If they make a Wedge 2, we'll pit the Akfeld Pro against it, along with the requested here Surefire Stiletto. Any others wedge-y like?

I switched over to an arkfeld pro a few months ago and I absolutely love it. I use the UV light way more than I ever thought I would. Run time has been excellent. Another point worth mentioning is the laser pointer. The only thing I don't like about it is the clip placement. On many lights, you can change if the light is carried lens up or lens down via clip placement. Not so with the arkfeld. The only reason I mention it is against better judgement, I sometimes hold the light with my mouth while working on short tasks. The clip is well... not very comfortable.

  • @teamja1088

The Olight with the UV light, laser, & flashlight is my EDC go-to as an industrial mechanic. The laser is very helpful when trying show other mechanics a failed part or a leak that is 40-50’ above the deck. The UV light works great with fluorescent leak detection fluid & the regular ‘on’ light is decent enough for most illumination applications. When I need more light it is available too. I dislike the magnetic charger as I must keep removing metal chips from it throughout the day or it arcs out and gets very hot. I also dislike the mag charger because it cannot recharge without it, but the battery lasts for weeks so I leave the charger at home to prevent losing it.

I work in fleet repair and do alot of work at night in the yard. The arkfield has been my go to light for over a year now and I still use it daily. It has a few chunks in the aluminum housing and I've personally noticed that it won't charge off of a laptop usb port or a USB hub but I have dozens of USB bricks I can use to charge it. I've dropped it from the tops of box trailers and it still works, had it fall into used oil but it still keeps on preforming. Thanks for the detailed review! I work in the technical side of theater, lights, sound, rigging, adult supervision. I've had the Arkfeld Pro for a few months, and it is great for my work. I can use the green laser to tag lighting instruments that need attention. Sweeping an area with the UV shows the glow-tape tags we put on things really well. And the white light with different intensities is great. Yeah the mag charger cable is "unique" but it works and I keep a spare in my kit. Important is a good lock-out. With another instrument, I'd wonder at times why my pocket was getting warm, or someone in the booth would let me know my pants pocket was glowing... I still carry a Nitecore TIP (very well used!) as a backup. When you are working up in the rigging, you have backups (for many things).

I really like the simplicity of the switch on the Streamlight: off / on / bright under a single lever switch. Can be operated by feel, and is not as easy to bump and switch on in your pocket or toolbox as a pushbutton. And I really hate those multifunctional pushbuttons: off - on - bright - blink - flash - flash differently - SOS - off, that sort of nonsense.

I’ve noticed that CR123A style EDC lights are making the rounds on Reddit. I bought two right angle lights (iProtec and Nebo, both sold at Bass Pro/Cabela’s) and two forward lights (Olight Baton 4) recently and they are very good. Thank you for making a video on wedges, I have been curious on these lights and I’m pretty convinced on buying one for pen-light styled armament for my electrical work.

I had a Streamlight Wedge for almost three years. I got one as soon as they were trickling into the market. It was amazing. I beat the snot out of that light working in auto repair every day. Thought I lost it... Cried and bought a new one... Then found it in my door pocket! It eventually started to swell so I sent it to Streamlight and got a fresh unit. Now I carry around two every day. Keep one on charge, one in the pocket.

I have had an EDC knife for almost a decade, and when I saw the EDC class of flashlights come out, and being in I.T. comms closets and having to check network jacks behind furniture fairly frequently, I bought the Nitecore EDC thinking it would just be an addition to my work go bag for emergencies. I've now worn it daily for a few months on my other side pocket and can't believe how useful it's been. I always wondered if maybe I blew too much on the thing, but your review makes me feel like I made a solid choice. Thanks for the rundown!

I’ve been using the wedge daily at work for about a year now. Best penlight (if you can call it that) I’ve ever used. It’s survived full immersion in hydraulic oil, antifreeze, and being dropped quite a bit. I get about a week out of it before needing to charge. Thoroughly impressed.

I set a mast down on my stream light wedge with it in a pinch point
It bent, yes, but did not shear, supported the mast untill I performed a final function check of the lift, when it flipped out. No lithium battery trouble, it was still lit bent at a 45 degree angle on the flat.

I use the the UV Arkfeld as my daily pocket light in the shop and its been great! Using in on and off in normal uses lets the battery on it last for weeks without a charge and when its low you general don't notice the 1hr charge time. The uv function works to see dye but it is a little dim when not surrounded by darkness, but works. I've been eyeing the new Pro model for its function of having all the features (flashlight, uv light, laser pointer). laser pointer is good if your performing a evap or intake smoke test. Would love to see it tested and compared to the OG arkfeld.

I've had a Nitecore Tini for ages now - it hangs from a carabiner on my belt loop, and at a mere 1 3/4 inches (4 cm) long it's practically invisible (until lit!). It's not a wedge, I know, but it's easily the most usable and useful bit of kit I have, in constant use. I fully endorse Nitecore as a brand! Not a shill, just a very satisfied customer.

I own a EDC27. I think you glossed over the fact that Nitecore is very much upfront that you do not get 3k lumens for 30 seconds (typical ANSI), they even give you a LED display showing you at the press of the button how long your going to get that level of light. I also own a Arkfeld Pto, got it just for the added feature of the green laser. A very specific task orientated light. For General EDC use the EDC27 kicks the crap out of it. But as I said I like the Arkfeld for specific tasks needing a laser. Then you come to the Streamlight Wedge. Streamlight has been a poor performer for me in the past, that is why I chose the EDC27 over it. Now that I have seen your excellent testing. If I had it to do over, I might have gotten the Wedge instead of the EDC27. Thank You for these very useful videos.

That's fair, and why we put both specs % up there. The thing is, if you put the lumen number in the title/name of your product we're going to test it like how any other light that has the lumen level in their title. Hard to make exclusions for one brand or model to suit it. It's an insanely cool and well built light. The only one that feels and has features that match its price point if im honest.
Still not used to the cost for such small little lights.

As a counterpoint, I did not realize the 3000 lumen “turbo” mode had a limited time. It is in the user manual, but I don’t remember that disclaimer in the marketing. That being said, I don’t “need” 3000 lumens for anything, let alone more than 10s of 3000 lumens. Now that I know “turbo” in Nitecore-speak means “short burst”, the marketing materials make sense.

    • @Hawk7886
      @Hawk7886 4 місяці тому

Also as a counterpoint, maybe I'm in the minority, but I don't want a flashlight with an LCD display that I have to look at to figure out how much light life it has left. Props to them for clarity, but a pass for me.

Great review.. I personally have the arkfled pro and the swivel head arkfeld.. both are being used almost daily though the swivel is mostly used, as that function with the clip, as well as the magnetic base, is awesome for handsfree illumination where you need it. i guess it depends on what you are using it for, but the pro is handy for those times when you need the UV or the pointer.. also as an EDC, the size of the unit and its form factor is key for me.. i went with olight as it was the most comfortable for me.. it is great to see that the other companies are stepping it up that means olight and the rest will not sit on its laurels and thus make better products.. again a great and honest review keep up the great work..

Ive carried the wedge for a few years. Ive been in and out of cnc machines full of chips with this light clipped on the pocket at mid thigh. Never had an issue with shit getting in there. I was skeptical at first, but this is the best light ive ever owned. Using it frequently every day, it will last about a week. I bought a second mostly because of the slow charge time.

  • @skoalsoldier

Had my Wedge for about 2 years. When I seen it online it was a dream come true. I absolutely HATE carrying a round-body light in my pocket. It’s uncomfortable. I always thought a flatter light would be nice, and there it was. $79 at MidwayUSA at the time. I carry it almost every day. Even in the waist band of sweat pants when I’ll be out at night. The pocket clip holds great and gives it a deep carry, and it basically disappears in my pocket. I love the switch, though it can get grainy when it gets some dirt on it. What I DO wish it had, though, is a lower power mode. Like 50 lumens or something. Sometimes even 300ish is too much.

Monstrum also sells rifle scopes (very inexpensive ones) and i bought one to throw on a beater rifle not expecting much and not wanting to spend much.
And i gotta say, i did not expect to be at all impressed but i really am, it is by no means even close to high end, but the glass is nice and clear, it tracks accurately as best i can tell, and for what i wanted it to do it's absolutely up to the job.
Monstrum is in that weird category of "if you need something to just work and dont care how nice it is" you'll probably like it just fine, especially when you factor in price. If you expect "nice" you'll be constantly frustrated, but if you just need it to do its job, you can do a lot worse.

In the factory I work at, somehow we get a bunch of free Streamlight Microstreams, and it's like we're addicted to them now. I see some that are so abused that the anodizing wore off, and they still work (in a cool new silver patina color).
Point is though, the Microstream is immensely better suited to the up-close inspection factory use case because it doesn't have a vulnerable charging port, and it's not too BRIGHT. It's 40 lumens is about as bright as I would go; when you're looking inside bolt holes in shiny machined aluminum, it's already trying to blind you. The wedge is definitely more like a Streamlight 1L you can fit in your pocket comfortably, rather than a penlight Philosophy-of-Use. Best part is you can fit both in your pocket so you don't have to compromise!

Yep, under typical use case of intermittent use over a few days to weeks, the indicator light in the switch give enough heads-up to know to charge it overnight at the end of the day. I’ve never needed mine to charge quickly and without a user-replaceable battery, slower charge rates generally leads to a longer lifespan.
