    This is a great illustration of working adjacent to UX (marketing and web) and using that to shift right into a UX role/ or any role that really interests you. ALL the schooling and experiences built a solid foundation, including tattoo so recruiters who dismissed that aspect are just - ugh - uninformed. For anyone else looking for a UX role please do note that too many recruiters and corporate HR reps **do not understand this role AT ALL** so Lily's approach of going right to the UX people at the company is peak networking gold! this is so important. As a UX leader, there are several people who have reached out to me directly in the past who I continue to advocate for, and are top-of-mind when a UX role comes up.

    Our stories are kinda similar! For me though I worked in graphic design for 4 years, I quit my job bc I couldn’t take it anymore (I was underpaid, burnt out, underperforming, & it was super toxic work environment on top of everything) and I started to really regret my career choice. Working in design I was exposed to UX and became somewhat familiar with the very basics of it and I thought it was really interesting. I had been dreaming of making the switch for so long, I just didn’t know how until I forced myself to figure it out. Bc I was unemployed I couldn’t afford any classes, not even the Google UX course, instead I went to target and bought a notebook and watched every single free UX video and free resource I could find. I filled that entire notebook out, then I skimmed through my entire work history for any UX relevant thing I could find, polished it, did a few practice projects, and rebuilt my portfolio and resume. Then I just started applying everywhere. I got super lucky and landed my dream UX position that I thought I could only accomplish in my dreams lol. I did have imposter syndrome for the longest time, and maybe I was an imposter bc I didn’t have any formal UX training or education but I’ve learned so much in my position. I really threw myself out there and manifested and sometimes I still can’t believe I did this. It was worth all the pain I went through being unemployed 😅 idk why I watch these videos bc I have the job but I think I just love hearing peoples stories and finding other UX designers.

      What did you do to transit from gd to ux? What did you focus on learning specifically?

    • @brittanyk9577
      @brittanyk9577 Рік тому +17

      @@looksmatteronly It’s hard to say exactly where I started and got to where I did after but I will try my best! I started with researching common UX terminology and memorizing/writing down the definitions. Those definitions lead me to learning about UX processes such as the design thinking process aka definition, research, analysis, design, and validation. And also UX strategies and UX best practices, such as doing a competitive analysis. Learning the difference between UX and UI. I learned about the different types of UX such as UX Research, UX design, UX writing. I started following a lot of UX designers online and binging their content which lead me to discover more things to learn and research. I just kept going down rabbit hole after rabbit hole. OH and also even though I couldn’t afford the google UX certificate program, they have a FREE trial for a week, so I did the free trial and skimmed through as much as I could to try to catch definitions and more things to research. I only got about of weeks worth of learning out of the 6 months they offer but it was enough to get me some more exposure. I hope that helps! Honestly following designers online probably helped the most bc there are so many UX channels out there that want to help current or future UX designers like this one ❤

I spent the first three years just surviving. But that final year things started to atleast click. Perhaps part of it is knowing that your time is coming to an end and your brain just has to wake up and try to understand things for what they are (adapt), rather than trying to fight what you're being taught. You accept that you may not understand everything but you learn how to adapt is the biggest thing I've noticed.

    omg, i loved your personality!! so enjoyable to listen to your stories. you boosted my motivation to keep going! im facing exact same challenges in my life right now as you did. Graduated as an chemistry engineer, working in the bank, not happy with this job, feel like completely lost myself in this life. So i decided to find a ux ui designer position for myself in 2 month (last december to current day i was totally in studying and observing this designing field). Critical for me as i anounced my quitting from the current job. No way back. I know i will achieve my goals but anyway feels scary a lot. THank youu for the video!

    I've been doing UX/Product design for nearly 15 years and I'm still learning. Showing a willingness to learn, grow and develop is a mindset I look for in all designers I've hired and enjoy working with, regardless of experience. Unfortunately politics exist everywhere to some degree but providing designers keep enough focus on creating great things, refining their craft and putting users first, there is something to guide you. Whilst you hated that job in marketing, it will very likely pay off later down the line as you'll inevitably run into those people again as they tend to be the ones running companies. By being able to speak their language, you'll be able to help them understand the craft of making great products.

I'm currently in my last semester of Uni doing a course I hate, and honestly, my grades are about average, but dropping out and changing courses was never an option for me. I have started to learn graphic design on my own single few weeks, and I can spend hours on it and not get bored, unlike my degree, where I write 200 words and leave it for like a month or am physically unable to pay attention during lectures. I'm also working on my dissertation, and on the side, I study GD now. I hope to be able to get a GD apprenticeship, so after my graduation, I can start working with other designers and get hands-on experience! :D

    Hi Lily! New sub here! First of all,I’m so glad I was recommended this video, it just gave me a much needed boost of motivation lol. I’ve been trying to learn UX through online courses for about 3 months now, but it’s been hard for me to picture a positive outcome for myself because I feel so inexperienced and I lack the confidence as well.
    I have a question for you: Did you feel any form of imposter syndrome when applying for these positions? And if you did, did it ever, albeit momentarily, stop you from wanting to make the career switch? I’d love to hear your response❤
    I’d also like to ask if you have the links to some of the videos you used in your self-taught journey? I’m off to watching your previous uploads now lol, can’t wait to see what you put out next!

      Hello I'm glad you're here! Of course I felt some imposter syndrome along the way, I speak about that in some of my vlogs when I asked for a promotion, but the key is to be almost over-confident (or at least act like it). I mean confidence when reaching out to people, in your unique value and perspective, and in your vision of your new job/life in 3/6/12 months time. I did have moments where I thought am I going down the right path? Do I have the skills? Is this really my dream job? but I looked at this less as a "dream job" and more of a dream lifestyle - remote creative work from home, able to gym on my lunchbreak, chill colleagues/fun to work with. I wasn't going to settle until I found those things so the imposter syndrome died down.
      Also I'd really recommend the M3 material design website, lawsofUX.com, I watched these on my learning journey too:
