What do you guys think the McCallister did for living? I go first, I think the mom was the boss lady she defiantly wore the pants in the relationship, I would say the mom was an C-suit executive of Kraft Heinz Company in Chicago and the dad was a commodities trader at Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME)

The dad was a mob boss, how else could he afford this big house and send 9 people to Paris for Christmas.merv and harry rival gangs. Kevin was gangster entire time never went to police, took care of business all on his home.

The dad Peter was a stockbroker pulling in more than average, maybe $2 million per year and mom Kate was a fashion designer, which is why there are so many mannequins in their house. Peter's older brother Rob ran the family business which has offices in New York and Paris but the company itself isn't described, could be a law firm or Rob's in the mob, either way Rob paid for both McCallister family vacations.

It could have been any number of middle class professions, as back when Home Alone was released, and the era the movie is set in, the average middle class household could afford a decent house or condo. Houses of similar sizes, amenities and location as the Home Alone house probably would cost in the neighborhood of $180,000 - $200,000, and the average income was closer to a third or half the average price of a home, meaning if you had stable employment making the median wage, you could comfortably afford a house of your own, it may need have been as large as the Home Alone house, but still, the dwelling would be more than adequate to raise a family in. The same can't be said for these days, when the average price of a house is now over five times the average annual income, and even renting a studio or one bedroom apartment is a financial strain for most millennials and gen-zedders.

I think Kevin's father (Peter) is having a good job with better income than average, but not "on the top". His family seems to be quite successful, since they are going to Paris to see his brother (Rob) that was transferred there and since he missed the family HE sent them the tickets. In Home Alone 2, the same brother has the townhouse in NY that is under renovation. I sense that he is richer than Peter.
Anyways, I think Peter earns enough to have a wife that is the homemaker. Even her psychology seems stronger than her husband's, I believe that is needed to deal with a big household and children like we see in the movie. 😉

@6:44 that’s how a lot of houses in the Midwest are designed. A lot of them have a covered wrap around porch that goes around to the garage. Fancier houses will have the corner of the porch rounded out like a gazebo type shape. Maybe it’s just what I’m used to but I love that style of house & having a large covered porch to sit on during storms or at night time. I also like the bigger fancier farm style (northern plantation style w/o the negative connotations) with second & third story covered balconies/loggias with wide views of the land whether it’s farmland or a lake or forest.

Arvin, I agree. The Home Alone house is more early Federal than Georgian. I like the symmetry, and the brick facade gives it that warm, cozy, secure feeling. The interiors are not for me. I like a nice open floor plan. I have seen some of these Federals opened up after a remodel and they look better. And, I really like how you used 6889 Dume Dr for the view scene. IMHO, this property has a lot of nice architectural elements. I really like how they lined the pool up with that valley view out to the ocean. Excellent video! Thank you!!

It's mainly because for many people, the Georgian colonial style is the perfect house style. For starters, houses made of bricks or stone (or at least having the appearance of being made of those materials) give a greater feeling of protection. Like a medieval castle, brick and stone houses have this protective vibe to them, like the masonry is gonna keep the occupants safe from storms and attempted break-ins, and it speaks to the most fundamental purpose of a house, which is shelter.
Georgian colonial style homes also tend to look stately and imposing, which gives a somewhat aristocratic feeling. Even though the United States was founded to get away from royalty and aristocracy, there's still this innate desire many people harbor to live like nobility. Part of what makes a Georgian colonial style house look so imposing and majestic is the fact that houses in this style tend to be two or three storey, the extra height does help do the trick, as does the Greek style detailing many dwellings of this style have!
Then there's the symmetry of this architectural style, most are drawn to symmetry, especially that of the "golden ratio" that sets a benchmark standard for beauty. The symmetry often continues inside as most Georgian colonial style houses follow a central hall layout in which a wide hallway is flanked by an equal number of rooms each side, and this layout is typically on both or all floors (though if the house possesses a third floor, this level is almost always a finished walk up attic, thus the slope of two of the walls, which also make up the ceiling for this level, usually means not as many rooms can fit on the third storey as can fit on the first or second floor, thus in Georgian colonial houses that have four rooms on each of the main two floors, the third floor will usually have just two rooms, in addition to the corridor for the level). Now, in newer Georgian style houses, the main floor will typically be an open or semi open version of the central hall layout, with the main daytime living spaces distinguished by columns and the like but otherwise open plan, thus catering to modern lifestyles.
Basements are yet another appealing feature of this style. Basements are so darn versatile and most Georgian colonial style homes have them, at least in locales where the geology allows for relatively easy underground construction and where subterranean levels have as little risk of flooding as possible (which matches the Midwest US, where the Home Alone house is located, quite well). Even though the Home Alone house (at least in the movie) only uses the basement as storage and the laundry room, some owners of Georgian style houses have converted the basement into all sorts of living spaces, especially recreational areas (theatres, game rooms, indoor sports areas, bowling alleys in some cases, etc. Basements of such houses have also been converted to bedrooms and even entire apartments - especially great for extended family desiring extra privacy, or boarders to rent rooms or the apartment to help subsidize the mortgage and property taxes.

For me it’s the symmetry, the windows and also the simple, yet well crafted, details such as the trim work in and out. I’ve lived in old houses my whole life and couldn’t imagine living in a new home. Newer homes are just too cold and lifeless for me. Even when newer houses add detail, the detail seems fake since they are not made with the same materials as old homes. I know people like open homes today, but I’m the opposite and like a more closed off floor plan. I like the privacy, coziness, and warmth of more enclosed spaces. Kitchen can be open to a family room if there is one, but I like separate formal living and dining rooms that don’t view the kitchen. Also I prefer the closed off entryway too. When people come by my house, I don’t want them to see my whole house from the entry. There is no privacy or coziness in that. I like my home to be for me, not open for everyone like a business. If a family is living in that house like real people do, you wouldn’t want someone entering the house to see people in the back watching tv or cooking. Big open homes are for showing off, not for actual family living.

I love this channel! I watch UA-cam instead of TV. This channel has become a huge favourite because of great content and it is entertaining. I also learn much and since I have always been "crazy" about architecture and design, I was extra happy about this episode. 😊
Arvin of course knows a lot about the different eras of architecture for his profession. So, Arvin, would it be possible to get more videos about that topic? 🙏
Comparing the different styles, showing the details that separate eras and like you did here, show floor plans.
Thank you for your superb videos! 🎉

I grew up down the street…..the amount of fans that still stop by is crazy. The house just sold for 5.25 million which is crazy becuase it was sold in 2012 for 1.5. But apparently the new owners gutted it and did a good job. Ohhhh it has a basket ball court. The house in the movie was way smaller inside.

I really like what you have to say about how important it is to consider the golden ration in the proportions and dynamics of the architecture and design of a house! However, I personally don't find this house very interesting. Lacks a bit of originality, it's a bit anonymous, something one would see in a posh Washington DC neighborhood, like Georgetown or something.😴
I personally am more interested in modern design, like those futuristic mansions on cliffs in LA. 😊

Totally understand. I think modern is more fun because it allows for more creative crazy ideas, granted they may not hold the test of time and what looks cool today may look passe' in the future. My ideal home would be modern on a cliff overlooking the city. Paul Mclean perhaps? But not the 20000 square foot museum size things.@@ArvinHaddadOfficial

    • @rafs6052
      @rafs6052 3 місяці тому

@@ArvinHaddadOfficial just because it's symmetrical and you like its proportions doesn't mean it has the golden ratio. GR is a very specific 1:1.618..., this house is much more elongated, there is no GR anywhere in that facade. GR is not just a "oh thats a nice ratio of height to width", its precisely 1:1.618...and this house doesn't have that ratio.
And to add, this idea that GR is some kind of magical proportion that gives harmony and beauty and that is found everywhere in nature is completely debunked. The GR is ancient pseudo science and mysticism crap in par with using leaches as medicine.

AAAH, so THATS your lego house? Now I see it :)
The house "style/architecture" is extremely individual, not all like it. What made it so nice was the "family" theme. Kids watching the movie think maaan I want a family/home like this and grownups watching it think maaan I always wanted my childhood to be like this, it even has a tree house and who doesnt want or wanted their own cozy treehouse?
Take the attic, how many real life attics are kids hideout dens with a bed in them?
The finishes are as said, very individual taste. There is a reason all new mansions sell looking like bleach white empty boring canvasses on the inside.
The exteriors too are very specific. Imagine you live in the typical UK street home, you are so fed up by looking at red bricks that this detail alone would scare you away.
The home-alone facade to me personally scream Oh Oh, I look at the facade and wonder, is the inside as "old" to with gramps wallpapers and dusty finishings from the 40ies?
The best would be modern somewhat minimalistic finishings internally but thats just me. Tastes are like asses, everyones got one.
The house is "flat", no porches, no large balconies to open up and sit on when its warm outside, just a flat, abrupt border between facade and street or tiny lawn.
Compare to the "ibiza breeze" house in zagaleta, what a mansion and also what a blunder having it end so abruptly with the lawn.
I agree on your take on the internal design, there is no flow nor views, just room to room compartmentalization.
Owning such a home would call for a structural engineer lookover and possible internal walls being knocked out for that grand center main "room/space" that flows towards a kitchen and other areas.
Many of my friends absolutely love this kind of home-alone house style, I dont, Im more the modern non-white-box type where cozy nooks and things are happening everywhere and internal finishes are all textures and play with white and dark earthy stone.
Cool video though, I like how you researched all this and memories of the movie surfaced and I love the architect lesson in this video! Very well done!
The best vids are where you actually walk away afterwards with increased levels of knowledge!

My take on this particular house was the lack of amenities such as saunas, ergo: my thought was is there room for development on the property should the owner want to install a standalone gym with saunas in a corner AND have those addons also work as part of a firewall.
Relating for homes in Malibu my foremost question is always, is there room to build a firewall around the property and is it touching a wide road on one side that also acts as a firewall.
Good job on this vid man!
