Gas prices were about a buck in 1994. A milkshake would have been about $1-$2, so a 5 dollar shake was kinda crazy then. I saw this movie twice opening night in LA and again that weekend in Vegas. Was a special event, and this movie was different than anything seen before. Oh, and the dance scene at Jack Rabbit Slim's was met with roars from the crowd. To see Travolta dance on the big screen after disappearing from Hollywood for many years was a treat.
Back in the early 90s no one was supposed to say the N word but it wasn't the huge societal crime that it is today. People who ran in certain circles did whatever they wanted to do. So Jimmy being married to Bonnie and friends with Jules meant those in his circle wouldn't have taken offense. J.Lo had a similar problem years later with a song she did with Ja Rule. That was around the time people started wanting the word outlawed. Either way the characters in this movie are outlaws so they're supposed to do bad things.
That and ive also heard that in the films backstory Jimmy and Jules go waaayyy back, are close friends, and Jimmy may have even helped Jules out of a bad spot at one point. At any rate like u said, Jules didnt take it as disrespect bc they all run in the same circles, and theyre gangsters, not Starbucks baristas.
@@DaveyNaples He grew up on blaxploitation films. If you want to think negative things about it, fine. But the average person, real people, weren't clutching their pearls about his dialogue at the time. Fancy white guilt types were. But normal people got it.
@antoinettelopes it doesn't matter what you grew up with and when you say 'normal people' I assume you mean people with your point of view. But it's untrue to say there was no objection to it at the time, there was a huge row between him and Spike Lee for instance. Also, to say that people were ok with it at the time, simply shows how purvesive and open racial dialogue was, which is a reflection of what society was like.
@@DaveyNaples Spike Lee was pissed that SLJ was bros with QT. He was responsible for so much divisiveness. I remember Spike saying that white and black people should be SEPARATE but equal. I can't tell you how hilarious it was to watch him on one of those ancestry shows sitting in his white relative's living room. He grew out of a lot of his anti-white sentiments but he was the racebaiter back in the day.
Edmond Hoyle was an authority on card games, and codified the official rules of many different games. “According to Hoyle” means “adhering to the officially recognized standard.”
No one ever catches that the drug dealer basically gave Vincent an open invitation to his house with the "mi casa es su casa" line. Kind of like extending an invitation to a vampire to enter your house. 😂
Fun Facts: “Jimmy” , the guy whose house they used to clean up the mess is Quentin Tarantino, the Director of the movie. Also, Zed’s motorcycle, “Grace” actually belongs to Bruce Willis in real life..
You pointed out some really cool things I never thought of: he should have gone with Mia when he had the chance after all because he still wound up dead, either way! And the close up when Vincent shakes Mia's hand; you pointed out that she said that's all Tony Rocky Horror ever did to her, was shake her hand....and he still wound up thrown off a balcony! Very cool. Thanks!
The way I look at it both Jules and Vincent had a chance to accept God into their lives after the shooting Jules accepted God and lived Vincent denied the miracle and died.. Now I don't think Tarantino was making any kind of religious statement I just think he thought it was a great plot idea.
Quentin Tarantino is a genius dark comedy writer. The watch scene with Christopher Walken is so damn funny and it keeps building worse and worse. He said his father died of dysentery after five years of holding the watch up his ass. Dysentery is a highly contagious gastrointestinal infection where the primary symptom is perpetual bloody diarrhea. Here you go kid.
This is one of my favorite films. the dialog is amazing and the irony is crazy. Obviously, if Jewels hadn't had his religious experience, he would have been in Butch's apartment that day and Vincent would have lived and Butch would have died and Marcellous never gets raped.... Its a wild string of events. And I love the ending. QT films have the best dialog in my opinion.
I always wondered how Vincent was able to go to the bathroom so much... He was a heroin addict - constipation is a reality that hitman had to deal with
Plus the bathroom is his test. He constantly gets in trouble after going to the bathroom: Mia overdoses, robbery and then his killing. If he had sensed the "miracle" like Jewels he never would have died.
Vincent was in the rest room often, because heroin makes addicts constipated... (Mia snorted heroin, which made her OD)... the book he had was "Pulp Fiction" - Bonnie's husband with the great coffee, was played by the writer/director, Quinton Tarrantino.
I love the misdirection with Mia and Vincent. You know that Marcellus is a jealous man with violence tendencies, so the closer they get the more you suspect that he’s going to have sex with her and seal his fate. And then she finds his heroin…
The bible verse is made up. Marvin worked for Marcellus and was a plant in their group which is why Vince and Jules didn't kill him in the apartment, which also makes his accidental death more of a shame. Mia and Vince did not win the trophy, they stole it. That part was edited out for length. The gun in Butch's kitchen was Marcellus' who left it there to get coffee and donuts. Butch seeing Marcellus walk in front of his car is an homage to the same scene in Psycho. Jules calls the robber Ringo, because before editing he uses all 4 of the Beatles' names with different characters in the movie. And I'm sure everyone else will tell you why Vince is in the bathroom all the time.
Sooo many great actors! No real heroes, all anti-heroes. It was a totally different vibe rooting for the various bad guys as protagonists...then having them cross each other. The dark humour is of course the best part. This was Quentin Tarrentino's second film. Really solidified his position in the film industry and revitalized John Travolta's career. Check out "Death Proof", another Tarrentino film with several awesome ladies as protagonists, and includes several location shots in and around Austin Texas that used to be part of my stomping grounds way back in the day.❤
The most astonishing story in the movie is the watch's story.. INCLUDING WHAT BUTCH HAD TO GO THROUGH TO GETCIT BACK, TOO. (I wouldn't want that watch.. It's a curse!)
13:00 yeah, $5 had a lot more buying power in 1993, you probably could've bought a burger, fries, and a drink at most places with that kind of money. That milkshake would be over $10 today.
Jules did leave the life. That's why when Butch goes back to his apartment it's Vincent there without Jules. Vincent was actually staking out Butch's place with Marsellus who had left to pick up coffee and donuts. This is why Marsellus was just down the street when Butch saw him and ran him over. You could even say Jules leaving the Hitman game saved his life because he wasn't at the apartment to get killed by Butch ,Vincent was.
Damn, watched this movie a million times, never thought of that. I thought Marcellus just happened to be in the neighborhood. Never thought that he was getting food to go back with Vincent to stakeout Butches crib. Thanks
Jules wouldnt have been as stupid as Vincent. Jules maybe even would have ordered Vincent to not place his weapon anywhere in the appartment alsone. It would have probably Butch who would have been killed in this scenario. Your observation about why Marsellus was around is great, would have never spotted this myself.
12:14 I always wonder if Tarantino hid an Easter egg there that wasn't even laid yet: "she was the deadliest woman in the world - with a knife." Sounds like a blueprint for "the bride" in Kill Bill, albeit with a very long knife...er, katana.
100%. Tarantino has many Easter Eggs. The cigarettes Red Apple are a discontinued brand that is also in Reservoir Dogs. Many actors are the same in many of his films. Vincent was actually supposed to be played by the ruthless killer in Reservoir Dogs, etc. Sam Jackson is in many films as well.
Not necessarily. Marcellus was there waiting with Vincent, but he had gone for a walk to grab coffee and donuts for the two of them. if Jules were there he may have been the one walking to get breakfast.
You have to really listen to the story Christopher Walken tells young Butch which is why Butch returns and helps Marcellus. Something about a situation two men find themselves in. Also when the guy from the bathroom unloads his gun at Jules and Vincent. The bullet holes in the wall makes a fish if you connect the dots. Six holes, the fish body is in the shape of a diamond the other two holes form a triangular tail connected to the diamond shaped fish body.
In the 90’s heroin was a big thing in counter culture movies. Check out Killing Zoe. It’s written and directed by Roger Avery who co wrote Pulp Fiction.
She overdosed because she was snorting coke all night, but the bag she found in Vincent's pocket was heroin.

It was NOT an accident. Either passive-aggressive Vincent decided he didn't like Marvin. OR, Wallace told Vince, no witnesses.
Vincent didn't mean to shoot Marvin. Marvin was the one who warned Marcellus Wallace that his friends were planning to betray him.
Yet god wanted him dead. He betrayed his own friends for the profit of Marcellus' favor, most likely.

Why did I know they BOTH were going to laugh at the tomato ketchup joke 😂 I knew it! I was waiting for it!
12:25, this conversation was the inspiration for another Quentin Tarantino movie Kill Bill.
“I mean I’d take the watch, but I wouldn’t wear it. Id put it in a safe space” 😂
Nah, Tarentino just has an unhealthy obsession with that word.. it's something odd that runs through almost all of his films
Don't come here!
I don't know you!
PRANK CALLER! PRANK CALL!
You two were fun, good job
A $5 shake in 1994 would be like $15-$20 dollars today.
Fun Facts: “Jimmy” , the guy whose house they used to clean up the mess is Quentin Tarantino, the Director of the movie.
Also, Zed’s motorcycle, “Grace” actually belongs to Bruce Willis in real life..
Hospital workers do the exact same thing. We can clean up the nastiest, bloodiest mess and then sit right back down and finish our lunch.
This movie was Samuel L. Jackson’s magnum opus. Here’s a fun fact: Laurence Fishburne was considered for the role of Jules Winnfield. 5:03
I think someone discovered John Travolta and got a crush lol she was so sad that he died. Adorable ☺️.
That was so fun! Welcome to the criminal subculture Jyn&Ryl. No one knows what's in Marcellus briefcase, just that it glows...
It's a McGuffin, a plot device used to further the plot along. What's in it is not important so much as everyone wants it.
Just like the ending, Jyn robbed my heart.
Vincent was in the rest room often, because heroin makes addicts constipated... (Mia snorted heroin, which made her OD)... the book he had was "Pulp Fiction" - Bonnie's husband with the great coffee, was played by the writer/director, Quinton Tarrantino.

GIRL 1 - 😲Yo! It's over for Vincent....... Or else he has like a ...
GIRL 2 - 😑No he doesn't
ME - 😃best reaction
You guys should try -True Romance!!!
In 1994, a milkshake at McDonald's was $1.50. At a good Diner in Los Angeles, a shake was usually about $2
great choice.. great reaction.. both of you keep pushing through and making outstanding content.. subscribed
I love the misdirection with Mia and Vincent. You know that Marcellus is a jealous man with violence tendencies, so the closer they get the more you suspect that he’s going to have sex with her and seal his fate.
And then she finds his heroin…
The gun on the counter at Butch’s apartment wasn’t Vincent’s, it was Marsellus’. He left it there when he went to go get donuts.
Ya but Butch would not have been able to live with himself leaving behind a storied watch like that.
The 5 dollar milkshake would cost about $10.50 in 2023.
13:00 yeah, $5 had a lot more buying power in 1993, you probably could've bought a burger, fries, and a drink at most places with that kind of money. That milkshake would be over $10 today.
You two are fun to watch!
This movie is about redemption...all the main characters get a second chance to make a change in their life.
Dang, y'all gotta see Jackie Brown now. You'll love it even more.
Don't be a square is a term from the 60s/70s in America that pretty much amounts to saying don't be a dork.
He didn’t kill Marvin on purpose in the car. The car went over a speed bump I think and the gun went off
I love how you both are paying attention to the dialogue. Ya’ll watched this movie the way its supposed to be watched! Sub ❤
The running joke in the movie is that every time something bad happens, Vincent is in the bathroom.
If Jules didn't quit he would have been at the apartment when Butch got there and Vincent would be alive.
Not necessarily. Marcellus was there waiting with Vincent, but he had gone for a walk to grab coffee and donuts for the two of them. if Jules were there he may have been the one walking to get breakfast.
@@HalCogan never thought about why he was in the area. Good catch
in 1994 money, $5 woulda been enough to get an entire meal at McDonalds, and she dropped that on one milkshake
I always think it's funny that Vincent gets sympathy when he gets shot... considering he's a murderous junkie 😂😂.
21:26 'Yesssss'
Should do ALL Tarentino movies! He’s the goat!
Six holes, the fish body is in the shape of a diamond the other two holes form a triangular tail connected to the diamond shaped fish body.
also the bullet holes are obviously behind the two hitmen, so it was definitely not logical misfiring only.
Good stuff! So I always figured that Vincent died because Jules quit the life and wasn’t there as backup.
"Don't be a Square" basically means don't be lame, or don't be a buzzkill.
In the 90’s heroin was a big thing in counter culture movies. Check out Killing Zoe. It’s written and directed by Roger Avery who co wrote Pulp Fiction.
This movie was from 20 years ago. 5 dollars for a shake was definitely expensive
