For me, it's May. I just think she's neat.
I may love Iris the most, but if we're talking BEST then I'll have to say Dawn. I like her a lot too.

• Generic personality
• Overdependent on Ash to the point where her character arc revolves around him
• How she first met Ash makes no sense
• How she has a crush on Ash, let alone one that lasts so long, makes no sense, and may arguably be indicative of underlying problems with her even if she were a real life person
• Introducing a character as a pseudo "love interest" for a character who has been the main character for 800+ episodes, beyond plenty of time for such a character to have a "love interest" already, doesn't work (Digimon Tri, around the same time, literally tried to pull something similar with Meiko Mochizuki. Fans weren't happy then.)
• Takes too much time to do anything
• Has only three Pokémon
• Doesn't have a Key Stone or a single Mega Stone
• Is a weak trainer; egregious considering that her source material counterpart (read: Game Serena) is literally an Elite Four level trainer by the end of the story
• The strongest foes she defeated by herself were all weak; again egregious considering that her source material counterpart (read: Game Serena) is literally an Elite Four level trainer by the end of the story
• Eventually gets a "real goal" that's lame (Pokémon Showcases are fundamentally no different from Pokémon Contests, and we've already had 2 Contest-related story arcs already. Plus, Showcases themselves hardly seem exciting.)
• Is coddled by the writing
• Doesn't have her flaws played around with or addressed in order to develop her character (case in point: She's stated to be a lazy girl by her mother, who would expectedly know how Serena is really like, but this is never shown to us at any point. Disliking Rhyhorn Racing is also supposed to be a core point of her character, but she strangely has no issues riding Rhyhorns when the situation calls for it, or problems wanting to teach Ash, Clemont, or Bonnie, how to ride one, and didn't even bother to research whether Pokémon Showcases had any Rhyhorn-related activities in them or not)
• Her most crippling flaw (read: her overdepence on Ash) is treated as crucial to her character
• Doesn't seem to love Ash despite her affections
• Doesn't develop
• Is used for fanservice too often (on that note, sexualization is not the only kind of fanservice)
• Basically says that she wants to marry Ash when she parts ways with him, despite being 10 years old and thus nowhere near old enough to worry about that
• Characterization is too different from the Serena in the source material (read: the games), and it's to the point where Serena might as well be a different character entirely rather than an adaptation of the one from the source material (read: the games)
• Due to Serena being an adaptation of a character of the same name from the source material (read: the games), she's a bastardization of said character
Its kinda sad to know that May(Haruka) couldnt appear again in the anime due to the lack of voice actress. In Japan, I guess they simply respect the original voice actor/actress by not just outright replacing them.
In the english dub, many characters are voiced by the same people.
The English dub coul really learn something about that. Don't replace Voice Actors.
Yeah pretty much. It's not 100% of the time, VA's have and do still get replaced in Japan's side of the industry, and in the case of women I have seen like temporary understudies take over in the event of a pregnancy, (funny enough it was for Pikachu's va but in her role as Cbopper in One Piece). But I think for long running series and roles like Pokemon and May, pretty much the only thing that would cause a permenant replacement is death itself.
Ash may not be a genius when it comes to love sometimes, but he understands people's feelings for the most part and is particularly attentive to Serena. I still remember the episode where she was feeling down and was obviously distracted, so he took her to do things that he figured she'd liked. It wasn't the first time he was sweet and attentive to her and it certainly wasn't the last one. They both supported and admire each other on top of that.He's probably not gonna be the most obviously romantic guy out there , but I think this suggests they definitely had a deeper connection.
In Till We Compete Again!, when Ash is shown entering his house, the white flowers in the foreground are baby breath flowers which symbolize everlasting love and are used in bride's bouquets. It's been confirmed that it's a hint from the writers that shows their content with the ending of XY&Z having Ash and Serena kiss and that it's a willing hidden message.
Her reunion with Ash in pokemon journeys also had more romantic undertones than people tends to notice.
In that episode the narrator says: "Satoshi and Serena", not Satoshi and his friends as he usually does (and it's the second time they do that with them by the way, the first one was when the XY special came out).
The ankle bracelet is usually used to symbolize that a girl has someone she loves. And the green light shown at the end of her return episode is actually a reference to the green ray from one of Jules Verne's romantic novels, in which a green light appears at sunset when two lovers gaze into each other's eyes, similar to what happens between Ash and Serena at the end of the episode. The green ray signals to the ones who sees it that everything in life has come together in the most perfect way, leading to a happiness that is surely complete. That happiness, in the story of the novel, comes from falling in love. Ash and Serena are definitely implied to have feelings for each other given all the symbolism in their relationship and their actions.

Iris is honestly vary Underrated and Overhated in my Opinion.
I really like Lillie because of her character development! I really like Dawn because of her kind and caring personality! I like them both because of there kindness and loyalty toward Ash.

Misty and Serena are my two favs by far.
Misty for nostalgia as I was a teenager during Gen 1 and Gen 2 Pokemon anime.
And Serena for being the girl who not only loved Ash Ketchum, but she also cosplayed as him in one episode.
Serena didn't love Ash. She loved a shadow and a thought of Ash. There's a difference.

@@theantrules6436 Because of the way she acts towards Ash the moment he gets depressed. She doesn't know how to react, especially since she's had it so easy, had never been in his shoes, and had never seen Ash's weak points. However, despite this, she doesn't try to comfort him. She doesn't try to understand what he's going through. What she does instead is throw snowballs at him because she wants "the real Ash back" so badly. Despite what she says, she doesn't know "the real Ash" at all. And the Ash that she's come to "know" is a fake mental image she's created in her head, and because of that mental image, she's always expecting Ash to act how she sees him acting, even though people generally don't act like how she sees Ash. She expects him to ALWAYS be confident, ALWAYS be independent, ALWAYS be a strong leader 24/7--365 days. And she only got mad at Ash because he was breaking this mental image of him that she has in her head. That's very selfish and manipulative of her, especially since people generally don't act that way. This behavior of her's is never called out, and she’s framed as in the right, with Ash even thanking her for it. If Serena's unwilling to see that Ash has problems of his own, then she's unwilling to make a relationship with him work out. And if she only wants the version of Ash she admires so much to always be by her side, then she doesn't deserve any version of Ash at all.

So I’m just gonna throw my 2 cents and give my opinion, even though I know it’s probably not a very popular one.
I genuinely think Serena was one of the weaker companions. She would easily rank under most other pokegirls for me.
XYZ was very shonen-esque in it’s writing and unfortunately Serena suffered because of it in my opinion. I didn’t like how they wrote her entire development arc around her being in love with Ash - to quote the video “even when he mistreated her”-. Though, I will say her wanting to become a pokemon performer was very heartwarming.
In a way, Ash impacts and influences the development of all of his companions, but hers felt too dependant on him and on “what he would think of her”, and “how she could help him” etc… It didn’t resonate with me, nor do I think it’s good writing.
I don’t dislike her, and I think she stands out in her own way. But with a cast of girl-characters who usually have strong writing, personal developments and personalities, I think she lags behind.
My top 3 would be:
Lilie ( Marlow and lana included of course)
Dawn
Misty
The XY anime was "Shounen-esque" because that's what its fans wanted it to be, despite the fact that it was alienating the target audience, leading to the sharp decline in ratings. And it doesn't help that Shounen tends to drop the ball when it comes to writing female characters. (Case in point: Asuna Yuuki from Sword Art Online. In fact, most female characters if not every female character in Sword Art Online counts.)
And her wanting to become a Pokémon Performer ended up making her another Coordinator when we've already had 2. It doesn't really make sense for her, considering that she was trying to get away from Rhyhorn Racing, some elements of which are in Pokémon Showcases. And she doesn't seem to be very good at Pokémon Performing, either. Plus, it doesn't let Serena come out of her shell, given how tailored for her they are. She should have been a Sky Trainer or something.

Loved how you mentioned May's VA in the video, it's the main reason why May has not returned in the anime for such a long time. IF she was not sick then there would be more Pokemon fans aware of May.. As for the fan favorite, that was more towards American Pokemon shippers due to the dub..

Of the top 2, only 1 could be bothered to put contests on hold for a single day to support ash at arguably the most important moment of his life. Dawn was a ride or die friend to the end of the series.
For those who still hope for Ash to return: I was recently watching some Pokemon fanart on Deviantart, watching the images, reading the comments, when I saw the comment of a user, whose name I don't want to mention. It says:
'Actually, if the rumors I took on my Twitter account are true, Rica Matsumoto's contract has expired and has completed her last recordings for the show. She has since parted ways from OLM & TPC to focus on other original projects elsewhere. So that means after Journeys finishes it's run, Ash will never be seen again. As for Pikachu? Don't worry, folks! I'm pretty sure that your favorite electric mouse will be given the right amount of care by his replacement...'

Dawn was one of my favorite, but JN disappointed me coz even with more returns than everyone, she’s the character with less development on her goal since hew own saga, shes at the same point as BW, except may but for different reason

Meanwhile we have characters like iris who become a champion, Brock a doctor, Lillie found her father and Serena even become a better coordinator than May and probably also Dawn, and this top 2 duo (lisia serena) are even forming an idol duo.

@@theantrules6436 Because she's not her own character, things get handed to her undeservedly and without effort, she's used for fanservice too often, and she doesn't develop. And if anything else, she comes across as unintentionally creepy, and unintentionally unsympathetic.

I enjoy the video!, for me my favorite will be always be Lillie, because her development and how much she improve as a character, specially to see how complete was her character and story from SM to JN really her end of the story was really the best way to end her character!
May and Dawn of course are my favorite too! because even both have different goal, her development was very different, as for may was an insecure trainer to see what path to go, to become the princess of hoenn! as Dawn similar to ash, became someone who learn a lot thanks to Ash, and is funny because the counter shield was thanks to Dawn because her contests moves, and after that Ash, Paul, Leon, Brook (in SM with Geodude) used this move and really was amazing!.

Why does the entire Pokemon fandom treat Chloe as if she was mishandled since she didn't get as much screentime as other main characters. She IS NOT a main character. Just a fairly prominent side character. This could not be more clear unless the wrote it in the script. There are only 2 human main characters in Journeys.

I think the writers that worked on Pokemon Advanced, DP and XY/Z Series made a mistake on making May, Dawn and Serena losing their respective Grand Pokemon Contests. Cause the chances of see those 3 ever showing up again, especially with Pokemon Horizon out there now, is very slim and highly unlikely to happen now. Like Iris made her Dream become a reality of being the Dragon Master and end up eventually becoming a champion of Unova, and Misty still being the Water Gym leader. But with May, Dawn, and Serena they never made their dreams accomplished, I think its even more criminal that May lost to both Hoenn and Kanto Grand Pokemon Contests all in the same series too. There needs to be like anthology Pokemon Anime Series, of May, Dawn and Serena winning their Grand Pokemon Contests mostly in their respective regions. Or just straight up like another Pokemon Chronicles type Series.

I don't hate any of the pokemon girls so just respect my opinion and I will respect yours.
It's Serena who barely developes and has no impact, and is the most similar to Sakura from Naruto or Kairi from Kingdom Hearts, not Misty.
You say Serena barely developed when she had to stand up to her mother for her goal along learning from her mistakes to become better in the future and is now a coordinator in Journeys also Serena was the cause for some of Ash's victory in XY along with bring back his confidence after his first match with Ice gym leader.

All her mother really wanted from her was commitment to a goal; the fact that Serena easily gave up on anything that she had put her mind to was why she was pushed on the path of a Rhyhorn Racer in the first place. And at no point does Serena ever learn from her mistakes, given how often things get handed to her throughout the whole XY anime. And she wasn't a cause for Ash's victory against Wulfric; it would have happened anyways without Serena's involvement, which is the scenario Journeys itself goes with.
So your saying Serena Character is about her relationship with Ash when she has her own goals to achieve while Misty does have a goal but is never show doing much to reaching it also Misty is given a mega stone off screen which could have been a nice way to develop her character and throughout Kanto she was just like Sakura a girl that pick on MC for making dumb mistakes even thought Misty has no right to do this when their the same age and she also treat Psyduck poorly and Togipi is a plot device and should have been given to Ash or Brock but no she steal the egg at the last minute also Serena looking up to Serena is similar to how Hinata look up to Naruto difference is Serena is a Main character and is given the proper time to show off her character while Hinata lacks that and if you think I wrong many UA-cam describe character develop in the videos along with the fact her interaction with Ash,Clemont and , Bonnie makes them feel like a family their more to character then them tying to achieve their dream you know and if you don't understand my reason just want XY and XYZ.

Her deciding to become a Pokémon Performer comes across as a byproduct of that, not something that she decided for her own sake. And it's not true that Misty's not shown doing much to achieve her goal. And the comparisons between Serena and Hinata as well as Misty and Sakura are tone deaf and unfair. Serena's more similar to Asuna Yuuki from the Fairy Dance Arc onwards in SAO, while Misty's more similar to characters like, Lyn from Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade, or Yoko from Gurren Lagann.
Also, again. Serena doesn't develop. And her, Ash, Clemont, and Bonnie don't feel like a family, and feel more like Ash and his version of Gary's cheerleaders.

Hot take, Misty is pretty overrated. People only like her based on nostalgia reasons, since shes the OG girl and probably spend the most time with Ash.
However, she had a very annoying personality, always being a nagging queen and berating Brock and Ash. She followed Ash around not because she liked him as a friend or anything like that, but she wanted compensation for her destroyed bike. Her goal of becoming a water pokemon master went nowhere.
She looked down on pokemon which werent cute in her eyes. It took a while until she became less bitchy and actually developed as a genuine friend to Ash. If Misty wasnt part of the OGs and the first female companion but only joined in a later series, people would probably rate her pretty low.
I think the problem with Misty is that she wasn't given any kind of arc whatsoever during her time in the anime. Yes, she had a goal but she never actually worked towards it in any significant way. Most of her progression as a trainer comes from her return episodes rather than from her time in the spotlight. Which isn't that impressive when you consider that all the other girls also got to show their progression on top of having fully developed arcs during her time in the anime (that she didn't got).

Mostly true. Even Takeshi Shudo admited Misty is the weakest character of OG series and he didn't develop her story.
However I don't agree people likes her only because of nostalgia. Misty is the most comic pokegirl. She can be annoying for her companions but I can't say she is annoying for audience too.
Her personality changed too. She was not friendly to Ash in the beginning but than she started to see Ash as her burden. They even added some shipbait moments for making her more interesting.
