    Those final lines spoken by Red get me every time, "I hope I can make it across the border.
    I hope to see my friend and shake his hand.
    I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams.
    I hope."
    The book ends with this and we as the reader have to HOPE that Red does find Andy. This film is a masterpiece.

      I have a copy of the script where Darabont put notes in the back. He said audience reaction to the original ending was nice but not great. The producer said they could get some money to shoot the beach scene just in case it made a difference. They screened it to test audiences with the new ending and the audience reaction was through the roof. So they kept it.

    • @greenacres1909
      @greenacres1909 Рік тому +5

      @@Theomite Yeah, the open ending is best for the book and reader and it’s very artistic but the film is SO moving that the audience needs that confirmation they were reunited. Just incredible.

    • @Pixelologist
      @Pixelologist Рік тому +7

      @@greenacres1909 At least they kept it sans dialogue.....or even so much as a close-up of their embrace. Silent but for the sound of the surf and then that camera pull-back. Cinematically, near perfect.

      @@Pixelologist Agreed!

    • @Theomite
      @Theomite Рік тому +1

      @@greenacres1909 The book is also a little darker. There's enough hints that Andy MAY have killed his wife, and Tommy takes a deal to keep his mouth shut. So the book's ending might work well for that tone of story...but not for this film.

    Raquel Welch the actress on the final poster was a big fan of this movie, also James Whitmore came out of retirement to play Brooks. Allen Greene was a literary agent who worked as the director's representative to secure the rights for the movie, he died from complications of AIDS before filming started so F. Darabont dedicated the movie to him. Loved your reaction!

    18:16 In _so_ many ways, they did Brooks wrong. I mean, he was locked up in 1905. He was _23._ He was _young,_ _strong,_ _healthy_ and _educated._
    Before being locked up, he saw _one single_ car that must've seemed like the most _novel_ thing in the world. While he was locked up, the first _radio_ transmission, _TV_ transmission, both world wars and the Great _Depression_ took place. Before he was locked up, only the wealthiest, most _well-connected_ people in _big cities_ had telephones.
    After he was released, _everyone_ had radios, TVs, cars and phones, and he was in his 70s, which meant that it was _way_ too late to have _any_ expectation that he adapt to this world. The world he was released back into was _completely different_ from the one he was taken from, but they expected him to reintegrate through _bagging groceries._
    You know who spends their days bagging groceries? People in their _teens,_ _twenties,_ maybe, once in a while, people in their early _thirties._ Not people in their _seventies._ That's why, nowadays, social security benefits become available in your _mid-sixties._ That's _retirement_ age.

    Stephen King is the G.O.A.T...he has amazing stories like Shawshank and The Green Mile and The Body (Stand By Me is the film's title)...and then he has amazing horror stories like IT, Misery, Pet Sematary, The Shining, The Dead Zone, Cujo, Salem's Lot, Carrie, Christine, and on and on..and then of course his insanely awesome series of The Dark Tower..like 8 novels. Then the characters he has created. A whole giant list of great characters..both villains and protagonists. Stephen King is so cool he made a car the main villain..Christine. He also made me scared to death of clowns (IT).

    Great reaction and the editing was top tier! A point to be made about the movie; Andy is the main character, but it is Red's Redemption. Andy didn't commit a crime so there was nothing to redeem. Red did commit a horrible crime by sabotaging the brakes on his wife car to collect a large life insurance policy she had come into. Ended up killing the neighbor and the neighbor's child due to brakes failing. Red found this redemption after Andy escaped prison, Red finally accepted responsibility for his actions, voiced his sincere regret/remorse for the horrible crime he committed, said let's cut the bullshit to the parole board, and gained his freedom / redemption.

    • @IdliAmin_TheLastKingofSambar
      @IdliAmin_TheLastKingofSambar 11 днів тому

      Yup. While Andy is the film’s central character, Red is really the protagonist, just like in _To Kill A Mockingbird_ (the novel and the film, but not Aaron Sorkin’s stage adaptation), in which Atticus is the central character, but Scout is the protagonist. Over the course of both stories, Andy and Atticus change those around them, but Andy himself doesn’t change very much, and Atticus really doesn’t change at all. That’s why the original ending was Red on the bus saying, “I hope,” because it’s really _his_ journey-catalyzed and inspired by Andy-that we’re following.

    A fatal flaw of this movie is that Andy is a smart guy and he would have known that he didn't need the warden to help him with the news of the man who really killed his wife. A warden is never your advocate and Andy would have known that. He would have gotten a lawyer to work on his behalf on the outside. He especially wouldn't have gone to the warden because of the illegal activities.

    The warden wanted to keep Andy no matter what because he actually knew full well that Andy was a decent guy who might eventually talk of what happened at the prison. The thing however that put Andy into prison, being "hard to read", also got him out. The warden expected a lot but not such determination and patience. The movie makes a great point on how we sabotage or advance our own lives by what we say and omit to say. Just like with Red, who was let out in the end not because they thought him rehabilitated but because he finally admitted that he had lost hope for himself, which he probably had decades before already. To them is was a sign that they had broken him or at least his old self. Still my favourite movie. Wonderful reaction!

    One of the best - if not the best. Twelve angry men (a B&W 50's movie) is still on top - or a best 2nd. Love to see you young ladies react. Not noisy and smart.

    This is a great movie. Another one on the same level is Mystic River, and also stars Tim Robbins again, and it's directed by Clint Eastwood. Definitely worth a watch

    Rita Hayworth was an actress who was famous at the time, Andy wanted a poster of her. Fun fact, the original story the film is based on, is called Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption
