    Thank you for posting this. I doubt this was your intention, but know that your videos have helped me tremendously. I suffer from severe agoraphobia and use your videos as a part of my exposure therapy to get better. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

    Fantastic ride on the 285 Loop. Music selections flowed perfectly with road and I loved the way you mixed the songs together. One of my all time favorites of yours now.

    In 1985, Pascual Perez of the Braves did a couple of complete rides around 285. Unfortunately, he was the scheduled starting pitcher that day and had to be scratched when he didn't arrive at the stadium in time.

      Hah! I’ve never heard this story before! Perez was a big deal in 1985 too! He was the Ace of the staff......I remember those days when the Braves were abysmal, yet they had great players (Dale Murphy, Bob Horner, Glenn Hubbard, etc.) and thanks to WTBS.....their games were shown nationwide, at least for those who had cable in them days......I was 10 years old in 1985 and my household was one of lucky ones that had Cable. Watched a ton of Braves games, along with Cubs games and my beloved Tigers.
      I grew up in Grand Rapids, which I know Jim, you’ve done a ride-by on I-196 in downtown a few years back, and US-131.....thanks for that! I live in the Southeast now, but GR will always be home to me no matter where I live.
      If you’re ever back up in Grand Rapids anytime in the future, you should traverse the M-6 (Paul Henry Fwy).....it’s 20 miles and you get to pass that awesome interchange with US-131 as you detailed in your original video. It’s a great shortcut from Lansing to Holland if you don’t want to bother with downtown traffic.

      I remember it as it happened,I was listening to the pregame show,lots of angst if he was going to make it ,obviously he never got there in time to pitch,Perimeter Perez became a star without throwing a pitch,he was a good pitcher for that time frame,I can't remember if they won or lost but they did win the division with Bob Horner and Dale Murphy and some pretty good pitchers not to the level of Maddox,smoltz,glavine but more than adequate

    Jim, this is a fantastic video! I love your videos in Atlanta! Have you considered taking some videos on the southside, primarily the I-75 corridor in Clayton, Henry and Spalding? Keep the videos coming! Can't wait for the next one!

    • @Freewayjim
      @Freewayjim  10 років тому

      Thanks, there's nothing really unique or interesting about those areas from a road standpoint but I'm sure I'll film I-75 on the south side at some point.

    • @jarrettbell3876
      @jarrettbell3876 10 років тому

      Sounds great! It may be worth noting this from what I've seen on I-285 - the pavement changes appear to signify directional changes. Asphalt is on the north and south sides of the Perimeter and concrete is on the west and east sides. Changing from one direction to another seems to correspond to the road type. Hard to get lost on the Perimeter!

    • @Freewayjim
      @Freewayjim  10 років тому

      Jarrett Bell That also could be that the east and west sides still have the original mid-late 1960's concrete pavement and have only been expanded once, which did not require any work done to the original four lanes as the extra 4 lanes were added to the median. The top and bottom sides of I-285 are much older and have been expanded and in the case of the south side, reconfigured on a grander scale.

Your work is beyond comparison. You plan on doing a video of GA400 north of Buckhead one day? Though to be truthful there's not much to see on the highway apart from trees and the sound barrier.

    Plenty of trees all around the ring road. Is this some sort of beautification project/noise reduction/ROW isolation? Does it lose all trees on winter allowing more views?
    I like longer videos like this one.

    • @Freewayjim
      @Freewayjim  10 років тому

      Thanks, no the trees are normal for the area, it's always been like that, I've never really noticed if the trees thin out in winter or not as we really don't have normal winters here, more like 3.5 seasons as opposed to 4.

    • @Freewayjim
      @Freewayjim  10 років тому

      You should check out video 14-04 to see thick lush trees along a non-freeway, Atlanta is one of the greenest cities you'll see in that manner.

    • @Luvforoneanother
      @Luvforoneanother 10 років тому +1

      It's natural - no beautification project, etc. It does thin out some during fall/winter months but there are some evergreens. Atlanta is a city carved out of the forest - very green, hilly with a lot of creeks and the start of rivers.

Then I'll just edit the two sessions together into a single video.

    Great video! You know Jim, I live in Atlanta and for the life of me I don't know why they won't upgrade I-285 like they do highways in other cities. 285 should have lights, new concrete surface, new sound barriers. Just a few years ago they upgraded I-465 in Indianapolis and they're smaller than Atlanta. It seems like everybody else is doing highway projects, but us. What are your thoughts?

    Old video so I hope you see this, how long did it take to do the whole loop, I’ve been thinking of doing this myself to get a better feel for my city and all the great things to see and experience but I don’t have 20 hrs to go drive on the highway lol

      The entire length around I-285 is 64 miles so it should take around an hour or a little less depending on traffic and driving habits. I mentioned this in the closing credits at 15:03, the 64 mile ride took me 57 minutes.

    Speaking of loops highways, in Montréal, québec, Canada , we have not a highway that dose all the countour of the city (or island) contrare to Atlanta. If we could have one built, the autoroute métropolitain ( Metropolitain highway ) will have less trafic including the autoroute décarie ( Decarie's highway ). There's just one problem. Montreal is a old city and there isn't mutch places to wide highways or built new ones and the other problem is that we have a low budget.
    Anyways great video FJW, don't forget to check the grand prix of Canada in montreal! ( F1 )

    Nice to see the interstate that i simultaneously love and hate in a better “less trafficked” light. I have a love hate relationship with 285 😂

    I have a video idea. Do the Downtown Connector in both directions. Then, fade out on the freedom parkway.

    This might be just my brain messing with me, but are the lanes on the top end between 85 and 75 substandard width?

    • @Freewayjim
      @Freewayjim  10 років тому

      No, I think your brain is OK, They are 11 feet wide as opposed to the standard 12 feet, I-75 and I-85 north of the Brookwood interchange to I-285 are also like that.

      Freewayjim MoDOT is starting to use the same tack in St. Louis. In fact, you saw some of it last summer, 13-01, from 3:18 to 3:58. Widening partly using actual new pavement and partly narrowing 12 foot lanes to 11 feet. It acid test was when I-64 was closed in 2007 and 2008 in central St. Louis County for reconstruction, I-44 between almost I-55 and I-270 was widened from 8 to 10 lanes via lane narrowing, and I-70 between I-170 and I-270 was widened from 6 to 8 lanes the same way. When it showed to turn out alright, even though it was returned to the configuration after the I-64 reconstruction was done, MoDOT got light bulbs.
      Starting this summer, I-64 from west of 270 through west St. Louis County will be widened from six to eight lanes by 11-footing.

      countenanceblog Atlanta started doing it before the 1996 Olympics in order to squeeze the HOV lane in there on I-75 & I-85, in I-285's case, to squeeze another regular lane.

    And you forgot WHY the top end sucks traffic-wise; Interstates 20, 75, and 85 ALL have Interchanges with the Perimeter here - and they are all significant, and not just to the Perimeter, either. (When Amazon Arlington is finished, I-395's seven interchanges in the area are going to look like the Top End.)

      I didn't "forget" anything, I don't go too deep on the annotations, people are here to watch the road, not my comments.

    Hello Freewayjim, I got some questions for you. You've definitely driven in almost every major city in the united states. Out of all the cities, which had the worst/best drivers, which city did you enjoy the most and is it true that atlanta drivers are the absolute worst in the country? No offense to the latter part.

    • @Freewayjim
      @Freewayjim  10 років тому

      The best drivers were in the SF Bay area, I was from out of state, sometimes not sure where I was going and nobody honked at me or impatiently blew by me, especially in the city of SF, which is a tricky place to get around if you are not familiar with it. The worst drivers are in any of the major northeast cities from Washington DC to Boston and everything in between, Atlanta drivers are also not very good, very erratic.

      Check the numbers at 14:58, 64 miles traveled in 57 minutes, that's about 67 MPH on average, not really way fast.
