Waste of time and money Try a different amp like a fender or vox. Try a compressor pedal adjust your eq on amp and guitar before you butcher a guitar and waste money. Practice more too. Tone is in the fingers. When you get better you can coax tone better with touch. Pick choice. Attack etc. I hate all you UA-cam nerds who think buying new pickups is the answer. No one cares.

By the time most people have become a gigging/recording musician we are working on the last few percentage points of our sound, it is subtle but customized parts can change our instruments audibly to our demanding trained ears. It is more odd in the ranks of professional players to find a musician who has never modded their guitars in some way, look at all the custom guitars that have been created by the top tier players, they all want a sound they imagine in their heads which most stock off the guitar store wall guitars don’t deliver without some changes. The Beatles, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, to name just some well known players all did things to change their instruments to fit their desired tones. Good technique and amp settings are part of the equation but the instrument is a large part of it too. You can’t make a ukulele sound like a banjo or the reverse no matter how skilled you are, that’s why they both exist.

Thanks for putting in the effort to make this demo, really well thought-out and easy to make direct comparisons. More similar than different, methinks, but the TV Jones seem to push the top end a little harder. Both sets sound more compressed than I would want, but that's the nature of Filter'Trons I suppose. I have the TV Jone T90 and a Blacktop Broad'Tron in a little Jet that I like to kick around, but the neck overpowers the bridge by quite a lot. Thinking about this Classic set that you have here, seems to balance better and retain more of the Gretsch sound. Thanks again for the demo!

I’ve been playing this a lot lately and it’s really becoming something special. I didn’t get much time on the stock pickups so it’s hard for even me to speak on comparisons directly as sounds can be hard to translate in these demos but overall I’m enjoying the guitar more.

Great demo, thanks a lot. Hard choice between those, but both an improvement on my Jet Electromatic. Thing I’ve found though, with the stock electromatic pickups being not very strong, and a bit dull, is that one has to run one’s amp hotter and brighter, which actually brings a different kind of goodness. So…hmmmmm. Anyway…thanks again.

I did that same pickup swap to a 80's Falcon I had and there was an immediate and fairly dramatic improvement in clarity with the TVJs. I could hear a noticeable improvement in clarity with them in this video as well, although not as dramatic of a difference as on my Falcon. Perhaps the longer scale length of the Falcon played a part in the notable difference.
The TVJs would be my preference for the Gretsch shown here as well.

Great vid. Some parts are barely noticeable, but at the end, the HS filtertrons had more chime, while the classics were a lot warmer with a high end roll off. Taking off some shrillness. Also, those are HS Filtertrons, not regular blacktop FTs.

Thank you so much for this video Greg, you really saved me money, time and hassle! As I can see it’s not like a huge and immediate difference changing the stocks to tv jones classics. I wondered for a long time if I should upgrade those to tv classics but I heard from your very nice comparison that the difference is so subtle and I bet no one can tell the difference in a mix. If you have a chance try Brian Setzer pickups from tv jones, i have them and those make huge difference because of their mid focused tight bass response and overall punch. They say they are tv classics on steroids. But again it won’t be a night and day difference because those gretsch filtertrons are already great sounding pickups.

Glad to save you some money. I didn’t get much time on the stock ones and another comment here said there a bigger difference that needed to be felt while playing. It’s been a while but it seems I remember that same sentiment but in this video it is very subtle.

As a hobby player with a new Anniversary Gretsch, I love the stock pickups (much more chime, sparkle and power than the Electromatic pickups). I was wondering how much "better" or how different the TV Jones pickups would be. Afterall, I just payed top dollar for a pro model Gretsch. Why would I want to upgrade anything. To my ear the difference is rather minor and I love the "openess" of the stock pickups better myself. They are so open sound that I am sure with some tone control and pedals you could get them to sound more TV like if you wanted. Thanks for providing this demo.

The difference is nearly negligible. If I heard them 30 seconds apart instead of back to back, there's no way I could tell the difference. There were definitely a couple specific riffs where the TV Jones shown through a little clearer, but...only barely. I plan on buying a TV Jones Classic set for my G5232T in a month or two. I realise that this vid is years old, but it's the best comparison I've found for these pickups. Both sound good. FWIW, I've gone from stock pickups to boutique back to stock more than once. IME, most boutique have hyped top end that is initially impressive - apparent clarity - but this emphasis invariably means a loss of lower mids, which is where guitar 'sits' in mixes and bands. I have some vintage guitars and the one thing none of them has is that high-end shimmer. Relatedly, is it bad for a guitar sound to be 'rough' or less 'hi-fi'? Do we really want to hear each individual string? The answers to these questions, I submit, are not necessarily universally, or even generally, 'yes'.

I've tried a fee things since then, like 50's wiring and now i've disconected the tone pot from the neck pickup, but it's not there yet. I'm wondering changing to the TV Jones because they sound tightier and brighter than the filtertrons, but was wondering, which pots are you using with your gretsch? The neck was a bit darker than I wanted. Not necessarily muddy but I had to add more top end than I do now. It’s not a HUGE difference with the classics but a little more chime. Truthfully I really didn’t have a lot of time with the stock ones to give them a fair shake. If I would have heard this video before buying I may not have made the jump due to how close they were. Biggest difference is the neck though, so take that for what it’s worth.

I have a 2016 Jet Firebird that came stock with TVJ Classics and TVJ wiring harness. Everything works and sounds fine as it should, but it picks up a noticeable amount of 60 cycle hum. It's not overwhelming, but it is far more notable than on my other humbucker guitars. I can minimize the hum by turning the guitar in certain positions, same as one might do with a single coil equipped guitar. This happens in various rooms and with my various amps. The result is the same for both pickups hence there's no reason to believe they are faulty or flawed.
I'm wondering if you, or anyone else, has noticed this in comparing the noise level of the Classics against other humbuckers?

I plan to try out any FilterTron style pickups, cause it may fit to my style of guitarplaying. I like the sound of both pickups. With closed eyes, I did not hear much difference between original Gretschis and the TVs - maybe a very little more high-end (?) Imo not worth the double of price.

This is one of the downsides to video demos. There weren’t any demos out there so I couldn’t judged beforehand but I will say there is the aspect of feel and response that will never translate in a demo. Would be impossible to explain but for these pickups in particular I don’t have another guitar to even compare the feel to. Hey there nice comparison and neatly presented. I have a heavily modified Chinese jet with fix bridge, roller bridge, m6 heads, graphite, even the schaller microtune tailpiece, and knobs and circuitry improved... She sounds great but still has the stock gretschbuckers (which do the job well in live large as well). Would you recommend them for a basic metal head the TV Jones or maybe the blacktop filtertrons as I read somewhere? I mean I play lots of different things but I´m very agressive in all of them and use my metal resources if they fill in... I mean I come from classic spanish guitar background and I´m a one guitar guy and I would go with my babe no matter to play what. As years passed and I got more into natural simple sound than "fractalish" mentality and I´m trying to squeeze the best out of my beloved log. Don´t take me for a myspacer (thumbs up un your answer lol) but I´m after putting the tone out by myself, I mean take me for a mad man that plays bosa nova and jumps the next song into black metal and wont switch guitars, only for her to get tuned or just to get rest from her weight a little (like stevie ray)... She only lacks better humbuckers cause she got everything so she asks for the best because she has... but this humbucker thing seems to be to take more consideration than when I drilled her for the tailstop.

Yes, there are slight differences but both great pickups. As far as your last question, that's out of my expertise as I usually don't do a lot of pickup swaps but if they are drop in replacements, then you can try it or see of they have something to account for any cavity differences. If I have to start adding or cutting tops, I choose a difference option. Take my opinion for what it's worth though. I'm not a subject matter expert here.

as allways...swapping pickups is a matter of playing, feeling, as mutch as hearing.
I'm quite sure the TV Jones are better, but as a matter of fact, I would really feel it if I play that guitar. That's why those youtube reviews, and for sure your vids, are welcome, but listeners have to relativize a lot.
Anybody can make a cheap pickup sound good if there is a happy meeting between the player and the guitar, or if he upgrades the pots etc...
From the other side, with a "neutral" playing, as you are doing, it's quite difficult too say sometimes.
