It was illegal to sing Vandey matram during British time....The Novel Anand Math in which song is written by Bankim Chandra was seized by Govt. and no-one was allowed to read Anand Math and Sing Vandey Matram.... because that times Freedom Fighters were getting motivation from this song...

Soon it became the popular marching song for Political Activism...the effect of this song was so intense in creating the feel of Nationalism that British Govt. banned both the noble as well as Vandey Matram song..... However , freedom fighters continued with the thought of this song..
