Spot. On. I personally like long striping yarn because they've already figured out colors that compliment each other. Also, sometimes it's cheaper to buy that than the individual colors. I have no problem cutting it if I want to control the color changes.
I LOVE self striping yarn! I have sooo many cakes, its my favorite type of impulse buy yarn. I get excited when I'm hooking along and BAM new color! Also, I hate weaving ends so if I can get the colors changes without the ends im totally here for it!
I've crocheted for 65 years. I love the self striping yarn for simple projects that I donate to needy families. However if I have a project that is intricate, I choose individual colors that I control. Yarn Over, Mikey!!
A thing that I really appreciate about self-striping yarn is that the whole cake/skein generally has the same fiber content, weight, plies, etc. for all the colors. Even if I have to “edit” the changes (and sew in more ends), that is still easier than finding all the solid colors I’d like in the same yarn line!
I definitely agree with you that color control is critical for some projects or for some areas of a project. On other projects or sections of a project, allowing the color transitions to happen organically is charming and entirely appropriate. As you say, the maker needs the option of doing either - and should consider each approach as part of their final project look.
I like the control of choosing my colour story. Usually I’ll control the colours even with self-striping yarn, but with a recent project I let caution go to the wind and let the colours take me where they will. It was challenging in the beginning but I enjoyed how few ends there were to weave into the finished blanket!
My daughter fell in love with a cake that was self striping. I did your suggestion and bought an extra cake. So glad I did becuase then I could control the colors and make sure the stripes lined up on the whole project.
I totally agree with you on color controlling. Sometimes it's ok to just let the colors flow, but others, it really needs to be more controlled. I have also pulled cakes apart to control colors.😊
Putting colors together gives me anxiety! It really shouldn't be that hard but the struggle is real. There are soooo many shades of colors out there that making a few color selections for a project just about makes me cross eyed! That's why I appreciate when a company puts the ombre, stripes, cakes etc out.
I take the Elsa route with self striping yarn. "Let it flow, let it flow, don't care about where it goes, it will change when it wants, so let it flow, let it flow, people are going to love it anyway." 🥰
I like self changing yarn, especially the long striping ones, like caron cakes and Redheart ombre. They allow for more economical color play like with granny squares. It really depends on what the project is, but overall, they are a great choice ❤️ 😍
I struggle with color selection so I love how they will put colors together that I would have never thought of. It makes buying yarn way more fun and less stressful. I also love yarn that changes colors rapidly.
For my mind I prefer to control the colours unless the change is truly gradual, then I just let it flow. It really depends on what I’m crocheting. I love distinctive colours but the blend can produce a beautiful fabric.
Sometimes I want my colors to be specific. Sometimes I don't care. I don't have a problem with matching my colors. So when I am being fussy I will purchase individual colors. If I find a self striping ball that has colors that I like but I want to control the color change myself I will purchase solid color balls based upon the self striping ball. That's just how I play.😁
I never even thought about separating the colors and have passed up some beautiful yarn because I'm not a fan of self striping.... you are brilliant! Thanks!
I agree Mikey. I love color coordination of the striping yarns. I started a blanket this weekend. At first I liked the color changes, but as the blanket became larger, the color shifts disrupted the cohesiveness of the project. Instead of a gift for a friend, it's now a blanket for my dog. He needed another one anyway.
Like you, it depends on the project. I generally don't use them because I need to color control most of time. the only time that I'd purchase it, is if the colors are too beautifully perfect, then I generally separate them to add them in where appropriate
I enjoy self striping yarn. If the color change happens at the wrong time for me I’ll color control. Waffle in the round is my favorite pattern for self striping yarn
Great video, Mikey! And I agree. Some cakes have a lovely color pallet, but I still want to control where and when the transition takes place. I tend to enjoy yarn that has a soft, gradual transition from one color to the next. But they are harder to find. So.....snip, join, weave in the ends and continue onward! 🙂🙃🙂🙃😉 Have fun!
I cannot cannot CAN. NOT. use the shorter color change “confetti” type yarn. But I really enjoy long change color because I can take the colors apart and control them. I love the ombré type color change too
After I saw your video on how you eliminated the untimely yarn color changes, I've been cutting the yarn and maintain control of how I want my end product to look. I really don't like the self striping yarns much for that reason. But now I am the master of my own domain thanks to your tip Michael! BWAAHAHAH!
Thank you so much for this vid & the mention of the spring '22 crochet along pattern! I bought some beautiful self stripping yarn but then it sat for 3 months staring at me making me feel guilty for buying it without already having a plan ahead of time. Legit, would walk by & whisper, "don't look at me." But now thanks to you I have a plan & can't wait to show you!!!! Whenever I finish, can I share it with you on Insta?!
The only time I LOVE self-striping yarn is with sock yarn. I don't know what wizardry they use, but it seems to always work. Otherwise, for bigger projects, I am too much like Mikey - I want to have control over my color changes.
I love using variegated yarn when I crochet scarfs for the homeless. To me, it gives them a 3-D affect and makes the scarf more interesting compared to using a solid color.
Kinda reminds me of gardners. Some gardners will not stand for plants running around willy nilly. Some can let certain flowers spread (politely) around. Some can be ok with a frick'n' jungle in their yard!
What frustrates me is 2 to 3 colors I love in the self stripe that I can't find in a solid ball anywhere else and don't really care for the other colors. It can get very costly to only use half of a ball of yarn having to buy a bunch to finish a project.
Well all those little skeins of unused yarn can be used for little Amurigumi projects or swap them with a friend for colors you do like of equal vqlue.
some days I can match up a few colors no problem.....the next day I look at the same colors and think ...yikes I hate it - what was I thinking.....I like color changing yarn as long as I like all the colors. xo
I know a person who does the control. I like color, did a solid color baby blanket it mentally took forever, thankfully it was baby size. 😅 If I buy the yarn, it's because I like it, let it flow. Lol
I’m using that first yarn right now. Not a fan of that completely unmatchable purple-ish brown in it. Making just a simple infinity granny with some pinks and yellows. I’m ignoring the brown-ish. I’m contrasting the rounds with cream. And wherever it lands it lands. 🤷♀️
I'm cheap. If I have one Joann coupon for 50% off a regular item, I'm going to use it on a cake of yarn. If I don't like how it stripes and can 'cut and paste' along. (as long as I don't have to do it more than a few times in my project).
Even with a "scrap" afghan I want color change at the beginning of a row or round and I crochet over the yarn ends as I go. Therefore self-striping yarn has no appeal for me.
IF I buy self striping, I have searched high and low for a pattern that uses it. I am not creative like most of the other commenters. For me it's to relax.
I like self striping yarn but sometimes I need to color control depending the project. The blanket ogo annoyed me that it didnt transition colors nicely but instead it was tied and a knot. It made it more complicated to try to have enough of certain colors to make the snowflake afghan... then they wouldnt list the name of the colors on that ogo individually which drove me nuts because when the store didnt have enough of one colorway and i needed a specific grey or white or blue. I couldn't match it easily with other colorways, like London or Ocean... what 3 colors are these made of.
I can't help but wonder how they do that! It's not perfectly to-the-stitch line by line, but it always stripes. How do they make that happen when they don't know what we're making or how wide or long it will be? Even when I was a kid back in the (mumble mumlbe), I remember choosing a variegated lavendar and purple and it knit in a sort of diamond gingham shape.
I had never considered doctoring my yarn before seeing some of your ideas on it, but I’m absolutely going to utilize that concept for my next project! Thanks so much! It’s hard to even find other people talking about the concept, or at least, it has been hard for me to find anything on it. Any one have any suggestions on what to look up? I tried different combinations of things like, “doctoring” and “deconstructing” yarn, but it has given me so few options for research.
Self-striping yarn for me is a total BOOT. I do appreciate some of the comments and the fact that for some patterns it works. But since I never know if it's going to work or not until I put in "the work", I have to say no to it. I HATE weaving in strands too. Many of my strands tend to work their way out with wash and wearing, and I'm forever tucking them back in again. It seems the larger yarns give me that problem and I hate it. I much more appreciate the smaller yardage skeins so that if I don't need a lot, I don't have to buy a lot. I'd much rather a company provide yardage options than to create a self-changing yarn that never changes when I where I want it to.
I agree and I always by way more urine than I need for something so I can have exactly what I want when I want it period I usually use six balls a yarn at a time when I'm doing something so I can have the right color, and because I can't get all the same dialots sometimes I have multiple balls of a color and change color every row so it just looks like that's the way the orange supposed to be if it's a slightly different view or tonality of the color.
Spot. On. I personally like long striping yarn because they've already figured out colors that compliment each other. Also, sometimes it's cheaper to buy that than the individual colors. I have no problem cutting it if I want to control the color changes.
Exactly!!

Your crochet example of how the striped yarn worked for you was so amazing and I knew you were too advanced for me.
I love how you explain things. You answer all the questions. You give reasons for those answers. It makes sense. Thank you!
I’m more of a serendipity person, let the yarn do what wants. 🙂🌈🐈🐈⬛💖

I love when yarn changes naturally.
I love self striping for slipper socks the most.
I've knitted and crocheted most of my life with block colours. The last year I've enjoyed using yarn cakes and self striping yarns
Of Mikey. U bring up so many good points! But I love yarn doing it’s own thing
I take the Elsa route with self striping yarn. "Let it flow, let it flow, don't care about where it goes, it will change when it wants, so let it flow, let it flow, people are going to love it anyway." 🥰

I agree! Some projects I doctor the balls and some projects I can let the colors flow. Depends on what I’m doing. Love options!!
I agree with you ,I like to pull the colours apart and do my thing ,my friends often laugh at me for doing this .
I want control over the colors I have separated the colors so I can control.. I’m right with you mikey
I like solid colors. I am so old school! : ) I color control most of all my projects.
I like the long stripes, but I also want to try separating them and choosing my own order of colors.
I always learn something new from your videos. Btw, you look nice in that shirt, Mikey.
I don't mind long color changes. Let the colors fall where they may!!
I struggle with color selection so I love how they will put colors together that I would have never thought of. It makes buying yarn way more fun and less stressful. I also love yarn that changes colors rapidly.
I agree that sometimes it works for my project and sometimes it doesn't

Love self striping and print type yarns. Keeps me going to see whats next and how it works up.
I agree Mikey. I love color coordination of the striping yarns. I started a blanket this weekend. This was a very interesting video. I enjoyed listening to you opine and I have to say, I agree with all that you said.
Great suggestions.
agree with you Mikey!
Control of colors is, sometimes necessary.
I enjoy self striping yarn. If the color change happens at the wrong time for me I’ll color control. Waffle in the round is my favorite pattern for self striping yarn
Like your thinking thanks for this video.

I have to agree Mikey❤
Thank you for the info 😊
I love many of the self stiping, but I'm like you and have to color control in 99% of my projects. Great video Mikey
I love the owl i made only project i used blanket yarn.
Interesting! 😊
Thank you so much for this vid & the mention of the spring '22 crochet along pattern! I get stressed, worrying about changes in odd places. I pull it apart rewind and use, I must be a bit of a geek
I have gotten into getting the amount of wool needed for the blanket size, then separating it out.
I know a person who does the control. I like color, did a solid color baby blanket it mentally took forever, thankfully it was baby size. 😅 If I buy the yarn, it's because I like it, let it flow. Lol

I'm OCD as well then because I never use self striping because I'm too scared it's not going to work the way I want it to.

I’m hit and miss. All depends what project I am working on
Hi Mikey! I need another pattern for use of the waterfall that you taught us!!!
IF I buy self striping, I have searched high and low for a pattern that uses it. I am not creative like most of the other commenters. For me it's to relax.

Call me old fashioned, but i don't like the O'Go's. I prefer regular skeins.
What is the blanket called at 2 mins 23 plz?
Do you have a crochet pattern that shows how to get the color stripes to BE stripes even though I am crocheting and not knitting?
I love long self stripping yarn. I just let it do its thing.
I am trying to understand how striping yarn works. Do you have to follow a certain pattern to get it to stripe?
