The first time I heard a piece by Scarlatti was in my ballet class. It was so enchanting that I lost my concentration and didn't pay attention to the instructions that the teacher had given the class. I've been in love with Scarlatti's music ever since. This is so beautifully rendered with wonderful sensitivity. Thank you for bringing this album to us.
When you think everything has turned into tawdry, cheap, garbage, you listen to this young man play Scarlatti with skill and passion and every thing you believe in falls into place again!
When Picasso said that “The purpose of Art is to wash the dust of daily life off of our souls" it was his way of describing what The First Artist tried to do eons ago, which was to express something that could not be put into words with a drawing on the wall of a cave. In my not-so-humble-opinion, Brilliant Classics is carrying on that tradition by making superb recordings of music composed and performed by extraordinary individuals available for the benefit and edification of the artistic sensibility that is present to some degree in most of us "ordinary" human beings. You good people might not see it in quite that way, but if so it is all the more reason why we grateful listeners should let you know how we feel. In fact I would go so far as to say that those of us who love The Good and who try, in our imperfect and limited way, to live our short lives accordingly have a duty to express our gratitude to people and organizations like BC which share that same goal. Bravo for all that you do.
This recording is a watershed in the history of Scarlattis' recordings. Michaelangelo Carbonnara's interpretations are articulate, joyful, sad and painstakingly exact, without being academic. I've really enjoyed this video and am going to look to purchase this splendid recording. Thank you Brilliant Classics for posting these glittering gems!
Scarlato cav. Domenico, quanti pianisti, grandi, piccoli, di passaggio, non hanno capito niente di Voi. Ma questo è davvero bravo ...E capisce i vostri divagari per tastiere. Me ne congratulo anch'io, me medesimo.
A Scarlatti idyl: the music now approaching 300 years, a young talent who has made the music his own, excellent recordings on an excellent piano, probably a Fazioli. Wonderful.
@Mazzel Tov Your comments are as offensive as they are banal. Go away and find some nasty right-wing tabloid which would happily publish your inane rants ...
K138 and the Spanish reminiscences it brings! wow. Complimenti vivi ed entusiasti, sei un Maestro Michelangelo Carbonara! I want to state that my fav all time of Scarlatti is K69. I suspect he wrote this in a very deep, deep moment of tristesse, sadness of the most pure type. I play the piano, and have to be in a special mood to play this Sonata, as it moves me profoundly.
Simply beautiful. The Scarlatti's were such prolific composers, that one is almost certain to hear novel Sonatas in every new collection I know the modern piano changes Scarlatti's harpsichord sound, but here it is lovely, and Mr Carbonara is an outstanding performer. Thank you for this treat.
Thank you for posting forty two keyboard pieces by one of my favorite de-composers. I have been playing music for fifty something years and Domenico Scarlatti's music is some of my favorite keyboard music.
My mother was my first piano teacher. When I discovered one of Scarlatti's Sonatas (K.113) in one of her music books, I tried to learn it although she tried to discourage me because Scarlatti was not one of her musical deities. My mother's musical deities were composers such as Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Debussy, Brahms, J.S. Bach, and Grieg.
Don’t known much about music ,or about Scarlatti ,but love it all.Thank you so much.Don’ t kwon anything about harpsichords or piano sound ,but love it anyway.Fine interpretation ,sounds modern.
These are excellent, beautifully played. I also like how many of them are not all the same 20 or 30 sonatas that usually get picked again and again. Some nice variety here.
The quality is very high. No need to have to pick and choose from a small group. Michelangelo has chosen a group filled with delight and variety, worthy to display Scarlatti's incomparable genius.
Quite a different approach than the traditional. Refreshing! The pre-classic and even romantic traits in Scarlatti become quite obvious. Fair to him. Thank you for this exquisite upload!
Scarlatti keeps amazing me. His compositions sound so fresh and modern for his time. Especially these piano renditions sometimes sound like Chopin avant la lettre (to my completely untrained ears, that is).
When I was a teenager, I remember reading a music analysis article which compared Domenico Scarlatti's keyboard sonatas to Chopin's keyboard music. When I was a music major in college, I mentioned this to the professor who taught the music theory courses at the school and he said that he thought the comparison of Scarlatti and Chopin was valid.
Thank you very, very much for sharing this. I'm always in search of the MORE VARIED Scarlatti sonatas, and with ALL other players I've come across you only get the ripping, zipping ones!
Thanks BC, excellent Scarlatti this. I could take a bit of issue with enthusiastic tempos here and there, but the playing is articulate and still very enjoyable. I will add this to my collection of Scarlatti.
Great performance, distinguished in phrasal conception, right and respectful taste but with brilliance of dynamics, and first of all, elegant touch. Bravo, to the interpreter, and many thanks to Brilliant!
Bravissimo, Brilliant Classics! Just bought a copy. Wonderful performances & so good to hear some lesser-played sonatas. K417 was a revelation for me: a fugal sonata that sounded like Scarlatti was trying to show Bach wasn't the only master of that form. Gonna go find the sheet music & start working on it right away.
Präzise und wunderschöne Interpretation dieser 42 fein komponierten Klaviersonaten von Domenico im veränderlichen Tempo mit klar artikuliertem Anschlag und perfekt kontrollierter Dynamik. Echt genialer Pianist!
scarlatti is wildly underrated... i should have been exposed to these works when i was a child, just like how i was with beethoven, mozart, vivaldi, and hell.... even greig!
I've been enjoying piano versions of Scarlatti's sonatas for some time, indeed the ring tone on my phone is a Scarlatti sonata! I am not a good enough musician or critic to say how good these performances are, except to me they sound fine and not exaggerated in any way. Also the recording is excellent though a bit "dry" - I wonder what make of piano he is playing. The choice of sonatas include a good number I've not previously heard before, so thank you for exploring the sonatas for us to hear.
these are very nicely & creatively played...i just wish the recording crew kept a piano tuner on site to take care of A 880 when it started to go out of tune
You can listen to an album containing the complete keyboard works of Buxtehude on YT if you don't mind hearing them payed on a harpsichord, the instrument for which they were written.
Wonderful recordings overall, and so nice to hear so many different sonatas chosen. However, I must question why he plays a G-sharp in the left hand in m.9 at 1:26:07 in the Sonata K.208. Is it perhaps printed that way in some other edition? The score I have says G-natural there which seems more logical, and in fact, he does it that way in the repeat at 1:27:09. So now I wonder if it was a mistake the first time, or maybe it was intentionally done to be different each time. In any case, I must say that I also do enjoy the extra ornamentation too.

L'assoluta modernità stilistica di Scarlatti impressiona tanto quanto l'intensità delle sue emozioni.
Bravissimo,Maestro Carbonara! An explosion of joy and beauty!!!
Questo giovane talento, erede della grande scuola pianistica italiana, esegue queste sonate di Scarlatti in maniera superba.
The music of Scarlatti touches your heart in the most profound manner.

This Romantic style of playing Baroque music, reminiscent of Wanda Landowska, is very refreshing and beautifully performed.
EXQUISITE. THANK YOU WITH DEEP GRATITUDE FOR YOUR FULL PRESENCE IN BRINGING SCARLATTI FULLY ALIVE, AGAIN.

Scarlatti is emotional great composer. Scarlatti is the Chopin of baroque era.
It is elegant and elaborate

Chopin is the Scarlatti of the Romantic Era.
I am sorry but Scarlatti was years before Chopin. One must not compare two maestros together!

Very fresh, handsome playing.
Belle synthèse entre un brillant musicien de notre culture italienne (française ) et son interprète pianiste international : synthèse sublime !
scarlatti is wildly underrated... i should have been exposed to these works when i was a child, just like how i was with beethoven, mozart, vivaldi, and hell.... even greig!
I really love his music. However, when you're born the same year as both Bach and Handel.....one tends to get overlooked!
It's apples and oranges, but he's far better than Grieg.
You know everything is going to be alright when you listen to the genius of Domenico Scarlatti.
Wow he gets the harpsichord effect on a percussive instrument . What a performance !
Yes, his trills etc.are great

Wonderful recordings overall, and so nice to hear so many different sonatas chosen. However, I must question why he plays a G-sharp in the left hand in m.9 at 1:26:07 in the Sonata K.208. Is it perhaps printed that way in some other edition? The score I have says G-natural there which seems more logical, and in fact, he does it that way in the repeat at 1:27:09. So now I wonder if it was a mistake the first time, or maybe it was intentionally done to be different each time. In any case, I must say that I also do enjoy the extra ornamentation too.
