Her tears were genuine. She had recently reconnected with her mother, with whom she’d had a difficult relationship, but just before recording this her mother had died. She had said that when she sung the lyric “all the flowers that you planted, mamma, died when you went away” she was thinking of her mother, and the tears came naturally.
Sinead always wore her heart on her sleeve - she was raw, honest and passionate, and I for one always loved her for that in addition to her wonderful voice.
Sinead took this song to another level, way better than the original
The duet with Prince and Rosie Gaines is much better.
Not the original version. Prince nothing compares 2 U cinematic mix is the original one. Just didn’t get released until later (it was in the vault. Recorded earlier.)
False
How about not compare at all. Just enjoy two versions( three actually counting Chris Cornell) by three artists whom are not with us anymore
@@UTFR67Prince didn't like it when people covered his songs. He really didn't like Sinead doing this song
I think anyone who is a fan of this song knows it was wrote by Prince.
Yes, Prince wrote it, but for me, Sinead owned it. So sad that neither are still with us. 💔💔
"...written..."
Yeah, we know!
I just found out a year ago and I love this song, never knew.
The Prince spelling probably should have been a bit of a giveaway.
She was speaking up against sexual child abuse within the Catholic church and got cancelled for it. Also, the reference "mama" is because her mom had recently passed away when recording the song. She was also abused by her own mother. Sinead was a tormented but beautiful beautiful soul.
I feel for her but I when the Snl episode where she Tore a picture of Pope John Paul II in half at the end of her set aired I had no idea that was what she was trying to do. That's all she did no explanation. So how were people supposed to know. I'm sure a lot of people just thought she was disrespecting the Catholic Church. Now that I know I feel for her and what she had to go thru. Rest in peace Sinead.
@@andyh4224Also Magadalene laundries is a dark stain in Ireland, perpetuated by Catholic nuns i believe
@@andyh4224many many many people knew at the time of the tearing pope pic that the Church officially covered up the various sexual abuse situations committed by priests
But........yes......I guess many did not know also
It was a situation that went for decades before that moment and known for at least a decade
No she was not whatsoever it was about her abuse of her mother to her
@@Irish780 So why would she rip up a photo of the Pope then on SNL?
She said the church had destroyed "entire races of people", and that Catholic priests had been abusing children for years. Her protest took place nine years before John Paul II publicly acknowledged child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. The protest triggered hundreds of complaints from viewers.
Her tears are real as her mom passed away shortly before this was recorded. She mentions “all the flowers that you planted momma, in the backyard, all died when you went away”. Those tears are for her mom.
I believe Prince said it was the best version he had heard. She had a troubled life. Her mother I believe left her, she came out about catholic priests and her career was affected. She lost her son and then she died at the age of 56 in 2023.
She unfairly became a social pariah…it made me so mad that, that one moment turned everything upside down, and then she spiraled for so long…I was so happy she was doing well after her long battle with depression, and then suddenly her son dies😞and she’s thrown back into a state of depression and mourning for her son…I believe his death was a turning point, and she couldn’t come back from it…she died of a broken heart, and that reason kills me because I thought Sinead was an amazing woman with a heart so big…ugh…brings me tears just writing about her.😞💔
This song was #1 in almost every country in 1990. #3 for the year of 1990 in the USA. A worldwide smash hit.
This is not a performance. This is authentic.
She shaved her head after she was doing an interview and all the questions were about her long beautiful hair.. She was a beast. A beautiful tortured soul. Written by Prince
She made reference to her mother (these words are the only ones in the song not written by Prince),about planting flowers in the backyard was reflective of her relationship with her mother that died as a result of her mother being extremely abusive towards her when she was very young.
Sinead passed away in July last year....tragic! An iconic rendition of a Prince song. Her delivery of the lyrics and direct to camera performance captures the emotion of the song. But, music can say more than words sometimes can! Your analysis and interpretation is well founded. Great job guys.
There is a video out there of her live performance of this song - if you enjoyed this version, you almost have to see the live version and experience the emotion she puts into the show.
This is one of the greatest songs EVER recorded! It's one of those songs that I knew would hit #1. It would've been a shocker if it didn't. The radio stations always played it in its entirety, even though it's more than 5 minutes long. It's one of those songs where you KNOW you shouldn't cut. I was about to graduate from high school when it went to #1 in the spring of 1990.
She did a live version for an Amnesty International concert in Chile that is just devastating. The video is on UA-cam. To see how massively connected emotionally she was too the song is amazing.
Prince wrote it, but he liked Sinead's version so much, he sent her flowers after he heard it.
Hauntingly beautiful. Prince May have penned this but she owned it.
She reminds me of Audrey Hepburn in the face.
Amen
Sinead was always a troubled soul, but I think the world is definitely a worse place without her.
She really was an enigma.
Prince wrote this song , Sinead did a great job. I believe the credit goes to Prince for writing the song. She did take it to another level. It's always a crapgame to give your song up. She could have sucked but she did a great job.
A couple things about the song itself, one I knew already one I found out while watching a Sinead documentary. The song was written by Prince as we all know but it wasn't to be a song for him. He wrote it for an upcoming band on his new label called "The Family". They didn't make it to the big time sadly but when Prince heard Sinead's version he basically gave her the song. He didn't want her version to be called a cover version because it was too good. What I didn't know until the documentary was that Prince actually wrote this about his long term housekeeper. She basically did everything for him, all he had to do every day was get up , get dressed into the clothes already laid out for him. Go into his music room and write songs and play guitar. Everything else was done by her. However her dad fell ill and she had to leave and move away and he had no idea how to manage. He didn't even know where the shops were, that is what the line means near the end "All the flowers that you planted ..... etc" is about. When Sinead sang that verse it made her think of her mum who had recently been buried and it made her cry. She had a bad relationship with her mum mostly but had reconciled before losing her. Great reaction and RIP Sinead, like Delores, gone way too soon.
It was written by Prince, but he didn't record a proper version of it until after Sinead O'Connor had made it a hit around the world. He wrote it in 1984 for a side project he had with a group called The Family (you can find their version on YT). He recorded a demo of it at this time, but didn't record his 'proper' version of it until 1993, some 3 years after Sinead.
I suggest you hear the Prince nothing compares 2 u cinematic mix. That is the vault original track. That is a great version and better than the family version.
@@jjjones8609Sinead is head and shoulders better. This is her song. 🤷
A great song, a great performance. RIP Sinaed 💔
You really should see her singing this live. she's absolutely amazing. Incidentally, her son committed suicide in 2022, aged 17 years and sinead passed away in 2023 from natural causes aged 53 years .RIP
More from Sinead: "The Emperor's New Clothes," "Three Babies," 'Troy," "The Last Day of Our Acquaintance."
Sinead's mother was mentally ill and abusive to Sinead in childhood. This trauma haunted Sinead in her relationships, but at the same time she still loved her mother.
35 years later the song still gives me tears instantly, and yes I had a teenage breakup when the song was on the radio for months, it's a good memory do, she was great and we had a great time
Song of the year when it came out!! Tears!! R.I.P. Sinead O'Connor!! Classic Music Video!!
And that paused of the video (show Sinead) at the end of your video was the iconic photo used for the single cover (Cool) I think Prince had over 10 of his songs covered by females artists and were big hits!!
I put Chris Cornells (SiriusXM) version of this song in my top 5 of all time... and I don't even like his music but that performance is pure magic.
Such a sad and beautiful song. One of my favorites in my lifetime.
Beautiful girl, stunning voice, amazing performance. She deserved a better life.
I remember when this song came out. Its influence on my mother was incredible. My mom and step father where seperated at the time ,whenever this song came on the radio ,at home or the car she would sing along with with so much heart. Within weeks she was back with our step dad. And they would spend 12 very happy years together b4 he passed away. So cheers Sinead 😊
Every time I see this video, I tear up. Such authentic emotion by Sinead. She was a very passionate about her beliefs. RIP Sinead. Another great Irish singer you should checkout is Enya. "Orinoco Flow" and "Only Time" are two of her hits. Thanks.
This one gets me every time when she cries, but another one is "Stay" by Sugarland! Cannot watch that one without crying!
*Phil and Sam* ALWAYS loved this one.! You *MUST* *MUST* check out Chris Cornell's version of this.!!! It's at a Sirius Radio Studio, him, another Accoustic guitarist and a Cello player.! It is mind blowing how AMAZING his version is.... Much Love..... David.....
I suspect almost everyone watching this reaction video will know the song was written by prince. Glad you’re doing Sinead’s version. It is iconic for us slightly old folk. Well done
The tears were about her relationship with her abusive mother. Troy is brilliant. Again about her mother.
I've been to a wedding where this was the first dance for the couple!
The entire place sat watching, looking at each other, jaws on the floor. Turns out the couple had never listened to the verses and thought it was a happy love song.
The writer of the song is Prince
Sinead was the first time anyone heard this song on the radio or mtv.
She was the first to record and release it.
Prince didn’t record or release it until well after she had made it a hit.
ABSOLUTE PERFECTION-
SINEAD'S PERFORMANCE OF THIS MASTERFULLY WRITTEN PRINCE SONG
She liked this song cause the lyrics related to her terrible life especially with her mother who treated her very badly,
who made her sleep in the backyard
Song was wrote by prince but she made it her own and is without doubt the best version of the song,
i was 22 when this came out and out of all the worldwide chart topping this had for me biggest impact for a bunch of reasons,
starting with unique up close and personal to show how she was feeling including real tears towards the end,
it was unique for this and brought the world to a stand still like a one minute silence kind of thing,
it was also number 1 everywhere 19 countries roughly
Yeah unique masterpiece no doubt about it in every way
Prince wrote it. Check out Chris Cornell's version. R.I.P. Sinead..R.I.P. CHRIS💚💔💜
And RIP Prince
@@christophercrochet5454 💜
Prince wrote the song but it is Sineads song. 😢❤
Also Sinead's version of the Elton John song Sacrifice is breathtaking.
Sinéad was “discovered” singing Barbara Streisand’s “Evergreen “ at a wedding.
Prince
yeah we know....
Her name, Sinead, is typical and traditional Irish in origin and pronunciation. O'Connor is an ancient Irish surname which goes back centuries, the O' signifying that the family was part of a larger clan or tribal group headed by a chieftain named 'Conor', or a variation in spelling of that name. I had great grandparents who emigrated from Ireland by that name.
This is a song that no matter how many times I hear it that it just touches my soul. I love the camera work in this video.
It totally sounds like Prince. His style is undeniable. RIP Prince and Sinead. Another banger by Prince is “Somewhere Here on Earth” live on Jay Leno. It has the same flavor. ❤
RIP Sinead❤
PRINCE! he was everywhere in the late 70s and through the 80s!
RIP sweet girl.
You should've reacted to the live version it really highlights how good she can sing. Irish legend. Tiocfaidh ár lá
Sinead was a great singer, she was totallly commited to her art and her beliefs, she literally changed Ireland and it cost her (she tore up a photo of The Pope on live US TV) Her mother was a very ill woman who beat youngSinead and Sinead suffered all her life though Sinead forgave her in the end, but she had great joy and great tragedy in her life too...her son took his life aged 17 and Sinead its said never got over it. She died alone in London....maybe it was a broken heart...she was a very kind and generous person expecially in her home town of Bray just south of Dublin where she lies in peace...RIP.
Two issues with your comments, in what way did she change Ireland ? and she is buried in Dun Laoghaire, not Bray
I think what he means is Sinead single handedly with one act of defiance on US tv laid waste to the grip the Catholic church had in Ireland and brought on a more humane approach by the church. Up to this time the church ruled Ireland with an iron fist and were revered like deity , they could do no wrong.
@@jameswiglesworth5004 actually its Monkstown but to most people neither would mean anything, it wasnt a geography comment just a general one
@@irishguy200007 well put
Prince wrote it and Sinead did the cover of it. I'm not sure why Prince included that passage the way he did - mama - but Sinead 100% took that as a reference to her mother, with whom she had a very hard relationship, and then her mother died in a car accident when Sinead was 18. Those tears and emotions welling up were 100% real. I've heard it said that Prince was born to write this song, and Sinead was born to sing it. Couldn't be more true. The video is stunning. Her eyes and beauty. What a depth of soul, and she sings with almost overwhelming emotion.
It was said that the shots they showed in the instrumental break were supposed to make up most of the video, then they realised the close up shot was so powerful that they decided to go with that, including the outside shots just because they'd taken effort to get so they wanted to still include them in some way.
This was such a popular song back around 1990. It was played everywhere along with MC hammer’s can’t touch this.
Angelic voice
You guys should see the live version of this !
Iconic song and interpretation. Took me back in time to my younger days...FYI it's the only version I know. Now I'm gonna have to go and listen to the Prince version. Thanks!
Saw her June 13, 1998 Guinness Fleadh Randall’s Island NY. Van Morrison backed out as the closer because of the rain, but she had no issues, she was fantastic in the rain and spotlights and I was 25 ft away.
This song was stunning when it first came out. It still is stunning after all these years. I was telling my husband that back in our youth every single song was wonderful. 60, 70's and 80's. we were lucky and at the time took the music for granted.
Look at those beautiful, soulful eyes. She was truly stunning.
“Keening” is an ancient Celtic way in which women express profound grief. It is a vocalization of crying, wailing, screaming. Very powerful and u settling to hear. You should look up examples if you are not familiar.
Prince wrote and recorded a demo of the song which he then gave to his band The Family. They used it on their one and only album. Sinead then released it in 1990. Prince released a version in 1993 and then his original demo was released in 2018.
As others have already said, Prince didn’t end up doing much with this song. But his lyrics, when he sings of “mama” he’s talking about a girl, a love interest. For Sinead, “mama” is literally about her mother, who she had a very difficult relationship with. Hence how much more emotion she was able to channel into this song.
RIP,Sinead,so missed❤
Sean and Seamus, also - it's just the Irish pronunciation of Gaelic. Prince wrote this song, but even he declared that she OWNED it, after producing this cover. It's one of the saddest, most heartfelt deliveries in recorded history.
Prince also wrote "Manic Monday" by the Bangles. That's a catchy tune. Prince also covered "Motherless Child" and "Creep", both bangers.
Her tears were real as she recorded this a few days after he mother had passed away even though she had a terrible relationship as a kid with her.
All kinds of everything with terry hall and sinead, a old Dana track from Eurovision
Prince 😊 Also you might enjoy one of her earlier hits, Mandinka, more Celtic and Tribal. Fun reaction and review
Sinead was fiercely human. After Lennon, she was my favorite. In this video, her disembodied head subtly conveys that breaking apart, her inner turmoil.
it is MANDATORY that you watch the live version from Chili... so much emotion in a song she has sang hundreds of times.. such a great performance...
Such a beautiful video! She's so beautiful in this. Iconic.
Prince wrote this beautiful song. R.I.P
Ive been told that Prince wrote this for her , and its about her mother not a lover that had gone away or died , this ive since heard that that is wrong , but im keeping it coz i like the story rather than a love . RIP Sinead love ya
Yeah wrote by Prince ,sung by an angel
You owe it to yourselves to watch the live performance in Chile. Soooo much emotion.
Mandinka was her hit before this. She also does a lovely version of the Irish language song ‘o ro se do bheat abhaile’ and a collab with the pogues ‘haunted’ - all great to check out
Her tears were real, she started thinking about her mom who had recently passed away.
Love you to do a reaction to Sinead's songs 'Three Babies' and 'TROY'. Both Amazing songs.
This was an enormous hit in 1990 (the tears WERE for her mother, despite the lyrics in the rest of the song). It was the first time most people heard of Sinead, although her first album a few years earlier was a college radio mainstay. This song is not typical of her other work. From that first album, Mandinka, Jerusalem, Troy, Drink Before the War, and Jackie are favorites. From the second album, Last Day of Our Acquaintance, Feel So Different, I Am Stretched on Your Grave and Black Boys on Mopeds are also great songs. She had a tough life after this early success. It wasn't always pretty. But the voice and the writing are transcendent.
Sinead's mother died before she released this song, and that line broke her. Another great song from Sinead is, "I Want Your (Hands on Me)".
You should check out the live version 😊
You need to react to live ver, it’s beyond good!!
Arrepiante ... !!!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I'm excited to watch your reaction on this on. It's classic cover of Pince. This was huge for high school dances. I hope you enjoy it.
When Sinéad cried In the video, it was a real tear. In the Rolling Stone Top 500 songs issue, she said, "I didn't intend for that moment to happen, but when it did, I thought, 'I should let this happen.'"
In her memoir Remembering O'Connor explained that the lyric that triggered the tear was:
All the flowers that you planted mama
In the back yard
All died when you went away
Her mother, who was abusive toward her, died in a car accident in 1985 when Sinéad was 18. That day, she removed the photo of Pope John Paul II from her mother's bedroom wall; this was the same photo she tore up on Saturday Night Live. When O'Connor shed the famous tear, she thought she had ruined the take, but director John Maybury recognized it as a very real and visceral response that would belong in the video. She also remembered being made to sleep in the garden for several weeks when she was just eight, and being refused back into the house despite her pleas. 'I'm out in the garden in the dark - I still hate dusk to this day - and I'll be looking up at the only window on the side of the house where she'd have a light on and I'd be screaming, begging her to let me in, and she wouldn't, the light would go off, and the house would go dark." Peace out.
The best and original Prince version is “Prince -Nothing Compares 2 U (cinematic version)”.There is no video-but there is sound recordings on line and UA-cam. The first official release of the song was “The Family” (a band Prince created to put more of his music out. Prince just wrote and produced for these extra bands he created to cover his music. Sometimes Prince would just record the albums by himself and just have them sing their parts to add their vocals to the album.).
Another excellent version of nothing compares 2 U is Chris Cornell’s version live.
The “mama” line is just not been changed from the original prince lyrics. Because Prince sings, I could put my arms around every GIRL I see and later references that all the flowers died when she(his lover) went away. Meaning both literally the flowers died; because she nurtured them; but also simultaneously some of the joy and beauty went away.
Greetings from Germany. It‘s not the first time I watched you and I want to tell you that your reactions are the very best on u-tube 👌
RIP Sinead O'Connor
💉
There is a live version that she kills it
When you said “keening” it reminded me of a Carol Burnett episode with Robin Williams called the funeral!!!
RIP Sinead 🙏
This is a song about being broken hearted. It applies also to loosing someone to death. I lost my partner of 37 years to cancer last June. This song fits every emotion I have felt since then.
Apart from the song being about a break up with an ex. The part where she mentions "All the flowers that you planted, mama In the back yard, All died when you went away" referring that he was the only one who looked after them and they all died when he left.
The tears soon followed after mentioning "Mama" as she was thinking about her mother at the time who passed away 5 years earlier.
You should watch the live version it's a lot better the power & emotion she puts into it is awesome
Una de las mas grandes canciones de los 90s
about the Tear falling and why it happened because of the Part Mentioning Mama and the flowers that Mama planted in the backyard (Sinead's Own Mama who passed away in 1985) popped into her mind during that lyric and imagined if Her Mother could have been like that instead of a Abusive Monster towards her growing up that was the reason for the Natural Real emotion single tear falling moment....so that tear was and also was not for Sinead's Mom
I love the argument that this isnt the "original" version. I dont doubt that Prince wrote it and he "may" have recorded it but he never released any version nor did anyone else until AFTER this one so in my opinion, this is the original.
The Chris Cornell version of this is a must listen.
The live version is insane
