Let me put your thoughts at ease. I can not thank this guy enough for this video. I've had this exact issue on my car and I been up and down the country paid one bmw dealership for 3hr to run diagnostics on the car at a cost of £450 took them 3 hr to find the fault (so they said) quoted me over 4000 for the replacement of the low pressure turbo. That's one bmw took it to the next one 2 hr of checking! This place works quicker than the last one highly recommend them, (NOT)£300 later quoted me over 6000 for both turbos to be changed. At this point I give up drove the car for over a year until I come across this video. We need more people like you in the world God bless and keep up the good work. Fixed it for free thanks to you.

did you use the computer/adjustment stuff or did you just tighen the actuator? because i dont have any of the expensive stuff he's using to do the adjustments but I do have an arm, and some tools. If I just tighten that will it be okay? or will my car just fall apart for some god damn reason?

Try loosening the 10mm lock nut, rotate what he did 3 times and tightening lock nut back up. Won’t hurt anything. If not find someone with ista. It’s free to download but big and you need an enet cable.

Thank you so much for this post. I also went to my dealer. Took them 1,5 hours to come back and tell me, that they have to take out the engine and replace the wiring harness. Cost: 4000€ 🤦‍♂ How is this legal??? I mean, probably afterwards the some problem would still exist 😤 Really, can't thank you enough! 🙏

I’ve been having the same issues for the last 2 months and I’ve taken my car to bmw and a local bmw shop. I was told that I was gonna have to replace my whole turbo setup and I was quoted somewhere around 5k from bmw. This was the only vid I’ve found with the same issue I was having. I gave it a shot since I noticed my actuator linkage was a little loose and IT WORKED!!! You literally saved me $5000. Thank you!

Dealing with this now. Use ista to find what range you are in. I loosened the retaining nut. Turn the big tip of the actuator like he did 3.5 almost 4 turns and then tighten the bolt. Waiting to see if error comes back. If so you might have to tighten the actual bolt behind the retaining bolt the 4 turns the tighten it up.

Worked like a charm. I had the same engine, mileage, and error code on my BMW 428i (F36). Now you did it, you knocked the BMW dealer out of a bunch of money. Just think as soon as the diagnostics came back with a fault code the new part would go on and the adjustment would have been made and the customer would see a new part and no more problems and that would be that. The customer gets a bill for 2k the part that is still good goes to the landfill and the replacement part probably won't last as long as the one that is on there now will last. Good job on using the dianostic tools and caring enough to do the job right and take care of the customer.

BMW engines are noted for self destruction right after warranty. Cheap insurance calls for changing oil and filter at 2X the BMW recommended rate. I wonder if changing the oil every 7,500 Km (5,000 mi) and using cheap oil works to this end. If it was my car, I'd use the good stuff.

Love your chill explanation and easy thinking. Step by step, not shooting parts. You were asking yourself the strategy about closing the waste gate valve on idle. When on idle the next thing is driving, so turboboost is needed. The turbo is already in this position so it does not have to react on throttle but is already there. The airflow on idle is low, so turboboost or speed is never exceeded. All safe but ready to fire up! Keep up the good work!

Was looking on how to do EWG adjustments and replace actuator on my 2013 f34 328ix , since at first i thought the problem is with faulty actuator, but watching the video realised that I have exactly the same issue just to a little less extent since I only get it after long driving and doing ignition off / on within a short timeframe, if it stays over night at the morning it dissapears. And I dont actually need to replace the actuator
I dont have access to Launch or ISTA so I decided to blindly adjust it, I did 3 turns, because as I said my issue is less severe. Drive train malfunction gone, everything works good so far after 2 test drives.

I was able to use a scanner I already had, a Foxwell NT 510 Elite to get the wastegate readings and zero it out. Took me about an hour of fooling around a bit but in the end it got set to within the desired tolerance. I got the one specifically for BMW cars and it was $189, I used it for a 2006 Z4 previously when I changed out the auto trans fluid (needed to get the trans temp).
Great video, once again, thanks for showing us how it was done, I did find other info but this one was first and I was confident after watching this I could get this resolved (assuming the flap was not damaged or loose internally on the turbo).
My recommendation: don't tighten the nuts until you run the process enough times and get it zeroed out. I used small increments of turning the nuts until the scanner showed me it was within tolerance. First time, I went the wrong way. Second time I overshot, third time I was close, 4'th time I was right on. I can say that the electronic actuator is very picky and it does not normally take more than 1/2 to 3/4 turn of the nut to throw it out of tolerance.

Not just a "great repair," that's farquing awesome! Funny- wife was in St. Coll. yesterday when the issue arose! Had I known, would have sent her to you. However, given the precision of the system, and the fact you so carefully diagnosed 4 turns for repair at first sign of problem, I too will try 4 turns, and bet I can replicate the repair. Saved me unbelievable time, expense, confusion.

I saw this video and fixed my problem under 2 min.

    It now works great finally.

This is the first time I have ever seen a Hall effect sensor used to output a linear voltage. This requires 2 things in addition to the sensing element itself : the actuator rod must vary magnetic flux density with position and there must be an op amp inside the sensor/housing (actual Hall voltage is usually in mV).

Thanks so much for this video! Been dealing with drivetrain malfunction on/off for about 6 months now. I took my car into shop couple months ago for this same turbo related drivetrain malfunction code. They said they would try a new battery to see if it would get the code to go away. (Didn’t make much sense to me how a battery could fix loud turbo rattle) They said sometimes a uncoded battery could cause the drivetrain malfunction. I said yeah let’s try it thinking that if it didn’t work they’d put old battery back in which was still new at the time. We’ll that didn’t fix the problem and they still charge me $500 bill total. Robbery. Thought I was doomed for new turbo. You helped me do this with one 10mm wrench in my driveway in 5 minutes thank you!
