Tip: Steve Cropper said in his Mudician's Hall of Fame interview that he used only his Telecaster - both pickups on - for the clear sound it produced and specifically for strumming. I wonder about the difference (in strumming) between Tele pickups and those Gretsch pickups. If one would install the two Tele pickups(wired as one) or one Gretsch pickup (depending on price) as added extras on a guitar, would that give about as good clarity for strumming?
That caught my attention, as well. I always thought I was just paying attention to those types of changes, but now I'll always consider it as honoring them.
Unreal intro to this video ! That playing teared me up. Hearing you play is almost euphoric, but seeing you play at the same time just brings even more joy to the experience.
OMG, that is an inspired solo. That's mastery on a level that most of us, myself included, can't fully comprehend. That's a lifetime of hard work to develop that kind of skill.
It's painfully obvious that Tim's ear, and by association, his brain, works differently than most people's. All of it translates to his incredible musical ability....and thankfully to his ability as a teacher. Great vid as always!! Thanks for what you do!
Backcountrylife Magazine Exactly! I get the impression that session players who play a lot and are in high demand are so capable of playing any type of music because they have to, are generally melodic players as they are hired for one purpose only and that’s to make a hit record. Quick. And to make it palatable to most people. That comes from trillions of hours playing and a great ear for what listeners want to hear.
I get chills seeing Tim Pierce playing and sounding like Tim Pierce. All the jingle jangle mediocre crap in the 90s was imitating Tim's sounds and approach, specifically for Crowded House, which was so brilliant. Seeing Tim "do the Tim" is so pure and enjoyable.
You're a session ace, fantastic guitar player and wonderful teacher. But if im honest, the real reason i watch is just to see another kindred spirit who loves every minute of playing his guitar! You're an inspiration Tim!🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
That guitar look and sound transported me 60 years back I swear... Still have the goose bumps from playing :) Way to go Tim. Those 3 secs of Gmaj-Gmin "honor" is better for me that 3 hours of shredding.
Great solo, never choppy, always accenting the chord behind it, smoooth, and you through in a little reverb twang at the end to remind us it's a Gretsch !!!!
That has to be one of the nicest sounding electric guitars I have ever heard. The range of sounds it brings to mind is astounding. I hear The Beatles, I hear The Church,...
Nice. I like that you talked about the right hand and pick choice options. So rarely is the right hand talked about in guitar videos but it is so important to the overall sound.
Man, that friggin' guitar is friggin' B-L-U-E! Oh, and just as a 'small aside' Tim, GREAT solo in the beginning. As a newbie guitarist, that's how I aspire to play. Phrasings, voicings... flawless. Truly.
Love the way you 'float' on the fretboard, very melodic and the tone of that guitar is hypnotic ..beautiful....though, thank goodness, the magic is in you whatever the instrument you pick up......
I was late to the Gretsch party after years of playing strats, LPs, PRS and just about everything else. After getting two Professional Series Sparkle Jets, one with Filters, the other with Dynas, I’m now a huge fan and understand the appeal. The kicker was getting my hands on the aged, lacquered White Falcon with TV Jones pups. That is a truly incredible playing and sounding guitar. Hopefully one of my kids will play it one day.
How do your Jets sound unplugged ? Do you adore the top vibration adding to the plugged-in sound ? I personally feel the way that most of Gretsch’s pro line guitars mount the pickups to the integral parallel tone bar-braces is really great (sound, tone-wise. Of course, not p’up height- adjustment wise). I’m less familiar with the Jets, though. I got to play one for less than two minutes, and was awestruck at how these look a li’l LP-esque, in shape, or profile, but they do NOT sound like any slab guitar. (Pro-line Gretsches are pricey, so I’ve got to carefully research.)
I love how close we are as a guitar community . Buk suggested to buy all The Beatles records to a fellow guitar player and Tim demonstrates why . Awesome !!!
You are so good... It's amazing that every time I watch you, you somehow seem to improve yourself from the last time... If that makes sense... You are that golden child in my eyes! And yes I do pick up on something every video. It's the little things that add up to be game changers. I can never get enough Tim Pierce!!! Love and light to all... 🎸😷🎸🇺🇸☮
She's a real beauty!! Congrats!! I've just got into situation like you described in a previous video. I played some great solo parts that I sent to a client, took a few hours of getting them real nice..and when heard them..he did not like them at all. The problem was that the client did not know how to explain what he wanted. Had no vocabulary when it came to tones and such..So he came over, I played the simplest thing and he loved it! Took 15 minutes. Super important now for me to play the leads with the client In the room. Thanks Tim!! BE SAFE!!🎸🤟
Aside from Malcom Young’s guitars, that is the coolest Gretsch I’ve ever seen. That colour looks really nice with the relicing. Gives it a sort of steampunk vibe & I love it. Sounds just phenomenal too.
I almost pulled the trigger on one of these a few years ago...I play Strandbergs now mostly because they truly do wear on your body less but at my heart it's Gretsch all day. I still can't sell my Tennessee Rose. Tim, you're the man!
Great video and great playing showing that Gretsch guitars are not just a one trick pony, i.e. “it’s not a Gretsch unless it’s a single cut hollow body with a Bigsby, and you can only play Rockabilly with it.” Gretsch guitars can do anything (and well), but the company caters mostly to those who think what I said previously, and ignores an entire sector of the market in which they could really make great gains. They could seriously challenge G-E, but they won’t. They should.
Tim, that opening playing was fantastic! And your explanation of how you see the chords and how to play over the chords is a wealth of insight. I have a Stephen Stern Gretsch G6192 CS that is the best sounding and playing Gretsch I have ever played. Stephen Stern is a Jedi Master Builder of guitars! And you are a Jedi Guitar Master!
I can't describe how much I love this kind of music and the way you always fit into it with the way you play! This guitar really reflects the sound of the sixties. Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful Gretsch, stellar playing and tones! Love the way you play, and your expressions when you hit those sweet spots! I hope you bought that guitar...it belongs in your hands!
As usual Dr. Tim opens your mind all the time. What I got out of that was all the key subtle modulations within a great tune, listening and hitting the sweet spots. That guitar sounds amazing and as usual the tone he generates is so so wavelike as he glides from change to change. What I say I cant play but I have a plan--thanks Tim
finger thick yet bright top picking, the fantastic recipe for delight...btw what a blessing to giggle with such emotional music surreptitiously, one could fall anytime for what that once depicted as living; passion, serenity, inspiration, all chased until their ecstatic sublimity.
Zero frets - everyone used to hate them and for good reason. Some of the best feeling and sounding guitars (expensive and cheap) I've ever played had a zero fret. Dat action!
Great playing, Tim. Really beautiful. Even more moving is all the joy that just flows from you when you're in the zone! This it inspiring stuff. Thanks.
Funny, yesterday I was just looking at Gretschs on Sweetwater as the new mid-line models are rather exceptional. I have a Gretsch baritone in galaxy black and the deep piano like tone it gets is inspiring. Filter-trons are a thing of their own and I want a standard guitar with some.
That blue and gold is the prettiest color combo on a guitar ever. I swear guitars look their best when they are painted in those 50's car colors. Love it. Nothing beats that Gretsch sound either.
Gretsch streamliner guitars are very nice to play as well, I got one a couple of years ago and the neck is literally the best I've ever played, not an expensive guitar either, but it's so nice to play.
I also bought a streamliner recently. You won't beat it for the price. I just wish it had the thumb inlays instead of the massive ones but that's just a cosmetic thing. I used to play all sorts of guitars but the last few months they all collect dust. I'm thinking of selling everything and getting one high end gretsch to go with the streamliner lol.
@@misterknightowlandco I couldn't do this, I've got guitars everywhere in my house, and a few in the shed, but yeah, the gretsch quality really surprised me, and I've been at guitars for over 3 decades! I've even built a couple.
Subscribed! I love your sound and the tastefulness of your style. I view the neck of the guitar the same way that you’re talking about it here-I see chord forms going up and down it. That guitar does have a really beautiful tone.
This was great, so many lessons in one video. And that guitar, WOWSERS !! That sings like an angel. Would be fun to plug that into a couple different SWART amp models too, the ST45 comes to mind immediately as well as the original AST.
gorgeous looking and sounding axe!! And expertly played of course!!..I usually don't like gold hardware, but with that daphne blue the gold really pops!!My gretsch 5120 actually changed my life!!...once I put the tv jones in it...I got my first real pro guitar playing gig...!! I still can't read well...but can get it done,...with much effort...
Thank you from a lot of Gretsch fans. That “Great Gretsch Sound” is a real thing that is under-appreciated.
For sure!
Bingo...
I wasn’t really familiar with the sound of a Gretsch per se before, but this guitar has a wonderful tone.
This is obviously an amazing guitar. It's a high end custom shop made guitar, it must sound great of course.
Tip: Steve Cropper said in his Mudician's Hall of Fame interview that he used only his Telecaster - both pickups on - for the clear sound it produced and specifically for strumming.

Love the way he expresses what he’s doing vocally. “here it goes to Gm, and you have to honor that” beautifully well put.
That caught my attention, as well. I always thought I was just paying attention to those types of changes, but now I'll always consider it as honoring them.
@@chipgaasche4933 thanks for not being condescending or anything.
Chip Gaasche I’m impressed by his creative use of the English language, in regards to how he expresses his musical ideas, twat.
Unreal intro to this video ! That playing teared me up. Hearing you play is almost euphoric, but seeing you play at the same time just brings even more joy to the experience.
What I hear in your playing is years and years of experience, taste and what I call a ”real master” ... Absolutely amazing
Just bought a left handed Masterbuilt penguin w/bigsby and dynasonics. Can’t wait for it to come in!
OMG, that is an inspired solo. That's mastery on a level that most of us, myself included, can't fully comprehend. That's a lifetime of hard work to develop that kind of skill.
Please keep playing this guitar! This some of the most beautiful playing I’ve heard in some time!
Everything is so effortless for Tim, such a truly great master of the guitar with tones to die for ! 😍🎸👌🔥🔥🔥
I liked that you ran through the chords and your approach to playing the lead parts. Very helpful. Thank you.
I just enjoy your talent and skill. It is just a blessing to hear you make music. Thank you sir.
Master of melody. Such a gorgeous style of playing. Not showy but just a treat for the ears.

Incredible tone! What a guitar... What a PLAYER! Awesome job as always Tim!!! Thank you!
Tim, the pleasure on your face playing that Penguin says it all, and a pleasure to watch, as the music is to listen to. 🤙🏽
