Hello! I have never commented before, but just wanted to tell you, I have colored the drywall paste with paint and it worked out well. I used Waverly brand chalk paint in " Pool". I used about a tablespoon of drywall and added about 1/2 teaspoon of paint. Mixed it with a plastic spoon. I used it on a card for my sister. Love your videos- you are my favorite. I am trying to get up my courage to do a junk journal. Thanks for the inspiration!
Hello Denise! thank you so much for leaving a comment! I love the idea of the chalk paint mixed in.. I am def going to try that! Pool sounds like a color I would love. I am so glad you decided to comment .. thank you for the compliment. and I hope you make a junk journal! you will love it :)
Ooo that’s a good tip with the chalk paint! I just started messing around with chalk paint and I bet the consistency of it works well when mixed the way you described Denise. I’ll have to try that!
Denise, I'm a card maker as well but I've never tried sending anything with paste on it through the mail. Did you mail the card to your sister? And if yes did it arrive intact? 😬
Hi Heather. I used to sell paint and now work for a house painting company. Drywall mud has soooooo many uses in my craft room. I add water based paint (left over house paint or even water based craft paint) to color the spackle. Also, I add a bit of gesso to the mix, as this helps it to keep the mix smooth flowing. :)
If anyone finds it hard to get paper bags now due to all the plastic, I buy Painter's paper at walmart. It comes in brown and green too! It's not as thick as a paper bag, but works great and you get a huge roll for very little $ :) Love your video's Heather!!!
Hi Heather. I love this technique! I usually add regular acrylic paint to color my paste. Sometimes I place the stencil back on top in the same position after the paste is dry and use a makeup brush or sponge to ink it in whatever color I want. Thanks for showing us your tips! ❤️
How beautiful! I live where its very hot and dry and even though my container says it won't Crack and shrink, it does, so I added a bit of glycerine works much better now
What a great tip ! I’m from Australia and summers are very hot, I’ve lost lots of products because of high temperatures …I think you’ve just saved me a small fortune on art products. Thank you 🙏 🤗❤️
Thank you for sharing this. I’m getting some dry wall paste today and trying this technique. It is so pretty. I just found your channel last week and I have learned so much. (I’m 75 and still learning so much from you young gals!) Thank you for sharing your amazing talents.
Hi Heather, I could watch you read a dictionary! Seriously, I adore your work! Adding color to paste is super fun and easy, very therapeutic. I scoop texture paste (more than I need) into a disposable cup. You may use the type of paint of which you are most comfortable. For texture medium, I prefer craft acrylic. You don't need much, just a wee bit. I wish I could provide more details regarding the paint. No can do for now as I am recuperating from total knee surgery. Thank you for sharing your time and talent with us😊
Hey! If you wanna add colour to your texture paste, I use my Tombow dual brush pens, not sure if you have any but you can scribble directly on a slick craft mat and then mix in the texture paste, works every time! Colours come out a nice soft pastel.
I have been using this instead of texture paste ever since Angie’s letter stating she used it. I thought oh good grief how genius. I love your stencils and had a coupon so ordered the rose one. It’s really versatile so many uses. I’m creating pillows currently with your wallpaper digi on fabric. I’ll add a photo w done. Yes I’ve used chalk paint in a ballet 🩰 pink and a very pale mint by waverly . And I do your digis French book pages, French ephemera from a friend in Quebec. I’ve taken so much from your graphic fairy - your channel Angie and your DT and transformed them for the shop. Hugs Heather
I just lightly brushed Distress ink across parts I wanted colored. I also use the lightweight spackle from the dollar store. Tip~ I lay a wet paper towel over the stencils if I use more than one at a time. Prevents drying on the stencil between use. Also, I work from the small tub of spackle and place a wet paper towel over it as well instead of always putting on the lid between use.
Hello Heather, I loved this video. I use quite a bit of drywall paste on various projects (mostly Mixed Media), and I really like using several different methods to obtain color. I sometimes add acrylic paint to the paste, or if I'm in more of an eclectic mood, I will use a spray of choice and let it find a path and run through the stencil pattern on the paper as I tilt it. It's all good... I loved your video. Thank you so much! Betty :)
Hi Heather, I also love to use this kind of stenciling 😍😍😍 If you add color to white structure paste you will get a pastel kind of color. If you like to achieve a settled color you could use a transparent paste... You could add different pigments...try what you have on hand!! Greetings from Victoria
Heather, thank you! I have all the necessary tools to do this, but for some reason, I just thought it would be too difficult! You make it look so fun and they turned out beautiful 💖🤩💖💖🦋
I was originally inspired to do this based on your journal examples. Love the effect. I’m not as skilled as you are on just isolating part of the stencil. I have to lightly tack masking tape to cover the parts of the stencil I want to skip. So fun to see a video from you!
Beautiful Heather! I’m working on some mini journals and I think this would be a fun addition when there’s not a lot of space on a page… just a sweet little “something something” 💕
I’m so anxious to try this. We’re headed to Walmart soon and I’ll run to Lowe’s next door to pick up some drywall sparkling as well. I too would love to see some color added to a few. Sounds absolutely lovely. Thank you Heather for sharing such beautiful and inspiring videos. 😊
I love using drywall spackle as a texture paste. I have tinted mine with the distress re-inkers with good results. You can also use Mica, but sometimes you just need a little water on top of that. I just add a few drops. In my country the drywall spackle for wetrooms (bathrooms esp.) is tinted light blue, so that is nice too. It can crack easily though as it hardens more to a stone like effect. I've tried adding a little bit of glue to it too to make it a little stronger and not so brittle. It's so much fun. I've also tried adding glitter and it's pretty, but you can't add too much as is sort of falls off... again add a bit of glue (I just use cheap school glue) if you put in glitter. So much fun xxx
I spray-mist my drywall spackle with water & whip it up to make it more creamy.. Works like a charm. So much more affordable. 5 gallon bucket cost 16.00 8 oz craft paste costs almost $20.00
Hi I have used spackle paste years ago in my paper crafts and I have colored the spackle paste with acrylic paint with a drop or 2 or 3 drops to get it the color I want. Thank you for sharing i had completely forgotten about this. 😊
Hi Heather, thank you for showing your technique. I love how you are able to choose just the portion you want and make it so pretty. I am going to give it a try. I love watching your videos. You are one of my favorite artists. You never fail to amaze me with your charming artistic creations.
There is also a black texture paste, we often use in my craft group for book cover bases before using metallic waxes over top. Great project, fun to do! 😊💕
Thanks for the tip! i never knew there was black... and to sponge ink over it is brilliant! haha.. maybe that would be good instead of mixing in. Thanks so much!
Madilyn here, I started with dryer spackle paint and just added bits of water until I got it to work for me. So I would just put it back in and add a little water and stir it up then you dont waste your spackle. My spackle was in a small container anyway and I didnt want to waste any. Not sure where I got the small container. Probably at Walmart or Menards.
Don´t know if anyone shared this tip before, but you can make youre own texturepaste quit cheap and easy with birdsand (ore fine craftsand I guess would also be fine). You just need to mix the sand with acrylic paint in the color of youre choice and youre good to go . . . love your videos ;-)
I tried this technique and it’s fantastic. Separate the paste and add a drop or two of your favorite paint mix and apply to the light color papers for a stunning result too. Thanks for sharing Ms. Heather.
💕 Excellent tutorial! I’m going to try this tomorrow on my paper scraps. I have used this spackle to frost a faux cake and colored the spackle with acrylic paint. (Not too much) It worked beautifully 💗
Beautiful Heather! I have used this before when I have run out of modeling paste....I have added in paint, mist like tattered angels glimmer mist/ destressed stain sprays by ranger, reinker for stamp pads works great too!
Love this!! I did this and wanted just a touch of color so I inked it with some vintage photo and ground espresso, the next morning I realized it had reacted with the spackle and turned a lovely green and blush gradient color. I loved it! Another time I dusted it with matte brown eyeshadow and that worked really well for just a touch of color. :)
Hi Heather! I’ve been watching your fun videos and am so happy you shared this. The papers turned out so lovely!! You made it look so easy that I’m going to try it! TFS!
Lovely papers. I love using texture paste with stencils. I'm gonna look out for the drywall stuff tho, looks like it'll be way more cost effective than a little jar! 😀
Love your channel. Was a very good tip on how to clean your stencils/knife so you aren't throwing spackle/plaster down your plumbing pipes. And throwing globs of paint and other crafting mediums down the sink isn't so good for environment, either. Better to brush/roll them off onto "scratch" papers you keep on the crafting desk as you work, which you can later use as collage fodder.
Hi Heather, yes, I've used regular acrylic paint in texture paste. It turned out very pretty. Expect a little lighter color. Loved how your turned out today 💖
Hi Heather, I have tried mixing color with my spackle I have mostly used acrylic start with a little and add until you have the color you want. I have also used Magicals the color is vibrant and fabulous, brushos are similar to magicals so could try those too TFS Hugs and Smiles
great video..Temu has lots of stencils, dirt cheap too, also you can add some paint/pigment to the texture paste and use it like that makes beautiful shades...just a suggestion...thanks for posting
I usually use gesso. And ive stenciled white paper then painted on coffee after it dried. The paper is stained slightly darker than the gesso. Not sure if that would work on other mediums. You can also drizzle water color paints for a cool look.
Hi there, I have never made these before but I am definitely going to try it because it looks like fun and you've made it look fairly easy. I've already dropped one of the stencils that I don't have in my Amazon cart and checked to see if my local WM has some of the drywall spackle in a smaller size (yep)! Thank you for sharing this idea with all of us. :)
Hi, just discovered your channel. What a lovely video. I would love to start my own and make journaling videos. I have used the Tim Holtz distress inks over my projects like this. However, I truly prefer them white. Beautiful work!
Good morning from Rochester, NY Heather. I’m new to your channel, I find you charming and down to earth😊love your style and thank you for sharing your talent with all of us.
Hello Heather, your papers came out lovely, I love the effect you got with the spackle. I used Ranger texture paste before and loved it, I just use distress ink on daubers to add some color, now will have to try the spackle, thanks for sharing.
I have alway use drywall light weight 👍😀 I have made furniture for many years and used it always. When I started to make journals I had a lot and I some times use old wax, take some on my finger and dry a bit on the stamps after it is dry 👍😉 Thanks for sharing I absolutely love all you creates 😍 Tina - Denmark 🇩🇰
I am obsessed with stenciling with the dry wall paste, after watching your video! I have several bottles of acrylic paints that I use.I have a hard time finding stencils, and ran into the Temu site and ordered several.

The Waverly one is called damask floral I believe. I love doing this on my journal inserts, Metallic paint turns out so awesome too, also chalk paint comes out quite nice with wall spackle. Also did you know you could use your dies as a stencil but you have to make sure you get all the gunk loose from the die before using it to cut because it will tear your paper if you don't.
Hi Heather, I love your artwork. You can mix all color type into your paste. Powder, Inks, Acrylics. I know you love blue how I do. Try out Amsterdam acrylic paint mix for a real gorgeous Blue Bell color. 1 part dark green-blue (557), 1 part light blue (551), 1/2 part carmine red (318), 2-2 1/2 parts titanium white (105). 1/10 part color are more then enought for the paste. When then the paste are dry you can use picket fence distress ink to emphasize 😉 xx Manuela
These are gorgeous. And adding colour to the paste💯. Question: 1.do they dry completely without cracking or flaking? 2. Did you or would you seal them and if so what with? Please excuse questions..I'm watching with no sound!
Thanks, it was great to see your technique and they turned out beautifully. I’ve played around with adding acrylic paint to the paste and learnt by trial and error that less is more ☺️💕
When I think of all the fancy and expensive pastes I have bought, I could just cry. Of course, they are all dried up now. Think I will have to stain some papers with coffee to try this. I have lots of pigment powders that would mix well with the spackle. Thanks so much!
I use joint compound and it’s works so well. I think it’s the same thing. I haven’t tinted mine but definitely going to try it. I think some metallic paints would look really good. Thanks for sharing!
Just finding and enjoying your channel. You probably already know this but. I color after it dries with watercolor. You can lightly sand to bring some of the whit back out.
Great idea, texture paste and stencils always gives nice results. You talked about colouring. I have been colouring clear texture paste with just some distress ink (spray or inkpad with water spray) and that worked out well. Mind not to do that much color though.
Great texture paste hack...I would have never thought to use dry wall spackle. I love using texture paste and I really like how yours turned out. The texture appears easy to spread. Thanks for sharing this great alternative to texture paste. :)
Thanks for doing this Heather! I haven't done this yet and it was on my list to try. I heard about the spackle so it was nice to see it being usrd. 🌿🐝🌿🐝🌿🐝🌿
Major thanks for this video!! The price difference between art paste and spackling is a bit startling. One of your followers suggested adding some glycerin for a smoother texture...going to give that a try. Your narrative is loaded with valuable information!! I always learn new techniques by watching skilled hands work. I'm a card maker, so I'll be doing this on designer cardstock. I'm really excited about how beautiful this looks!
This is the video I needed to push me to try this technique. I played a bit yesterday, and made a tag. But for sure, I will be doing more in my journals. Thank you!
Thankyou Heather, these are beautiful, so pretty. I have made my own texture paste from a recipe online which works great. I had no idea I could use household filler but I just love the look of it on those book pages. I also like the idea of creating lots in advance to have ready on hand. Thankyou for all the helpful hints, very much appreciated x
@@dorothyandrews8872 Mix together quarter cup of talcum powder, 1 tablespoon of all-purpose school glue and 1 tablespoon of white craft paint. Add water a little at a time to get the consistency similar to that of toothpaste. Have fun !
Thanks for the tip about spackle! Never tried this. So excited to give it a go! I wonder how the dried spackle would take up colour? I think very soft water colour applied after it has dried would look beautiful!

Thank you so much for the tips!! I will try that!!
I love this and your “scrap papers” are beautiful. 🤍🤍🤍
Oh I love how that envelope turned out 😍 and that scrap piece of blue paper ☺️💙💙💙
I love this affect so much tfs, I have added Acrylic paint to texture paste in mixed media and it worked well tfs Heather...Kia Kaha...
These are gorgeous. And adding colour to the paste💯. Question: 1.do they dry completely without cracking or flaking?
2. Did you or would you seal them and if so what with?
Please excuse questions..I'm watching with no sound!
I absolutely love this!! Thank you!!
I have colored by using ink on top so I could have multiple colors. I used a q-tip to apply. The less expensive ones that are more stiff than fluffy.
Thanks, it was great to see your technique and they turned out beautifully. I’ve played around with adding acrylic paint to the paste and learnt by trial and error that less is more ☺️💕
I haven’t tried this technique yet💖💞they turns out amazing !
I used some acrylic paint and as well my Tim Holtz ink refill and drop a few drops of it in it and mix it up!
love love love this! thank you for the inspiration
When I think of all the fancy and expensive pastes I have bought, I could just cry. Of course, they are all dried up now. Think I will have to stain some papers with coffee to try this. I have lots of pigment powders that would mix well with the spackle. Thanks so much!
These turned out so pretty. Mica powder is a great way to add color- you could also do spray stain for a mixed media look too
I use joint compound and it’s works so well. I think it’s the same thing. I haven’t tinted mine but definitely going to try it. I think some metallic paints would look really good. Thanks for sharing!
Love your style!
Just finding and enjoying your channel. You probably already know this but. I color after it dries with watercolor. You can lightly sand to bring some of the whit back out.
So Pretty!!! Thank you
Your such an inspiration to me thank you I love all your videos! ❤
Great idea, texture paste and stencils always gives nice results. You talked about colouring. I have been colouring clear texture paste with just some distress ink (spray or inkpad with water spray) and that worked out well. Mind not to do that much color though.
Beautiful!💗💗💗 I have to try it!
I love that you hack as much as I do!! Hahaha! Some people call it crazy... I call it Brilliant! 💁♀️🤣 Love Love Love this idea!!
I usually colour my texture paste with acrylic paint - It's funny but I have been making quite a few of these lately (prior to your post) hahahaha!
O gosh i luv this, i have never tried it, so its going on my to do list😊
Great texture paste hack...I would have never thought to use dry wall spackle. I love using texture paste and I really like how yours turned out. The texture appears easy to spread. Thanks for sharing this great alternative to texture paste. :)
You can use a microsponge and add distress ink or you can add acrylic paint directly to the textured paste
These look beautiful! Great tip about the drywall spackle!
Hi Heather love this look . Very pretty . Thanks for the paste tip too. I am going to try and find a U.K equivalent . It looks really good . Kay x
Thank you for sharing this technique. Your tutorial was very informative and easy to follow.
Lovely results Heather.
This is the video I needed to push me to try this technique. I played a bit yesterday, and made a tag. But for sure, I will be doing more in my journals. Thank you!
I love this Heather! I'm wondering if you added a drop of Tim Holtz distress ink?
Love these. TFS
I would love to know the recipe if you would share thanks
@@dorothyandrews8872 Mix together quarter cup of talcum powder, 1 tablespoon of all-purpose school glue and 1 tablespoon of white craft paint. Add water a little at a time to get the consistency similar to that of toothpaste. Have fun !
Thanks for the tip about spackle! Never tried this. So excited to give it a go! I wonder how the dried spackle would take up colour? I think very soft water colour applied after it has dried would look beautiful!
Thanks for sharing 💜 Definitely want to try this!
Thank you! 🌹❤️
