Exactly, there isn't supposed to be a happy ending, we all have to lose people we love if we live long enough, we come to accept it but there is no happy ending to it. Happiness is something we should embrace when it happens, it isn't the natural state.

This song really breaks me apart...but after all of the times I listened to this song, this is the first time I understand the break. "It seems to me that there are more broken hearts in the world that can't be mended...LEFT UNATTENDED. What do we do? What do we do?" The answer is love. Make sure we are there for one another. Someone may be suffering in silence. Be about sharing love. Be about caring. Remember the widowed and the orphaned. Remember the lonely.

This was Irish-born singer Gilbert O'Sullivan's only American #1. It sold 2 million copies, spent six weeks at the summit in America and earned him three Grammy Award nominations (Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year). It was the second best-selling single of the year in America behind Don McLean's "American Pie."
Gilbert O'Sullivan has denied that this song is autobiographical or about the death of his father when he was 11. O'Sullivan said: "Everyone wants to know if it's an autobiographical song, based on my father's early death. Well, the fact of the matter is, I didn't know my father very well, and he wasn't a good father anyway. He didn't treat my mother very well."
In a Songfacts interview with O'Sullivan, he explained how this song came together. "'Alone Again' was written with two other songs in a writing period when I was 22 years of age. I had been a postal clerk in London, so I was only able to write after work in the evening. When Gordon Mills managed me - he managed Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdinck - when he took me on, he allowed me to quit my job and move into a bungalow that he owned where I could write every day. So, therefore, I was in a writing mode, and 'Alone Again' was just one of the songs I'd written. I was really pleased with it, happy with it, but I didn't see it as being any more special than other songs. Suffice it to say, I was happy."

This song used to make me sad when I was younger, but as I've gotten older it makes some sense, that of course as time passes those you love pass away or sometimes are no longer in your life for a variety of reasons. Also, considering Gilbert O'Sullivan is Irish, this song seems to fit with an Irish outlook on life and death with some pessimism and a fatalistic viewpoint. This song has always popped in my head when I've gone through times of loneliness.

You may not believe it, but this song is one of the most important songs in modern hiphop history. Gilbert O'Sullivan refused to clear a sample of this song for Biz Markie's "Alone Again", and the case wasn't settled, but instead decided by a judge. The decision completely changed sampling use and practices and kind of marked the end of one era of rap and the beginning of another.

    • @disconnexionsdotcom
      @disconnexionsdotcom Рік тому +2

I was about to post the same thing. Yeah, within months, a lot of rap groups had to change the way they made music. No more Public Enemy or De La Soul using over 10 samples in one song. It led to some creative sampling and beat chopping, but it also made West Coast artists cheaper because of their interpolation and replaying of songs rather than sampling multiple songs. That really changed the game too.

Raymond (for that is his real name) is a genius songwriter and performer. We finally had the chance to see him in Southport the year before the pandemic hit and it was a sublime evening of incredible, heartfelt music. I had not realised until that night, when he revealed, that he'd originally been in a band with Rick Davies who later formed Supertramp. Wow. 'Gilbert' was hugely popular in the early/mid 70s in the UK and had string of hits with incredible songs, IN addition to 'Alone Again' - I recommend the equally melancholy 'Nothing Rhymed', the deeply touching 'Clair' and the hugely popular, up-beat 'Get Down'. P.S. His early career saw him attired as more of a 'street urchin' than a schoolboy.

I don't know if I'm prejudiced but it seems like this kind of incongruity between lyrics and music happened more "back then." When you think about "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" by the Beatles, the melody and the arrangement are so happy and skippy, and the words are about a serial killer.

No matter how many times I hear this song - it gets me every time. The part where he says his mother couldn't understand why the only man she ever loved had been taken....is a chunk of reality that we all feel. We can never understand things like that and being resigned to being alone again (naturally) would apply to all of us in one form or another. Feeling hopeless can hit any one of us......as this masterpiece of song writing shows.

He started as a session musician. He also played the sitar. He actually gave lessons to several people who ended up being professional guitarists. In later years he became a member of Tom Jones' band. While working in Vegas with Tom, Jim met and became friends with Elvis as well.

This is one of the saddest songs ever IMO, the act of committing suicide (throwing himself off the tower , , , broken into little pieces), I think our reaction presenters didn't cotton on to this. The last verse resonates so much with me. When my father passed away my Mum pined everyday for him, the lyrics catch this perfectly.

Gilbert was an excellent songwriter and some of his early hits when he dressed like a school kid were "Nothing Rhymed" and "We Will" - both highly recommended. Gilbert's music career was put on hold by a long legal case over his record contract with MAM records which gave the bulk of his earnings back to the record company - he eventually won but it took 5 years during which he was unable to release songs or sign up to another label and he never signed another major deal again, such a shame.

Thanks for featuring this song. I remember when it came out. For me, it's one of the most subversive songs of the 1970s. It has all the trappings and sounds of an easy listening song of the era, but that only make the lyrics even more powerful and achingly sad.

It might surprise you to know this was Gilbert’s one and only downer, and yet his biggest hit. He had several hits back in the ‘70s, but all the rest were much more upbeat. It might also surprise you that Gilbert actually wrote this song when he was only 15. Pretty deep lyrics for someone so young. You should also check out “Claire”. A much more upbeat and playful song. I have to say though, “Alone Again (Naturally)” still hits hard even today. Much love to you both, you’re awesome!!!!

I’ve seen him so many times over the years and he always comes out too his fans so we can have our photo taken with him and he will have a chat with you he’s a brilliant song writer. I’ve just seen him again in concert a few weeks ago. The concert was amazing. Had my photo taken with him again. He really doesn’t have a really strong Irish accent. Please check out Matrimony with the video we’re he’s wearing his school uniform. He looks so cute . That’s when I fell in love with him. He’s got so many brilliant songs and he always writes his own material he’s a genius.great reaction love from Denise in Yorkshire England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿👏👏👏😘😘

This was mother's favorite song back in the 70s she used to play it all the time. I think she could really relate to this song as my father started a new business and I had moved out to start my own life and she spent a lot of time alone. She passed away at 41, I was 22 then I'm 65 now and I still shed a tear every time I hear this song. I'm glad you reacted to it. Another song she absolutely loved was Terry Jacks "Seasons In The Sun". Thanks again.

The music back then expressed all the different emotions, not just the feel good ones. So many serious things were happening like the Viet Nam War and Cuban Missile Crisis. The music kept things real, giving us a chance to reflect on all the different aspects of life.

Personal catchy song for me. When my mom passed away back in 2010 after my dad passed away in 2000 I cried a lot when I was alone with other siblings due to the fact I didn't bore any children for me to pass on and this song came into my mind to reflect our human life on our planet. I hope all is well for our species. This would be a good song to listen to one day after your mothers funeral if she is the last one to die after your father has died days/years earlier.

This song was popular in 1972 while I was in the army during the Vietnam War and I got a Dear John letter. Later my father passed away leaving me to care for my mother and when she passed away I Cried And Cried All Day. It's as if Gilbert wrote this about me. A very emotional song for me to hear.

We have all had our ups and downs, but it has been my experience that GOD IS FAITHFUL, and he will never leave us or forsake us. I take great comfort in the knowledge that God truly cares about us, and we are not alone!
