As a Gluten-free person, those are really affordable. I’m going to make them. Ali, you keep reminding me of things I used to do but don’t now! Thank you and have a lovely Christmas.
I remember my grandma making potted meat with the last bits of the Sunday roast. She would chop it up fine and cover with melted butter in a small ramekin. This was before central heating, when people had a cold pantry!
Yesterday I made a malt loaf using the prue leith recipe from British bake off. Mind I replaced the prunes with medjool dates.. had some from breakfast and was super moist…mind it looks like I’ve got enough to feed a platoon! Making open top pork pies with a base layer of branston pickle and chunky sausage rolls with a hint of branston pickle minced up with the sausage meat…
Just the recipe I need as I have lots of oats to use up. Got large bag of carrots and parsnip for 10p a bag in Sainsbury’s then found 3kgs of spuds for 8p in Aldi so I will be trying the wedges. Have a lovely day Ali.
I’ve also bought gifts for the families doggies as well…having arthritis in multiple joints my mobility is naff! I can fall over a wee pebble. And when Gollum my Jack Russell passed I vowed it’d be unfair to have a doggoe that I can’t walk or exercise..so I get my doggie fix from family dogs, Facebook groups and Luna appearances!..
I LOVE your simple oatcakes and potted cheese. I see them in my post Christmas 'running out of planned food but still having leftovers to deal with' phase. Happy Christmas to you and Luna, and to all your family!
Hi , having made my first oatcakes yesterday I loved them so much I've made some more today and what I also did ( and I'm not sure it'll work but it should) was to make an extra batch and wrapped them up in greaseproof paper and put them in a container in the freezer so next time the oven is on hopefully they'll cook from frozen, which I'm sure they will given a few minutes extra in the oven. Next time I'm thinking of adding in a couple of spoons of stuffing mix to give them a herby flavour.
definitely going to make oatcakes (Norfolk style!) and never even heard of potted cheese, so will try that too. I was wondering if you would buy some of the cheap veg - it's too good to overlook! I definitely think you should consider publishing a cookbook, it is fantastic to find someone else who shops and cooks so much like myself (but then I am also an 'Ali'!) Merry Christmas to you and Luna. x
Great video again Ali, I've never heard of potted cheese but it looked delicious. I'm definitely going to try making the oatcakes I didn't realise how easy they were to make. Have a lovely Christmas and I can't wait to see what you make it tye new year. I'm having a no spend January.
Please please take advantage from supermarkets christmas offer on vegetables. I have potatoes for a month, carrots for juice for new year celebration and cabbage for bigos.
Thankyou Ali just started following you and love your amazing recipes and great advice on savvy spending & budgeting ...the homemade oatcakes and potted cheese are def on my to do list both look delicious ❤ we live rurally on a farm in Scottish Borders ..miles from supermarkets ... so lots of planning involved in sourcing etc ...Have a lovely Christmas with your family and a healthy ,happy Newyear ❤
I have to say you have lovely young hands, speaking as someone who does not! Mine are all gnarly with age spots. You could be a hand model! Love your foodie Friday’s.
Thanks! I've always worn rubber gloves to do the washing up and have gardening gloves to protect them when I'm gardening. It was my Gran who told me in my teens to wear gloves when doing messy stuff :-)
Just made mine. Didn't have oil so used rubbed in butter. Probably got them too thick. I used 170 degrees c and they came out very doughy . Going to try again.
Thank you for the recipe. And instructions. I’m not a good cook but want to learn and I definitely wan to try this because I love oat cakes and I’m trying to spend less and not shop more than when absolutely necessary this month (thank you for the inspiration for that too) but I do have all the ingredients for this. I actually bought lard for the first time in my life (inspired by Rachenda) so if I wanted to use that instead of the olive oil, ho much would I need to use? Thank you so much. 🙏Love you and Luna. 💓
Thank you so much Ali. I’ve never used lard but I grew up in a farm and remember my grandma making it from her pigs.. I never thought that decades later I’d be baking with it! I think we’re going back to our roots! ❤
@@aliliveswellonlessI definitely think that it is a possibility. Although I’m stuck in a dilemma about it.. I don’t know much how it’s prepared and sold nowadays. I read somewhere that now they hydrogenate it like they do with margarine and shortening and that’s bad for health.. but then somewhere else I read that it’s not the case and it’s more natural.. it’s so confusing! I really like your videos. I found your channel when I need it so much right now as I am suffering with poor health which is affecting my income and financial situation quite badly right now. Thank you so much for all your tips and advice. The way that you explain things never makes me feel bad like some patronising and condescending people in my life… and I love your voice and your accent, I could listen to you talking for hours just to relax! 🙏💓

I made the oatcakes this afternoon and they are absolutely delicious. I'm going to add cheese next time. Thanks so much, Ali. xx
I've just popped some in the oven, with poppy seeds, ready for guests over the Christmas break. They are smelling so good, as they bake

Oh must try to make . Look yum. Can l use quick cooking oats. Thanks 😊
Yep, should be ok as long it's just oats

Never tried butter but I'd probably melt it first then def roll them thinner. Maybe try a lower temp and bake longer. Let me know if you crack it :-)
Woo woo to you Luna…

I would melt some lard then use 3tbsp. If you melt too much, it'll just re harden and you can put it back in the fridge. Happy baking! :-)

@@ericaluna00 I think with the prices and availability of oil, many of us will be going back to our roots and using lard again!!
