Purple dye was very expensive in antiquity because it was produced from a sea snail, and it took a _lot_ of these snails to make a small amount of dye. The technique of harvesting these snails and making dye was discovered and developed by the Phoenicians -- a people who descended from Canaanites and originally lived in what is now Lebanon. Later, a Phoenician city much farther west, in what is now Tunisia, was founded, and over time became a dominant power in the Mediterranean. This was the empire of Carthage. The great wealth of Carthage was in significant part a result of their control over the manufacture and distribution of this "Tyrian Purple" dye. (Tyre was a major Phoenician city back east in the original homeland of the Phoenicians). Carthage was ultimately completely obliterated by Rome, after three wars between Rome and Carthage. Roman legions burned the city to the ground, slaughtered much of the population,and sold the rest into slavery, scattered across the Roman Empire. Afterwards they manually disassembled almost all remaining buildings, brick by brick. So thorough was the genocide and decimation of Carthage that today almost no prose from Carthage remains, and the vast majority of what we know about the great empire comes from Greek and Roman writings.
