  • This one could get EXPENSIVE.
This 2014 BMW X3 2.0L Twin Power Turbo has been going into "reduced power" mode due to a problem with the Electronic Wastegate Actuator.
There is no available information from BMW to troubleshoot these codes, so let's take the logical approach and pinpoint the root cause before loading up the parts sniper rifle :)

Let me put your thoughts at ease. I can not thank this guy enough for this video. I've had this exact issue on my car and I been up and down the country paid one bmw dealership for 3hr to run diagnostics on the car at a cost of £450 took them 3 hr to find the fault (so they said) quoted me over 4000 for the replacement of the low pressure turbo. That's one bmw took it to the next one 2 hr of checking! This place works quicker than the last one highly recommend them, (NOT)£300 later quoted me over 6000 for both turbos to be changed. At this point I give up drove the car for over a year until I come across this video. We need more people like you in the world God bless and keep up the good work. Fixed it for free thanks to you.

did you use the computer/adjustment stuff or did you just tighen the actuator? because i dont have any of the expensive stuff he's using to do the adjustments but I do have an arm, and some tools. If I just tighten that will it be okay? or will my car just fall apart for some god damn reason?

Try loosening the 10mm lock nut, rotate what he did 3 times and tightening lock nut back up. Won’t hurt anything. If not find someone with ista. It’s free to download but big and you need an enet cable.

Thank you so much for this post. I also went to my dealer. Took them 1,5 hours to come back and tell me, that they have to take out the engine and replace the wiring harness. Cost: 4000€ 🤦‍♂ How is this legal??? I mean, probably afterwards the some problem would still exist 😤 Really, can't thank you enough! 🙏

BMW engines are noted for self destruction right after warranty. Cheap insurance calls for changing oil and filter at 2X the BMW recommended rate. I wonder if changing the oil every 7,500 Km (5,000 mi) and using cheap oil works to this end. If it was my car, I'd use the good stuff.

Now you did it, you knocked the BMW dealer out of a bunch of money. Just think as soon as the diagnostics came back with a fault code the new part would go on and the adjustment would have been made and the customer would see a new part and no more problems and that would be that. The customer gets a bill for 2k the part that is still good goes to the landfill and the replacement part probably won't last as long as the one that is on there now will last. Good job on using the dianostic tools and caring enough to do the job right and take care of the customer.

The buried component in witch touching the component is a challenge, we didn't see the wiring of the connector but that task probably would be too much for me. I suspect the owner is a customer for life, tough that means you have to endlessly work on a falling apart BMW with 80K and beyond miles. At what point does he tell the owner after a fix to dump the car because this car is not a reliable daily driver.

Just wanted to say thanks! Was looking on how to do EWG adjustments and replace actuator on my 2013 f34 328ix , since at first i thought the problem is with faulty actuator, but watching the video realised that I have exactly the same issue just to a little less extent since I only get it after long driving and doing ignition off / on within a short timeframe, if it stays over night at the morning it dissapears. And I dont actually need to replace the actuator
I dont have access to Launch or ISTA so I decided to blindly adjust it, I did 3 turns, because as I said my issue is less severe. Drive train malfunction gone, everything works good so far after 2 test drives.

Love your chill explanation and easy thinking. Step by step, not shooting parts. You were asking yourself the strategy about closing the waste gate valve on idle. When on idle the next thing is driving, so turboboost is needed. The turbo is already in this position so it does not have to react on throttle but is already there. The airflow on idle is low, so turboboost or speed is never exceeded. All safe but ready to fire up! Keep up the good work!

Ivan, thank you very much for this video. Just got my X3 imported from the USA and it was having the exact same problem. I believe they throw it away because of this! After scanning the car and saw those electric wastegate leaning position out outside tolerance remembered I've watched a video with you doing exactly the same thing and came here for reference again. Problem fixed for now until the wastegate valve completely dies :D Keep up the good work! Thanks you!

Thanks so much for this video! Been dealing with drivetrain malfunction on/off for about 6 months now. I took my car into shop couple months ago for this same turbo related drivetrain malfunction code. They said they would try a new battery to see if it would get the code to go away. (Didn’t make much sense to me how a battery could fix loud turbo rattle) They said sometimes a uncoded battery could cause the drivetrain malfunction. I said yeah let’s try it thinking that if it didn’t work they’d put old battery back in which was still new at the time. We’ll that didn’t fix the problem and they still charge me $500 bill total. Robbery. Thought I was doomed for new turbo. You helped me do this with one 10mm wrench in my driveway in 5 minutes thank you!

This is the first time I have ever seen a Hall effect sensor used to output a linear voltage. This requires 2 things in addition to the sensing element itself : the actuator rod must vary magnetic flux density with position and there must be an op amp inside the sensor/housing (actual Hall voltage is usually in mV).

Fabulous content! YOU SAVED ME HELLA A LOT OF MONEY. Alright here’s my experience, I have a 2013 Bmw 328i f30 with N20 engine with the exactly the same malfunction. Also I am a college student so I don’t have enough money to pay the dealership which they were asking about $4000-$5000 to change the whole turbo. Also I don’t have any expansive coding device, but I have a foxwell one which doesn’t do a whole lot. So I gave this a try, first I turned the nob twice for adjusting the linkage without any information and it cleared out the warning for me but wasn’t giving me enough power so I turned it again for one more turn and it got better. Hopefully the warning doesn’t come back!!!🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞

    • @B0RNfree
      @B0RNfree 2 роки тому

I don’t have any scan too neither, even if I did I probably won’t know how to use it. I’m going to try your method give it a 2 turns, add more turns if it needs it. Did the malfunction issue comeback, because the dealer is telling that the turbo has to be replaced over $4,000 for it.

Well I was just quoted $4500 for a new turbo. I found your video and adjusted the wastegate but only did three turns. Unfortunately I do not have the software to find the exact specs. Start of the car codes all went away car is running fine and the turbo is now working.

I don’t have a scanner neither to tell how much it is off. I’m going to turn it 1 at a time, test drive, and adjust turn again if needed. How is it holding up did the malfunction error came back?

Epic no parts required is correct! I would bet the stealership would said they replaced the whole motor. Then do the adjustment and charge the customer for N.E.W. part. I don't trust Express lube places for my HHR so I definitely wouldn't trust them with a BMW. Yeah to go Ivan!
