Thank you for this video. I have been watching many different videos on the subject of DMX lighting with glazed eyes, and while watching yours I just had my aha moment. Great video.
Great job Scott! I've been a professional musician since 1982, but only now getting into lights. (I've always had people for that. LOL) This video is well done and you explain how to set up DMX in a simple to understand way. Thank you so much!
A really useful video (as are most of your videos). I've been scratching my head over DMX programming for a couple of years but now I think I'll be able to crack it.
Well you certainly cleared up a few things for me. I spent hours this past week beating my head against the wall. I was trying to use the Chauvet C-4 Foot controller with 6 Par64 LED’s. We finally just got them all to go on 1 color and then gave up. Pretty boring light show! I bought the C-4 foot controller so I could run the lighting from the stage while playing guitar. All of the directions that come with everything these days is pretty much crap. Thanks for this video!!
Newbie here. Excellent help. Got me started with my lights, and will check out other vids. Feedback. When describing DMX having 512 channels, it might help to describe what a channel is.. or maybe that is for a more advanced tutorial. Love your work.
im new to lighting but what i know from the audio side is using xlr instead of a dmx cable can lead to data loss, and depending on the light, can cause it to act unpredictable.. not always, but sometimes. dmx is 110 Ω and xlr is 45-75 Ω so theres a difference in resistance between the two cables that may or may not mess with your show
Because the software doesn't know what kind of light is actually connected and when he used it last time that channel was a dimmer and he didn't bother to change the label for this video.
Lol I like how you let everyone know that hitting the like is a free way to support your video... That was 🔥. I'm definitely smashing the like button keep spreading the knowledge man👏👏👏
Great video. Very informational. You got a great presence and ease of understanding you and basically the simplicity of explaining it all . Thank you for that. I will watch this video several times and work on my programming of lights.. I have two 4 can chauvet led lights ..and was wondering is there any particular DMX CONTROL PANELthat you would recommend to using and controlling both sets of lights ? Thank you in advance for any insight on that .☘️👍
Thanks! Glad it was helpful. And I don’t really have any gear recommendations for controlling them. I usually do it digitally. But I have an ADJ controller I use in this video that I do like: ua-cam.com/video/3Xm7Rep90Is/v-deo.htmlsi=qSd2A_VjERO66-qG
very informative, but how did you interface the lights with the program/how do I? I have the budget to get some lighting but I'm not sure the best way to control them
Thanks for the info! I was needing to save my DMX address in my lights to be on channel 1 for every light, so that when I turn the lights on I don’t have to manually change the channels every time…how do you do that?
Hey Scott. Thank you for the step by step on programming. This helps tremendously being that I just purchased a $1,000.00 worth of Venue products from Guitar Center in Las Vegas Nevada and not a single employee knows how to set up this product. Their advice was to go on You Tube and learn how to set it up. That was a real shocker to hear. And here I am. Still not too clear on the programming with the Venue Tetra Bar Linear Strip Wash Light with four color zones. My question is Do I set up each bar separately as you did in the video? I have four bars. Or do I do that through the Venue Tetra Controller? Or does the controller simply just run what I preset into each bar? Thank you for your help. Art from Vegas
You’ll have to look into the manual on how your lights respond to DMX signal. If you want multiple lights to react the SAME, then set them to the same starting address. If you want them to act differently, set them to a different starting address 👍
Hey Scott, great video as always! Quick question: Would you recommend doing something like this if you didn't own the lights? Like for example if I wanted to program a venue's lights (in my hometown) to run on midi from my laptop. Assume that I could access all the lights and set them up to the channels I want... What would happen if I then wanted to give the access back to the venues lighting controller for the other bands to have a "standard" lightshow that same night (after our set) ? Would I have to reset all the channels on the lights, or? Like I said, the question is "WOULD it even be a good idea"? I would really like to try and make a show with midi programmed lights in my hometown without buying lights for my band. Thanks in advance!
Definitely better to have the lights, but I DID do that for a friends band though once. I didn’t have access to one of the lights so I had to just go from memory and visualize it as I programmed it. And it worked! And yes, lights would have to be rest from show to show to match your DMX addresses you programmed to 👍
i'm beginner. i used DMX512/912. what it used for and how to move into page B (page A=8, page B=8). i'm mixed with par led and moving head and the result is miserable. thanks
Hi Scott. Newbie here. Do the wireless dmx adaptors work with any/every dmx controller or is there a specific feature the controller must have for the adaptor to work with it.
Thanks for the video. I'm a total beginner but this made sense. Another question though. I have a lightbar with 4 lights on it. The bar has one display so I cannot set individual addresses for the lights, only 1 address. Can I still program the individual lights with different colours? How does that work?
@@ScottUhlMusic Yeah it looks pretty user friendly, but I agree I just can't do subscription based stuff, unless it's UA-cam haha. I am looking into Lighting Buddy or Stage Buddy whatever it's called now. It's made by enntec/dmxis
The DMX vs XLR cable issue is the same problem with using 1/4 jacks made for guitars on a speaker. Sure it's not going to malfunction right off the bat but most people get into problems when they buy the cheapest cords they can. And cheap xlr can be OK for voices but the dmx signal needs a little more consistent signal which is why sometimes you start getting blinking lights

I think your friend Mike thought I was laughing at him on your comment where you said "uh oh... Mike it here... prepare to answer questions." He just said "I won't be laughed at. unsubscribed." and deleted his comment. :/ If you see him again, can you let him know I was laughing at your comment? Not at him. Thanks
@@ScottUhlMusic yea I just saw that. I was joking as well. We've spoken for almost a year now thought he knew my sense of humour.
Yeah, UA-cam’s comment section is structured weird sometimes, so it can be confusing. I left a comment saying I was responding to you, not him.
Oh ok so if I need 4 lights all doing the same thing just set them on the same channel
Yup 👍
Thanks!
