HOW TO HIT FAIRWAY WOODS CONSISTENTLY

- In this tip, I teach you how to hit your fairway woods consistently. So many beginners and even experienced golfers end up topping their fairway woods or just don't hit them solidly. There's a reason for that which I share with you in this tip.
Free samples from my Body Swing book and video series here: bodyswing.com/freesamples/
A lot of hitting your fairway woods better comes down to how you think. That's right. In order to hit these clubs solid and consistently you need to think of the right thing. Once you have the right thoughts it's about technique. This doesn't mean you have to change your swing. You just need to do this one thing that will allow you to hit your fairway woods higher and more solidly.
So watch this tip and try it out the next time you're at the range. If so, I guarantee you will learn how to hit your fairway woods consistently long and straight.

I think the woods you are referring to are actually the top flite intimidator titanium 400 that are based on the Lee Trevino prototype Bondo Bounce. Pretty cool none the less
If your sure they are Spalding, they may be the Spalding canon
Or the Taylor Made SIM?
So flippin' true. One more piece to your puzzle Paul is that taking the thought of LESS distance with a fairway wood will almost always result in hitting the ball in the sweet spot, so the distance will actually occur. Keep preaching, some of us are receiving your message! 😉
Exactly. I prove this all the time. Literally with about 4 balls they are hitting it amazingly well. Previous to that they couldn't get it airborne.
I have practically tried his methods and improved my game in a big way. His techniques are easy and practical. Three cheers to him. Badar
Very good. Just see it and start thinking differently. Simple is the key word.
i agree, i think thats why he gets some of the flack he does other people like to make it more difficult than it is .
Agreed.
Best golf teacher by far. I’m a beginner so watched many videos and read some amazing books.. but Paul is def the 🐐
I actually executed this loose swing thought yesterday at the range employing a smooth easy swing with my fairway wood and I was hitting phenomenal shots. Audience it really works! Thanks again Paul.
It sure does. Just got to try it.
Thanks, Paul. Ironically, I started doing this on my own with my 3 and 4 hybrid during the last round I played. I can’t tell you how unbelievably well this worked out for me. Now that you’ve said it, it’ll be stuck in my game forever. An 80% swing with clean club face contact is way better than a topped 1000% effort swing.
Very good. These clubs are so easy to hit but you need to not hit. The total opposite of what everyone wants to do. Stick with it and this will dramatically change your game. Good job.
I’ve seen so many tips from different Pro’s. You’re the only one I have subscribed to. You make it simple for us noobs to understand. Others show but you show and also explain. Thank you
Thanks for the sub! Simple is the key for sure. You actually need to understand it and try it. Too complicated and you probably won't remember it and not do it right. So you don't get the results. When I was learning I made it complicated too. This got me nowhere and I was practicing daily for years. So if I didn't get it the average person will never get it.
Just watched this again, every word you say Paul is so true. Golf is a game played in your head, and you lay out the thought process so clearly and the cure. Many thanks
Thank you so much. I just want people to understand it. If you understand it you will do it.
Great tip. Helped me today as a swing thought on fairways woods and all my other shots too. Tension free arms is the key.
Absolutely
I love the way he teaches. He's that one teacher in school your actually happy to have 😊👍⛳️
Thanks. I appreciate it.
I just really love the way you teach.... you include the head game and how to correct that. And it works!!
Thanks so much! I have always thought of "why" so I try to include that in all of my tips. Glad you like them.
I love the humor as well as the content of the video. You are 101% right in terms of relaxing and swing easy
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you fo teaching what all the other pros don’t teach. Everything needs to be said and you do that. You are practical and make it easy. My game has improved.
You're welcome. I just see it and say it differently. I know my students and what they will actually relate to and do. Just comes from 30 years of trying to make it fast and easy. Simple is the key.
This whole loose arms chat relating to where the swing is at is widest is so spot on! I rocked up for golf yesterday, Range is shut so cant hit any looseners stand on the tee and bang nail one as far off the toe as you can go without missing the face. Totally felt tight at impact. Reloaded felt the arms stretch out and pow! Ripped one so pure I didn’t feel it at impact. My driver is going straighter than ever!! Big thanks to your dedication to this channel it’s been a big help over the years
Very good. Great feeling when you know you are going to hit it pure. Keep up the good work.
I'm literally talking to the screen and agreeing with you as you so perfectly describe my issues to me. Thanks so much!!
Too funny. I know what you are going to so before you even do it. Now let's fix it.
Yet another amazing, very very helpful and problem solving session from Paul. Thanks 🙏
Happy to help!
Paul your instruction is so practical. Don't let your emotion and ego get in the way of the golf swing
Thanks. Everyone wants to try an be the hero especially when playing with friends. I need you to think the opposite. Baby it for a while. Get it. Then be the hero later.
I am new to the game and have been taking you to practice through this platform and it is awesome. This game just like any sport shouldn’t hurt if you’re doing it right. Love this tips stay blessed.
Glad you found me. You are right I shouldn't hurt. Too many people are hitting with the arms which causes the pain. Focus on turning your arms off, keeping your wrists loose and using your body as the power source.

I like how you always talk about the mind and swing thoughts. So true
This is huge and few talk about it. Get this and your whole world changes.
@@paulwilsongolf Well our world changed today on the range. Every fat, thin, skull, chunk, slice, dribble, shot was directly related to swing thoughts of trying to just kill it. My son and I would step back take a deep breath change the swing thought followed by a smooth swing. The ball would just explode. Then we get cocky and try to kill it, only to be humbled again and repeat the process.
Spot on! Will try to remember that. Hope to solve my inconsistent 3 or 5 FW woes. Thanks.
Perfect! So easy once you understand it.
Excellent video, this is exactly how I feel. I hit a bad driver and then I put so much pressure on the 3 wood and top it. Thank you for the good advice
Glad you liked it. This is big. Got to get those fairway woods airborne all of the time.
Gday Paul you are a terrific teacher. I learn a hell of a lot from you about my game and what I should be thinking when playing. Thanks for all of your technical lessons as well. They are marvellous mate.
Thanks. I appreciate the kind words and support.
I can definitley relate your observation. So many times, I have experienced this phenomenon! Getting a great shot with expectations of another great follow up shot with the wood! And, BIBGO, just as you described, a hard swing with a frustrating topped shot!
Thanks for sharing your swing thoughts.
Glad you like it. Have to stay focused and know the situation before you hit the shot.
This guy just absolutely knows what he's talking about. Thanks Paul. Keep the good stuff coming. ⛳
Well, I have been teaching the same thing for 29 years. Just experience and trying to figure out "why" things happen. If you know why then you can fix it.
The first sentance is absolutely true . thanks paul .
It sure is. I have helped countless people hit perfect fairway woods. It is usually on ball 4 after I explain what to do. Previously they couldn't get it airborne. Glad you see it. Keep this in mind whenever you have hit them in the future.
You truly have been a great help to my game. Thank you for your videos. Just bought some used Golden bear fairway woods. Can't wait to use these tips tomorrow. Thanks again.
Glad you are doing well. I love hearing it. Got to hit those fairway woods clean for sure. You will be using them a lot into the future. So simple though. Works like a charm.
This is great advice thanks it definitely works
Hi Paul. Your instructions are just so enjoyable to watch, and I think they really work. Atleast they do so for me. I also like the way you build levity in your instructions. Way to go...👍👍
Glad you like them! Thanks. Yes, I'm not monotone robot. Got to have some personality which seem to be rare these days.
After watching so many videos on the “perfect” golf swing focusing on the everything physical while your videos have helped me so much more by showing the importance of the mental game of golf. Went to the range today and let my mind do the work. using my arms as hinges, loosening the body, keeping my head down.. don’t think of distance.. sure enough I was hitting bombs dead straight.
Very good. Hitting is the problem. Stay focused.
These are the best golf videos on UA-cam. Good job.
Wow, thanks!
Paul is an amazing teacher by far.
Thanks. I appreciate it.
Paul you are absolutely spot on about the situations that lead to hitting poor fairway woods. My best shots from 200+ yards out have come from a more effortless swing with less emphasis on nailing a heroic shot to save par. Have recently acquired a new 7 wood and I am struggling a bit off the deck - I will use your advice and see if I can't hit it better. Thanks!
Glad you liked it. Yes, try this for the 7 wood. That is a pretty easy club to hit. You shouldn't have a problem.
Another easy to understand concept. Paul you have a way of communicating ideas that are easy to incorporate. Just wanted to say thanks again for the tip of having a tee six inches back and a little inside to use as an aim point to fix the over the top swing. Practicing this has resulted in the greatest improvement in my swing, ever!
I appreciate that! Keep in mind this is a quick fix (that works) you should also watch these:

So glad you found me. I truly appreciate the support.
Best tip ever on hitting woods. I applied this on course today and executed perfectly not even a single top.or fat with my 3 or 4 wood. Broke 100 for the first time (96) 👍
Thanks. It's a great feeling when you start to get it.
Paul I just want to say thank you. You helped me fix my grip and hit fairway woods better. shot my lowest score of 80 today thanks to you. Cheers
Wow, that's great. So close to the 70's. You must be super excited. Keep up the good work.
Great tip for probably the hardest club in the bag for most amateurs. Thanks Paul!
So simple. I have fixed countless people who couldn't get it airborne in about 4 balls. Just got to understand it and feel it.
Thank you Paul, years ago I sold my Driver because I though i couldn’t swing it fast enough. Hmmm. Now I know that I don’t need to swing like I was taught many years ago. I have used a 2 and 3 wood to some erratic results. Now with your instructions I will practice the easy swing and should stop topping the ball. 😀😱👍
Yes, start getting a feel for what I teach. Turn your arms off in the downswing. You are not hitting or helping the ball in any way. Once you stop hitting you will stop looking to see what you hit. This will make you more consistent. Once you get a feel for it then you might want to start hitting driver again. ua-cam.com/video/wQgWZMLgC1Y/v-deo.html these are a few basics you should be working on: Grip: ua-cam.com/video/jQZLp8bF-Ww/v-deo.html

Boy you hit the nail on the head. Exactly what happened to me today. As we rarely play courses that need fairway woods, but did today. No decent shots after good drives. Pretty much got the driver figured out thanks to Paul. On to this challenge.
This is an important shot that can make you a hero or a zero. Try to remember this every time you have this shot into the future.
Hey Paul - love the instruction style you use: it’s very easy to understand. I was wondering if you could make a video similar to your drill for ball position/ stance for distance away from the golf ball. I think I have a good understanding of it, but it would be helpful for a Paul Wilson style demo video to confirm that!
Thank you for all your tips.
Thank you for the support. I already did one on most of this here: ua-cam.com/video/o55Cl-byCq8/v-deo.html Distance from ball - 6-7" with irons a little farther with woods.
You have helped me finally connect with my 3 Wood. I was constantly topping it. Much better now, but no perfect yet. But at least I’m connecting the ball so much better and not topping it. Thank you so much.
Great to hear! Now you know what to think about. Stay focused and remember this when you have this shot in the future.
Paul Wilson Golf thank you, I sure will.
A good sense making tip Paul and I must admit I'm guilty of that too, being tense and trying to hit it as hard as I can and looking up
Absolutely. So many people do this. Let it go.
I watch one coach only. You! So many watch a myriad of videos rather than just one teacher! I’ve topped many. Thank You
Thanks for the support. I appreciate it. One teacher is the way to go. It's easy to get confused. If what I am teaching resonates with you and is making you better then that's all you need. Keep at it.
Paul, I have never seen a golf teacher who emphasized eliminating tension in the golf-swing as you have. As a self-professed "head-case", I unfortunately tend to get MORE tense rather than the opposite as a round of golf progresses; your teaching style and demeanor always give me hope. Breeeeeathe....
And I will keep emphasizing it. I know what it did for my swing many years ago and the tens of thousands of student I have taught. No way would I teach anything different. Just got to understand "why" then do a few changes and gets used to some new feelings. Once you do, you will never look back. You can do it!
Brilliant tip all in one take!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome video!! Keep them coming.
Thanks! Will do!
Great video. Thank you very much. Very good instructor
Thanks so much.
love your way of getting the point across ... normally would love hitting 5 and 3 wood off fairway ...it was my go to shot ... I have regressed to topping the shots and have lost mostly all of my confidence with the fairway woods even 4 utility ... is has to be from what you are saying ... after your thoughts remains to be seen ... Thank you .. loose and easy ..
Glad you found me. This will fix you in minutes for sure. You've got this.
Thanks Paul! Great tip! I played around yesterday and I struggled with my fair way woods. I was hoping the ball. After a few holes I lost confidence in my fairway woods. Also, I was swinging too hard.
You're welcome. Make sure you remember this one into the future. Just get some shots with great contact. This will give you confidence into the future.
Another great video Paul I've been practicing your swing and hip movements and I'm hitting the ball so much I'm 62 yrs young so not got the same movement but watching these vids I'm getting there I've dropped from 26 hcp to 21hcp in just over month and won the July medal so thanks again Paul
Very good. Just keep at it. Try to not work on too many things at once. Main things would be loose wrists so they hinge and rehinge. Not trying to hit with your arms. Using the legs and hips for power. Stay focused.
Paul Wilson Golf thanks Paul will do yea just working on them hips be like Elvis before long 😂👍🏌
Exactly. He would have hit it a mile.
Paul you are so right on the psychology of the fairway wood. I figured out my personal technique (which might work for others as well) is that I have to watch the ball as I’m hitting it. One time I had to carry the ball at least 170 yards over a large body of water. I thought well, I’m going to lose this ball or top it and it will dribble up to the pond (so I didn’t really care about the carry distance I just wanted to try it). I watched the ball, hit a good strike and couldn’t see it due to the sun angle. So, as I drove up I looked first on the close side of the pond and then on the far side of the pond and I still could not find my ball. I looked approximately 25 to 30 yards up the hill toward the hole and lo and behold there was my ball. I can’t remember what I did after that with the chip in put but I will never forget that clean three wood shot.
Yes, this can happen especially when you are learning it.
Wow just the thoughts and it’ll change man i ought to try that. I seriously have zero confident every time i use the 3 woods or the 5 woods. So will try your method. Thanks
You can do it! So simple if you change the way you think.
U nailed it...perfectly...appreciate so much ..hope I can do it..
Works like magic. I have had person after person who were topping the fairway woods hit them perfect in no more than 6 balls. Just follow along and you too will hit them great too.
Great video.Thanks for the tips
Glad you liked it. Thanks.
Thank for the tips Paul...this is really my problem...
Not anymore. This is so simple. Follow this tip and within a few balls you will be killing it. I prove this to people who come for lessons saying they can't hit fairway woods constantly. You've got this.
He teaches very good, very convincing approach.
Many thanks! People just have to try it.
Thank you Paul Wilson Golf, This tip paid immediate dividends
Very good. Just need to know why it happens. This will help your game immensely.
You are truly a good coach. I wish there was a way we could get you to Tanzania for a golf clinic. Everything you coach l try it out and it helps my game.

Hi Paul - I love the Spalding Lee Trevino woods story - aounds like Spalding knew their buying market! You are so great and animated in your videos - with all the experience you have teaching golf, you could definitely do stand-up comedy! Thanks for another great golf tip!
I would literally check those clubs out every time I wandered around the shop. They sat on that rack for years. The pro should have allowed people to tape them up and hit them. They would have seen great fairway woods shots instantly. Probably ended up in the junk yard. Not sure about stand up. I do say it like it is though which can be funny to most and a few thin skinned babies get turned off. If you can't handle me then your playing the wrong game.
This guy is the best, cracked me up the whole time.
Thanks so much. Glad you see the humor in it. Just telling it like it is (which is funny).
Thanks for stating the truth. Better to try to salvage score with a putt versus hitting a 3 wood from too far away!!! Thanks for the honesty and practical advise!
Exactly. People just need to understand it. Hit great shots and you get confident then you can increase the speed if necessary.
Something that has really helped me is thinking about starting the ball over an intermediate target 30 to 50 yards out. I think that this helps to eliminate the "distance" thought.
Great. Glad you tried it. Never think distance on these shots. If so you will watching it rolling down the fairway.
Great tip! Just tried it as your tip and got it. It really helps me greatly!
Very good. Glad you tried it and are seeing results. Hitting great fairway woods are important shots to play your best golf.

Thanks. Glad you liked it.

Very good. Do this and you will hit them perfectly. I prove this all of the time. Usually it takes me 4 balls to fix the person.

Glad you liked it. I have helped countless people hit amazing fairway woods within 6 balls.
Great video. Wish I where a few years younger. ( many years younger) Will keep trying. Thanks
Thnaks so much. I have heard that one many times over the years. The effortless swing I teach is for life so you have plenty of time.
Top notch
My only visit to Bears Best we had miscommunication on a tee time I booked way in advance. I was put out behind a very slow tournament in 100 degree heat. I loved it. The course is awesome. I played two balls and my wife rode with me. We had a blast.
Fun course for sure. I never get sick of it.
@@paulwilsongolf I should also mention you guys let me play again the next day on the house because it was so slow and hot.
Every time I come to Vegas I will be playing Bear's Best
I like your loosen up idea! There is no club I fear more than a fairway wood!
No problem. 6 balls doing what i suggest and you will be hitting great.

Three woods and even driver off the deck is a breeze. Just need to let it go. Try to hit and you will never get it airborne.
Paul- Thanks for the great tip. For an older golfer of 68 years old, please keep those tips coming. Besides topping shots, can you help me with popping up tee shots with my driver. Thanks as always.
Glad you liked it. Thanks. Skying is you getting your head ahead of the ball in the downswing. This is due to hitting with your arms. I still remember the last ball I ever skyed. After that, I kept my head behind the ball as I hit the ball. Here you go:

Paul, our motto in the Air Force is "Aim High". My saying to you is "You Rock". Keep up the good work.
Nice. I like that one. Other people say I sound "mean." What a bunch of babies.
@@paulwilsongolf Having spent 12 years in Gainesville Florida I can say you sound like an exasperated southerner. And I love it!
Psychological plumbing of the mind. You are the best plumber
Thanks so much.
I never looked up and saw a nice shot💯💯
Exactly. I say this to people all of the time. Got to delay your reaction.
solid advice ...I might add ...1. Be sure to shift weight onto lead heel in transition ...and 2. Maintain the same angle of arms to shaft (as established at address) at impact
Shifting would be a thought but that will get too many thoughts just a the moment. Think of the things in the video. Hit some great shots. Then you get confidence knowing you can do it. Then you can work on other things. Too many thought and you will never get it so you think you can't do it. Relaxing the arms alone and not having distance thoughts will get anyone hitting amazing shots.
I used to be a topper or duffer of the fairway wood, last week I tried hitting the fairway wood at the range, slowed down my swing tucked my right elbow, and damn 200yrds, I'm 62 just getting back into the game after 26 yrs dormant, finally I have another club in the bag..
Very good. So simple to hit these shots solidly. Glad you tried it and are seeing results. Keep at it. I have taught many people in your situation who took a break and are getting back into it. Anyone in this situtation will hit with their arms when they get back into golf. This is due to human nature. I talk about it in this tip:
ua-cam.com/video/fuOJxv_22Hk/v-deo.html
I have been doing and thinking exactly As You
Describe, I am
Going to try today To slow It down and stop
Thinking distance.
Very good. I have fixed countless people in minutes allowing them to just nail 3 woods when previously they couldn't get it airborne. You've got this.
Wow just got home from a game and hit my driver 328 yards…. Something to be said for just slowing it down.
I’m a very ordinary golfer with a handicap of 25, I’m 60 years of age, and I’ve never hit a ball that far
That's great! Now that you've seen it NEVER start swinging hard ever ever ever again.
This is huge. Your potential is unlimited. Most people need both consistency and distance. If you have one of them and you are not out there playing and practicing as much as you can it's a waste.
Paul, I love your messages on 'not distance' just relax and enjoy the swing, I am sure it would be very enjoyable rib tickling lesson. I was in Vegas 2 weeks back, wanted to come and book a lesson but my conference schedule did not allow it. Maybe next time.
Glad you liked it. Got a lady striping 3 woods perfectly today by doing what I said in this tip. Let me know next time. Be great to meet you.
You know me all to well!
I sure do!
This was more of a mental lesson than swing mechanics. "The longest distance in golf is the six inches between your ears." I went through several brands of 3-woods before settling on a Callaway Razr Hawk. Less is more. It has saved my clunker drive many a time and I swing it easy, no easier. My partner will grab it and tap on the face to see what its made of. Thanks Paul!
Exactly. A mental lesson that no one has even mentioned. I've always ask myself "why." There has to be a reason for swing flaws and bad shots. Once you know that you can fix it.
This is me all over quite often a distance thought when playing with bigger hitters.
Right. You need to play your own game. Beat them with consistency.
Thnks for sharing the tips how to play gulf God bless 👍🌹
My pleasure 😊

I think I have seen that Spaulding club at Goodwill. It does have that "bulge on it." It is a very heavy club. Thank you for your video, Paul. I have a good friend I have played golf with for the last six years. He can really hit a long drive, but when it comes to fairway woods, he tops it to often. I hope this will help.
It was a long time ago. Probably 30 years old. Glad you liked the tip. Let him know. It's not fun watching other people struggle.
I just figured out my mistake; thank you Guru 🙂
Very good. I love it when people get it on their own. Isn't that the whole point. You need to do it without me.
Thanks Paul, I actually stopped using the 3W off the fairway because of many types of mishits. So I use my 3H instead, much better result, even when I did actually hit the 3W great, my 3H goes further for some reason. I will try again & see how I go.
You're welcome. 3W is easy to hit. I have literally helped countless people over the years who couldn't get them airborne. Usually takes me no more than 4 balls and they hit it perfectly. Just need to understand it and loosen up. You've got this.
This makes perfect sense. I’m topping my wood and hybrid off the tee. I’m sure I’m tense trying to kill it
Yep, this will fix you in minutes. I prove this to students all the time.
