    Hi! I came across your video when I am scrolling on UA-cam looking for a massive change in my life/career. I have a degree in primary teaching, but currently working in healthcare and on the process of further training progression. It hit me really hard and realised it is not for me, that I can't work in the hospital for the rest of my life.
    I always like tech but no background on coding and stuff.
    I'm 32 years old now, thinking if I don't do something now then I'll regret it when I get older. You inspire me based on how you start your career,and how a risk taker you are. And really need to one!

    You have a beautiful story and are such an inspiration. Thank you for being honest and for not coddling us. You’re right about the degree, I graduated with my math degree with honors spring of 2023 had a scholarship to teach math and then became bedridden due to an injury. I can still code, and it led me on a different path. Due to my disability the department of rehab is paying for community college for me (coding classes, web development, SQL, etc). I'm taking what’s useful not to get a degree first and foremost because you need to be able to do the job to get hired they don’t hire because of a degree. May even try app academy but thankfully my dad is an amazing software developer with decades of experience and with my web development knowledge I have been able to work for him (unpaid to get experience) Wish me luck in finding a remote job and god bless!

    Its true what Isabella mentioned about jobs in italy require a degree to land a job. My hub had to obtain his degree and still gain coding skills (during his free time.) Anything is possible, just like Val has mentioned. There are free bootcamps, online. The only challenge is the time difference. (9+ hrs from Pacific Time) ... Also, search for your 1st dream job posts (looking into the required programming skills they need and gain those skills) this would be your starting points. Good luck!!! And Valerie!! You are doing awesome, keep sharing your journey and accomplishments. Such an inspiration ✨️ to all of us! 👍

    12:25 Further to add - I think networking is key, including with recruiters. At the end of the day, the degree-requirement is a filtering mechanism. While some recruiters/ HR people are dogmatic, if you rang recruiters and said "yeah I have years of experience in XYZ, tick all the boxes the position wants - but I didn't do a degree", I'm sure recruiters would be flexible. If you're new to the market, you could go down the uni route. But there's plenty of methods of breaking in - including getting your foot in the door of a company doing "any" job and then just pivoting into the software engineering side.

    Calculus was mentioned as a math goal. There are plenty of developers that made it on College Algebra! Most comp sci majors do take calculus but art majors who went to bootcamp don't have a calculus history. You'll learn algorithm design in your bootcamp. I know the word calculus can scare many who feel they aren't strong in math. You don't need calculus to be a developer :) I will say I'm taking it to challenge myself and because I like math! I encourage people to challenge themselves but definitely don't let math stop you. It stopped me years ago and I wish I'd known more. I would have gone a different route a long time ago.

      I've met several developers without degrees during my years working in tech.. I might be biased because I am also a dropout, but yea, they exist! I mean, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Mark Zuckerberg are all dropouts so you can infer from that haha

    I know job descriptions are just nice to haves like you said in the video, but for internships, if it says you have to be enrolled in college, do you just apply anyway? I guess the worse they can do is say no, but just wondering!

    Thank you for this video 💕 I’m still going back and forth with this career. I’ve been doing some free coding tutorials to get my feet wet in the meantime.
    Question: Do you feel mobile development provides limits compared to web? Or if you still think there’s lots of opportunity with mobile? Thank you!!

    • @BABEENGINEER
      @BABEENGINEER  Рік тому

      I don’t think there’s any limits. If you can do mobile development, you can learn web development and do that too if you wanted.

    What do you think of trying to pursue a Master's in CS with an unrelated bachelors? I have been taking undergrad courses for the past year to prepare to apply to some programs so that I fulfill the proficiencies. Feeling a little nervous about not being enough.
