    I always knew basic Red Heart had to be washed to become soft. But it survives many washings. I still have slippers made by my Grandma back in the 70s that are squishy soft and nearly indestructible with double strand soles.

    Mikey, I grew up with Red Heart super saver. I didn''t and like the feel, but it has gotten better. You don't have to wash it. I put in the drier on a low setting with a dryer sheet. It makes all the difference and when I give as a gift it feels soft and smells great. Most of my family and friends have pets. They need something that is washable and dryable. I now use all different yarns (shop sales) but I still go back to RH for the great color selection.

    Hey Mikey, I am 80.5 years old, and yes, I grew up with red heart. What was always available. It’s still my go to yarn, especially blankets. I love the bright colors of the solid, and the super savers stripes are great. Yes, it feels a little rough, but after I have washed it with tide pods that have all sorts of things in them, and dry with quality dryer sheets. My items are as soft as can be. And that is truth. It starts out being a little rough, but honestly, it has gotten a lot softer than it used to be, when all the sudden done, it’s nice and soft, and I I’m happy to get the item. Burnette does make nice yarn, no doubt about that. But I have to admit that I love my super saver. I know the colors are not going to fade, and I know it’s going to be soft and squishy when I give it away.

    I find Red Heart Super Saver useful for things that need to be durable. This makes great rugs (either single or double strands depending on the use and season of the rug). I always wash after I finish a large project because I have two shed monsters. I hate dog hair on my projects. So I have never had a problem with the softness. Also I have found (but I won't recommend)

    I have found RHSS to be ruff but with some colors not so much. When I wash it it comes out very soft so while working on a project I know it will soften up. I use several different yarns and brands so I don't just relie on RHSS. Great review Mikey. I made the Arizona blanket with RHSS, washed it, and came out so soft. That was a BIG blanket.

    I grew up using RHSS as the staple yarn in our home, it was cost effective and their colors were very consistent. You could buy more of the same color a year later and know for certain it would match. You didn't feel like you had to cough up enough for the whole project in one go. It's a bit rough but I never minded i guess because that what I was used to using. Sadly, I feel that their color consistency is no longer what it used to be.

    • @annewandering

    • @samplerworker6803
      @samplerworker6803 Рік тому +2

      I ran into the color problem when I was looking for light periwinkle during the pandemic. When the color was available it was definitely darker in color. When I e-mailed Red Heart they said the color change was due to a change in manufacturer.

    • @Lynn-kh5rs
      @Lynn-kh5rs Рік тому +7

      My complaint is not only the color matching issue but also when Yarnspirations purchased the Red Heart brand they discontinues a lot of the colors. I had liked RHSS not only for it's cost but the wide palette of colors they offered. The yarn was a workhorse for wear if making blankets. As for the roughness, you put it through the laundry a couple times with some vinegar and it softened right up. Because of all the changes, and that I personally do not like the Bernat colorways, I ended up searching for a replacement "go to" yarn. It okay not to like RHSS, but unnecessary to be so disparaging of it. At least what it used to be.

    • @jseidel70js
      @jseidel70js Рік тому +1

      I experienced the color issue a few years ago. I had bought a brick red for a blanket and got several, but ended up needing more. The replacement was more of a red red instead of a lighter red. I eventually found closer to match at another store. So far I haven't had another issue.

    Agreed. RH SS is rough but since Yarnspirations bought RH it has changed quality- it’s some better. When washed 3-4 times it gets softer. I have an Afghan that is 45 years old, a wedding present. It’s all RH because that’s what we could get back then. It’s extremely soft now after many years of love and washes. I use RHSS for yarn bombing It lasts and colors stay.

    I like using Red Heart because of the incredible color range and also how they coordinate with the variegated yarns. There is even a chart that lists the variegated yarns and the colors that go with that. I do like with With Love but the color range is lacking. The same with Red Heart Soft. That is also a nice yarn to use but with a limited color range.

    RH SS was always about the only thing I've bought new, due to being so rural, the closest place with yarn is 27 miles away, at a Wal-Mart.
    Except many, many years ago, there was a dollar-variety-store that was sort of like Dollar General, but a wider variety of crafts stuff, called Duckwall's. They had a yarn brand that was cheap like RH but softer. Then again, that was decades ago. Damn, I miss that place!
    However... my new favorite source for yarn is the thrift store about 3 blocks from my monthly doctor's appointment. I can find everything from natural sourced to acrylic, and even "fancier" stuff with shiny strands or extra fluff or all sorts of stuff, often for 25% of (or less than that, on their $1 clearance racks) what the yarn would cost new.
    It's very satisfying finding something I know is made with expensive yarn on the $1 rack! Also quite satisfying deconstructing the stitches, whether knit or crochet. 😊
    Anyway, I hope you talked to your doctor and are feeling a bit better!

I love RHSS because of the amazing color range and being able to pick up more of a color if i miss judge how much I'll need. (I like making blankets but freehand so no pattern guiding me on how much yarn to pick up). It is also what i learned from my grandma (on moms side) to crochet with and is what my great grandmother (on moms side, passed before i was a kid) used, and we have blankets she made that we still use, super soft and look beand new. It gets nice and soft after a wash or two, and is machine washable and dryable. (Since i like to give as gifts its nice to be able to give something that doesn't need special care when life happens)

    Really depends on what I am making, I recently made a Peacock rug for a friend using Super Save crochet with several strands of yarn to make rug a bit heavier, stiff this worked great for this project.

    Thanks for the explanation of the differences between the red heart yarns and also the comparative Bernat. It will be very helpful when I'm looking for that type of yarn.

    Some colors of RH super saver give me finger burns while crocheting with it. Especially the red! Thanks for being considerate to RH in this review. They’re just trying to meet consumer needs and keep their business going. I love some of their yarns, especially their unforgettable line.

      The more dye required to obtain the color, the more the supposed "scratchy" it may feel.

    When I first started crocheting almost 30 years ago, red heart was all I could afford. One thing I noticed, it didn't last as long as Caron or Bernat. I quit using it except for doll things, where softness doesn't matter. When my aunt and grandma were alive and crocheted, it was about all they had that was worth while.

    I did not know that! While I like the colors and value of super saver, I always thought it was scratchy and tough on my hands. I've kind of just ignored super saver yarns ever since. Now I'm excited to try the rd heart with love yarn. Thanks for pointing this out!

    I bought so red heart super saver for a prayer blanket. I was quit surprised that it was soft than I remembered it. I actually enjoyed crocheting with it. I used their ombré called seascape, it was more of a stripe than an ombré. Turned out pretty thought.
