- Tony Hancock was buried in Cranford near London. Tony had a major success with his BBC series Hancock's Half Hour, in which he soon formed a strong professional and personal bond with comic actor Sid James. One of his best-remembered works includes "The Blood Donor" and "The Radio Ham. His scriptwriters were Ray Galton and Alan Simpson.
Hancock took his own life by overdosing, in Sydney, on 25 June 1968, aged 44. He was found dead in his Bellevue Hill flat with an empty vodka bottle and a scattering of amylo-barbitone tablets.

My favourite programme was on the radio. A pilot takes off, not realising a mechanic is still sitting on top of the jet, just in front of the tail. The conersation between the two was hysterical when the mechanic tried to get in the cockpit in midair. Imagination is a wonderful gift so I could picture the whole thing. I laughed so much, my stomach hurt. Thank you for making us laugh, Tony, especially as your life was so full of tears. You truly were a King of Comedians.

The two things I took from this: Poor John Le Mesurier, because of how Hattie Jacques treated him as well. Also, I can't believe Hancock was just 44 when he passed.

John seems such a council. He never challenged anybody and did get some terrible treatment. You're right, but I think his nature was lovely from what I've read and Hancock just couldn't handle life. Thank you for the comment. Regards, Alan
Yeah, he was always nice to her up to the end but she really broke his heart and humiliated him. His restraint on "This Is Your Life" teibute to her was agonising to watch. You could almost see him matching time periods to affairs she had as they were mentioned.
Hattie Jacques Was a vile woman , my late aunt was an actress who worked in crossroads etc for many years and she always said Hattie Jacques was a brilliant actress, who mastered the art of presenting to be nice but behind closed doors was a vile monster.

I was surprised to know he was only 44 when he died, he looked so much older. I guess he suffered from a depressive illness, hence the lack of confidence. I hope he is at rest now. 💗🌻

A bit before my time too , though Mum and Dad used to talk about him . I've seen and heard repeats of his work . I find him a very depressive person 😔 . This is my least favourite vlog , Is he shoved in a back space in the graveyard because of the belief that taking one's own life was a sin in those days ? Not too many years before that people were not allowed to be buried inside the church boundaries.
IMO the sense of humour came from the writers, his career nosedived when he parted company with Galton & Simpson who continued to prosper.

Thanks Alan. What a tragic end to such a great talent. Kevin Mcnulty impersonated Tony Hancock . He recorded Tony Hancock the lost scripts. Give it a listen. He sounds just like Tony. I prefer the radio series. I always thought it was Kenneth Williams He didn't like working with. Because Kenneth seem to get more laughs ...It was nice Tony's ashes came back to England for internment. Thanks Tony. Bill. Hattie. Syd. Kenneth for Hancocks half hour. Such a laugh. It's nice that 50 odd years later we still laughing. And will continue to laugh for many years to come.

I visited this churchyard around 10 years ago but never found any marker. Have a lot of his albums and listen to him regularly on BBC Sounds reruns. Only one thing I found incorrect on this brilliant episode is that Willie Rushton was not Tony’s brother. He brought Tony’s ashes back from Australia. I assume they were friends back in the day.

Tony was very popular in the days I recall watching with my parents when we had the huge tv choice of just two channels, haha, but joking aside we absolutely loved Tony Hancock, and also Sid James but mainly watching just Tony's hours, and I so remember the Blood Donor, sad that he died so young and so unhappy, just awful sadly missed. He earned a lot of money in those days in comparison what people earned although by today's standards it sounded like very little earnings but it wasn't.

I’ve been there too, though you could drive down when I went. Strange place, little track straight off of a huge roundabout on the M4. Nice church though and surrounding buildings, and the high trees shield the road noise a bit.
I hope you looked at his plaque Yes it did, but when I went I drove down the little track and was totally immediately because of the building works. It's strange as I've got a big car park, but they won't let you stay even when there's nobody there ahaha

In actual fact Crystal, this was the most disturbing film that I ever did. You got to the cemetery through a very dark tunnel close to an estate which wasn't very nice + there was an unfortunate homeless person living in the graveyard under a tarpiling. The whole thing was scary ... But I'm glad I did the film. I'm pleased you enjoyed watching. Thank you, alan
Hi Alan… Yes, Tony Hancock was born very near to where I live, Southam Road in Hall Green. Like so many “comedians” his jocular, funny character and smile hid a myriad of self-doubting demons and profound misery. I believe that the hang-dog look he had was an insight into the man himself. In remembering his difficult periods, cruelty and alcoholism we should temper all of that with the happiness and laughter that he brought to post war Britain. The man is a legend in his own right. Thank you for your research and sensitive presentation.

Cranford Park and Church is a hugely historical place. Parts of the church dates back to the 14th century and well worth a look inside. Shame the park and stables are closed for renovation as they are fantastic. As a child I spent all my summer holidays in this park, its huge! I was married in this church and worshipped there regularly. My grandparents ashes are also interred there. It is a little creepy in the graveyard but I think that’s because of the age of it.
Hello Florence, I think it's also because you can't drive down to anymore. You've got to go under the subway from the estate. It just still seems a little bit weird. Kind of atmosphere but it didn't help with the guy on the bench. Sleep under some sacking. I think my mind just playing tricks with me but thank you for all the information. Regards, Alan

Alan I was only born a few years before he died but I have seen the episode of the blood donor and that is really funny. I did read that he killed himself in Sydney at a young age which is so very sad,maybe back then,they didn’t have psychological support,who knows. Thank you for doing a lovely report and I also remember the Lena Zavaroni one as that was just so sad.
Spooky old place thought Tony Hancock may have had a more substantial grave I looked out for the sleeping man on bench.but didn't see him bit disappointed.The video is excellent as per usual Alan top marks to you,

I do notice many comics have mental illness like manic depression. Spike Milligan and Robin Williams for example. Their comedic abilities seem to be part of their mad genius phase.

I used to live not far from Cranford and have seen the plaque which is on the wall at thr other end of the church. I think his mum is on it too if I recall correctly.

Hello Gill, yes I know what you mean. It's obviously when people are successful they get a lot more pressure from our directions so it is not surprising. Sometimes they crack more than they have a day person. I think it all depends on how they handle it as with everything in life, but definitely a success. Doesn't always mean happiness. the reason it might seem to be in a weird place is years ago if you took your own life you was buried right away from the church may be that's what happened with his ashes.

That's what I thought too, Diana. The plaque is impressive, but it seems it's out of the way and set on crumbling brickwork, which seems very sad. Thank you very much for this video. A good choice of backup videos. HHH is still brilliant. I went to see Galton and Simpson at an event about 20 years ago. Unassuming and humble men. The best comedy script writers.
You should visit the site of Cranford Hall which ain't far from the church, not much there accept a the old entrance and a ice house, whether it's still there is another thing as is a long time ago.

His radio show was the best. The tv show was good, but the radio shows before tv were his best. The truth is, greed of being famous got to him. He didn't like others getting a laugh. Personally I think Kenneth Williams could bury him alive when it came to talent. Hancock could only ever do Hancock, nothing else.
Tony ( to me ) is similar to Frankie Howard, absolutely brilliant at delivering lines but couldn’t write them. Kenneth was also in a similar vein, Peter Cook wrote one of his reviews & the success went to Kenneth’s head. When Peter was asked to write the follow up Kenneth turned the material down , one sketch being “a leg too few “ which Peter gave to Beyond the Fringe & was so popular it killed review & put Ken out
of stage work.
His birthplace is located near the watermill with the Tolkien connection.

There was a Hancock episode where Hancock forgot to cancel and arrived back home after a holiday to find a bread and milk mountain outside his front door. Hancock was a Poncinello (a right funny fellow).

Apparently Tony Hancock was studying comparative religions to try to understand why he was funny . A very sad man considering the joy he brought to so many people .

I don't live in a campervan. I bought one a year ago but I spend a lot of time in it because I like to do films but I live in Whitby and Bradford the rest of the time.
