- Heres how I installed a winch into my 2015 Rubicon Hard Rock bumper. These instructions will also work for the anniversary Jeep Wrangler Jk models. Let me know how your install goes!

Just installed my X20 10k into a 2016 JKU Hard Rock. Your vid helped me make decision to do it. I went with Mopar Winch mount plate. I had to relocate the vacuum pump which took some grinding but the mounting plate didn’t require any cutting. Trade one no cut for another cut. It took me about 6 hours total. 2 trips to Home Depot, dinner, and allowing my son to help was worth it. Thanks for great vid

The vieo was a HUGE help to me, thank you very much. I installed a Smittybilt X20 10-S on my 2018 JKUR Recon today using the Maximus-3 winch plate. I figured while I had the bumper off I might as well add the stinger hoop and a light bracket while I was at it. I watched this video about 3x over the past month while I was saving up for the last few parts of the upgrade, so the install went well. Thanks again for the great tutorial, you did a fantastic job.
BTW...the newer steel OEM bumpers don't need grinding/cutting, which made me quite happy.

Great video, about to install the same winch on the same Jeep. This bumper is factory on this Jeep, I didn't realize i needed a winch plate until watching this video. What are the odds of finding the exact install of ur choice. Kudos on ur editing, don't even have to guess on the bolt sizes. For ur first video I think u did a hell of a job!!! Very nice tutorial. I like how you added the graphics in a clean and clear way. The only thing I recommend adding is that after you hand spool it in you take the Jeep out and run the line to a tree or something stationary. From there you really want to put the Jeep in neutral and spool the line in while someone watches to make sure its going in evenly. That will put the correct preload on the line so when you use it for the first time you don't stretch the line on the drum.

Looking at a recon right now. I am not so interested in the red accents i.e. red seat belts or hood sticker but the updated and beefier front d44 axle, front bumper and hood are very interesting.

The only piece of advice I would have is audio. I know this video is from a little while ago, so you may have already created a better solution, but if I could suggest looking into getting a Zoom H1 hand a Rode Smart Lav (you'll need the conversion cable too) it will DRAMATICALLY improve your audio.

Unfortunately my camera doesn't have an audio input (hoping to upgrade down the line) and I'd rather not try to sync audio from another device. If your camera has bluetooth capability, try getting a wireless mic connected that way. Awesome video. A pleasure to watch.

Rubicon Unlimited You should consider the Rode Video Mic Pro +. It’s an amazing mic that plugs into the mic input of your camera, and turns on and off when you turn your camera on and off. I’m using it now, and it’s absolutely fantastic.
I’m also now using the Zoom H6 Field Rrcorder. You can record up to 6 channels seperately at the same time with it. It accepts standard XLR input, as well as 1/4 inch input (like an electric guitar). Excellent choice for an off camera audio recorder.

Do you think there was room anywhere to mount the silonoid box behind the grill so you could mount a flat plate ontop of the winch/bumper for a seamless look? Do you think there would have been enough room to mount a plate on top of the winch or did the winch itself protrude past the top of the bumper?

Not sure if it was already mentioned but if you install this plate on a Rubicon Recon there is no need to cut the bumper or drill that hole. The exception is if you install a Zeon winch only the vacuum mount has to be cut.
Yeah looks like they updated the bumper mid 2015, I've seen reports that go both ways. Should have been that way from the get-go! Thanks for watching

I’ve got a recon too and I can NOT get that winch plate between those frame rails. How are y’all doing it? I did not remove the factory vacuum bracket... I’ve greased it, 2lb rubber mallet. Nothing...
Nice instructional video. Was that paint an exact match? Can you use it for touch ups? If so, what paint did you buy? I can't find any info on color matching for the 10A bumpers.
+OC Run nope just some black rustoleum. In this case it was covered up by the fairlead bracket and wouldn't be in sight, so I wasnt worried! I'll let you know if I ever test out others.
Does the steel bumper fit a JL wrangler?
If you would have used the little filler piece, the hole in the back would have aligned and not needed to be drimmeled, right?

Where did you purchase the metal cutting 44mm. hole saw and arbor? One more thing, are there plates to be reinserted on both the outboard and inboard bumper studs?

Looks like the same bumper on my 75th Anniversary Edition. I've done 2.5" lift and 33" x 12.5" tires, winch is next.

I installed the same winch and plate on my 75th anniversary unlimited Jeep. I had to cut the vacuum pump bracket to make room for the width of the plate. Bulldog may have changed the dimensions since your video. Their instructions tell you to remove the vacuum pump bracket for clearance, but I was able to keep enough of the bracket and mounted the vacuum pump on the modified bracket. Great video!

Will all of these steps work for the backcountry diction steal bumper? It’s not quite the same but it is a “winch capable bumper” with the delete plate on top and the cable slot.
Not familiar with that bumper so I can't advise. Hopefully this video will give you some tips with the install

I don't believe so, this is the design of the application. It might be achievable with spacers, but more sure what's involved with that. Thanks for watching!
You're supposed to only spool the first 6-10 wraps at hand tight. After that it should have at least 500Lbs tension(ie. the weight of the jeep in neutral pulling from a tree, etc..)

What grille inserts are you using? They look like they wouldn't block airflow, unlike the usual ones with round holes.

Agree with everybody on here, this is a great video! I have the EXACT same setup as you illustrate, however I am having difficulty tapping the plate into position with a rubber mallet like you stated. The plate appears as if it's a 1/8" too wide. Was this the same case for you? How did you get it in place without doing any cutting? I would like to avoid cutting if at all possible. Hope to hear back from you and hear your wisdom. Thanks!
It was definitely a tight fit that needed a bit of persuasion. I'm guessing that the paint on these plates is adding a bit of variation to everyone's experience.

If you putted the control box near the engine. You will have the chance to cover up the pumper from up , I’m I correct ? It will look like you don’t have winch installed at all
It's possible, but can't confirm what's necessary to make that happen
why cut the bumper all 6 holes line up with the factory holes???

I got the exact same setup as you. The smitty solenoid pack sits only a hair from the grille. It looks shitty and prevents the grille from being removed. Have you thought about relocating the pack somewhere inside the engine bay? and putting the winch top plate back on minus a cut where the spool lever is? Im considering it
Another trick is to trim off the clips at the bottom of the grill, just the few at are behind the solenoid. That way it will slide right out after you unclip the others

So I have the same bumper and winch and have a question. The is a long plastic piece that is under the grill that is removed. I was wondering if there was an aftermarket piece to buy that will cover that back up?

Help.....I can’t tighten the 2 inner bottom bolts (to secure the bumper back on ). wrenches won’t fit with deep socket on once winch is in place .... is there a special wrench I can buy to reach these 2 bolts ? Same bumper, same winch, same mount plate ( Maximus brand looks identical ) ....
Might want to try and extension to help you get in there.

Just so you know, you have the best winch to 10A bumper installation video out there, still to this day.... I can reach it fine from top but space is to tight to fit ratchet and socket in the space, extension would be worse. (Wish I could post pics) if I happen to get it squoze ( it’s a Jen word :)) in there I have no way to move / wrench on it ....I may have to stop at a mechanic shop and ask them, maybe I need a special wrench to reach it, idk.... thank you again !
No problem at all, thanks for the kind words! Figured since I was doing the install, it wouldn't hurt to film. I tend to look for these things before an install and couldnt find anything, glad it's helping others with the same project! It's been a while since I did the install so I can't fully remember what tool I used in this instance, but maybe a swivel could do the trick. Let me know what works!
why did yo cut the bumper..? Maximus-3 kit there's no cutting at all.. Kinda permanently ruins the bumper cutting it doesn't it?
Wanted to center the winch in this case. Arguably doesn't ruin the bumper because the opening is covered by the fairlead. Plus, you can always put the cap back on if you dont want a winch anymore

unfortunately bad winch plate
Bulldog Winch plate arrived with 1 small bolt , one small nut and 1 washer and no instructions or part list.
figuring I would buy necessary hardware I spent two hours trying to beat the winch plate between the frame rails. NO LUCK! Winch plate is too wide to fit between the frame rails even after loosing all the powdercoat and frame paint I AM RETURNING THE WINCH PLATE! AND WILL TRY ANOTHE BRAND!!
any ideas or suggestions?
Ahh sorry to hear that! Give maximus-3 a try, they have lots of products made specifically for these bumpers. If I remember correctly they also have a winch plate. Let's me know how it goes. Thanks for watching
Ok, I have watched this video a few times already trying to figure how in the hell you got that plate in there
I got a 2014 RUBICON X which is the same as the 2015 hard rock and the vacuum canister is mounted the same way with what it looks like the same double stupid bracket on there
I ordered the same winch plate 20208 but it doesn’t fit 😡, the vacuum canister welded plate is not letting it slide in
It looks like I’m gonna have to cut that plate off which I don’t like cutting shit in my Jeep if not go with a different bumper set up
Hey, I didn't need to cut anything to do this, but I did help the plate in with a rubber mallet. Sometimes the powder coat can make things a bit tight, but it should fit! Let me know how things pan out, good luck!
Rubicon Unlimited , bit I had to cut that factory bracket, I guess the person or robot that welded that plate on my Jeep was mad at the time. It was the only way mine would fit. If I could share pictures here I would show you. Your video is very good by the way.

Haha you're kidding!? Still works though
Video was good, but I would spent more time finding a better route for the power cable. You can remove the airbox and channel the cable that way and actually gain a little slack. Plus, you won't have a cable running over the top of stuff.
So true! It's been a bit of a pain in hind sight, will be changing that route
