Helios 44-2 Vintage Lens with Swirly Bokeh

- The visual style and aesthetic is often just as important as the technical quality of the image. I find myself drawn to the character and unique look a lens can bring and even though it may not be optically perfect, the imperfections is what makes the image look perfect.
The Helios 44-2. It's a lens that has made its popularity through the mainstream by accident. Its optical design gives a distinctive look that can add a touch of vintage charm to a film.
The soft edges and swirly bokeh translates well to modern digital sensors.
The high resolution and dynamic range bring out the qualities of this lens. Rich detail and tonality while sharp in the center and focus fall-off to the edges sets it apart from others
I have had the pleasure to test dozens of lenses over the years including many that are considered to be optically perfect. However it is the imperfect lens with character if preferred over the technically perfect.
It's all about capturing the essence of a moment and the character of the lens plays a big role in that.
The Helios 44-2 is a lens that needs to be embraced for its imperfections. It can bring simple moments and give it life.
It's sharp in the center wide open but sure, it's soft in the edges. It can ghost quite dramatically when the sun blazes into the sensor. But this is what produces a dreamy effect. It makes reality suddenly appear like a fantasy
The Helios 44-2 is a lot like life. Life will never be perfect. Sometimes you have to embrace the imperfections to the fullest
The Soviet Helios 44-2, created in the 1950s, started out as a copy on the popular Zeiss lens of the time, but as the years passed the Helios took on a life and legacy of its own.
It was produced from 1958 through the early 90s. And there are several iterative versions, produced over time by different manufacturers to keep up with the demand through these years

I picked up an Immaculate copy of the Helios 44-2 about 2 years ago. I used it for a couple photo shoots that turned out great. Now I been playing around with it on my a7iv for video and it has that warmer low contrast look that just makes it look like an old movie. I have been really happy with this lens
Beautiful on these new sensors
I'd like to know how you manage to properly focus with a manual focus lens for video?
@@365_Mike it’s actually quite easy for me with the focus peaking on the fx6. I think it’s just a tonne of practice
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema I think I need to get a monitor to help with this.
I love this. You haVe brought a calm, charm and magic that convinces me to make this my next new 'home' (lens wise)...thanks Jason!
Great video and awesome footage with the Helios!
It's interesting how we gravitate to modern things for perfection as well as to imperfect things for more character, nostalgic reasons. Camera lenses are great representation for this :)
The image is amazing with that extra character
Jason, this video is really beautiful in every aspect.
Very well written, love the narrative. Great video man.
Thank you my friend
Man, looks incredible!
Beauuutiful video. I’ve ordered this lens for my Fuji xt5 and I can’t wait to shoot with it
Great work! Love it!
Wonderfully filmed, written, and narrated.👌🌹
Thank you very much
Wise words and what a footage!
You killed it with this video!! Great Job!
Thanks Steve
This is too good man! Can't wait for my vintage lenses to arrive
You will love it
Looks awesome, thanks 👏
Nice... I ordered a 3 set 37, 58 and 85 of ironglass lenses over a year so hopefully will be receiving them soon. So looking forward to having a play!!
I'm lucky number 700 👍 like on this video - great work and I just picked up my Helios 44-2
Amazing!
Love your creative stuff. Im packing for a work trip and I left the Leica Rs behind in favor of the helios which I never pick up any more. This got me pumped haha
Hahaha good to bring out the old guns
This video gives me Philip Bloom review wibes! Had a similar lens (Jena) years ago with my first self-bought camera, the first Canon EOS M, paired really well. Today I am thinking about buying a rehoused one with E mount to have this pleasure of playfullness again
Awesome footage!
Thank you 🙏
I have one of these, love this lens 🙂
Incredible lens
I have two of these👌🏽
And it’s my favorite lens..
Take all my lenses Zeiss and G masters and let me stay with the Helios 🔥
Wonderful work
Thanks 🙏
This is Beautiful Jason, Id love to get my hands on one of these.
Thank you 🙏
Just found one on Facebook marketplace… $80 😎 super hyped to test her out!!
Crazy i got one the same day you posted a reel about this lens
Haha that’s awesome! Time to get some incredible footage with it
We need more HELIOS VIDEOS ❤❤
I just brought a USSR made Zenit-E that came with a Helios 442 for $45. Didn’t realise how sought after these lenses are. Pretty stoked!
wow! so beautiful video. I was picking between 44-2 and 44-6 now I know
It's amazing how good image quality you can get from old lens that is way older than digital photography.
I recently bought Helios 44-3 Belomo. A lot of people say it's the best of all models from Helios family. But I had no opportunity to test it yet.
You used this on the Fx6 dang!! I thought you were gonna say one is the smaller bodies. But this looks awesome.
Yeah it was only because I wanted the internal ND filter
Amazing work! What was the aperture ring set to when filming?
Great video Jason. I am a new creator and will be grabbing this as my third lens for Fx3 to go with a 50mm 1.2 my question to you is would you recommend I go with the 24-105 f4 with OSS or the 24-70 Gm mark2 no oss? I will be doing video with fx3 and am wondering if the OSS is worth the benefit?
There are so many variations of this lens and lenses like it haha! Do you know of any lens specifically that has these general characteristics but just a little less extreme with the swirliness? There might even be a specific version of the 44-2 that is the least extreme? Thanks so much!
Everyone !! go buy your Helios lens because the price will increase because of this video...
Great video Jason 🤩
Try the helios 44m-4, for me its the best...
Haha they’re already more expensive at the moment
I loved your video! The colours and clarity are stunning, and not over sharp. This looks very natural to me. What frame rate were you shooting at to get slow motion in 4K? Unfortunately for me I can only shoot 60fps-120fps on my Fuji X-S10 and in 1080p. Maybe I will upgrade at some point? LOL! Thanks for sharing this beautiful video! Cheers from British Columbia, Canada!
Wow!! Thanks for sharing.
Jason, if input my phone horizontly , i can watch this video filled rhe whole screen on my phone. This looks so nice. How do you do this please? Marco
got one coming in the mail soon 👀
Do you know if there are any other helios focal lengths that have similar looks/character to create a lens set?
can you please make a video about how did you color graded it ?
there are so many versions and so many opinions on which one is best.. drives me crazy lol.. which one do you recommend is the best for movies and music videos?i really trust your taste .. keep it up and hope to hear from you.
I actually got “the worst” version yet still produced stunning footage. The key is to just find one that is in good condition and it shouldn’t matter which version you get honestly
Wow!
I have a helios 44-2 and didn't realize it. It came on an old camera I picked up from a pawn shop as a decorative piece I just ordered an adapter I'm going to use it on my Sony.
Do you think that the Helios 44-2 has such a unique look that it would be hard to mix shots between this and other lenses? Are there lenses in other focal lengths that you would pair with it?
Hey bro, i love your videos!
Do you maybe know if i need an adapter for this lens i have 3 camers all Canon 7D,6D,R6
Looking to get my first Helios 44-2, is there one you’d recommend- since they were made for so many years?
I’m currently looking at rehoused lenses from BTF, and Iron Glass…
Somehow made a lens video review that was beautiful. Great touch not having any talking head. I'm looking to buy one for the FX6 my company owns.
So, first question, did you have to crop in on the FX6 sensor or did the adapter take care of that?
Second, did you choose the Valdai 44-2 model on purpose? A video I saw from @MathieuStern talks about the different models and I was looking to get a Helios 44-2 KMZ.
Third and last question, what is the adapter you screwed on the lens?
I got the worse quality valdai version. Build quality is not great but image is still the same. It’s a full frame lens so no crop. The adapter was from fotodiox m42 to Sony e
Thank you so much for the response. I'll be sure to get one before my first wedding of this season to take out on some portrait seasons for the couple. Another quick-ish lens question, do you have the Tamron 35-150? I have an issue with it locking into my FX6's lens mount. I guess the real question is, have you seen a similar issue with the pairing? Looking forward to more great content!
beautiful man! did you have an ND outside? if so, what thread size does this helios have?
helios thread is a 49mm. I used my Sony FX6 which has internal ND filters
Hey Jason, would you use the 44-2 on your corporate shoots, or only for narrative stuff?
Depends on the person, but in general I think most would save artistic lenses like that for narrative.
I’d love to see the difference between this lens and something like a 50mm f1.8. Just to see exactly what it’s doing in comparison that makes it special
This lens is not expensive.. why don't you post your own research.
@@Jeff-zc6rr I’m not going to buy it, I’d rather see someone who has both said lens to provide samples. I was curious. You don’t have to be negative
Where and which version to get for Sony cameras
Please send me adaptor link to use it on sony a7iii.
Hello I m using a Sony A7 how can I adapt my Helios lens to it?
I used this lens with my Sony A7IV, it’s awesome
Would be so crisp
where did you buy it from?? I want one too
You have inspired me to get my own Helios 44!
You nailed the focus. All by hand or follow focus?
Thanks. Yeah all hand focus
How do you get the video to fill up the whole screen on UA-cam?
ua-cam.com/video/Tl0KQh2ovC0/v-deo.html
Anyone used this lens with FX30? How does it work?
Все же есть какое-то волшебство и сказочность в наших объективах ))
Which size for nd filters?
I have one that seems to be in great condition, but when shooting wide open (I estimate 1.8-2.8), the image is super blurry and blown out even when the exposure is correct. It seems nobody is reporting that in their videos, so I am guessing it's not normal :/ I have also had very little luck with the swirly bokeh.
Mine is sharp wide open but loses a lot on contrast. There were many defective copies made
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema seems I got a dud. Thanks for answering so quickly! I'll see if I can get my hands on another one. I ordered the last one directly from Ukraine, so I won't give the vendor any trouble.
Where could I find this Lens?
Do one with the canon vintage lens please!
I’ve been looking at getting some canon FD lenses
Watched about 8-9 explainers shooting w/ helios lenses. Every one of them seems to think we'll only every shoot slow motion w/ them. Not one has been at a regular frame rate.
Sheeeeeeesh
Hehe
I see you got the supposed worst version of it(Valdai), but this looks pretty solid to me for being so cheap
I have the Helios 44-3 by Belomo ❤
Best
Thanks
I love this lens... except for the screw mount area. I wish it didn't go inward like that. Fortunately the fixed this in later areas. But its a funny looking lens.
Yes. The lens is not the best of builds
I have 44-4 but i prefer watercolor painting blur effect like pentacon
Great lens and some nice shots.
Pet peeve: slowing down the video is NOT cinematic.
Rarely if ever will you see slow motion used in a true cinematic film but you will see it in nearly every UA-cam video that tries to teach how to make a cinematic video. 🤔
Для любителей и для неспешной съёмки
Convert??
3d printed this lens body..
What adapter do you use for this?
