report.
California is now the 5th largest economy in the world (under a succession of democrat governors)
@@LeighRichards27oh the highest crime rates and the biggest exodus of people from Cali under that slick-haired bastard Gavin Threesome.
@@LeighRichards27What are you talking about? Under Democratic leadership, CA has become one of the worst economies in the country. They have the highest unemployment rate in the country, highest gas prices, highest taxes, highest homeless population. Thanks to their "green energy" policy, they have the highest utility rates in the nation (heck, they just added surcharges on utility bills... forcing the middle class to pay more, even if they're not using more). Now idiot Newsom has raised the minimum wage to $20 per hour for fast food workers (another job killing policy from Newsom).
Overtaxing, overspending and overregulating are the key reasons over 1.2 million people have recently left the State.... more than 35% than what NY lost!
I heard CA summed up perfectly the other day: The Golden State is killing the goose that laid its golden eggs!
@@danachille2830leftist governance has run such a beautiful state into the ground.

Freedom isn't free......but,....... I would have been against the Vietnam war too.
It's amazing to learn these kids have the same concerns as people today - amazing to hear even then, too, that they thought that in America, the battle is between "the right and the far right."
Lmao nooo
If you actually watch the video and remove your political bias glasses, you’ll see that these young people were against old people sending young men to die for a pointless war
Now who does that sound like to you? To me that sounds exactly like the democrat party. They are a bunch of warmongers who want to send young men to die so they can buy a bigger house
Wow, ITN didn't even try to hide it.
Deja vu
6:21 classic Boomer take. A selfish generation of brats that didn’t seem to notice that ‘50 year old congressmen’ would’ve already fought two world wars and a depression, and the ‘40 year old labourer’ would’ve fought in WWII and Korea.
@ 6:29 That boomer looks like solid snake I’m like …..DAVID?!
is this an argument in favor of endless war? anyway, such an innocuous statement this person made, that those who fight a particular war are logically the most concerned by it and you come with this brutal generalization? your comment reveals everything about you and nothing about this individual, much less an entire generation of people
Such objective “reporting”
6:29, a young terence mckenna, who would've then been a 20-year-old undergraduate
The ironies of American national politics. Vietnam was actually a war to secure Lyndon Johnson's reelection as President in 1968, for if Vietnam South fell to the communist North, Johnson feared that his political fate wold be the same as that of President Truman's in the Korean War. American politicians were confusing America's international relations with domestic politics. A flaw of American liberal thinking and philosophy.
And Ronald Reagan, here portraid as a war monger California Governor, used his powers later, as President, in an economic strategy to compel the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Unfortunately, Presidents GH Bush, Wm Clinton and GW Bush let the opportunity to promote a peaceful world slip through their hands. American liberals - and make no mistake, the Bush's are liberals - are very poor at International politics. Perhaps they;re just born that way.
Why did Johnson resign then if the war was only being fought to keep him in office?
