Therapist drinks the Kool-Aid by Bring Me The Horizon

  • Therapist talks about how having a baseline belief of being unworthy often keeps people stuck in toxic and abusive relationships. She discusses that in a way to keep us from struggling further our brain will often try to make the best out of a bad situation by telling us sweet lies that make the bad situation seem less toxic. If we don't believe we are worthy of better our brains will try to make the best of what currently is, even if it's unhealthy. We have to stop drinking the Kool-Aid and find a way to allow our brains to find ways out of the situation instead of keeping us content while in the situation.

@@carolinecoy3164 This is standard across all APA-certified therapists; it's well known that people don't seek therapy unless they lack perspective on their own dysfunction, therapists are taught how to properly inform patients in a way that gives them the perspective they originally lacked, it is a core part of multiple behavioural and cognitive based psychotherapies.
My advice, always see a Clinical Psychologist, rather than a Psychiatrist; due in part to the fact Psychiatrists aren't even themselves informed on research pertaining to mental health or disorders and perpetuate harmful and dangerous misinformation like memory repression, frontal lobotomies, the Satanic Panic, Memory Wars, Internal Family Systems, the existence of "Systems and Alters", etc.
I know I wrote a lot, I'm sorry, you just sound like someone who may be struggling and I wanted to let you know that you should proactively seek out APA accredited Psychologists, over APA accredited Psychiatrists, even a non-APA accredited Psychologist is more knowledgeable about cognition and behavioural sciences than a Psychiatrist, many issues people face in therapy are largely due in part to the ill understanding of these processes by Psychiatrists rather than Psychologists, and it can be a good step for you to seek out APA certification.
There was a study that puts this into perspective, they brought D.I.D. diagnosed women to be diagnosed by Psychologists and Psychiatrists, D.I.D. is hard to diagnose and very ill-understood, but 41% of Psychologists successfully diagnosed it, compared to 4% of Psychiatrists; given multiple attempts, almost every Psychologist got the diagnosis proper and attributed proper therapy, where as Psychiatrists had negligible increase, and attempted pseudoscientific psychotherapy like EMDR.

The inspiration for the song came from the Jonestown Massacre where Kool-Aid (supposedly) was spiked with Cyanide and 900 people died when they were all told to drink it. The lines of the song "Oh, my dear/Nobody loves you like I love you" I believe were from the audio recording of the massacre. As you pointed out it's about dangerously consuming the wrong thing/information. Loved the reaction 🤘

I adore your reactions! In this case, I was also thinking of the lyrics in a social/ideological context, like the relationship in question is between an individual and their cultural/social context, and talks about both disillusionment but also willful participation (drinking kool-aid by the jug - that has obvious social/historical resonances).
Of course the readings are complementary not contrastive. Thanks for your wonderful reactions!! This may be weird but reactions like this make me feel less alone because I can at least vicariously share my love for music, and I appreciate you!

i like how metal/rock bands can make you headbang to the most insane things. KoRn makes you headbang when talking about literal rape (Daddy), System Of A Down makes you headbang to a song about Serj's childhood friend who committed (Soil), Daughtry makes you headbang to a song about robots taking over the world (Artificial), and now Bring Me talking about the Jonestown Massacre. (Of course, there are a lot of other bands who made crazy songs, those are just the ones that come to mind)

This song is a very clear representation of the Jonestown Masacre, Talking about "playing God" society and the toxicism of the ones that follows those images and abusive leaders, using them and having that masoquism that we can see in this song's lyrics. Simply deep and amazing work of BMTH.

Knowing that Bring Me is using the fictional ‘Church of Genxsis’ in their live shows, I believe this song is either a direct or indirect reference to the Peoples Temple cult, where 909 people were ordered to commit mass suicide by pastor Jim Jones. The method? Drinking Flavor-Aid laced with cyanide.
I think the song can also be an allegory to how a cult treats its congregation, and maybe even make light that RTS (religious trauma syndrome) is a thing. There are stories about how people in cults were initially treated with love and embrace, to the point those same people were willing to do anything under that strong of control, whether it be committing murder or death.
And like you said, I think it could also be a reference to an abuser-victim relationship, where the victim doesn’t want anymore, but they are so into it that they agree to being subjected to more.

As did I. I will say I also did think of a person’s own struggle against an oppressive religion or belief that has left them with the fear of damnation or abandonment because they have been so indoctrinated into it and they are too engrained in it that deconstruction (breaking down your own personal beliefs in light of new evidence) is near impossible. And for those who have started the path down deconstruction, they are damaged emotionally and stunted intellectually that it can take years for them to ‘deprogram’ what they previously believed in.
For example, in the last couple of years, there have been stories about people who were Jehovah’s Witnesses, suddenly leaving the Jehovah’s Witness faith. The aftermath of leaving the faith is what is absolutely devastating for ex-JWs because it often results in losing their friends in the church, being labeled an apostate by the church, and ultimately being shunned by their family members who are JWs because JWs cannot associate with apostates, let alone look at them. Mind you, these ex-JWs were heavily involved in their faith, but faced heavy ridicule by their elders in the church. Add to that their mental and emotional intelligence is stunted by religious dogma and what members of the congregation view as correct information and what is incorrect.
A lot of it is usually started by being invited, and cordially. And before you know it, you’re in the faith, you’ve read the word, you know the core tenants of the faith - you ‘drank the Kool-Aid’ and are too deep into it. But you are also ignorant to the reality of how toxic the faith is, and by that point, it is too late to get out without facing immediate consequences.
That alone is why I think this song could be making light of something like RTS.

You would be interested in the Betrayal Trauma Theory; it is the only theory regarding a proper dissociation of memory that isn't controversial or problematic like Dissociative Amnesia (which has been debunked). People under this theory subsume traumatic memories as affectionate ones for a dependent or person in which they place in high trust, it is the compartmentalization of "all bad" states of a person but praise of the "all good" states that are dissociated upon; the victims often times do not recall traumatic experiences, and is the only theory on failure of traumatic memory recall that fits with what we know about Cognitive Psychology.
It also fits with your second comment, in the way that BTT facilitates the onset of identity disturbances with O.S.D.D. Type 3 upon departure of a cult or extreme religious groups by making traumatic experiences difficult to remember.

Hey just discovered your channel and your reactions are amazing it helps the understanding of the lyrics (especially for foreigners) so thank you
Anyway i feel like i need to share my story because i'm just completly lost. i'm currently in an online relationship with a girl but her situation is currently making us both drown. All her life she's been living hell especially in love. At the moment she's living in an apartment with her ex and hes trying everything he can to annoy her. She hates her job, she hates people, she hates society... She keeps telling me that she wants to end her life that she cant live this way. We used to call every day for hours and also sleep together but since a few days she's getting distant she doesnt want to call or even talk with anyone anymore. She keeps telling me that its a phase she just needs time to get everything back together ans that she regrets showing me this side of her even though i told her i was there for her, that i would never leave her and i could be the shoulder she can cry on anytime. I feel like i tried everything i could to give her help or attention but she just keeps telling me to leave her alone and wait for her to get better. Personally i'm also struggling with life and have suicidal thoughts and this aint helping i just dont know what to do anymore when we spend time together i manage to get along and be happy like i should be but everytime she's away i feel like i'm drowning even more than before. I just want us both to be happy.

From OneStepAtATime: Thank you so much for sharing your story. It takes a lot of strength to be open and I applaud you for that. I’m so sorry that you’re going through this. That feeling of drowning can be so unbearable, but you’re gonna get through this, and we’re here for you. Your partner is going through a lot, and you being there for them even at your own expense shows how much you value those around you and your selflessness. I admire you for that.
I heard an interesting analogy in a podcast a little while back that might apply to your situation. The host said that helping someone through a really tough time is kind of like when the oxygen gets low in an airplane. It’s important to put on your breathing mask first (meaning taking care of your own mental well-being) so that you can help others more effectively. Because you can’t help others if you can’t breathe yourself.
I really hope that things start to turn around for you and your partner. We’re here for you at HS

From ManekiNeko: It sounds like you two have shared a very close bond together and care about each other. It’s very hard to be concerned about someone and to feel like they want to try wade though their hurt by themselves.
It can certainly be hard to sit back and feel like a third party just watching and sometimes there’s this guilt that plays into it because we *should* be able to make a positive impact to their happiness in life.
In one sense it’s a good thing to acknowledge the need to help one’s self, but it’s also an important balance to reach out for support and help.
So there comes this balance between being aware that you carry concerns for someone and being able to take care of your own mental health
I think some practical ways that often help me when I am struggling but want to be supportive of someone I care about is to put right ask them how they want to be supported.
If it’s something realistic that doesn’t burn me out during the process then that’s great. Open that communication
You know, sometimes we feel like we aren’t doing enough for someone, but honestly those little check in messages can mean the world to someone. Those little messages like “hey letting you know I’m thinking of you”
And the other thing that really helps me is to be honest that I may not have the mental capacity now, but that doesn’t mean I won’t ever.
“Hey I’m struggling mentally right now, and I want you to know you’re on my mind and that I want to support you, I just need to also make sure I’m doing okay”
^ those kinds of messages and conversations become easier the more you have them.

From twixremix: hey friend, thank you for sharing your story and opening up for this community to send the love, support, and encouragement you need! it’s so hard when the ones we love are in so much pain. with what you’ve shared, the love you give to her is no doubt so appreciated. when both partners are drowning with no sight of a life-preserver or rescue boat in the water, it’s difficult to keep swimming towards the surface, towards healing. i hear you completely on how frustrating it can be when you find happiness when you’re with your partner but they aren’t around much to provide that stability and joy. i’m hoping with everything i got that you can find happiness with both your partner once she gets to the place she needs in life as well as finding happiness in other aspects this world has to offer. i wish her all the best in finding the healing she needs and starting a new chapter away from her ex. i know this moment in both of your lives is difficult but i believe in you both fully to care for yourselves first in order to care for each other to the fullest. please keep your heartsupport community posted if you need anything, we’re here for you always. you’ll be in my heart and thoughts. love, twix

My situation is a bit weird. My soon to be ex-gf and I will break up because her parents don’t want her to date anyone outside of her race.
We were basically forced to break up and are on the process of ending it. The thing you said about being worthless? That’s how I feel. Am I not enough for their daughter just for being a different race than them?
I recently found out that after her mom made us break up, she started asking about my gf’s previous suitors and asked if she likes any of them since she approves of them. Lol it stings
“Nobody loves you like I loved you” is a line similar to what we tell each other all the time as we promise to come back for each other in the future. I know it’s wishful thinking, but we’d like to live in this fantasy for now

From ThriceTheThird: Hello. Sorry that you are going through a break up. This is never fun, and can be quite painful. I do think it is inappropriate to force prejudice on someone based on their race. So this in itself I am sure is very frustrating for you. If you are truly meant to be together and both want it to be. I'm sure in the future when you are not in your respective families households, you can make it happen and be successful in that endeavor. Being respectful of parental decisions, and household rules are important until someone has moved out and becomes an independent. I hope you and her can come to terms on whatever your relationship is to be, and you can find closure on it. Feel free to share more if you ever want/need. Hope you feel a bit better and things turn out the way you hope for. <3

That's horrible what the parents are doing. They should approve someone based on how they are as a person and if they'll make their kid happy. Race, gender, and things like that should not be a factor whatsoever. I hope the parents realize the mistake their making and let their daughter be happy, but no matter what I wish the best for you no matter what happens <3

From Lisalovesfeathers: I am so sorry you are in this situation friend, it is not a reflection on you at all, there is nothing wrong with you.
It saddens me that there are people that feel that race is more important of an obstacle than how the person behaves or how kind they are. I personally would encourage you to date whomever you wish but its a struggle you will have to bear if you make that choice. I wish you well x

    • @HeartSupport
      @HeartSupport  4 місяці тому

From Micro: @zekie106 It must be so brutal and heartbreaking to deal with such type of rejection, and to see how much power it holds on a relationship that means the world to you. I can't even begin the extent of the wound it creates on your soul to hear that you're not a good fit for their daughter - and not because of who you are at a personality level, but because of something that is absolutely not in your control, and should never be a cause of rejection. Race should not even be something to consider when it comes to the love that exists between two human beings. It's terribly awful to be caught in the midst of such perspective and to suffer the consequences of it without having a say on it.
It's understandable that there are people, especially from older generations, that tend to have conservative and cultural principles as it's what makes sense to them and feel somehow safe. But it is so heartbreaking when it prevents two people who love each other to embrace their life fully and the time they have together. I'm really sorry you've been dealing with this, and completely hear you out when you say that it stings. It's like you're forced to watch a car accident happening in slow motion right in front of your eyes, and you are forced to be on the observing side, without any possibility to do something about it.
I hope with all my heart that the promise you've made to each other will help you move through this strong challenge that life throws at you. Being a cheesy heart myself, I want to wholeheartedly believe that this isn't just wishful thinking that you've expressed, but a rope you're both holding and will help anchor you during highest times of doubt and uncertainty. The deepest relationships can move mountains - they really can. *Especially* when it feels like things are already settled and couldn't be changed.
For what it's worth, I'll be wholeheartedly rooting for you both, hoping for a good future for you. You deserve so much the possibility to embrace love to the fullest. Hold Fast.
      -Micro

Kool aid is a powered fruit drink with very high (50microgrames of caffeine per 100 mls) and it was used to try and disguise the taste of cyanide in the Jonestown massicaicar look it up. This is one song that on the surface is about that, but deep down it's about a lot of stuff that people will be happy with even if it's bad for them

Says you and no one else is allowed to have a differing opinion, this song is about whatever the person listening to it feels at the time and that is all that needs to be said, yes it's about abusive relationships and how that can feel like a good place when you feel that lie is a truth. And your only right about the surface of the song not the actual meaning that anyone can find if they dig deep in.
I think you need to hear the song not just listen to it.

What she said is pretty parallel to what Oliver Sykes commented himself on this video.

  • @Marhathor
    @Marhathor 5 місяців тому

Apparently, drinking the kool-aid comes from a cult, where hundreds of people willingly drank cyanide-infused drink from a vat to follow their leader, who commanded them to.
Its use now means blindly following something, knowing it will hurt you, because of some false promise you want to believe is real.
Also apparently, this was BMTH's first song since Jordan Fish left the band. If that's what the song is about, then damn. Just damn. "I'll never let you go." "Nobody loves you like I love you." "You should've known that this was gonna end in tears." It could also just be a commentary on the event, but I suspect it's deeper than that. My best guess is, it's about his relationship with drugs. In any case, it's just another classic BMTH banger. Deep, as always.

    • @stephyhasnotificationsoff4325
      @stephyhasnotificationsoff4325 3 місяці тому

I don't think it's about Jordan, the Church of Gxnesis is a theme the band has put out and all songs from the EP so far have been consistent with ritualistic, ideological and religious abuse; the quotes you used, some of the are actual things the cult leader Jim Jones himself said to his followers, word for word. If you want to find deeper meanings, I'd personally start from Cognitive Dissonance and work out from there.

Nice interpretation! My mum sent me this too watch hehe. You deffo got some elements right, but I’ll explain the meaning
To drink the kool aid is a phrase which means you believe or blindly follow a deadly, deranged or foolish ideology or concept or structure because you’ve been told to/brainwashed. Although it originated because of the Jonestown massacre the song has nothing to do with that. Instead I’m talking about how we all blindly accept this social structure Day in day out, even though we can all feel it’s a broken , depressing, unfair system. We are addicted to things we hate, things that make us feel smaller, patterns and behaviours that keep us in repetive painful loops. We are addicted to a system that knowingly is paving our way to annihilation, yet we continue. Is this what you wanted? No. Do you want some more? Yes. Refers to how we just force feed ourselves with things we don’t even want. We are part of a generation that js regressing, a d-generation, we are the children of the devolution. ❤️‍🩹

This is my favorite song everytime i hear it i cry of happy and start stimming one time i hopped off my bed in pure joy listening to this. And the song is about social pleasure. And why are you currently discribing me 😨 oh and abt the thing at the end. My sister always hurts me and makes me want to kill myself she always makes me sad or feeling like i am worth nothing and i feel like theres no escape untill she turns 18 and moves out. And the older i get the worse it is. She is mean to me over even the smallest things, if i accidentally do something wrong she'll hit me and yell at me even if i apologize profusely.
