I’ve had this light in my pocket for just over a year and it’s never let me down, early mornings at the yard for work, inside basements of newly constructed high rise building or unpacking at night after work or a hunting trip. I love this light, I think I’m fenix for life 🙏🏼

Been watching other videos on this light and this is easily one of the best. Majority of the others sound like an infomercial where they're just reading off the specs. I appreciate you going into details not given by the manufacturer and showing the light in action. Thank you!

I agree with you, tha user interface you mentioned (side switch for low modes and tail switch for turbo/strobe) would be perfect. Also, I'm glad to see Fenix increasing candela and catching up with the competition. It is almost perfect.

I just retired my original Fenix PD35 and it’s still going strong, the only reason I’ve retired it is because it has too much sentimental value to me for something to happen to it. So it’s nightstand duty from now on. I have surefires and stream lights but my PD35 will always be my favorite duty light

I loved your review and thankyou for your honest appraisal. I have this same light and for my needs it is perfect. I would like to say that I think that you are a little harsh about its memory of the last use output. I too want it to power on at the 5 lumen setting. From there I can cycle easily to whatever brightness I need. So, I've trained myself to power it down to minimum before switching it off. It's hardly an inconvenience on what is an excellent flashlight (or "torch" as we call them in the UK). Anyway keep up your great reviews........ Subbed🙂

Great review but can't disagree more about the UI. Having one button for power and one button for brightness is perfect and dead simple--exactly what I want. But I understand people have different preferences--I wish more flashlight manufacturers allowed the user to customize what the buttons do. Especially since a lot of flashlights already have USB C--just let me plug it into a computer and customize things with a simple utility.

I don't mind the UI at all. I like how it turns on at the brightness I left it at. However I use mine at work, always turning it on and off. I would hate it if it either started on the highest setting or the lowest setting and than I had to adjust from one of those two points. I would constantly be fumbling with the mode button.

VERY good review - I fully agree: If it wasn't for the absolutely horrible (and inconsistent) user-interfaces Fenix could be very interesting!
I was wondering why you didn't mention it:
For a simple 16340-light the PD25 is way, WAY too big:
with that 'footprint' in your pocket the light should at least use a 18350 battery!

I can't remember if I commented on this video before. I think I own every version of the single CR123 P series Fenix lights (and a bunch of the 2CR123/18650 PD30 series), from the original P1 in the late 2000s, P1D, P2D, PD20, etc etc. I've been EDCing the PD22 UE at home and PD25 when out, and finally got the PD25R last year. Unfortunately while I do like things like the charging port and output, I don't like the tint, I prefer the more floody light pattern of the previous lights, and I'm not a fan of the pocket clip placement. I'd prefer if they'd kept a deep pocket clip on it. As it stands, the PD25R just sits on my computer table as a backup and I'll continue using the PD22UE and PD25 til something better comes along.

My problem is the side buttons on those flashlights. I have an early model tactical light that is over 15 years old. It has three modes accessed by how you click the one rear button. One click is always high mode, two rapid clicks is low mode, and 3 clicks is strobe mode. All the people I know who have bought lights with side buttons have had them fail catastrophically and unexpectedly in 4 to 5 years.

And I'd leave the side switch on the 5 lumen mode so I can see menus in restaurants LOL! Basically, it needs the OL interface. I've been on the fence for so long for this light but I may just pass it up again. OL is coming out with the WM3 today and it seems to be even better than the WM2 although I'm thinking Feniix would still win on the build quality between the two. Keep up the great work!

I don't understand the problem with the UI , I actually really like it . I just cycle back the light at the lumen level I use the most before turning it off , this way it's at that level whenever I turn it back on .
If you need to access the high output without cycling through the modes they make the tactical lineup for that .
Fenix make brilliant quality flashlights for a competitive price , of course there's always room for improvement but overall they're one of the best imo .

A higher candela value is not automatically better. It depends entirely on what you want to do with the flashlight. Indoors I find a higher candela value even disadvantageous. And even if you want to illuminate the path in front of you, the candela value should not be too high. It's a bit like asking which is better, an off-road vehicle or a sports car. :)

I feel the exact same way about Fenix UI. So frustrating! It's like they're hell bent on not listening to their customers base and just doing it however they want to. I've never seen another flashlight manufacturer so intent on frustrating their customers. Their flashlights are made so well, they use such good quality LEDs (with nice tint). And you're exactly right... I think they do one of the best jobs with lumen levels. They always space them out so nicely. And they always include something right in that 150 lumen mode which is what I personally use most of the time. Plenty of output and plenty of run time. But their UI drives me crazy.
Come on Fenix.... GET WITH THE GAME! 😎👍

Maybe we need to speak louder, or at the right place. Me, and a few guy had a conversation about that hidden USBC, where we stated NOT having a charging port is better than the little flimsy rubber cover, so if they want a charging port, for an outdoor/tac/EDC light, PROTECT IT. when i need the light, i NEED it. And they delivered. (Tbh, it was a Q&A type post, from the admin of the official fb group) join the community, and raise our voice :)

It's quality but if you are going to get an 18350 battery flashlight you can get alot more compact and shorter. If you are going to buy an 18650 battery sized light, then just buy an 18650 light, You will gain more light and longer run times. Stack two 18350 in an 18650 flashlight and witness the extra power. It can blaze. Be careful though and read if your light can handle two 18350s or it will meltdown,,,,,not happened yet though even with cheap hosts....this is how you get max power/ run times per weight ratio.. A compact 18350 example is the Olight Warrior Nano. Really good light

Totally agree regarding the UI. I was completely sold up until that point, instant turbo on the tailswitch is a big one for me. Also the access to stobe is silly I'm definitely hearing you mate - when needed it would generally be in a "hurry/without thinking" situation.
That's where I feel Nitecore's i-series lights have hit it bang on the mark! That tail switch, main for instant turbo and a smaller secondary tail switch for instant strobe just nails a UI in my opinion. Especially for what we have to pay over here is Australia you definitely want something that ticks 90% of the boxes not just say 70%-80%...

I love the Olight UI on the Warrior 3 where the tail switch can be either (half press/full press) medium/turbo or turbo/strobe. Then a more “normal UI” on the side switch. I really think Olight nailed the UI with many features without being too confusing.

    • @Reflect744
      @Reflect744 2 роки тому

@@DocDazzler Yes I agree the Warrior has a good UI. I just feel Nitecore's i-series approach having the main tail switch (half press momentary turbo, full press locks turbo on) secondary smaller tail switch (basically the same UI as the main but offering direct access to strobe) is a very unique & great idea on there behalf.
Side switch like the Warrior cycles through the modes (Warrior 3s is the only Warrior I own so can't relate to possible other Warrior UI's if that's what your referring to etc...I use the Thrunite Catapult series as my throwers if your meaning that particular Olight Warrior range, so my mistake) Similar but yet having that smaller second tail switch assigned for direct strobe is something in its own league. Just my personal opinion. I definitely agree with the Olight Warrior UI being great, I think Thrunite where tail switches are applied are using very similar interfaces as the Warrior. I'm a Thrunite fan but yet to own any tail switch models so don't quote me on that.

Any chance yoive also used the HM50R Version 2.0 headlamp? If so, curious how you'd compare it to this PD25R.

Wow ! Thank you sir for stating the truth about the Olights ! You’ve been the only you tuber I’ve ever heard mention that Olights can only use their own proprietary batteries. That’s the exact reason why my go to lights for everything are fenix lights.

Nobody needs a tailstand more than they need that wonderful rubber switch, that enables momentary activation.
Most of the real world isn't perfectly flat and level and sturdy anyway. Just prop it up against something.

I am looking for a perfect flashlight for years and I realized it doesn't exist. 😀 I want 2700-3000K light (no white or almost blue like it's common, that's not good for night), I want on/off button on side (not on tail) and I want extra slider for selecting modes where I can see in which mode it is and I can change it before I turn it on. That would be my perfect flashlight. Also, modern 21700 cells would be nice. Such flashlight doesn't exist. And what is also very important for me is flickerfree light in low light modes, most of flashlights are flickering when it's not on 100% which I totaly hate, it's making stroboeffect and it's annoying.
Yes, I am a flashlight nazi, but when you are in some dangerous situation, most of today flashlights will kill you in the night, not even talking about some tactical usage when you are a security or policeman or something like that. I would love to have a flashlight which is 100% analog with no computer and chips inside, but it seems like it's almost impossible with today LEDs, only for some max 3W LEDs with only on/off. Old flashlights are the best, you feel when it's turned on because of there is mechanical switch which just connects conntacts, it was tactical before producers called it a tactical.
On/off and changing modes with one button should be illegal.
Most of flashlights on market are totaly useless.

You hit the nail on the head. "UI can make or break. a light"....I couldn't agree more. Which is why till FENIX smartens up and creates at least a UI on par with everyone else e.g. 2-clicks for instant Turbo and 3-clicks for Strobe (those who feel they need Strobe)) I'm not buying another FENIX light...I own their TK16 (best "tractical light" to this day IMHO...I can understand being forced to cycle through the modes...even through Turbo in a high stress situation...you don't want to think...just press the mode button (TK16)....still....would be better in V3 (2023) if they introduced 2-clicks for Turbo. You don't want to blow out her night visin everytime you need to cycle back to ECO or LOW...more so on EDC lights or keychain lights. tiny AA batter using lights....FENIX needs to hire a new UI guy

Never had lights "blowout" my vision when I am not looking into the beam...when I am behind the beam...it is of little consequence. But, then, I am not looking for reasons to penalize a light...that Fenix is a fine light that anyone should be able to use without much issue.

I have no problem with the interface.....i would have liked Fenix do do away with the charging port on the actual light.....no need for it... just supply a battery with a charging port....what would happen if you plug in the flashlight with a 123 inside ? Another thing i dont like is the rubber button not allowing the light to tail stand....that is a no brainer... put a smaller button or a metal one. Will wait for Fenix to correct these things....

I've tried several different brands of flashlights. The Fenix works best for me. The proprietary magnetic charging system is a real pain for me on the olight. The quality of the Fenix lights seems to be a step above anything else. The UI is not ideal, it's something I've gotten used to. The Thrunite flashlights are cheap junk

WHAAAAAT. No tail stand on a phoenix? The really messed up on that tail cap because the whole design of the tail cap is for tail standing on their lights. Everything you said about it up to that point was selling me on this light. Then yo covered the UI and I cried. But not really because I hate this size of lights. It's to big to be comfortable pocketed and not big enough to be as good as the next class. I Run the p12 for a long time now and give them away at Christmas every year. The 12 tail stands and is aaa based. Has a ton of run time on low which is all I ever need in a pocket light. I'm still running my OG warrior since like 2014. I like the UI on it better than all the newer direct chargeable lights which makes me sad because I would love to be able to keep the light on a charger in my truck A light that operates identical to the gen one warrior but in a charging cradle, i would buy at least five of those, maybe ten. One in every vehicle and at least two in the house. Very good review as always.

The user interface is perfect, once you learn to outsmart it. You can force the memory to come on in whichever mode you prefer, simply by turning it off in the chosen mode. So if it's on the nightstand, turn it off in lowest mode. When going out at night, turn it off in highest mode. Nobody needs strobe, and it's just annoying when it activates accidently. You can practice and play with it if you think it's going to be your weapon of choice.

Awesome flashlight; build quality, output, superb tailswitch, light intensity, etc. One small caveat, if you're holding the light tight enough in your hand you will activate the side switch and go from turbo to 5 lumens in a fraction of a second. I really wish they would have just made the light with just a tailswitch. Just like a streamlight.

    Two way pocketclip? Neat!
    The size? Great!
    High candela? Awesome!
Takes a rechargable AND normal CR123? Perfect!
Strobe only accessible via the side switch? Oh god dammit!
I live in a country where anything self defense related will get you in trouble or at least strange looks. So my top priority in an EDC flashlight is easy access to the strobe mode. I could live with any downsides you mentioned, but that's the only thing that prevents me from getting this light in an instant.
