When working at home it is a better idea to remove oil filler cap after drain plug.
And, you should NOT use too much force to tighten up a 17mm drain plug.
Tip #3, use absorbent material to get the dirty oil that is left in the oil filter housing.
Thanks for great tutorial how to change oil. Every time I have to change I watch this video to remind myself how to do it. tools etc. thumbs up!
Very helpful!! Great video :)
Nice job. I just ordered the oil change kits from FCP for my 2009 e90.
Great job 👍
good video my man
Thank you very much for the info was able to do the oil change successfully
You're welcome Shivendra
Great video which was very thorough. Hardest part of the job for me was finding a way to get the car jacked up and blocked for safety. I'm a fairly large fellow and it was a little claustrophobic under there! Also, the drain plug access panel was missing so I'll get one of those on order. Noticed quite a bit of oil on the undertrays so I assume I have an oil leak, possibly oil pan gasket. Is that a DIY project? Thanks again for taking the time to make these informative videos.
Great video..
Its a good idea to run the car engine warm so when you remove drain plug not only does the oil come out easier but it takes some of the lose particles with it. Some mechanics suggest pouring extra oil through to clear and scum or metal filings.
Captain Planet he's our hero, going to take pollution down to zero...
THANK YOU GOD BLESS YOU I HAVE SAME CAR 325I
Do you reset something in your dash display every time you change your oil?
Over on your Volvo blog, it says the following and I'm wondering if it applies to BMW filters as well:
"When changing the oil on the inline 6 cylinder, it is very important to remove the oil filter first before draining the oil. The oil filter housing on these engines are equipped with a spring loaded valve which is closed shut by the pressure of the oil filter element. What that does is to maintain a level of oil in the filter housing during engine operation and to ensure a fast rise of oil pressure during start-ups. Removing the filter first allows the dirty oil that is trapped in the oil filter housing to drain back down into the oil pan. "
You can crack it a bit to help it drain, it's not necessary and taking it all the way off will make a huge mess. It won't hurt, just can be tricky. Hope that helps.
Veljko Roškar
Yes, you need to unscrew the oil filter to drain the filter housing (it has anti-drain valve when in position). After that, drain the oil completely at the drain plug.
In this video, he first drained the oil and changed the filter after. So there is still 300-500 ml of old oil in there ;-)
FCP Euro
There should be no mess on these engines - unscrew the filter and let it sit unscrewed for minute or two - it all drains down to sump. Very clean.
Then drain the oil completely.
Do u have a video of rear differential pinion seal replacement?
hey , i wanna do thr oil change by my selft , but when i go to the dealer center , i have to tell them " i need a oild kit change " ???? like u said it
I LOVE ur videos u taught me so much about my 2008 BMW 328i automatic sedan..i have a short question..the rpms move a bit upon COLD start up only..then after a few minutes the car runs fine..NO CODES shown..any advice????we did smoke test and only showed injector seals leaking..replaced..still rpm go up and down ONLY at cold initial startup. THAN U KEEP UP THOSE GREAT VIDEOS ! THANK U!
Possible vacuum leak somewhere mine got like 5 different vacuum leaks and they don’t show any codes. also could be failing vanos Solenoids, or u may need a tune up, or failing coil, or even just old injectors they’re could be a lot of different reasons why. idk how much rpms exactly it’s jumping up but sometimes its normal for a lil bit of a rough idle on these engines and rpm jumping especially in cold weather but if it’s jumping past 1k then u probably got a problem somewhere.
I'm seeing some mechanics on UA-cam suggestion the use of a 5W-40 because of the heat the M52 engine produces. Should I consider that in summer if I don't plan on driving it in winter weather?
Great video, thank you for your help. Question - When you are changing your oil, how many liters do you put in .....i am assuming 6 liters - am i correct??
Hi Mark, the E90 takes about 6.9 liters of engine oil.
How would you then get rid of the service light after this?
Can I drain it with a single jack? Like will all the oil drain out if I only lift it from one side
ALSO can i use VALVOLINE 5-30 for my 2008 BMW 328i sedan?
What about fuel injector bmw e90 or e87 my friend?
Hi, excellent video, but you should correct the "88mm". It does not take a 88mm. It takes a 86mm.
Hello Josh, thanks for pointing that out. We'll look into getting that corrected.
Two years later... 🦗
88mm is the correct size, how do I know? I got a 86mm off eBay and it’s too tight to fit over the housing properly.
Are the 3/4 Liters used to "prefill" the oil filter housing an addition to the 7 liters needed to fill the engine on an 06 330i? Need to know ASAP! ANTICIPATED THANKS!
+Jegsnation No, the total fill is about 7 liters. I pre-fill the oil filter housing to ensure on start up that the engine gets instant oil pressure. It's a little easier on the oil pump because it doesn't have to force oil up to the filter housing immediately on start up. When doing an oil change you're going to add about 6.5 liters of oil and then top up as necessary once the engine reaches operating temperature.
Good video Thanks however I cant seem to find a 88mm 16 flute filter cap remover only 88mm 15, could you confirm please. Thank you
+Jose Camey Despite what was said in the video it's actually an 86mm, 16 flat socket that's required. It can be found here:

+FCP Euro Thanks appreciate it
What are the BMW recommended torque tensions for the oil plug and oil filter cap?
25nm~18ft/lbs for both
Very helpful tired of getting conned with 150 oil changes that take 30 min lol.
+Dominic Spriggs i know what you mean, but they do include the oil and filter, but still way over priced.
+supra2k8 yeah but now I know how easy it is i can do it myself
@@mrm3686 FCP Euro offers student discounts?
@@562Ramo Yes they do I bought the Fan aux lower hose sensor for a great price considering dealer 40-50$for the part which is really small and made of plastic. I got for 14$ which is Great and i always do DIY and great experience.
@@mrm3686 sweet. I'm gonna check that out
I have 07 323i n52 engine and it burns oil like crazy. 1qrt every 800 miles. I am using Castrol edge 5w30. Do you think this would help in terms of oil consumption better than Liquid Moly 5w30? Thank you
Hi Firas, that is a lot of oil consumption. I would try Liqui Moly Oil Saver additive: www.fcpeuro.com/products/lubro-moly-engine-oil-additive-lm2020
This might help but ultimately you need to diagnose the cause of your high oil consumption. I would recommend doing a compression and or leak-down test on your engine.
Did this job over the weekend. When I removed the oil filter cap oil spilled out everywhere. Clearly I was not expecting that otherwise I would shielded the immediate area with some rags. It was a real PITA to clean the engine as best I could afterwards. Perhaps I didn't let the engine cool enough?
In my experience - drain the oil first, let the car sit draining for 5 minutes before opening the oil filter housing to let some of the oil pressure release. Then SLOWLY open the filter housing, and as soon as you see the rubber gasket wait another couple of minutes before undoing the housing completely. This will release the air lock and allow the oil to run down the filter so it doesn't spill all over your engine (certainly had that happen before too). Best of luck!
so can i run regular oil since its thicker? or should i run thicker synthetic oil with like a engine stabalizer?
Hello, it's recommended to stick with the synthetic oil if that's what you've been using. A thicker weight synthetic oil may help with the ticking sound.
What's the capacity,, of oil,,for the 3.0 Lt,, of the engine,,& grade recommended,, for the 2006 BMW 325xi
A little less than 7 liters. I recommend running Liqui Moly 5W-40 engine oil.
www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-oil-change-kit-5w40-e60-e90-e82-f30-11427566327kt-lm
Make sure you know the amount of oil required
Perhaps you should show how to get the engine oil level
LOVE the priming - Ive just learnt something!!

What's the name of the tool you used to remove the oil filter housing?
britishighcommission Oil filter cap wrench/socket, there's a link to purchase it in the description of this video. Hope that helps.
hello i have a question i have a 06 bmw 325xi and it has a ticking noise its anoying i was wondering if i can put thicker oil will it stop? or can i put regular oil since its thicker than synthetic? just the ticking is geting to me fast. thank you
Hello Jesus, It's most likely coming from the lifters it's possible that running a heavier oil might help with the ticking sound.
They all make that noise until it gets warm
no torque settings and torque wrench for sump plug and filter housing?
Honestly, torque specs aren't critical on these guys, just make sure they're snug. But if you'd like the torque specs I could look them up for you. Let me know if you need them.
25Nm (18.44 Ft. lbs) is what I found
1> remove oil filler cap and pull the oil filter housing 2> no need to pour any oil into the oil filter housing, whilst it does NOT hurt, it has no effect whatsoever
need help on how to change the driver door lock actuator
Hello Tony, please feel free to email us at products@fcpeuro.com including the year, make and model of your BMW. We'll be happy to help you out.
where exctly does that big black oring go? On very bototm (last groove)?
Hi Gail, the cap has a specific groove cut into it for the seal, not quite at the very bottom of the lip, but a hair above it.
@@fcpeuro wow i bet alot of people dont know that u would automatically think it goes on all the way to bottom of cap..thanks ! GREAT VIDEOS!
What did you spray @ 2:48? and why? thanks
+brianwong0722 Brake cleaner to remove gunk from the oil filter cap.
That old oil filter wasn't a Mann. That's why it looked terrible. It doesn't hold up as good as the Mann
so for n52 totally is 7liters right?
N52 engine oil capacity is 6.9 Liters. You can find more E9X specs and information here: info.fcpeuro.com/bmw-e9x
@4:14 maybe the reason for the thumbs down, but you do NOT need to prefill the oil filter housing, no need to, it drians right into the sump, does NOTHING, does not damage anything by doing this.. but not necessary
how many liters or quartz to put on my bmw 328i 2008 sedan?
Your 328i will take between 6.5 to 6.9 quarts of oil.
thank you
You're welcome!
so how many liters in total do you use on the e90? 5?
+Luis Franco This car ended up taking all 7 liters of oil until full. Generally, on a N51, N52, or N52N 6 cylinder engine you will add 6.5 liters of oil, run the engine until warm, use the digital dipstick to measure the oil level, and add more oil as needed. 7 liters is the absolute most this engine will take and is usually what you will see on a "dry fill". We let this engine drain for some time to the point where the sump was virtually empty. On a quick oil change it will usually take 6.5 liters of oil.
my e90 N54 335i takes 7 QUARTS exactly on every change when well drained.
7 quarts = 6.6 litres
need help how to change fount bearings own a bmw325xi please help
+Cherie Stone Removing a front wheel bearing on an all wheel drive BMW is an involved process. The axle will need to be removed, you will need a hub puller of some kind to remove the wheel hub, and a bearing press kit in order to remove the wheel bearing. We don't have a video showing how to do this but it is beyond basic hand tools to do the repair. By the time you buy the special tools required to do the job it's usually more cost effective to pay a shop to do the job.
FCP Euro come to find out it's the transmission that's broke.but thanks for getting back with me. Defferential
Two errors. Overtorqued the drain bolt. Also, oil poured into the filter housing just drains into the sump. The centerpost of the cover has an o-ring on the end to close this off. It's supposed to drain to the sump as you unscrew the cover, otherwise there'd be a big mess to clean up. LOL
How much oil does the BMW uses over all?
+Darryl Mark It depends on what model specifically. Generally most 6 cylinder engines take 6.5-7 liters and most V8 models take about 8 liters. If you tell me exactly what model you have I can tell you for certain how much oil it needs.
2006 325i
6.9 quarts for the N52 engine. If you were using the method above (where it looks like 0.5 quarts are poured into the sump, add about 6 quarts, follow the instructions as mentioned, then go into the oil info screen and check the levels since of course, it doesn't have a dipstick anymore. In case you already got the answer, this is for others who might see this video and might be wondering.
HOW MANY GALLON LITERS QUARTS DO I NEED TO FILL MY 2006 BMW 325 XI 4 DOOR COUPE
Hi Jay, that's 7 liters you'll need for that oil change.
FCP Euro thank you very much
+FCP Euro i took my car to get an oil change one time to the dealer, and they put 6.5L on a 2006 330xi is there a difference between the 325xi and 330xi or did they put 0.5 L less?
+supra2k8 Technically speaking the initial oil fill should start at 6.5 liters. At that point you check the dipstick (if your BMW has one) and add as needed. Generally speaking, you will be using close to 7 liters of oil to completely fill the engine.
FCP Euro alright, thank you
Hey man I'm not trying to bag on you for trying to help out but you missed several steps some of them actually quite important I'll just leave it at that I think you know what they are your hint for the day is torque specifications. And for God's sake zip up your fly. That may have been a little too simple most people are going to strip their oil drain plug right off if they have no idea what a torque wrench is
this is textbook, why the thumbs down, seriously I think people should not be allowed to thumbs down a video without leaving a comment
He didn't spray the door with break cleaner
My mann filter never looks like that. Even at 7000 miles.
That was either the wrong filter or was improperly installed prior, I have seen them come out all crushed like that before. They also usually make a weird sound when it happens. I would not want mine to look like that either...
PS. 185,000 miles on engine,,
what a stuuupid drain plug cover
Spawn223311 at least car is nicely skid plated..
Why is it stupid?
Too easy, but all the car needs is a dip stick
Bob S 535 no,it doesn't.Thats old tech.
Did anyone already mention that this is the sloppiest oil change they've ever seen? If so, I apologize. Confused? Allow me to expound:
• Doesn't remove oil plug access flap (OPAF) during drain
• Uses non-disposable, permeable gloves to remove drain plug
• Doesn't wipe oil from around drain plug (and OPAF), instead cleaning only the former WITH BRAKE CLEANER
• "Does anyone here have a torque wrench? No? Cool."
• Didn't remove oil filter/cap before replacing drain plug...?
• Once again, using brake cleaner willy-nilly to clean plastic parts that could be easily wiped
• Let's use the dirty oil to lube the o-rings!
• Let's dip our bare hands into used oil while lubing the o-rings
• Doesn't bother to empty the oil filter housing of its dirty oil pool
#notmycircus #notmycar
What really shocked me : bare hands with used oil. Best way to develop skin cancer.....
