dude everyone else’s vids are so confusing, but you yours made perfect sense. it’s even 8 years old!!! great and useful video for beginners
I'm really glad these are still helpful. Appreciate the comment and thanks for watching
It has been a joy watching your video. Most DJ's will not share their knowledge. You are a breath of fresh air.
Man, you’re a freakin legend. Your videos are a godsend I’ve learned an unbelievable amount and no one else on UA-cam goes over the more budget friendly equipment that many of us use. Keep it up bro earned a subscriber from me.
Really appreciate hearing that. Thanks so much for watching!
You are the kind of teacher everyone should have! There is something about the way you talk that keeps us glued to these videos. Thanks alot sir!
Thanks so much for those kind words! I really appreciate the comment and you watching my videos...
I just found this. I've recently caught the laser bug and was trying to learn dmx for the first time with a laser similar to this that arrived last night! Thank you so much for taking the time to share this information in such a clear way. I'm looking forward to watching the rest of your tutorials. Really appreciate folks like you that still make high quality content on UA-cam!
Really appreciate those kind words and good luck programming your new laser!
It’s cool to use DMX, but what about creating the actual animations on a computer? Mine has dancing people and animals, and I’m curious who makes those and how!
I bought one of these a few years back, not realizing that you can't separate the colours. No matter, it's served it purpose. Thanks for the tutorial, it's mainly confirmed that I was using it correctly which is always a bonus. Keep 'em coming Steve.
You're videos are awesome! Even a dummy like me can follow you. Please keep them coming. You are helping to demystify lighting
Thank you so much for posting these. The best on youtube. Keep it going, I know this is old but keep posting!!
I appreciate the words of encouragement! (and several more videos in the works)
Steve you are a great teacher. Nice one. Have just watched all of your videos and am feeling VERY inspired now. Thanks. Tim.

YOU ARE THE BEST !!!! THANK YOU !!!!! Best educational video about these popular lasers on youtube ! Thank you so very much ! :)))
Wow, thanks! Really appreciate those kind word and glad you liked the video.
Thanks Steve for your help & great tutorial explaining the different effects & channels on the laser, pretty cool effect
Glad it could help and really appreciate the comment and you watching!
Ive had the RGBV for many years, love it. One of the lasers was dim, they sent me another red laser to replace it. Was easy. Many patterns and effects
Very interesting. I might try doing that myself. Appreciate the info.
@@LearnLizard just unscrew the old one and easiest way is splice in the new one
@@petergruskin2088 Thank you!
I have two of these lasers and honestly they’re pretty damn good for the price. They’re relatively bright and are basically full color lasers. also I know this is an older video but thank you because this is the exact laser I have
They are RGBY now so the red and the blue makes a nice purple color . And you can have all of the heads, the same color as well.
Yes, Here is an updated version of that Laser: amzn.to/3Sm5NSy
...and I agree they can look pretty amazing- especially for the price.
Here's a video showing some nice effects with a fog machine: ua-cam.com/video/nxc_ZuiaMSU/v-deo.html
Thank you for watching!
Thanks. Entry level here. It's not as overwhelming as I thought it would be.
Thanks for watching- new laser video coming soon
my god, finally someone doesn't talk to hear themselves.
Your videos are so detailed and understandable!!👍👍
Glad you like them!
Wow. What a great and useful vid. Thanks a million from someone just getting started with DMX control.
Glad it helped!
Another great tutorial - thanks Steve. You've covered a lot of ground in this series; would be awesome to see a sample demo combining lights and lasers. I can provide original music for the purpose of the demo should you require any.
+Martin George
Thank you for the encouraging comments! (and offer for music) Look for future tutorials on controlling lights directly with an iPad, as well as using DMX to control video sequences. Great idea to show lights and lasers programmed together!
Thank you so much.!amazing and simple explained videos.you are great teacher
Thank you for such kind words! I really appreciate you watching.
Legendary uploads for light-jockeys on a shoestring budget, and pretty much what I need to know without bs. Thank you man, you rock! Im hoping my new aquisition will be addressed in one of your future video as well (request eh) : the F2750 3D RGB laser. It costs about € 100,- on aliexpress and it's a true and nice RGB laser. It has max 20kpps galvo's, 25 degree angle, 1900 patterns, 34 chns DMX, and the total of 500mw lasers is bright enough for a small party. There are stronger versions for a bit more €€€ too. It's rediculously cheap. (PS anyone who's interested can pm me for an aliexpress link - that I don't earn money with btw). Thanks for the video's!
Hey thanks so much for the kind words! I checked out that laser on Ali Express ($139 US) and it looks awesome. I might have to get one. Would love it if you could post a video link showing it in action back in these comments.
You are a legend. Thank you for teaching us. I really, REALLY appreciate it!
Very informative,, answered tons of questions for me..

Thx for help! Awesome! Simple and easy to understand!
Can you please include a link to a laser in the description
Great video! Do you know is there a way to control these lasers via a PC? I've been out of the laser game for a long time, so sorry for the question if it's dumb:) I would love to control from a PC through some kind of DMX convertor or something? I used to have one of the original Pangolin setups, but that was probably 15 years ago. I could just hook up through ILDA, but seems the cheaper lasers don't have that interface. Thanks for any help!
thank you so much. U save my life
Thanks for watching!
Great videos! Question: Can you use individual Class 1 laser diodes on a single channel DMX controller for simple, slow, timed & duration on/off patterns?
Hi- If the laser can be controlled by DMX, you can use any DMX controller to control it, depending on the functionality that is built into the unit. Thanks for watching!
@@LearnLizard Hello, thanks for the reply! I am using lasers
Great video, thank you. Just a quick question: Would you recommend the obey 40 for the laserworld 1000 rgb? Cheers
Appreciate the kind words! The Laserworld CS-1000 has DMX control so the Obey 40 would definitely work, but to maximize its capabilities I would want to use its ILDA capabilities with a computer and an ILDA interface.
Good Day, how I do connect Moving head with parcan light and laser light on a Dmx 512 using a buffer or say a splitter. Thank You
Another great video. Thanks so much.
I’ve just bought that laser! And I’m looking to use wireless DMX with the controller
Have fun! That little laser makes a lot of cool patterns. Looks especially good when the hazer is going. Appreciate you watching...
Thanks again Steve, great tutorial!! Hey Steve, will the DMX controller allow you combine light scenes with laser scenes, or do you need a separate controller for each?
Great stuff. Stay up to date. Thank you.
Quick question. I hope you still read the comments of old videos.
I'm considering buying two lasers with the strongnes of 3b and 40mW for red colour/100mW for the green colour. Is the laser safe to use for shining into a crowd, or do you have to use a diffuser/shine it against something?
Even the smallest power laser could damage someones eyes if you look directly into the beam, so you should never point any laser into a crowd. The lasers you are talking about are considered class 3R power which are basically safe for viewing reflected patterns. Always err on the side of caution!
Thanx for this and other vidéo. Is there a list with the patterns for these kind of laser?
I would suggest reading about and considering taking a course on laser safety before purchasing a laser. It's very easy to permanently hurt yourself or others eyes and skin if used improperly.
thank you so much
really love your videos
hi can u tell me how to setup with dmx laser and moving head lights together tnx
You are the man..!!
Thank you for watching!!
Wow It's Helped Me A Lot.Tnx Bro.Keep Going
Great, geek video.
Lot of things yet not cheap to operate from an iPhone app yet.
I just got one of this laser from ebay, is there way to make it sound sensor work without having the DMX controller?
or what are the things I can do without DMX on that laser light?
Thank you.
Good series of videos thanks and God bless you my friend.
Great Video and tutorial
i was just wondering i want to put some laser lights on my patio for some parties my question is do i need a control to do all the different lights or will it just work from the sound of the music and cycle through different light effects thanks
I have a 32 channel laser, that I would like control with a 512 DMX Controller that has automatically assigned scanners, every 16 channels.
Am I correct that if I set the laser address to 1, I can utilize all 32 channels by jumping between scanner 1 and 2?
Yes, I believe that should work (although I've never tried it) It will make it very confusing programming scenes and chases (at least for a brain like mine haha) but it sounds like a good work around.
watched one video been hook since great videos....
nice video. does this controller work with the SUNY TDM-RGY250 laser? I just got one and want to get a controller since the laser has a DMX512 input port. Thanks.
Great video but how do you change the colour? I am curious!!
Hello. Great video from 2015! Do you have a Laser System that is inexpensive that you would now recommend in 2021? I am looking for something just to have fun with once ina while. Thanks! - Scott
Thanks for the kind words! Here are 2 budget lasers that are both pretty cool and worth considering: ua-cam.com/video/q5NmXEjOEU8/v-deo.html
I recently purchased a laser like this one, not realizing what I purchased. I don’t have a dmx board. I bought it for a house party. Any chance you can help? I don’t want the patterns only the beams and for it to automatically play with beams flying around everywhere. Like at a rave type lighting too the music.
Do I need a dmx control and some speakers? Can I hook it up to a PC and set it on auto? I don’t want to DJ the thing. Help😂?
Hi- Most lasers like this will work without a DMX controller. Typically you would go into the menu controls and sect "auto function" where they will cycle through their patterns. Many will also have a "sound" mode that will advance the patterns in sync to any music with a strong beat. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!
Sir ...does have any Difference between sharpy and led par light addressing...?
Thanks for the video. It tough me, at least, how to set up one of the addresses in my ld-488b laser. The instructions that came with it are very limited.
I bought these cheap lasers for news years eve and just want the music to automatically synchronize them. They can through the air but not very effectively. I have a DMX with MIDI input and will be playing music through a computer to the receiver to speakers. Is there a way to send the music to the DMX and then to the lasers so they will be able to react better to the music in auto-schronization?
In order to do that you would put the lasers in DMX mode and use a "sound active" function on your DMX controller. (the Obey 40 and many other controllers have this feature although the results may not meet your expectations) The best way is to use a software controller that can trigger scenes with audio or MIDI (which is a common feature) Appreciate you watching!
Is there any way to make a button to a flash button? For example strob full on, or fog machine full on etc? Thank you.
Nice video. Have a question(how would you hook up your laser, like in the video, and then with the rest of your lights?)
Is it possible to isolate just the red or green laser colors on most of these chinese lasers? I have one and have always considered purchasing an Obey controller but that seems like something that should be able to happen.
+LearnLizard Thanks for a short tutorial. Question for you - I just got 2 Laserworld ESRGB400 qs units that I want to use in about a month. They have patterns & such but I really just want to use the beam modes similar to the way dance music clubs currently incorporate lasers. Would you suggest a DMX for that or is there something else I should be using? Thanks in advance!
Hi Steve. THANKS for the controller help!! Wondering if you could help me some more with this: I do stage plays. I want to create a lighting program that changes for each acting scene. Each acting scene lasts from 4 to 10 minutes each. I want the lights to change according to the length of each acting scene. Can I do this with the OBEY 40? Or is there another controller for this type of feature? THANKS. Looking forward...
Steve - We have an ADJ DMX Operator 1 and we are trying to program a single direct blue light source, with no movement. Any suggestions?
How did you mount this laser? I was not able .to. the holes are slightly too close to each other.
I am having an issue with Chauvet Obey 70 with my laser, watching your video is great by the way, but it's not working for me. I have an xlaser x4c-mk2. I set the dip switch like you said to 1. It works with all the different patterns and so on. But the other channels 2, 3, 4, etc do nothing. What do you think is the problem. I adjust channel one to a different number setting like you show but it keeps going through all the sequences and doesn't stop. There is no control over this.
Congrats on the X4C, wish I had one! It should have 11 DMX channels controllable by the Obey 70. That machine can control up to a 32 channel fixture, so the starting address of the 2nd fixture should be 33. Have you tried setting the DIP switch on the laser to 33 and seeing if it works on fixture 2? Wish I could be more help.
Great Job...keep up it!!
NICE ...REALY HELPFUL...THANKS
Great vids man, TY.
Steve, is it possible to program an intimidator 255 spot with a obey 70? i'm in a band and would like to have the lights pan across our stage without shining into the crowd?. maybe some simple patterns instead of just being still? i can't seem to get auto mode to stay on the stage like i'd like to? i have DMX control in 13 channel mode but i am the bass player so i'm kind of busy and we can't find a light man to do the job. love all your videos by the way.
+rotorhead58d
Hi- You can control most functions of the Intimidator 255 with DMX values (including the pan and tilt) so you can definitely program an Obey 70 to control it. Make sure the starting address on the 255 is set the same as the Obey 70. Channels 1 and 2 control the pan and fine pan and 3 and 4 control the tilt and fine tilt. Hopefully that helps. Thanks for watching and good luck!
Thank you for this video. I am considering the purchase of a RGPY Shinp laser DL-55c . I also use the same Chauvet 40 controller. This video answered allot of questions for me. But, can you control each COLOR individually. I would want one color at a time if possible.

What kind of laser that I could use for Christmas light show
Hi- I think you would want to get a laser that displays Christmas animations. If you have the budget, this is an amazing laser with lots of different animation choices:

Can i connect my 3000W fog machine to 512dmx controller ? ..if yes ..thn how could i programme it ...because i had connected it and the fog machine doesn't showed any kind of response .. could u pls help me !!
I have one of those lasers too. I hate it. It is so limited. I wish I'd gotten a better one with more functionality. I wanted one that you could control each laser color separately
You actually CAN control the level of the lasers with this one, (there is only green and red) but agree its functions are pretty limited. For just a little more $ you can get one that does simple animations like this: ua-cam.com/video/q5NmXEjOEU8/v-deo.html
Thank you very much.
You are welcome!
Great videos
Is it possible to change the size of the circles?
Great video
You've probably answered this already, once you have programmed your lighting for the show you want, does it store in a memory so the next time you set it up you just switch it on and your good to go, or do you need to reprogramme from scratch again? Thanks in advance.
Yes- all the settings stay in memory (thankfully) Let me know if you find any ghosts.
Excelente explicación
Gracias
hi
whats the dip switches set on the laser
thx
Hi Sir.1 LIGHT HAS ONLY 16 CHANNEL TO CONTROL (16 SLIDER) BUT SOME LIGHT HAS 20 TO 26 CHANNEL SO WHAT CAN WE DO PLEASE HELP .TANKS
That’s a great question - One thing you could do is use “Fixture 1” on the controller for the first 16 channels of your light, then use “Fixture 2” for channels 17-24. When you program a scene you would need to use both Fixture 1 and 2 but once the scene is stored it will control all 24 channels. It would start to get tricky when you program Chases, but it should work (although I’ve never personally tried it)
Love the videos. Just starting a church and we are using the Obey 40. I'm curious about scenes. Is it possible to create a scene that has 2 lights that remain constant and 4 lights that chase?
+Cecil Comstock
Hi- If you program every scene in your chase with two lights the same, you will achieve the look you are describing. Thanks for watching and also for the nice compliment!
merci, toujours explications faciles a comprendre félicitations
just recently bought an ld 488c.. I am not very knowledgeable about using this.. thanks for the video. but is a controller needed to use laser?? or can it be used by music only?
+Carlos C
Although I don't know the id 488c well I believe it has a sound activation mode very similar to the DL-55. In order to use it to its full potential, you would want to use a DMX controller.
Thanks for watching!
Found out the issue.. had to power up the last 2 pins to right so that it works with sound ..... thank you great vid
You Rock Bro!!! Thanks so much!
Perfect Steve, regards.
thanks!! great info!!
I want to be stage lighter what should I do?
Is it compatible with Laserworld lasers?
Can you enlarge the circle patterns?
Yes- DMX value 10-14 increases the size of the circles in both Static and Dynamic pattern mode. Thanks for watching!
Does it work on it's own? Can i just plug it in to the wall?
Yes- it has sound active and auto mode functions so you never have to use DMX control unless you want to.
@@LearnLizard that's great news! Thanks 😁
Lol wow, I see how the logic works now.. 255 huh.. Aweful lot like an IP address.. just happens to be 8 channels .. 8 bits in a byte.. Thats cool. Thanks for the informative video.
Thanks for watching this one!
Can you do moving heads
You're videos are good keep it coming please. I have a question, can every previous programmed Scene or chase be cancelled or deleted? if yes then how?
Steve I have a couple of DMX questions about a deck could you help me at all?
I can always try- whats your question?
LearnLizard could I add you on Facebook ?
How do i link my obey6 to a beamz iris?
Does anyone know if these lasers are safe to use?
I really like this stuff but I don't want to damage my eyesight
This is a Class 3B laser which can cause flash blindness if you look directly into the beam. If you were crazy enough to keep staring into it, it could cause permanent retinal damage so you definitely need to use caution when setting up and operating.
@@LearnLizard Thanks for the response, I will be very cautious!
@@LearnLizard Its too bad that tunnels and scanners are so nice but also have a higher risk of hitting your eyes
Do you have a video link using an obey 4 ?
Hi- I don't have an Obey 4 to do a demo with, but most of the functions on all of the Chauvet Obey controllers are similar to the Obey 40 so hoping some of my videos like this one might be of some help to you.
