    finding shorts like that is always a load of fun. since it runs fine once started, I would assume a problem in the starting system itself, like a bad starter or switch.

    First off, what kind of mechanic doesn’t know the difference between a short circuit and a parasitic drain?
    So I have an electrical short. The test light method you use in this video is useless, because the shorted circuit has been disconnected at the fuse panel by a blown fuse, which is the typical sign of a short circuit. I use my multimeter and see that the circuit is grounded right out, which is why the fuse blows. Now my problem is, where in that circuit is the short? Perhaps I should replace the fuse with a wire, then see where the wiring catches fire. Or maybe you have some actual information on locating and repairing short circuits.

    • @ragnardanneskjold7675
      @ragnardanneskjold7675 5 років тому

      Well I’m no expert but I’d hazard to guess you’d find a wiring schematic for the circuits that connect to the blown fuse and trace the wires until you find the problem.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому

    @sonyps307 if the regulator is built into the alternator and not separate, you have bad wiring going to the alternator assembly, OR you're just getting crapper alts. If the regulator is separate, replace it. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому

    @ikeverner could be lots of things,places like auto zone check the battery and alternator for free. If the battery is good and strong, then I would assume the starter or wiring is bad though. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому

    @Cmburgess5 rarely does anything go bad in those except the alternators themselves. If you do have a wiring problem, you will need to get your hands on a wiring diagram and trace all the wires from the battery to the ignition switch to the alternator. good luck. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому

    @kvicks916 that's generally either a weak battery, or a wearing out starter. Have the batery load tested, then replace the starter if the battery checks out OK. Soctty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  12 років тому

    @63ulices63 that test can not burn out anything, that's something else. But there is a short somewhere in the dome light system, all doors operate that and a lot of wiring, good luck tracing all that out, Me, I'd leave the fuse out.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому

    @itsneyonikka I would then remove the old wiring to thge cooling fans and would rewire them to run every time the engine is started up, it hurts nothing. They you would bypass the short that way. But that would have nothing to do with your turn signal, it's a different system. I would also go get the alternator checked by a mechanic to see if it's bad or not. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  14 років тому

    @THEWATCHER902 they have relays, but that's often a symptom of a worn out master switch assembly on the driver's side, see it all the time. Bad switches make dome lights go on and off, and chevy dashes often fall apart because of cheap circuitry which requires their replacement. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  11 років тому +1

    there are also unfused electronics, like the alternator and starter, so you have to unplug their actual connections to see if the light goes out to test for shorts in them

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  15 років тому +2

    Yes, it sure could be an old alarm. You have to check ALL the wiring and devices by unplugging them wherever their connectors are. Something is draining the juice and it's not in your fuse box. Realize there are miles of connectors and wires it could be. Good Luck scotty kilmer

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому +1

    @saqiblookingood If there's a short, the light will be on with the fuse in, and turn off when you remove the fuse. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  12 років тому +1

    many things can cause shorts, and some things are unfused, like the starter and alternator. You have to unplug every single wire to them one at a time until the light goes on if pulling all the fuses doesn't turn it off.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому

    @SRTHAR77 it flashes cause something is turning on and off. Pull the fuses out one at a time until the flashing stops, then that's the culprit. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  14 років тому

    @2ub40
    You could just have a bad ignition switch, so replace the elecrical postion of the ignition switch, that may solve all your problems. But if not, you'll have to trace all the wiring sections connected to the fan and the fuse that gets hot under the steering column. There are a LOT of wires in there. Scotty Kilmer

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  11 років тому

    there are many unfused devices too, like alternators and starters, those you have to unplug their wiring harness connectors to test

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  14 років тому

    @zambert008 NO, if the light is on, that means you have a short in the system. No light, no power is flowing, if the light is on, then power is flowing through the short. And whether the car starts or not with a short depends upon where the short is, and how long the battery has set being drained by the short. Scotty Kilmer

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  12 років тому

    @Thumbseyyy means you have a short that goes on and off, often a bad relay switch or solenoid doing that.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому

    @whitephantom3000 Take out all the fuses, and if you can't find the short, start unplugging all the wiring harness connectors, as some things like starters are not fused and have to be checked by unplugging their wiring harness connectors. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 років тому

    @nzullo tons of things can cause that, those cars aren't so hot as they age and have electrical nightmares regularly. First, have the battery and alternator load tested, places like auto zone check em for free. "New" alternators are normally just rebuilt and often don't last long. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  12 років тому

    you have shorted the wiring somehow if putting on the brakes turns the back up lights on. BUT, most states don't require BU lights for inspection, if your's doesn't , live without it. Otherwise trace ALL the wiring to the back ups.

  • @scottykilmer

  • @scottykilmer

    @WsWJoNeS08 Yes, many devices are live and non fused. So, disconnect the alternator, the starter, the main computer, etc. Something is draining it so you now have to start unplugging devices, just find their electrical connections and unplug or unbolt them. Scotty Kilmer

  • @scottykilmer

    @scottykilmer  11 років тому

    many things are unfused, like starters and alternators. Start by unplugging their power wires to see if the light goes out. something is draining it, also unplug the main computer, sometimes they just drain some small amount, and that is normal if it's a low drain.

    @rbwell2003 try powering the parking lights directly by jumping a wire from the battery to the light switch power supply. If that works, rewire it that way. If not, time to start tearing out wires looking for shorts.

    @tikafabulous start by getting rid of that thing and buying a better vehicle if you want my advice. chrysler vans are endless money pits as they get older. but if you want to try to fix it, start by doing the test in this video and check for shorts. Scotty

    @nerox562 take the door panel off and check the wiring, it's pinched somewhere. Scotty

    @jheibertz Sure you can, but if you mess up, you can screw up the whole car's electrical system (like wiring it off the ignition system.) I advise using a remote on off switch myself. Scotty Kilmer

    Well, you've got a short in that fuse system somewhere. I could be a short in the dash circuit, I see that a lot in cases like yours. Dashes are SO expensive, most guys just remove them and have them rebuilt rather than buy a new one. Scotty Kilmer

    @AKAKASP3R13 Yes, concentrrate on the blown fuse circuit first. Check the wiring from the fuse the whole way back to everything that fuse powers up. Yes, that is a royal pain, but that's what you have to do, or pay a mechanic with experience to do. Scotty

    on the fuse that is being blown, do my video "finding the source of electrical shorts". Realize that kit is like 125 bucks, worth it considering mechanics charge 100 bucks an hour figuring that stuff out

    @Burt0nSnowboarder some type of wiring OR computer module shorting out, good luck with that. Scotty

    @scottykilmer  12 років тому

    generally a bad switch does that. Change that OR put a toggle switch on and rewire power to the pump

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  12 років тому

    yes, it's normally just a bad sending unit that does that, Pray the wiring isn't coming apart though on that old thing

    @erzeeshan of course check the fuses first, and realize there are a few boxes in the car, not just one. Scotty

    many devices are unfused, such as starters and alternators. to check them, you unplug their wires going into them to see if light goes off.
