  • In the United States, child poverty has reached record levels, with over 16 million children now affected. Food banks are facing unprecedented demand, and homeless shelters now have long waiting lists, as families who have known a much better life have to leave their homes, sometimes with just a few days notice. America’s Poor Kids meets three children whose families are struggling to get by, and asks them to tell us what life in modern America really looks like through their eyes.
Told from the point of view of the children themselves, this one-hour documentary offers a unique perspective on the nation's flagging economy and the impact of unemployment, homelessness and poverty as seen through the eyes of the children affected.

I think it's worse today than 10 years ago. I pray Sarah & Kaylee are living the life they hoped for today, as they impressed me with their intelligence.

I love these documentaries but I really wish they’d be more recent. They reflect in the past but the present is much worse and it needs to have awareness raised now instead of 10 years from now

It wasn't until my mid 30s I knew anything about my parents hardships financial battles. Didn't even know they had lost almost everything. They kept our world innocent and full of protection so adult issues were not in our ears or in our faces.
I'm so thankful that time didn't have internet and 24hr TV. We were able to be cushioned and live in our bubble of family love.
Not once do I recall our parents ever burdening us with information we couldn't control.
Children cannot control the adult world yet they seem to carry so much of it robbing innocence.
I'm thankful my parents chose to keep hardships from our ears and hearts.
And the mumma keeping all the book. How beautiful.

We now know that all these years later there still is waiting lists for shelters, we have so many homeless people both in the US and Canada…. One thing I did notice about Kaylie’s family is all that space and no garden. Mom could have done so much with a garden, no one would be hungry that’s for sure. Hearing Kaylie say several times how hungry she was breaks my heart. It was sad the family had to get rid of one dog but in all honesty both dogs should have gone considering the kids go hungry and without proper meals. This mom is so hard Kaylie, she truly expected way too much from her, she was just a little girl. I hope Kaylie is having a much better life now.😊

It breaks my heart when parents can't even give their children what they need. 💔
This is reality. Not a movie!

It's absolutely criminal that we treat a population that is the MOST vulnerable without any money to pay for their own snacks, games and toys, they straight up just let you land in a bad life just because you were born to a poor family. Every child should be given a small allowance by the government, they deserve happiness as much as anyone else.

When watching this, please do remember that this documentary is 10 years old, and does not reflect the current state of affairs, that said, it can be worse now, or better.

Walking around looking for cans and bottles for money isn't any different than we kids did in the 70's. It was fun whether poor or not.

2 big flat screen tvs in the house but not being able to pay the rent.... that s not society s fault then! take some responsibility for wasting money when you had still work instead of saving for hard times!!!

Terrible, when the poor bring kids into the world, without a foundation and a decent job to meet their needs. Kids r expensive to raise. I hsve a grown daughter. She cost me a fortune

This documentary is over a decade old. Kaylee and the others must be in their 20s now.
Its pointless to reupload the same documentary over and over again.
Whats necessary is a new documentary on the current situation with the voices and faces of the people who a now in need of help.
