I'm not sure if it's been mentioned elsewhere in the comments but as an American gun owner I wanted to give a little info from south of your border.
In the subway when he shot those 3 guys, the first 2 were self defense and those 2 deserved what happened to them. In most of America if the joker stopped there it would have been self defense open and shut case.
The third one after fleeing and being pursued and shot was definitely a straight up murder even by American legal standards.

As a viewer, you should just get this and understand it, and then because of that people will feel bad for joker. This movie isn't as great as people make it out to be. • @gwp4eva

IMO the first two guys he killed, he was justified in doing so. They were beating him and showed no signs of letting up, so self defense was warranted. This is partly what confuses Arthur so much about the situation and the reaction to it; he was the real victim yet society was portraying the killer as the villain without knowing the circumstances of what transpired. Of course, the third man was running away, so that was murder, even if Arthur didn't see it as such

    • @JakkFrost1
      @JakkFrost1 3 роки тому +18

Sure, the third one is murder, but at the same time, Arthur was still in the kill or be killed frame of mind, brought on by fight-or-flight mode, which doesn't just "end" all of a sudden, nor can it be turned off like a light switch.

To paraphrase the Joker "Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another. If i'm going to have a backstory I prefer it to be multiple choice". Which is why Heath Ledger's Joker with the multiple backstories works so well, for comic book fans.
In the 1989 Batman film (Michael Keaton Batman) Joker kills Thomas and Martha Wayne and creates Batman. Then Batman accidentally drops Joker in acid creating the Joker. So, they create each other. As you predicted for this movie. In most forms of media the criminal who kills the Waynes is called Joe Chill.
The Joker's real name in our universe is BELIEVED to be Jack Napier (rhymes with rapier). In an alternate universe his real name is Joe Kerr. In this movie I believe it is Arthur Fleck. Which may be a reference to Ben Affleck. who plays Batman in the DCEU/ Zack Snyder Movies. If anyone has any Questions feel free to ask!

They also reference the Valeska Twins who represent different aspects of The Joker on "Gotham" with one of the street names.Jerome represents the manic, fanatical, wisecracking, irreverent nihilism of The Joker and Jeremiah represents the cold, calculating, gangster Joker who is obsessed with Bruce Wayne,an obsession that is only enhanced when Bruce becomes Batman!

People who say the guys in the train didn't deserve to die or it was murder. I just wanna counter with: Are you any more normal or better if you're a grown man assaulting a girl and then after that a man dressed in clown clothing? My point is that these guys don't belong in the society any more or less than Arthur.

The bitter rage that he's been carrying around for decades is finally bubbling to the surface. Eyes watering, face shaking, voice cracking. He doesn't have to act "happy" or "normal" anymore, cause he knows what he's about to do, he knows he's embarking on a very dark chapter in his life. No point in acting any longer.

A fun Easter egg is that first scene when it zooms in on the back of his head while he’s putting on his makeup, if you notice the mirror, it looks like Batman.
Also, that first scene when he’s getting beat up and his hand is over his junk, I don’t think that he was “hit in his peanuts”. Considering how often he gets beat up in this movie, his messed up shoulders and ribs, and his abuse as a child, it means that beatdowns might be a weekly occurrence, and perhaps he’s learned to cover his fishing tackle and vital organs to keep it from getting hit.

You guys talk a little trash about him shooting those guys on the subway. Only one of those guys was murdered, the other two were killed in self defense. The bottom line is this: The first punch that hit Arthur Fleck was enough to knock him unconscious, his head hitting the ground that hard would probably be a concussion all in all. Then you have the kicking, a broken rib can easily become jagged and puncture an organ such as your heart and lungs. Now, let's say at this point he doesn't shoot, they keep kicking, they start kicking his head. Arthur is knocked unconscious again, his brain hemorrhages from the trauma. The subway car is now empty except for Arthur, no gunshots were fired so no one heard it. Arthur lays there for 30 minutes while his body struggles to stay alive for just one minute...but no one comes and the guys that beat him up are long gone, having some more drinks. Arthur dies. That's not even worst case scenario as far as body trauma. But yeah, if he didn't shoot, he might've died for sure. Those guys weren't playing, they were drunk and relentless.

This is not Joker's Origin Story. This is the Origin story that the Joker made up as an excuse for his actions. He was in the psychiatric ward from the beginning of the film and told the psychiatrist what we saw here. Until he broke out in the end. He never had a girlfriend, his father wasn't Thomas Wayne, and he never appeared on TV. He was never ambushed or beaten up. None of what we saw was real. Everything brain-crazy or the perfidious game with the psychiatrist.

Oh my dears, you're reaction seems like it was exactly like mine the first time I saw it. I cried throughout, off & on. It was such an epic, absolutely phenomenal movie. Taking a comic book character and making him real and feel empathy and love and caring for him was so amazing. It took me awhile and watching it a few more times, to let it all sink in and wrap my head around it all. I absolutely loved it!!!! 😍❤👍💛👏👏👏👏👏 Joaquin winning the Oscar was SO well deserved! His performance and the music and directing and cinematography and lighting was just all spot on and sent chills down my spine and goosebumps on my skin, even when I just saw the trailers of this. I think it touches so many of us, as you said too, bcs there are these issues and problems going on in our world & societies, esp where mental illness or poverty or even bullying etc... Gets swept under the rug and not dealt with properly and there's never enough funding from Govts to help those who most need it. So we end up with all these mass shootings going on and homelessness is rampant in the mentally ill community. It's a disgrace and I'm so thankful this movie was made to put a spotlight on it, using Joker. Cuz it reached millions more then if it was just a movie about a man with mental illness. Of course he suffered from many issues, childhood PTSD, his laughing disorder, he naturally would be narcissistic (since his Mother was, and he had all his grandiose delusions). So basically he started out a good person, but his childhood and society turned him into a serial killer who finally felt like he mattered and had numbed his truest nature of goodness. It's a heart breaking yet truly beautiful movie to watch. Even the ending, you were like me, almost feeling bad for smiling and cheering on the chaos ... Yet I don't think any of us should feel bad. Cuz I think so many of us kinda related. Maybe some moreso. Even tho we don't condone violence.. It just seems like redemption for him. And it does make you smile. ☺ Peace and wellness to you both. Thank you for sharing, I really enjoyed it and hope you read this. 🤗
Edit add-on: I think we get to see how serial killers, mass shooters, etc become what they are... They can't handle the craziness and want to end it all. So they hurt others bcs they hurt, and then they get caught and consequences. It doesn't make what they do ok, never, but this movie so eloquently shows perhaps the process of creating a madman. Taking a tiny soul, child and putting them in a violent, neglectful childhood then sending them into a cruel world where they are bullied and perhaps can't cope or associate. It's really a dreadful synopsis of events that lead people to these deeds and actions. I, along with millions, was cheering Arthur on! Would I cheer on a mass shooter or serial killer in real life... No! But this movie just helped us understand those who suffer, truly suffer with conditions out of their control and have empathy and yes, give a cheer when they get a bit of redemption. Ok.. I'm off my soapbox lol 😄 Lastly, Joaquin Phoenix is a truly exceptional actor, beyond any other actor imo... His other performances have all been amazing but this was phenomenal ❤ Btw, I enjoyed the whole Wayne being his Dad and perhaps the documents at the hospital were faked to keep Wayne's nose clean, and so Arthur and Bruce are really half-brothers. And then the ending being that it wasn't Joker who killed them but one of his fandom, cuz the only Batman movie I like is with Michael Keaton and that's exactly what they show, his parents being killed in front of him in a back alley by an unknown suspect. Brings it all together to me at least. ☺

My own three possible interpretations of the ending.
    1) The story happened in a way we saw on screen for most of the time. Arthur Fleck became the Joker through the series of those events.
    2) Arthur Fleck never actually became the Joker and he spent entire time in the asylum. What we see unfold on screen were his delusional thoughts.
    3) The man we see at the end in asylum is the Joker and he just came up with yet another fabricated story about his background a.k.a "something funny". He's never outright called Arthur there so "Arthur Fleck" was just an identity he fabricated.
Of course the director outright said that the movie is purposely made in a way that you can interpret things the way you want and thay there's no definite answer to what actually happened.

True, Riddler presented the one in The Killing Joke, and Riddler always knows more about Gotham's characters than just about anyone else, but Joker himself never confirmed it as he prefers the ambiguity. And in the final analysis, how Joker bacame what he is is unimportant, even to himself. Basically every other character in Gotham is obsessed with how they started out, but Joker is not.

Your reaction when the little guy was in his apartment was mine. I was like "don't kill him, he was nice with you" it was full of tension and suspense.
It was amazing how the screenwriters made us believe that "relationship" between him and the neighbor.

Joker (2019) for me is one of the most unique comic book movies ever made because it subverts everything we think and expect from one, for me it isn’t the story of THE Joker it’s the story of A Joker, the Joker doesn’t have to be just a typical and by the numbers character that has to be portrayed, written or directed completely accurately to his original source material he’s an idea and can be absolutely anyone, from the person down the street to a stranger in another country absolutely anyone can be the clown prince of crime and that’s what makes his ideology fundamentally horrific and terrifying

Yeah, people had mixed reactions about this movie mentioning/showing a tiny bit of Bruce Wayne and the alleyway part, but I personally think it's fine they did it (even though it would've been fine without it) because you can't have Joker without a slight mention/cameo of Bruce. The two go hand in hand anyway, so I thought it was fine. So I think it was a nice twist and tie-in how Joker started a movement (unintentionally) and that movement eventaully lead to Bruce's parents' murder.
