i NEVER chuck left over dough into the bin. I made a wee one, just for me, privilege of the cook. I'm Scottish but live in France so you can't find store bought oatcakes, but as you say, they're so easy to make. I eat mine preferably with cheese and add a nice topping of Branston pickle - homemade by the way - heaven!! So oatcakes are made, after a cuppa, getting down to making shortbread, another Scottish treat that'll be on the table at Christmas. Merry Christmas everyone and a Happy New year to all. A big thanks to Cheryl for giving us such great recipes.
Great video, apart from throwing away good dough! Just roll into a ball then roll it and bake. You get an extra, albeit, maybe mis-shapen, oatcake! Just eat that one with your eyes closed! 🧀😋

I'm in Chicago. Long story short from the Henderson's of Glasgow, St Clair is everyone's middle name. Made the rounds there in 1969. Wonderful memories. You are wonderfully delightful to listen to and the oatcakes taste like the things that make memories. Thank you.
Aloha from Naalehu in Hawaii! I was not able to visit ur part of the world during my travels but hav deep Scottish roots! My paternal grandparents came thru Ellis Island many, many years ago. .....i was supremely lucky to find ur site! Thank you for sharing your family receipes. ...they r EXACTLY what I was looking for. I am 70 now & plan to cook/bake until the end. ...looking forward to many more delectable eatables from ur kitchen. ...stay safe and happy & keep on creating from ur home to ours....peace, Linda
So wonderful! I can't have plain flour so I used finely ground almond flour. Kept everything the same and used a smaller cutter (didn't have a 6mm one), turned out devine! Topped them with cheddar, poached egg, tomato, avocado and onion, salt and pepper with a thin slice of ham. My husband was so excited! We both just loved it. Thank you!
Made these for the first time an hour ago….second batch now in the oven. Super-quick and super-tasty. No fuss, no faffing about mixing oats. Brilliant - thanks for another great upload 👏
I never usually leave comments but after trying several different recipes for oat cakes, this recipe is by far and way the best I have come across. I have been trying unsuccessfully to replicate my favourite commercial brand for smooth oatcakes and this recipe not only comes very close but the oatcakes taste so much better. I suppose purists wouldn’t add flour to the mix but I think it adds so much to the texture. I didn’t have enough butter so used the equivalent in rapeseed oil. The flavour was excellent. Thank you from a grateful Scot.
A friend gave me some oatcakes last week which were delicious, so I decided to look for a recipe. I tried two recipes and didn't like them. I fell upon this video and made them with almond flour. They turned out delicious. My gg-grandfather came from Scotland to PEI, Canada many, many years ago, and my mother's family live in Bristol, UK. Oh, I almost forgot. I made 9 bigger ones and one little one from the last of the dough. Thanks for the great recipe.
Thank you for posting this. I tried your recipe last week and have been enjoying eating the oatcakes, especially with butter and honey as a snack. They are great with soup like you said. They have a good texture although a bit dry. They don’t have much flavor eaten plain. I tend to experiment and modify almost every recipe. In the batch I made today I substituted a gluten free flour blend that I grind myself. I mix different grains together to make things more nutritious. Today I used a blend of Garbanzo bean, millet, flaxseed, sunflower seed and buckwheat flours. Due to adding too much water, I ended up adding a bit of regular flour to get them to the right consistency to roll out. This batch turned out very flavorful. Delicious 😋
I've just produced two baking trays full of your delicious oatcakes - since I worked as a German au pair near Aberdeen when I was young I love oatcakes and I am very glad I found your video. Love your wonderful Scottish accent. Thank you so much!!
Just found your website a couple of weeks ago Cheryl. You make me feel so homesick. Been working in Nigeria for 11 years and, thanks to your videos, I can eat more Scottish made food within reason. Incidentally, my mother's faimley came fae Maybole......no a kick in the erse fae Dunure.
"Keep rolling 'till you're happy" excellent life philosophy - keep it simple! I once confessed to my brother that I'd been eating oatcakes with peanut butter. He said "You must have too much spit!"
Whenever I drove to Scotland on business, I always tried to bring some oatcakes and other stuff back to England. One time I had haggis and various pies etc. in the back of the car and was stopped by the police just north of the border, allegedly they were looking for someone but I think they were bored! When I opened the boot and he saw the bags of goodies going south and I told him why, he made some joke about an export licence! Turns out he was a bit of a foodie and at least he had a sense of humour! The both got back in their car laughing! I love your channel and will steadily work through all of your recipes. Good wholesome stuff!
Hello from Seattle in the USA. I was so happy to discover your channel a few days ago. My nana, who emigrated from Aberdeen to Vancouver Canada immediately following WWI, always had fresh oatcakes on hand and I loved them. She made many delicious, simple meals and treats. Buying Scottish oatmeal here in the States used to be difficult, but it’s much simpler now, what with the Internet! Thank you for sharing your recipes, stories, kitty, and humor. Happy new year!
Hi Linda, I live in the US and my Nana was born in Aberdeen as well! She emigrated to the US in 1923. Did all the Nana's leave Aberdeen around the same time ? :)
Wow, small world. My grandfather also emigrated from Aberdeen to Vancouver, Canada in 1918. I still have the penny that he was carrying in his pocket when he arrived. It's good to keep the old recipes alive.
I just found you and I'm so happy I did! Since I live very far away, in the USA, Connecticut to be exact and I love to see what other people are cooking and eating around the world, I am excited that I will now be able to create your recipes to add excitement to the meals i make here! Thank you so much and btw your voice is lovely!
Happy New Year from the Highlands of Bavaria (Alps). Thank you so much for your lively recipes. I so love watching, learning and of course listening to your Scots. A friend fae Aberdeenshire sent me Orkney oatcakes in a Christmas parcel. Made my day. I've been in a sickbed for 19 months, now and there's not much of a chance to make it to Scotland anytime. I'm trying to bring Scotland here to this 9 squaremeter sickroom. Tartan everywhere, photos, Manran and Skipinnish or the Corries singing to me and with me. I spend a lot of time trying to learn some Gaelic online. All this keeps my spirits up but sitiing in my tartan bedding sipping on a dram and munching away on Orkney oatcakes made this Christmas so much better for me. I want you to know, when you are making your videos, you are making many of us subscribers smile and feel good. It's not "just" about cooking. You bring a wee bit of Scotland to people around the world and we appreciate your work and your personality very much. Best wishes to you and your loved ones Bliadhna Mhath Ùr 🙋🏻♀️ Lisa
Thank you so much for your chanel. I left Ayrshire as a early teenager and listening to you makes me feel back home again. Especially your add ons - today I was reminded of my grandpa's story of how the giant rock bun got into the sea 😁. Then there's my fav childhood lunch of pie, beans and tomato sauce (Scots will know) thankyou again, for the recipes and the wee touch of home🥲
A good simple recipe that produces very nice oat cakes. You are correct about using unsalted butter. I made a batch using salted butter and they do taste rather salty.
If you have only salted butter, omit or reduce the added salt from the recipe. The recipe can be "pimped" with some ground black pepper or even a little cheese. 😋
I'm going to try this. I've been looking for a nice recipe to use oats. Edit: I just made them and they turned out great. I used coarse oatmeal and oat flour instead of the all purpose and that works fine too. But I'm a lazy person, so I rolled out the dough in a rectangle inside a folded piece of baking parchment and then cut the dough in 10 equal sized pieces. Worked wonderfully as well. They give a nice bit of energy. Good for in-between meals as well when you need something. Good healthy alternative!
THANK YOU so very much for such a fantastic recipe. I have been wanting to make them for years but have never managed to get the perfect recipe...until yours...which is SPOT ON! I want to know how it is traditionally made and for it to work and yours does both. Thank you for your generosity of spirit!
I am from Nova Scotia province, Canada and we love oat cakes. We tend to have ours with sweeter toppings and you can find them in small cafés. Sometimes we dip one half in melted chocolate, a classic you will find in cafés and it goes well with the bitter coffee or tea in the morning. I will definitely enjoy this recipe.
I made these Oatcakes for the second time last Saturday - and had them, as you suggested, with some tomato soup and grated Cathedral City Cheese - they went down a treat with the Soup! I will definitely be baking these again :)
Thank you! 🏴❤️ My mum's family came to Canada from Shetland and we always had oat cakes at home! I made these tonight (with Irish butter, hehehehe) and it was so easy! They are perfect! Better than what I can buy in Canada or NYC! Thank you! 🏴❤️
I can’t even tell you how much this all warms my heart. My ancestors came from Scotland. Mother’s maiden name is Farquharson. I’m just absorbing everything you say and it brings a tear to my eye that this is what my ancestors had. ❤️❤️thank you so much
What's For Tea? Thank you. Happy to be here! As soon as the weather gets cooler (can’t use the oven in this oppressive heat we have) I’m going to be making these!!! ❤️❤️ love anything with oats!
I am of Scottish descent, so I have often wondered what my ancestors ate. I am also a pretty good cook and baker. I can’t find a lot of specialty flour at my local grocery stores. I also beat up my breads in my stand mixer. You recipebreminds me of how I make buttermilk biscuits. When I made biscuits the scraps left over were made into a biscuit for our dog. She loved her biscuit, even though it was often misshaped and missing a round shape..
I have to agree with Mac these oat cakes are the best ever and too good to throw away I baked and ate with butter so tasty we can’t get enough I also love your video your voice is soothing and you make me laugh while baking please keep them coming 😋
Hi from The Yukon Territory Canada! My momma made us pancakes as kids growing up. She often used bacon fat in place of butter, mostly because it was always kept from bacon in the fridge and butter was so expensive where we lived. Thank you for your recipe, I am going to indulge and surprise my momma with a batch..I'm so excited! Hugs from the north!!!
OK, 10 is enough for me? Our MacIver Mom used to make these for us on the stove top. I love the recipes, but love listening to your accent even more. Thanks
Thank you for showing us authentic Scottish Oatcakes. I think I'll try this by grinding some old fashioned rolled oats in my food processor because I don't have access to Scottish or pinhead oats in the states--especially not now with the virus and all right now. But I feel I have a good grasp of what they should look like. Thank you again!
Sqircle is from now on my favourite word of 2020 🤩 But about the cooking, how should the texture be? Are they crumbly? Soft in the middle? What should I look for when baking them since I've never had one before 🤔
My first time on your site, but not my last! Promise you I will bake your oatcakes. I've been blessed with visiting Scotland 3 times, the last being in 2001 (during that awful Hoof and Mouth epidemic) and have never forgotten how good the Scottish food is. The oatcakes especially, remember them with such fondness. Thank you for this video, and I will see you again
Thank you for this simple yet wonderful recipe. My boy baked this last night for Harmony Day in Australia to celebrate Scottish heritage part of him. They were so delicious and were very popular among people and his school and my workplace! Your videos are easy to follow with very nice tone of voice.
Binge watching and taking comfort with all the Scottishness that I miss. The wee village I lived in made oat cakes right there. So good! I'll be making some for Xmas, thank you for the recipe and reminder of this lovely snack.
❤Brilliant recipe and method. Thank YOU. Delicious 😋. Admit I added an extra 10g of butter, my oats are corse, so to make them thin, it rolled out more easily. One son doesn't like baking powder ?? Was ok without it. Thank YOU again, made for a very happy Sunday breakfast ☺️
Thank you so much! Watched your video and made them right away. Toothsome, delicious and somewhat addictive. They didn't last long, now will have to make some more! As close to a perfect snack as I've ever had... :)
Ah no, with that wee little bit ye could have gotten one more. Europeans don’t waste food. Lol. You must be a perfectionist and didn’t want to have an odd one out. 😜 I love this recipe and your channel. Thanks!
The left over bit you could of made a 'wonky oat cake' 😋 Love this, will try it out. Fell in love with soup and oat cakes when working and living in Glasgow. Thanks 😊
These are absolutely delicious I make them for first time the other day and now they going to be a regular thing being baked here Thank you very much xxx
I got into oat cakes via Nairn's which used to be in the supermarket here in Australia. They had a very nice fruit version with little currants. I was shocked a canny Scot threw away the extra dough! heh. My Mum was Irish and I think I got it from her not to waste. Love your accent and voice, and Scottish words like shoogle. Good job.
Greetings from Australia. I miss travelling to Scotland but you have brought Scotland to me and I love it. I really must give these a go - thank you so much :)
Hi from Devon, however I’m from Arbroath. I make your oatcakes this afternoon as is pretty “Drich” here today, they were FANTASTIC! I’ve been having oatcakes sent down from Inverness and within 40minutes I had home baked ones. Thank you very much for the recipe and the video. I did big round ones and cut them in quarters like the ones I have from the North and I got 8 out of the mix, plus one round one from what was leftover. I love your channel, keep them coming👍👍Cheers from Mike 🍷🍷
My wife and I learned all about oat cakes for the first time from your video. Thank you so much for sharing, we cannot wait to make them, and also to visit Scotland some day! Be well!
Oh I love your video . I just came back from Scotland what a beautiful place . I am completely in love with it . Feeling a bit nostalgic so I decided to cook Scottish . I will make those oat cakes for sure . 🙏🍀😘🙏
I too like Dunure Castle, it's on a lovely stretch of coast, just near Maybole where my mother's family come from; my grandfather was born there in about 1860. But the Oatcakes, just seen the recipe and my wife is making them already. we love them with soft cheese like Brie and especially with goat's cheese. We sometimes buy Walker's when they are available in Australia, but we have to take out a second mortgage to pay for them. I like them with a good Islay malt as well. Will try them with tomato soup as soon as the weather cools down a bit, we are still in the middle of a stinking hot, summer surrounded by bushfires and now having massive rainstorms that make Dennis look like a summer shower.
Loved the triangle shaped cream bannocks. Haven't seen them for years but they were delicious. Think Nairn's made them. They were slightly sweeter and finer textured than oatcakes. Delicious.
made them today and they were delicious! I added some dry toasted sesame seeds and chili flakes for a little kick! Thank you so much for the recipe. I love your videos!
Thank you so much for this recipe. I've tried to make oatcakes before but failed. This morning I used your recipe, and the results were really lovely. I plan to make them again and again in the future.
Will be baking these often! Thank you! Love your picture and your sweet kitty. You look SOOOOO young! I was expecting a Scottish grandma! Have subscribed to your channel, can't wait to try more of your recipes!
I’m so glad to find this recipe. I can’t find them here in Texas any more so I have to order from Amazon which takes several months to receive. I will definitely make some.
Made these tonight. They're delicious!!! Mine were salty...apparently I used salted butter. Still very good! Thanks. So glad to have found you're channel. I've made several of your recipes!
Mine were overly salty too and I did not use salted butter. I am wondering if UK teaspoons are different than US? Delicious otherwise, so I will just halve the salt next time :)

The waste. Just put it in the oven
Great crumbled over soups or cereal
I want to spend a month with you absorbing all your lovely Scottish knowledge
I’m not fond of oatcakes but my husband is, so because I love my husband, I will make these for him
Awww... 🤗❤️
Fantastic! I’m going to try these over here in Norfolk County, Ontario. :)
Did you make them? How were they?
True love!😊

I've purchased them when over. The ones from Tesco have oats, palm oil, and salt. So this is the real deal

I also used oat flour but mine were a little bitter because of that I think. Were yours bitter?

No, they weren't. But I know what you mean, oats can taste a little bit bitter once in awhile. I don't know what causes it.

But about the cooking, how should the texture be? Are they crumbly? Soft in the middle? What should I look for when baking them since I've never had one before 🤔
Hi Therese :) They're not overly crumbly...but they are quite dry! You definitely need butter on them. Thanks for watching
I made these with whole wheat flour and they were good. Thank you for the recipe. I will definitely make these again. I ate them all in 3 days.....
Great video. A lady who obviously cooks with love. Thank you.
I do :) lovely to see you and thanks for stopping by
The way you say flour! So cute! I am of Scottish/ Irish decent and love your videos to connect me!
Thanks!
The left over bit you could of made a 'wonky oat cake' 😋
Love this, will try it out.
Fell in love with soup and oat cakes when working and living in Glasgow.
Thanks 😊
Love oat cakes I always wanted to make them and they seem pretty easy to make. Thanks for the recipe
Theyre SO easy to make Margarita :) and they taste better than anything that you'd buy in the shop. Cheese can also be added which is lovely too :)
These are absolutely delicious I make them for first time the other day and now they going to be a regular thing being baked here Thank you very much xxx
Oatcakes are heavenly!
Thank you for sharing
I must try these out and
I love your Scottish accent
Love From south africa
I got into oat cakes via Nairn's which used to be in the supermarket here in Australia. They had a very nice fruit version with little currants.
I was shocked a canny Scot threw away the extra dough! heh. My Mum was Irish and I think I got it from her not to waste.
Love your accent and voice, and Scottish words like shoogle.
Good job.
I made these today and they were splended. Love your videos and accent. So calming. Regards from Devon UK. 👍👍
Greetings from Australia. I miss travelling to Scotland but you have brought Scotland to me and I love it. I really must give these a go - thank you so much :)
Thanks. I will try these. Love Scottish oatcakes
They look perfect
Yum! When I was a kid we got these from the local bakery (in Canada) and just ate them without any toppings! 😃
Thanks for the vid!
Looooove oatcakes .,thank you!!! In the shops rick steins are like home made-real butter no oils
What a beautiful scene! How fortunate you are to live so close to so much beauty!
I do living history and have made similar sans baking powder as it wasn’t invented in the times I do, will have to give these a try
❤❤❤❤love this recipe and demonstration! Thank you so much ☺️
My wife and I learned all about oat cakes for the first time from your video. Thank you so much for sharing, we cannot wait to make them, and also to visit Scotland some day! Be well!
Looking forward to trying this out! Thank-you.
They look lovely
Looks delicious. Squiwkle, cool word. Great recipe. Another new word. To shake. Have a great weekend. What a beautiful view at your harbor.
:) LOL Catherine! Thanks for stopping by, lovely to see you x
Can't wait to try this. Thank you.
Loved the triangle shaped cream bannocks. Haven't seen them for years but they were delicious. Think Nairn's made them. They were slightly sweeter and finer textured than oatcakes. Delicious.
Awesome! And healthy! Thank you.!
made them today and they were delicious! I added some dry toasted sesame seeds and chili flakes for a little kick! Thank you so much for the recipe. I love your videos!
That's a wonderful suggestion! I'm keeping that in mind next time I make them.
Thank you so much for this recipe. I've tried to make oatcakes before but failed. This morning I used your recipe, and the results were really lovely. I plan to make them again and again in the future.
A "squircle"...I chuckled at that one!😄
Will be baking these often! Thank you! Love your picture and your sweet kitty. You look SOOOOO young! I was expecting a Scottish grandma! Have subscribed to your channel, can't wait to try more of your recipes!
Had a craving for these so wish me luck! And thanks for the conversions for measuring ingredients. Means a lot to us older gals! lol
I’m so glad to find this recipe. I can’t find them here in Texas any more so I have to order from Amazon which takes several months to receive. I will definitely make some.
Search for "Nairn's". Mine usually come quickly
