You don’t need to be a university scholar to understand and appreciate Mary Beard’s narrations. Her wandering off the main line frequently is a path to further information and discovery. Poor Caligula was raised in a violent time by an ambitious and war loving father and a cold power hungry mother. Poor guy didn’t have a chance to be normal.
"ambitious and war loving father"? If anything the sources depict him as the opposite. When Tiberius came to power and a mutiny of the legions occurred they tried to give Germanicus the role of emperor instead, to which he literally took out his sword and threatened to kill himself rather than betray Tiberius. It is clear by the honours and powers that Tiberius bestowed on Germanicus that he trusted him, judging from the sources he was an honourable man and loved deeply by the people. "cold power hungry mother"? Agrippina is one of the only females in the imperial family that Tacitus doesn't go in to detail about how cruel and power hungry they are, and that is saying something as Tacitus takes ANY opportunity to bring up rumours of women manipulating things and killing people. As far as the sources and evidence go both of Caligula's parents were loved by the people and honourable examples in deeply troubled times. Unless you are referencing some cynical modern historian's perspective who sides with Tiberius and claims all of his victims were secretly enemies then I don't know where you got these notions of Germanicus and Agrippina.
Mary Beard is to Ancient History what David Attenborough is to nature. What David Starkey and Lucy Worsley are to British History All four are British national treasures. Makes me proud to be Canadian and part of the Commonwealth.
I am American and I maybe daft but I wish we had lost Revolutionary War. As my hero Winston Churchill said the English speaking peoples. I too feel that I am a part of the Empire. About 17 years ago my wife was pregnant with my son. Another female coworker was also pregnant. I walked into the office at work one day. She asked me, “have you thought of a name for your baby?” I responded (with a straight face) “I think we’ve settled on Caligula!” She looked at me in absolute horror. 🤣 I then broke character and told her I was just joking. I don’t think she enjoyed the joke as well as I did.
Mary Beard and Mary Berry. Two of my favorite ladies from across the pond!!! Both have such an engaging way about them, great speakers and teachers!!! Long live the Mary B's !!!
Great documentary. Amazing that the statues always seem to depict the emperors with wavy boyish hair no matter their age, even if they were a lot older than Caligula. I suppose the emperors always had to be pleased with the final result or the sculptor would be found at the bottom of a cliff somewhere.
Absolutely agree. The ancient version of Photoshop. Michelangelo was said to have done the same thing with the Medici statues - making them look much more handsome and buff than the real counterparts.
Back for another view of my favourite Roman ruler. The mysteries of life lead one to wonder whether this man has walked the earth in some kind of reincarnation..or whether he has been dead aeons.
17:00 - It isn't just Rome. This has gone on everywhere when power is to be had. Am I the only one to be thinking of the Wars of the Roses and the Princes in the Tower?
Rome fascinates me so much, I first visited this city in 2011 then in 2013 and finally in 2017. To this day I have not fully explored the city. I love it's intermingling of ancient history in the middle of modern life, just simply amazing. I always say that back home in America we see history behind glass or displays, Rome is an open air museum of a city with so much transcendental history even to the US. I stayed really close to Horti Lamiani in 2011 and walked in this park not knowing completely its history. Thanks #Timeline-WorldHistoryDocumentaries.
History is written by the winner in battle and the rich and powerful.Always has been, always will be.Her presentation and her vast knowledge of the subject is what makes it "come to life" as well as the use of brilliant C.G.I. and visual display to capture the imagination of even the most distracted listener.

Most detailed and well researched documentary I've ever seen. I love it! The narrator lady has really painted a picture with her voice. Need to have more historical docs narrated by Mary.
She's great but please stop putting your hands on everything! It's uncalled for, a bad example, and somehow arrogant (I'm an important historian so I can do this). With a zillion tourists a day crowding to see Europe's heritage, she should show an example of respect (does good work though).
Just so everyone knows, Mary has a new book out called "Twelve Caesars". I haven't read it yet, myself, but I do own her other books, "SPQR", and have seen everything she's a part of on UA-cam. So, with all that in mind, I can safely tell you to buy the new book.
I love Mary Beard's exuberance and enthusiasm! Absolutely contagious in the best of ways, makes me eager to learn more about anything and everything. And yes, 'Goldenboy Caligula Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus' thought very highly of himself in his twisted psychopathic narcissism. I imagine him with a sadistic sneering lisp subtle, pleasing and deadly treacherous, maybe like an empowered Andrew Cunanan. Roman history is fascinating for its literature, social complexities, art, architecture and the science that enabled many of The Roman Empire's technical accomplishments. How much greater and longer lasting might the Roman Empire have been if they had possessed the concept of '0'?
Ms. Beard is simply the best!Being able to educate us so coherently, concisely, factually and passionately is her great talent. Bravissima bravissima Prof. ssa Beard!
Finally a legit historian comes out and says what I always have , that Caligula is the most misunderstood emperor . Lots of what we read is justification by his murderers.
Absolutely love your mix of history sprinkled with a tad of comedy. You make learning fun and obviously are a well-learned and well-educated woman that 'knows her stuff!' Thank you!
A baseless rumour probably as part of the smear campaign. No wonder Caligula was close to his sisters considering what happened to the rest of his family.
I see. So now everything that was said about " little Boots 👢 " were Baseless rumors 🙄. Just because you're enemies wrote about you doesn't mean they only wrote lies and rumors. Also all rumors aren't lies...many ( if not most) have a bases in truth. And finally, what if we suppose that the main reason that only you're enemies wrote about a particular person is because they had Slain all their friends? After all...when a psycopothy becomes emperor and is finally done with his killings...who is left? Who indeed?
What a wonderful documentary on Caligula. It really makes you wonder, had you been brought up in such a barbaric fashion, would you have turned out so different? I’d wager, you would not. Nurture versus nature most times they go hand and hand Bravo Mary Beard and Timeline for bringing Caligula’s story to life 💞🙏🏻
If we were all brought up the same way as Caligula, then we would be Caligula, no? So, u pointed out the obvious. This lady did not even mention any of Caligula's laws he made. No mention of any legislation and WHY they murdered him. She says the people liked Caligula, but gives no reasons at all for this- nor backs it up with any evidence. It's LACKING
Always love a Roman documentary with Mary Beard hosting. Caligula really was some piece of work. Not sure who was worse--Caligula or Nero. Ancient Rome is a fascinating subject and Mary Beard brings it to life for me.
Mary Mary, Mary! She makes even the most historically challenged person want to know more. She is a wonderful historian. I spent 3 weeks in Italy. Wish I could followed her around. I see that I missed so much! : - (
Wow! At about 36"00 laughing out loud with her comparing Caligulas horse and pets of the emporers to the Queen and how her dogs are fed in silver bowls by servants in their regalia etc. yet really an underlying truth of then and now. I love the way she tells stories and interweaves them in such creative ways and how she goes to the actual places she is speaking about and to artifacts that relate to what she is saying, plus her subjective interpretation of a Roman emperor 2,000 years ago! The film editing and the resolution, of the few that come out nice and clear, very well done. I think too of all the people who die because of a reign of power, like even of today.

She’s amazing! I’ve been watching a lot of documentaries with her she goes deep in depth.
Ms. Beard is a Beast. She is so enthralled and fascinated by the subject, that it is her very enthusiasm which draws you in, and then her knowledge and editing that hooks you. Great stuff, really great stuff
Mary Beard is such an excellent historian. She has the knack of reducing her deep serious research, into such interesting learning for the rest of us.
"They hate us 'cuz they ain't us." - Caligula

they hate us then they stabbed us 50 times and killed our wife and baby
That doesn't rhyme in Latin, so he would not have said that !

Some would say that this is what human nature is left to its own devices and with nothing to check its excesses. I tend to believe that.
Alarm

Absolutely brilliant historian, Mary Beard. Her knowledge is astounding, her documentaries riveting.
Capri sounds like a terrifying place to be in Caligula's time, but it's visually stunning, and I'd love to visit it.
Sherri Smith i'm tryna figure out if they built the vatican on cleopatra's house
Well worth a trip. Tiberius's palace is superb.
My uncle had a Capri back in the early 80s. It looked OK. Wouldn't say stunning though.
I'll be there April 25-30 this spring.
IT IS BEAUTIFUL.
I wanted to teach English but failed to get my Doctorate. History is not boring if taught with the passion of Miss Beard.
Love being Irish and knowing the history of what the British done to us, makes me glad we left the Commonwealth

What about Dr. Suzannah Lipscomb? I love watching her documentaries on killer (literally) stuff of the Victorian and Edwardian era! XD
If I'd had Mary as a professor I'd have learned much more, her presentation is excellent
The saying "Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get you." comes to mind then hearing about his story.
This lady's voice is gold love it
Never knew ancient Roman history can be so interesting when narrated by Mary Beard. She is such an amazing storyteller!!
Mary Beard is great, if you like her look for stuff with Bettany Hughes as well, shes similarly engaging.
Tqvm V. Just viewed Bettany Hughes. Quite engaging. Tqvm!!
She’s the most Interesting person to learn from, so animated and genuinely excited to share her knowledge!👍❤️
Nothing beats listening about a topic from a professional that truly has a passion for what they know and want to share with others
What do you think?
What makes this particular history documentary so good? No cheesy "re-enactments".
I then broke character and told her I was just joking. I don’t think she enjoyed the joke as well as I did.
Mary Beard and Mary Berry. Two of my favorite ladies from across the pond!!!
Both have such an engaging way about them, great speakers and teachers!!!
Long live the Mary B's !!!
I love them too!!
Dr. Beard is so good, explains things well, so expressive. I love her lessons. I love watching her share her knowledge.
I could literally listen to miss professor Mary Beard talk about anything history. She is truly genius!
Mary Beard brings Caligula's Rome to life.
The nightmare reign...
Great documentary. Amazing that the statues always seem to depict the emperors with wavy boyish hair no matter their age, even if they were a lot older than Caligula. I suppose the emperors always had to be pleased with the final result or the sculptor would be found at the bottom of a cliff somewhere.
I’ve thought the same thing!
the original facetune lol
Absolutely agree. The ancient version of Photoshop. Michelangelo was said to have done the same thing with the Medici statues - making them look much more handsome and buff than the real counterparts.
John Hurt was the quintessential Emperor Caligula in "I, Claudius." He was brilliant and captured the madness!
I don't think he played Caligula. He was Claudius I think
Derek Jacobi played the Emperor Claudius. John Hurt played the Emperor Caligula.
@@firenze5555 Great actor too.
I agree; they say that Malcolm McDowell was pretty darn good too but there was NO WAY I would of been allowed to see that (rated X).

Mary is brilliant, we need more of her on TV, producers take note, never boring with an impish sense of humour and fabulous new take on history, im a fan obviously
Even in todays world news media shy away from documentary like this it exspose evil doers in to days society and government for devide and controll for power. In the same form and matter
Mary Beard is the best and most informative historian I have ever listened to
Best Roman Doc I’ve seen. Mary beard is phenomenal
It's been nearly two thousand years since anyone has been as nice to Caligula as Dame Mary is.
For dessert, check out the 1970s BBC production of "I, Claudius," with John Hurt as Caligula and Derek Jacobi in the title role.
AMEN! I, Claudius is my MOST favorite BBC series! I was lucky enough
to see and meet Sir Derek in 1984 when the RSC was in NYC!
The best! John Hurt at first declined the offer to play Caligula until he was invited to meet the cast. Thankfully, he changed his mind.
One of my favorite TV series.
Trici Venola a true classic!
I watched it as a kid. Frightened the bejesus out of me!
Mary's intusiasm and her love to Rome do all historic stories and facts 10 times more intersting and even super fun to experience.
Mary Beard is so enjoyable to listen to. A true professional with a sense of humor and just the right amount of drama. Just the best.

A documentary about Rome with Mary Beard? CLICK!
She's great but please stop putting your hands on everything! It's uncalled for, a bad example, and somehow arrogant (I'm an important historian so I can do this). With a zillion tourists a day crowding to see Europe's heritage, she should show an example of respect (does good work though).
@@lllordllloyd it's important to touch to show and address important details
Bravissima bravissima Prof. ssa Beard!
Not so factually tbh. Most of what she talks about in this documentary are mere rumors and propaganda (i.e., the perversion that took place in Capri)

Finally a legit historian comes out and says what I always have , that Caligula is the most misunderstood emperor . Lots of what we read is justification by his murderers.

@Lex Ruth Malcolm McDowell, not O’Toole
@@jamesdobson7052 McDowell portrayed Caligula; O'Toole played the aged and jaded Tiberius.
McDowell was an awesome Caligula and the film was not as bad as the critics made it seem to be back then!
That's not at all what you get from this documentary. There's just a lot of "who really knows what happened".
God bless you for bringing Caligula to life. Your excellent excitement made listening very pleasing. Thank you. Please do more
Absolutely love your mix of history sprinkled with a tad of comedy. You make learning fun and obviously are a well-learned and well-educated woman that 'knows her stuff!' Thank you!

It was said that Caligula slept with not only his youngest sister, but also with Aggripina and Livilla his other two sisters.
Nurture versus nature most times they go hand and hand
Bravo Mary Beard and Timeline for bringing Caligula’s story to life 💞🙏🏻
If we were all brought up the same way as Caligula, then we would be Caligula, no? So, u pointed out the obvious.
This lady did not even mention any of Caligula's laws he made. No mention of any legislation and WHY they murdered him. She says the people liked Caligula, but gives no reasons at all for this- nor backs it up with any evidence.

Dressing your son in miniature adult clothes...what a mommy thing to do! I guess it never gets old.
It makes me almost feel bad for Caligula....almost..
