    “The worst part about having mental illness is people expect you to behave as if you don’t:)” struck me when I first saw this for some reason

    I've always said that the best villains are the ones with a good backstory and you understand their motivation. Joker really needed a backstory, and this movie provided it.

    • @HonkHonkler
      @HonkHonkler Рік тому +3

      This is a great film, but Joker didn't need an origin. The canonical joker doesn't have one. This film and other adaptations where he might have one is just a fun way of CREATING a origin for this unique villain of chaos.

      I don't understand why but some people seem to just stop at the "Joker" part, as if this movie only talks about his story, while completely ignoring the fact that this movie potrais brilliantly depression, abuse, mistreatment, suicide and the suffering of someone who goes trhough this things, and this ISN'T just a detail, it isn't a detail of the Joker's story, for someone who has proven all those things, it's the first thing we note, and it's so perfect on such a deep level for a LOT of people, I don't consider this a "JOKER" movie, the DC world it's used to build a vision wicht would be so incredibly hard to represent only in our world, instead, using other characters, they were able to go all in and not have to limit themselfs. Many people miss this, I don't know if its because they have never proven such things before or if for something else.

      @@alexvonrom7942 I wasn't downplaying the major themes of this movie simply because I didn't mention them. Included in talking about a good backstory and understanding motivation is precisely the parts that make him human, and precisely for this that I say it. As for Joker, it is the name of the film. It's a little pretentious of you to attack me for using the name of the film. In addition to being a film about abuse, depression, mental illness, yes, it is *also* a film about The Joker. Whether you want to acknowledge that or not is irrelevant to this fact.

    This movie frightened me. Not in the traditional sense of jump scares or psychological horror. In the sense that it felt... real. Joker is a warning. It warns us to be careful how we treat people. Every single person that you come across has the potential to become evil if pushed too far. Arthur Fleck's story could have come to a very different ending under the right circumstances. If people had treated him differently, he might not have snapped. There is a reason why people do bad things. You don't have to be born evil. Sometimes good people can turn evil after being introduced to something devastating or being mistreated for too long. We're all just a small chain of events away from reaching the point of no return.

    Just to clear things up, this is NOT the canonical backstory for the comic character _Joker_ in Batman the comics. This is ONE possible origin for him based off the famous comic _The Killing Joke_ that gives joker a possible origin. This film also takes inspiration form Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver & King of Comedy (both with Robert De Niro as the lead) and directing style. The CANONICAL origin for the Joker is that he doesn't have one. He doesn't have a name, he doesn't have any origin, no one knows him etc. He just showed up in Gotham one day to be Batman's greatest psychology arch-enemy. This film is fantastic, but don't take this to be an introduction to the Batman pantheon, in fact don't take most Batman media as an introduction to the world of Batman. His pantheon is by far one of the most flexibly adapted of all time across TV, Film, Comic, Cartoon & Video Games. There's always key things that stay the same, but certain origins for characters or how they come to meet/know Bruce Wayne/Batman is different sometimes. All amazingly written (except Gotham High, that's pure cancer), but different in their own ways. Take this film as one.

    Hey Tay. Maybe now you already know or saw the full sentence Arthur wrote in his journal. But in case not, what he wrote was: ‘The worst part about having a mental illness is people expect you to behave as if you don’t’
    Also, his dancing at random times, in my opinion, aren’t random at all, in the sense that, I think, they happen for a reason. We saw him do that dance before and during times he feels he’s powerful, fulfilled and happy.

    • @Tee_Jay88
      @Tee_Jay88 Рік тому +1

      He dances after every kill in the movie. Even after the Waynes get shot. That how you know Sofie is still alive. He didn't dance after leaving her apartment.

    (Not so much a spoiler, more of a subtle detail)
    Fun fact: During the "Joker and Harley Show" daydream scene in Folie a Deux, you can hear Arthur's same "YEAHHHHHHHH!" from the audience when Lee says, "Lets give the people what they want."
    Gave the idea that he's cheering himself on as he watches his own show in his mind.

    Basically the story is about this man named Arthur, who lives alone with his mother. He was treated very badly by society. All Arthur ever wanted was to be loved but unfortunately it was too much to ask. So then the joker was born. And at the end of the movie, there is no more Arthur. Now it is just Joker. Next year there will be a Joker 2 which I'm actually very excited until it comes out

    I wanted to watch it because it was about one if not the most iconic villain of all times but after finishing it, for me at least, the 'joker' part represented only 5% of the entire movie.
    The filming, the subjects, the layers, the acting, the results of pathological and psychological trauma, the society's indifference, domestic abuse, personality disorder, disassociation, easily one of the best movies i have ever watched, it might actually be the best now that i think about it.

    Amazing film and incredible performance by Phoenix! This film was nominated 11 Oscars (making it the most Oscar nominated comic book movie ever) winning in two major categories, best actor and best original score. Joaquin won every award he was nominated for including Hildur Guðnadóttir (the composer for the film). Joker is the first R-rated movie to make $1 billion at the box office and it is the most profitable comic book movie of all time. I first saw Joker on IMAX the day of its release.. by far one of the best and most wicked experiences I ever had 🃏

    The stretching/posing doesn't happen at random times, they happen after a significant moment in his life(when he kills) and its him evolving into the next higher level.....its like he is melting out of his former skin and into a new one
    Also, every clock shown has the same time on it as the clock in the mental hospital he was locked in....so the backstory is all just in his mind probably....he is an unreliable narrator so you cant assume anything is real

    The age thing bothered me. Perhaps this Joker will inspire someone else to take up the mantle in later years. The other issue I had is the Joker is typically a criminal mastermind capable of baffling Batman and make him go through lots of puzzles and mysteries to unveil the ultimate caper. But, this Joker doesn’t seem that smart, not even necessarily street smart.
