So, if it's a short distance away doing a high jump will get you up there and if it's a long distance away doing a long jump will get you up there. the first jump in digital dimension is also reversed so in order to get up there you have to do a long jump instead of a high jump

Nice. My favourite thing to do in this game is getting onto all those short cuts by jumping off of the ramps. Never knew how to do it consistently at first but when I figured it out it was so satisfying and it kinda breaks the game if you ask me. I also never knew how to use the flight shortcuts when I was younger; I always used to waggle the control stick up and down rapidly as I thought that was what the game was telling me to do. 😅 Also never thought I’d actually learn something new here. Didn’t know you could get off of turbulences by pressing both L and R holy shit.
Yeah I think I only found out how to get off turbulence by reading an FAQ when I was a little kid? I tried to find the exact one again for this video because I remember it had ASCII maps of the tracks in it but apparently it's just been lost
Thank you so much first time playing the original especially when I grew up on zero gravity the skill gap was very different this helped so much! You should do more of these in depth gameplay deep dives I love it a lot!!
I just bought the game off ebay and this has helped so much. I can do X ranks with ease now that I know I can go farther when jumping off a ramp (holding forward) and going higher when jumping (holding back) as well as reaching certain shortcuts
This is wild, I actually 100%’d this game this summer, and had to use FAQs to learn most of the games systems again. Crazy how there’s new Sonic Riders content just popping up all of a sudden lol. Even though I already beat the game I’m still going to watch Incase there’s something I missed 😁
I play this game to this day. Its really amazing, Sega should really remaster and release it for new plataforms, maybe even go all out and build a online mode? That would be epic.
ok i wanna start by saying that i respect the hell out of you for taking your time to do this, (Aside the fact ive been playing this game and its modded verient for years now) the reason i respect this is because dispite this is a Racing game with hand full of combat mechanics, the game has no tutorial and that can leave players confused, as for me i matched the colors and relied on my raging game knowledge from mario kart Double dash, Diddy kong racing, 1080, 1080 avalanche, SSX3, and the Nascar14 game for the Playstation for controlls. so 100% respect to you
Honestly, when it comes to the tornado (L1+R1) I use it a lot when I was just starting out, especially when I still don't know the maps too well and the races are too close for comfort. Whenever I know for sure that I am making turbulence and the CPUs are riding it, I would drop a tornado and boost immediately and it actually gives me a solid few seconds to gain distance cause it throws the other racers into the air. I found this out when I was playing this game with my friend and we made the tornado on accident, so I know what happens if you hit it. Of course after a while I don't really use it much but it's still a good trick to have up my sleeve. Also, love the tutorial. It definitely helps the people trying to pick up this game. And fun fact, if you do the story mode and all the challenges, you can unlock super sonic and challenge yourself to a race while managing ring consumption. Probably one of my favorite gear in the game
I played this game all the time as a kid and just bought a PS2 to play it again. I never unlocked the special characters as a kid. Now that I have it, I'm determined. I'm having trouble beating the Hero/Babylon cup. So thank you for sharing all these tips! I never knew you could drop a tornado. Wish me luck! I really want Nights 😭 Edit: I have returned to share I finally beat the Grand Prix. Learning those ramps for those important skips saved me so much time.
This is a very well done video. I'm surprised it hasn't got more views. Someone linked it in the Riders Netplay server and what can I say? I like it. If I see someone not familiar with the game I would totally show them this.
That's great to hear honestly. Upon release I had a hard time getting it out to the right people so i'm glad to hear it made it to a Riders Central server. I think it has so little views because the audio editing is bad cause i didn't know how to at the time, and i had blended frames turned on in Vegas while rendering, plus the fps is locked at 30 when the game runs much higher than that. Glad to hear it's useful to people!
This should be included in the game. Good stuff for beginners since the game tutorial doesn't do much. I'm curious as to which one is the best version.
It makes me happy to see that this game is getting a random surge of attention. Hell, I suddenly got into it like a few months ago out of nowhere and realized how fun it was.
Defo a game worth getting over the learning curve. Give it a fair chance and you’ll enjoy it. I managed to get the hang of it in a matter of less than half an hour.
aah, nostalgia~... Remembering my first steps in this game is so heartwarming, 'cause I really like Sonic games. And of course it was really hard to discover all of the secrets and techniques as a kid, especially in Russia :D (because I didn't have the Internet or even the manual for this game, just disk in a box). But now I'm very proud of myself for discovering all the things in this game in such a young age:)
This is a great video that really helped me get back on the track after many many years! Thanks a bunch for this comprehensive guide on the controls and mechanics!
Got a used Wii and found this game at the store that I used to play when i was a kid. Thanks for the in depth tutorial. Ill be sure to put it to good use when my friends come by and we relive the old days.
This was one of my favorite games for the ps2.. It was so freaking cool, hover boards, the speed, the cutscenes, the music and the hwole high tech future aestetic was SUPER cool and the veriety and wildness of the tracks were NUTS!.. Police chases, high tech cities, sandy ruinds, lush forests, floating ancient cities (hardest fucking thing i ever did as a kid).. I had to learn everything on my own as i didn't know english at the time. So i fully masterd the game by simple trial, error & experimenting. God i really wish we would get a new riders game. The more recent regular cart racers i feel REALLY don't fit sonic and the cast at all.. Like why would the fastest thing alive drive a car?? If we're on hoverboards speed and everything is up to the imagination.
A very interesting fact to note is that the type shortcuts (it's what I call those rail grinds, holes and etc) never change positions in any of the maps apart from digital dimensions map which rotates the placement of them every lap
Wow. This is very impressive. You did a really good job explaining everything. This video gave my crazy nostalgia I’m going to find my copy and play this again!!! Great job with the video.
If any of you are having trouble completing the Story Mode because the Babylon Story is messing you up, use this tutorial to make it easier for you. Best Tip: LOOK EVERYWHERE FOR SHORTCUTS WITH THE CHARACTERS YOU’RE PLAYING AS AND MEMORIZE THEM. IT WILL HELP OR ELSE YOU’LL KEEP LOSING AND BE STUCK ON THE GOAL.
Question have you heard of sonic riders tournament edition? It’s a mod that adds net play to compete online with other people which I think is where the depth of this game really shines they have a discord server if you wanna know more info
2023 I was pretty terrible at the game as a kid and always got last place but i never hated this game. Now that i have a job and making my own money i can buy myself a GameCube and get sonic riders. Thanks to this video i know how to play better and enjoy the game. Thank you for explaining everything perfectly. Cant wait to play again.
3 minutes in so far. . . Essential Flashback: *purchased Sonic Riders and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle for the Gamecube, sucked at both due to not having the instruction manuals included, returning them for Mario series games.* 2020, now: *after seeing Sonic the Hedgehog on Valentine's Day, repurchasing Sonic Adventure 2: Battle for the PS3, and searching for the Riders Soundtrack, gets THIS recommended. . .* I can't believe I returned it years ago! My sister and I would've duked it out as Shadow and Sonic by now!
if i can make a recomendation, cause i've been playing adventure 2 on steam parts of the game initially seem horribly designed. the game has the same issues riders has where it teaches the player very little specifically i'm talking about adventure 2's ranking system. it's not static and the required score to get A is different on every stage, for every mission. A quick google search will explain more
@@PSPMan I'll make sure to Google what you mean later. A-Ranks and their medals in Adventure 2: Battle are truly challenging to earn in that game in comparison to Adventure DX whenever I play them both. Knuckles and Rouge's stages are what I still struggle with the most due to the severely restricted radar compared to SADX, where I could glide as Knuckles and traverse Red Mountain easier, as my luck had the Master Emerald shards in the same radius whenever I replayed his campaign. Eggman and Tails' are what I can ace on my best days, and give up on on my worst. Sonic and Shadow's are whose stages I almost always replay the most, although I tend to speedrun their stages more instead of actually collecting rings, animals, GUN Robot's Chaos Drives, or performing tricks to score the best Ranks possible. Compared to 12 years ago, the most hindering thing that came to my experience was not having a memory card. My Gamecube is still in my possession, yet it sadly can't read the discs anymore.
@@techlover1664 yeah those stages are something youll need to look up. they seem impossible but they aren't. game just doesn't tell you how to play them
played this game as a kid around the time the game came out in 2006, was terrible at it yet somehow slowly beat the game over the course of....probably well over 100 hours. i just didnt understand how to do things properly. im 28 now, felt an urge to play the game, was having some trouble but still beat all the races in the first story on my first attempt (except the last one....) which caused me to look up a video, found this one. i then went on to beat the track after a couple more attempts....it took me about 90 minutes to finish the first story set which is just crazy when it took me hours PER TRACK back in the day. game is extremely fun when you know what you are doing and kinda trash if you dont. i never knew why i would get so much airtime or distance off ramps as a kid i just figured it was random
Yeah, I feel like that's the big issue with the Sonic games of this era, a lot of them have polishing issues, but underneath that they're usually pretty deep mechanically but do a terrible job relaying that to the player. It ends up being a "if you know, you know" type of situation
The part about character attack animation for Sonic , Sonic punches his opponents at level one whenever he goes beside them and as we all know level two and three is where he rolls
Amazing video. You didn't miss anything, at least this is everything I know, and this is surely going to help newcomers to get Riders' gameplay pretty easily. However, I disagree with Tornadoes being useless. You see, as soon as you get control out of an automated section, you can do an Air Tornado, which essentially lets you trap your opponents after they're done with said sections. One example I always use this on, is Babylon Garden's loop. When I'm done, I do the Tornado and almost always trap the 2nd place behind me. Really, the Tornado is a good technique if you know when to use it. But the most important thing, is having lots of air, otherwise, yeah, it's just counterproductive.
Thank you for making a way more in-depth tutorial on tips and how to get better at the game easier. It helped me beat the Babylon story because of you.
You forgot to mention that speed characters grinding rails, flight characters flying through suspended rings and power characters smashing obstacles also refill your air tank. And these are usually shortcut routes too.
I've 100% the game and have pretty much mastered everything but I'm still watching this just in case there's something I somehow don't know EDIT: Sure enough I had no idea you could manually leave turbulence this entire time. This saves me so many headaches from wanting to just hit a damn grind rail but I can't because I'm stuck in turbulence
Younger me would have never thought that my favorite PS2 game when I was like 8 would still be remembered and played by a community of new players several years later. I used to think people thought I was cringe because I liked music in video games and low and behold as I grew up it's a whole thing now that videogames try to have the best sound tracks.
Wow dude, thanks so much for making this video, from someone who played zero gravity first, to know playing the original the skill gap was massive and I sucked but after watching this tutorial, I definitely have way more confidence!!! Thanks again 👍👍
I recently acquired both sonic riders and zero gravity again and I *never* knew, until now, that holding back and forwards gives high and long jumps respectively. I knew that in zero gravity, holding either back or forward would let me execute an X rated jump but oh my God I can't believe kid me never figured this out. Thank you so much.
16:42 i think you are really really missing out if you dont use special equipment that gives you abilities of other classes, like the witch broom which can grind on rails. Use that with Knuckles or Tails and you can both knock cars/fly through hoops and grind on rails. Or magic carpet which gives you ability of an air class, so you can pick knuckles or sonic (knock down cars or grind on rails) plus fly through hoops. Its too OP for multiplayer, but its cool as hell. I remember my cousins gave me their PS2 for 3 days and i had to learn and figure out everything this game had to offer in just 3 days. I rememeber i unlocked every character except one, and found out all the secret mechanics and also the ability to jump into secrets by holding back. Didn't know i could jump to other ones by holding forward!!! Also the air trails were driving me mad, never knew that i could hop off them by pressing L1 and R1 that would save me a lot of headache back in the day!
Of all my years playing this game, even as a child. I never knew you could hold back and forward to get the shortcuts, I always thought they were random or you had to let go of the jump button at the right time.
It likely is, other people have commented that the items in this game works similar to those in Mario Kart where you'll get better ones the farther behind you are
Great video! This was my favorite Sonic game as a kid and I'm happy it's getting some love. Quick thing though, I don't think you need to press A the jump button again to grind, i think you just need to land on the rail after jumping.
At the very least for the PS2 version you need to press X in the air to land on the rail, even has it in the instruction manual. When my friends & I were trying to work it out we did try your method to no avail.
Such a well written and presented primer for Sonic Riders! Thanks for making this, and I wanted to mention I'm going to feature this in an S-Tier writing seminar segment on a livestream this wednesday. The details are on my community page, don't mean to plug but wanted to let you know!
@PSPMan well I'm glad I spoke up, since, I'm a particularly critical critic when it comes to writing, and this video blew me away! I give you full blessing to be proud of your writing lol.
great video, by the way, the items isn't 100% random, the chances of getting invisibility is very much higher when you're in the last place, i tried this out and it worked
From what I learn I needed more durable controllers with durable joysticks. I was so addicted to this game when it was released on gamecube I had to replace all 4 gamecube controllers because each joystick broke. My siblings were mad when they couldn't play Mario Party or Smash Bro's.
honestly man you should be fine with first party GameCube controllers. third party controllers typically suck anyways and usually have bad sticks. but I get the feeling you're going a little hard with the automatic trail sections
Managed to get Riders again for PC and having a good time with it. I can mind having it for either the Gamecube or PS2 back in the day. I think the first thing that really reminded me of Riders again was that Project Hero fan game, which really does feel like a throwback to the classic Adventure style featuring Sonic, Tails & Knuckles. The fact alone that its got that Adventure thing going is fantastic, more so for Tails being true his SA1 incarnation, meaning he can stretch his legs and run again, rather than being confined to the mech like SA2. But then after showing off what the game can do "press F3 to pull out a Gear from Riders." WTF!? And just like that even with the Adventure style game, and SA1 Tails, it went up massively in how great it is, even if you couldn't actually do tricks. Hopefully the guy can get an actual game made, and/or gets picked up by Sega for another Mania like independent game from the fan community like Taxman and Co.
Thanks for the help, i never could figure out how to work the grind ability, and i loved how when you went to talk about the items, how you transitioned into the main theme of Super Mario Land 3 Wario Land (which is the ONLY Wario Land game i have physically)
I'm not entirely sure because i haven't tried out but i have seen people getting out of turbulences by just drifting without doing a tornado, this doesn't launch you out of the turbulence and actually gives you more freedom on how yo get out of it
I've played this game for years and I didnt even know some of this stuff. I had no idea dropping tornados was even a thing. And seeing Eggman punch away a whole car was just... Wow, why doesnt he just punch sonic in the main games?
“Being on foot won’t win any races”

This is wild, I actually 100%’d this game this summer, and had to use FAQs to learn most of the games systems again. Crazy how there’s new Sonic Riders content just popping up all of a sudden lol. Even though I already beat the game I’m still going to watch Incase there’s something I missed 😁
Appreciate this man this game was my childhood
My ps2 is now broken lol but i still watched this till the end
I play this game to this day. Its really amazing, Sega should really remaster and release it for new plataforms, maybe even go all out and build a online mode? That would be epic.
Or maybe a tournament mode.
ok i wanna start by saying that i respect the hell out of you for taking your time to do this, (Aside the fact ive been playing this game and its modded verient for years now)
the reason i respect this is because dispite this is a Racing game with hand full of combat mechanics, the game has no tutorial and that can leave players confused, as for me i matched the colors and relied on my raging game knowledge from mario kart Double dash, Diddy kong racing, 1080, 1080 avalanche, SSX3, and the Nascar14 game for the Playstation for controlls. so 100% respect to you
Honestly, when it comes to the tornado (L1+R1) I use it a lot when I was just starting out, especially when I still don't know the maps too well and the races are too close for comfort.
I really want Nights 😭
Edit: I have returned to share I finally beat the Grand Prix.
@@PSPMan You should join our server. We make a tournament mod of Sonic Riders for people to play with each other online.

Wait Sonic riders have net play? I want to try it!
This is an amazing game that I would play all the time when I was younger. It is great to see people talking about it.
this tutorial is a godsend. sonic riders is so cool but man its difficult to learn
Defo a game worth getting over the learning curve. Give it a fair chance and you’ll enjoy it. I managed to get the hang of it in a matter of less than half an hour.
I spent a lot playing sonic riders as a kid by hours, and i didn't know about the bomb capsule until now :O
I remember playing this with my cousin who had it on a PS2 when I was 7
aah, nostalgia~...
Blyat?
I grew playing this and NOW I'm seeing guides and videos about it. Thank you this is great. This game's a classic
This is a great video that really helped me get back on the track after many many years! Thanks a bunch for this comprehensive guide on the controls and mechanics!
out of all my years playing i never knew that tilting the stick when going off the ramp made a difference....
If i only had watched this tutorial 14 years ago...
Tx
Got a used Wii and found this game at the store that I used to play when i was a kid. Thanks for the in depth tutorial. Ill be sure to put it to good use when my friends come by and we relive the old days.
One more thing is that you can press A (or X depending on if you're playing on PS2) to exit the air pit early. Great Video!
The OST for this game is a straight banger
A very interesting fact to note is that the type shortcuts (it's what I call those rail grinds, holes and etc) never change positions in any of the maps apart from digital dimensions map which rotates the placement of them every lap
Wow. This is very impressive. You did a really good job explaining everything. This video gave my crazy nostalgia I’m going to find my copy and play this again!!! Great job with the video.
This game gets more infinity cooler the more I learn about it
If any of you are having trouble completing the Story Mode because the Babylon Story is messing you up, use this tutorial to make it easier for you.
It’s a mod that adds net play to compete online with other people which I think is where the depth of this game really shines
they have a discord server if you wanna know more info
yeah I'm in their discord server I just don't play. They actually found this video about a week or 2 after I made it.
2023
I was pretty terrible at the game as a kid and always got last place but i never hated this game. Now that i have a job and making my own money i can buy myself a GameCube and get sonic riders. Thanks to this video i know how to play better and enjoy the game. Thank you for explaining everything perfectly. Cant wait to play again.
3 minutes in so far. . .
Essential Flashback: *purchased Sonic Riders and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle for the Gamecube, sucked at both due to not having the instruction manuals included, returning them for Mario series games.*
2020, now: *after seeing Sonic the Hedgehog on Valentine's Day, repurchasing Sonic Adventure 2: Battle for the PS3, and searching for the Riders Soundtrack, gets THIS recommended. . .* I can't believe I returned it years ago! My sister and I would've duked it out as Shadow and Sonic by now!
if i can make a recomendation, cause i've been playing adventure 2 on steam
parts of the game initially seem horribly designed. the game has the same issues riders has where it teaches the player very little
specifically i'm talking about adventure 2's ranking system. it's not static and the required score to get A is different on every stage, for every mission. A quick google search will explain more
@@PSPMan
I'll make sure to Google what you mean later.
@@techlover1664 yeah those stages are something youll need to look up. they seem impossible but they aren't. game just doesn't tell you how to play them
@@PSPMan
With. . ."this crisis" occuring, I hope you stay safe and be careful!
Nimbus is best board , I personally love it !
played this game as a kid around the time the game came out in 2006, was terrible at it yet somehow slowly beat the game over the course of....probably well over 100 hours. i just didnt understand how to do things properly.
im 28 now, felt an urge to play the game, was having some trouble but still beat all the races in the first story on my first attempt (except the last one....) which caused me to look up a video, found this one.
i then went on to beat the track after a couple more attempts....it took me about 90 minutes to finish the first story set which is just crazy when it took me hours PER TRACK back in the day.
game is extremely fun when you know what you are doing and kinda trash if you dont. i never knew why i would get so much airtime or distance off ramps as a kid i just figured it was random
I like to think I'm good at this game, but I didn't even know about the different jump types or that you could just exit turbulence whenever.
Thank you so much, I got the game recently and it didn’t have a manual so I sucked at it, now everyone I race I get 1st 🔥💪🏽💯
Thank you for making a way more in-depth tutorial on tips and how to get better at the game easier. It helped me beat the Babylon story because of you.
You forgot to mention that speed characters grinding rails, flight characters flying through suspended rings and power characters smashing obstacles also refill your air tank. And these are usually shortcut routes too.
this game is HAAARRDD I have seriously passed every single Gran Turismo License test in the series but this game is BRUTAL with the learning curve!
Love this game big time, one of my favorite gamecube games that I always find myself going back to surpass my older times.
Extra tip on AirPits:
If ever accidentally run into one press the jump button to make a quick exit to keep going.
My brother got me this game when I was little and it was my first Sonic game until I looked up Sonic on youtube and found a whole world
I've 100% the game and have pretty much mastered everything but I'm still watching this just in case there's something I somehow don't know
EDIT: Sure enough I had no idea you could manually leave turbulence this entire time. This saves me so many headaches from wanting to just hit a damn grind rail but I can't because I'm stuck in turbulence
To find out which jump is you just have to look at the ramp if it curve higher in the air hold back if it’s not as steep hold forward
OK THANK YOU I DID NOT KNOW THIS
Younger me would have never thought that my favorite PS2 game when I was like 8 would still be remembered and played by a community of new players several years later. I used to think people thought I was cringe because I liked music in video games and low and behold as I grew up it's a whole thing now that videogames try to have the best sound tracks.
This game is one of my childhood
made me sub. Sonic Riders is my shit, i wish more people would pick it up. awesome stuff bro.
This is probably the most useful how to play video ever
Wow dude, thanks so much for making this video, from someone who played zero gravity first, to know playing the original the skill gap was massive and I sucked but after watching this tutorial, I definitely have way more confidence!!! Thanks again 👍👍
I recently acquired both sonic riders and zero gravity again and I *never* knew, until now, that holding back and forwards gives high and long jumps respectively. I knew that in zero gravity, holding either back or forward would let me execute an X rated jump but oh my God I can't believe kid me never figured this out. Thank you so much.
you're welcome, I literally didn't understand it till I looked up a guide on gameFAQs back in the day so I feel you
I had no clue people were confused on how to play riders until a couple weeks ago
I just want to thank you for making this. I’m getting this game soon and I was kind of scared because the game doesn’t teach you anything. Thanks.
I am so getting this game rn
I already beaten this game soo many times and I learned everything on trial and error.
Fantastic video, I love watching guides to games that I loved as a kid to see what I knew and missed. Great job!
You kind soul, I couldn’t figure out what to do on the Junk Missions with the short and long jumps 😅
Of all my years playing this game, even as a child. I never knew you could hold back and forward to get the shortcuts, I always thought they were random or you had to let go of the jump button at the right time.
I felt like invincibility is common when you're in last place
It likely is, other people have commented that the items in this game works similar to those in Mario Kart where you'll get better ones the farther behind you are
Just got the game!
@@wehtawnikrap Ah, my experience is on the GC version. Might be different.
Honestly I’ve mastered this game and I see how hard it is to play this game 😭
Thanks for coming up with this very well written tutorial.
Personally, it would've been more usefull to me when I was ten or something, but who knows?
It blesses me when you get the row of rings every time
4:58 I've been regularly playing this game for months on end and I literally never knew you could do this.
@Abraham Lincoln High School Huh?
Such a well written and presented primer for Sonic Riders! Thanks for making this, and I wanted to mention I'm going to feature this in an S-Tier writing seminar segment on a livestream this wednesday. The details are on my community page, don't mean to plug but wanted to let you know!
Thanks, that means a lot since I consider my writing to be kind of terrible. It's the thing I struggle with the most when making videos
I would actually love to see this game get remastered for Switch.
Thanks for the help, i never could figure out how to work the grind ability, and i loved how when you went to talk about the items, how you transitioned into the main theme of Super Mario Land 3 Wario Land (which is the ONLY Wario Land game i have physically)
I'm not entirely sure because i haven't tried out but i have seen people getting out of turbulences by just drifting without doing a tornado, this doesn't launch you out of the turbulence and actually gives you more freedom on how yo get out of it
Darkness S is one of best gears to blaze through the game.
The bomb does make you lose rings if hit by it. You were right on that one.
Another tip: You can leave a Pit Stop before it maxes out your Air Tank by pressing the jump button
Yep! This is one of things I forgot to mention and I'm not sure why since I do it constantly lol
I've played this game for years and I didnt even know some of this stuff.
I had no idea dropping tornados was even a thing.
And seeing Eggman punch away a whole car was just... Wow, why doesnt he just punch sonic in the main games?
Sonic is spiky he's a hedgehog that's why lol
@@Sholver doesnt seem to stop knuckles. Or shadow.
Also couldnt eggman give himself some tech armor like ironman thats spike-proof?
@@OmegaChase1002 Hold on, keep cooking
