  • Perhaps one of the greatest live guitar solos ever recorded.
    Monmouth College Fight Song. I took a poor VHS version and added the audio from the CD. It needed a little timestretching to match the sound to the pics.

    I love this song and performance and was very honored to have arranged the horn section we overdubbed at Capitol well have the live performance of this at Montreux in 1981. Tommy Lipuma brought me in for several artists on that project, The Jackets, Al Jarreau, Randy Crawford, Larry Carlton and David Sanborn I remember arranging horns for.
    Robben is killing it here as is the whole band. Thoughts and prayers for drummer and great guy Ricky Lawson who is fighting for his life.

      Loved this track since I first heard it back in the early '80's. All superb musicians , but Robben Ford - such a talent at such a young age. (Whilst I'm here though, I have to take the opportunity to say to Larry that his synth solos on Al Jarreau's tracks "Spain" and "Easy" are two of the finest synth solos I ever heard. Truly inspiring ! )

    Robben told me that the record company had him recut the melody and they wanted him to redo the solo as well but Robben refused. So listen when the solo starts as the guitar shifts from the left of the stereo field to the center and notice that the tone changes as well.

    SUPERB JOB fushpie!! Up until today I had only ever known this tune (for more than 3 decades) from the excellent Casino Lights live album and was a YJ's devotee from album #1. Never knew there was a video of this actual performance. I agree, Ford's guitar playing is totally mesmerising. This audience just had no idea they were witnessing the genesis of a lasting bunch of superior musicians.

    I keep looking for the brass/horn/reed section and don't see one. Maybe it is the keyboard player doing those parts? If so, he is one fantastic player. I did a few shows in Vegas and the keyboard had one boards and a Midi box . He had some great horn/sax patches, but what impressed me was his blend of harmonies and after touch skills just like the musician in this video. These musicians are the best. Hats off to Robben Ford and his creative playing.

    Ah yes, the awesome '80s! -- back when Russ had hair. I was fortunate to see this original lineup regroup at the Greek Theater for one time only in '02. Unfortunately, Robben kept screwing up the first notes of the melody (the 9 triplets) of this tune 0:39, 0:45, etc. He looked embarrassed. Even though he didn't create a trainwreck, I felt for the dude. He's a killer player, so it was odd he would mess it up. Probably hadn't played it since the '80s.

    • @tomgiles1484
      @tomgiles1484 6 років тому

      nezkeys79 When the stabs come in, instead of continuing in 4/4, count in 2/4, so each stab is just a quarter note on each beat. The tricky part is getting back into 4/4. There are 10 stabs, so on the 10th, you should be counting in 4/4 again.

    • @michaelrytting
      @michaelrytting 3 роки тому

      Try this. Shuffles are based on a 12/8 groove. The "stabs" are based on a 4 note grouping, 3 notes and a rest, based on the 8th note triplet groove. . If you think of the last note of the last group of 3 notes in this section as the new downbeat or the new "1" of the new measure, you've got it! In a transcription is ends up being a bar of 11/8. Even Chuck Sher, who usually does excellent transcription in his books got it wrong. There is an accurate chart in a video by a rhythm section of french musicians who invited 6 of their guitar friends to take turns taking solos. It's fantastic! Here's the rhythm section and chart ua-cam.com/video/IVfJPm8PZck/v-deo.html, by Jérôme BUIGUES. It's worth learning...just a blast!
