@@thepurplesband I don’t know Sam, nor was I on the tour but the first clip shows one car, so not sure what you infer by the ‘everyone’ comment ?

I have been a part of such a trip. Maybe some suggestions, mostly for the fast driving sections.
    1. Have a lead car, which is always doing the exact speed limit (or a bit faster if the driver is confident enough), cars behind will brake to a stop, wait 30s and then try to catch up. Lead car can be one car or rotate every 1h etc.
    2. Have a person who is always a map reader/spotter on the trip. The spotter is on the passenger seat of the lead car and will alert about the cars coming, police, pot holes, debris, animals etc over the radio.
    3. Take a radio/walkie talkie with an external on antenna which can be mounted on the car using magnets or something along those lines. Then the range will be up to 5km.

Shouldn't that be the logic of convoy driving:
-It's better that the lead goes too fast than too slow
-People follow according to their comfort levels, those who want to go slow stay at the back of the convoy
-The lead slows down every once in a while. This is logical because slowing down for a short while or taking a short pause isn't painfully uncomfortable to those wanting to drive spiritedly like following behind a Mr. Driving Miss Daisy all day would be. You want the lead to drive a bit too fast rather than too slow.
-Everyone should know the route before setting off. In modern days this should be incredibly easy with all the possible mapping app features for that, or with the "share my location"-feature. At minimum just plot the course on the nav and send a screenshot to everyone.
That's how we convoy'd with a Carrera GT.

Sam, I really loved this video. Being a Portuguese car enthusiast, I’ve driven many of the roads featured in the video. I love the roads in the interior of Alentejo and the Serra da Estrela nature park. I do not own a super car, but I can tell you those roads are just as exciting (and maybe more demanding) in my Diesel Volvo XC90. Keep up the great content!

Love the vibe of this video, but can't quite get my head around tours like this regarding the actual driving. Convoys are so conspicuous, just for starters, which is the last thing you want. Then there's the problem with pace. Whenever I've driven in convoys like this, you always have problems with mixed pace. Whether it's being held up or people being pushed beyond their comfort zone, that's no good. Finally, it's a bunch of people you don't know and thus you don't know the quality of their driving. From my experience, you want maximum three cars and everyone knows each other well. If you know each other well and someone does something slightly silly, it's much easier to tolerate, talk about if necessary or laugh about later. If someone you don't know does something you don't like the look of or is driving like a dick, it's far more problematic. It's fun to meet new people, but the appeal of driving with a bunch of randoms in this kind of setting eludes me. Maybe if you want to go at a relaxed touring pace it works. But if you want to really go at the roads, driving in a big group and with people you don't know is not the way to do it. That's much better in small groups where everyone trusts each other / understands each other.

7:00 Ye food and coffees are cheap, that's due to cheap labour mostly.
It's not like everything is perfect, a brand new BMW M2 will set you around 105.000€, where minimum wage is at about 820€.
    Used 987 Cayman S? around 45.000€
    A used E92 M3 molested? About 45.000€
Not everything is perfect, the good weather and great food as it's price, especially if you are a car guy in Portugal, it's painful.

Just a question but is it normal for someone in your country to expect to drive a new car that costs 9x their net annual salary (used your figures of net €12k per year)?
If I earned that amount per month I’d look to cut my cloth accordingly and get something like a decent MX5 for less than €10k (it’s not a flash car to impress the neighbours like a new M2 but one of the best drivers cars of all time).
Amazes me that people think they are compelled to live a lifestyle way beyond their means. To my mind being a car guy doesn’t depend on you driving an expensive car, just being someone that enjoys the pleasure of driving.

    • @Chico.00
      @Chico.00 5 місяців тому

@@sultanoftippoo3857 Well, I just wanted to illustrate the cost of new cars. That plays a huge role on the used car market...
I drive a car that is 1/4 of my gross wage, but it's a expensive shitbox.
      A nice MX-5 won't only set you 10.000€...
You can get a imported one from germany with lot's of rust and makeup selling for 10k, but the experience will be awful.
Rust, maintenance to do, lack of AC and Hard top, just makes the usability less and less.
A good NB (1.8 NBFL) is about 16.000€ with AC, a ND is about 23.000€ for the a decent used ND1 1.5...

Many years ago while the Trio was in their prime, I keep saying that the BBC needs to look ahead and slowly incorporate younger generation into the team. Jethro Bovingdon, Henry Catchpole, Chris Harris, Sam, they are the younger generation that we need to keep the machine of Top Gear going, like a multi-billion dollar corporation, you need succession planning. Imagine the world where Jeremy retired and we still have a team of Richard, James and Chris Harris, then when James retired, we still have Harris, Hammond and Catchpole, and Jethro was the +1 on their trips... The evolution of Top Gear will be as exciting as seeing the evolution of the Porsche 911. BBC in their capacity back then, couldn't comprehend the power the Top Gear. If Top Gear were spin off as an individual brand, it's a billion-dollar business, with their content, branding, live shows.

  • @neddy781

Serious question. Why hasn't Sam's UA-cam channel grown as fast as some of his contemporaries? His filming/video quality is great in my opinion. He has consistent good content. An example would be MrJWW(may not be the best example) started filming years after Sam, but has 300k more subscribers. Just curious on opinions. I feel like he should have risen at a faster rate.
Edit: After looking at both of their pages, it turns out that Mr JWW only started a year after. It still doesn't change my original sentiment. MrJWW has 300k more subscribers and 100 million more views.

    • @lickyagyalcuz
      @lickyagyalcuz 5 місяців тому

I think Sam makes more niche content, MrJWW was my entry in to this super car side of UA-cam. I’ve not watched MrJWW in years now, his content became very stale, whereas STG and BTG speaks more to my individual interest in cars rather than just “here’s a new car my investor bought”.

I’ve done many road trip with friends with numbers but my very first was with 17 other Cars of the same make in perfect weather up the whole west coast of Scotland. At one point you didn’t see another Car out with the group for a hour as we left early. This was before the NC500 was a thing. Everything just worked and the scenery was breathtaking, people outside the group enjoyed seeing the cars all line up at places. Always think I was spoiled because everyone was just great, great company and good food and best of all just a complete laugh start to finish over hundreds of miles. We all found our grove, some liked to push on more and others like myself to take it a bit more easy but the reality was you only arrived minutes behind the first car so it was all good. I’d pull in and say something was amazing be it a view or place and some would say “ where was that” because they were so focused on the Car in front that is all they seen on sections 😂 Sorry Scotlands to beautiful to let it pass you by.
The trouble is you’ll be chasing that first experience now and probably only come close. But that looked a great experience everyone enjoyed and will remember. Nothing like sitting round a table at night talking over the drive of the day.

On a serious note, Sam and Tony, the trip sounded epic when I heard about it on the podcast. Then I heard how it went on the podcast afterwards, I was like “that sounded sick, I want to go on the next one”. Well, having seen this, I take that back, if I could drive I’d already be planning the wheels so I can book the second yo7 pull the trigger. You really filmed this beautifully. I think it is definitely the people who make a trip like this. I did two uni ski trips that highlight it beautifully, first just like this, the second, well I wish I hadn’t bothered! But I get the sense you guys ar3 radiators rather than drains, and you’ll attract fellow radiators on the tours!

Thank you Sam and Tony for a great video. I was wondering how did you manage to get all cars down from the Uk to Portugal for the trip.
Any company you recommend for doing these across Europe car transfers.

Electric cars are made for luxury and daily driving, otherwise just not sole full. That is what my Porsche is for .

All tours are Porsche tours. No one brings other brands on tours because they break down. You can look at your Ferrari but you can't drive it

I am just thinking if I buy a spot in one of these trips. I drive a 100 hp Kia Ceed. I'd love to do a roadtrip like this, but I keep having the feeling the Kia would be sort of out of place there...

This is my dream to organize such a trip. Amazing! Portugal is obviously a great choice 👌 Ehat I believe is that you need an easy app to customize your routes and upload, share with your participants. No one would get lost 😬
