Hey, how is learning Spanish going for you? :) I’m planning to do something similar and travel to Colombia + Central America this winter. I don’t think I can manage 5 hours per day😂 but I’m doing something every day and would wish to reach a simple conversational level while I’m there at least. Are there specific types of language school/course that you can recommend?
True. I just think if you're ignorant yourself, it gives you less right to be offended if people are ignorant about you lol. Most Latinos outside of Mexico don't like it when people think they're Mexican, yet they assume every Asian is a Chino, to the point that in Latin America 'chino' is used interchangeably to mean 'Asian', when it should really only refer to people from 1 of 48 Asian countries: China. Well then, if you gonna use that word with all Asians, don't get offended if we call you Mexican 😆

Sometimes it is urgent to find a common way of communication and in that case, knowing English is useful and preferable. I am not English native speaker. In my country, people mostly get angry when others say that Turkey is an Eastern, Middle Eastern country or confuse us as an Arabic country.

In Germany, as well as Northern European countries and the Netherlands, you can get by very well with English. As soon as Germans notice that someone struggles with the language they automatically switch to English. Learning German for a short trip no vale la pena 😅
Yes, but it’s better and more polite to be patient and allow the person who has gone to the trouble of learning the language to continue and give them the chance to practice and improve their target language. Germans tend to okay in that regard. The Dutch are very impatient. The Spanish are generally patient and helpful (except of course in any country where someone is under pressure to get their work done).
You should still learn some words. I did GCSE German (UK) and got a D so not good but out of respect will try my best with what I have. We can switch to English but at least u show an effort if its just Guten Morgan, wie gehts sprechen sie deutsch
@@boink800Quite true, though I'll add it does get a bit exaggerated I feel. If you're not in a decent sized city, you will run into people with weak english, and quite a few who don't really speak any. Around a third of Germans don't speak English, though they tend to be older, more rural, and in the former East Germany, so tourists run into them less. They're not Norway or the Netherlands.
I spoke in a friend's English class (a bunch of 10 and 11 year olds) in Medellín about the city I come from, Portland Oregon. The river here is the ColUmbia which I pointed out is spelled with a "u". I told them if they spelled it with an "o" most people here wouldn't even notice.
I had a co-worker ask the waitress to speak in English when I was on a work trip in France. Omg, it was so embarrassing and the look that she gave him was priceless. It is personally one of my pet peeves being an American, the arrogance that some people have expecting everyone in the world to cater to them. Especially as a lover of languages, it really grinds my gears.
I'm unsure if it was intentional, but it's funny that you mention how people in one country don't all speak the same way in point two. Yet, you labeled Michelle's accent as "Mexican" rather than specifying her regional dialect, as you did with Agustina lmao.

Why Columbia is the spelling of places in the USA: Columbus is the Latin version of the explorer's name. In the time when these cities and the Ivy League university were named, Latin was the lingua franca (like English is today). Colombus is a spelling of the explorer's name in Italian which was never the lingua franca of any time period. It is actually kind of odd that Colombia which was named by the Spanish when the Spanish version of his explorer's name is Colon.
