Deftones - Rock Am Ring 2003
Вставка

- This is the only copy of the recording of the Deftones performance at Rock Am Ring 2003 that exists.
It is said that the band was so dissatisfied with their performance (or the footage?) that they wanted it to never see the light of day. Don't ask me where i got it.
Now, over 15 years later, i think we can all agree that they don't need to fear "bad publicity" from this footage anymore. ;-)
There is a short 12 minute segment from this footage that was aired on MTV2 (with the wrong aspect ratio and with the channel bug and overlays visible), but this the full length original material, in 720x576 SD 4:3 (with a slightly improved aspect ratio) with interlacing and all.

It’s cool to see James Hetfield appreciating the deftones. It’s weird...the older I get, the more I can appreciate them, myself. I was in high school when they were at their peak and it was always “dude, the deftones are so emo and gay”. Then my senior year, I went and saw them. Chino had the flu and still CRUSHED Digital Bath that night. I kept thinking “he’s sick, he’ll never be able to hit those notes”..”FEEL LIIIIIKE MOOOORE”...it was unbelievable. Now, almost 20 years later, I’ve really grown to understand their use of atmosphere and groove...they were almost like the shoegazers of the alt metal scene.
You got it right. T2020
They were almost like the shoegazers of the alt metal scene. Es una de las descripciones más chingonas del sonido de deftones que haya escuchado.
I was quite the opposite, I remember that listening to Deftones in 2000 was like "oh shit that's too edgy for me".
I used to listen Limp Bizkit, Korn and those MTV-commercial bands, but Deftones was always a different breed. More "heavy" and dark.
DAAAAMN I laugh my ass off here dude KKKK nice story!!
@@JDogg-ue9if
Sure, in the literal, genre sense…the Deftones are probably “alt metal” more than anything else. They aren’t Dashboard Confessional, Sleeping with Sirens or Sunny Day Real Estate. That’s *actual* emo.
But in a way, bands like Deftones or Counting Crows definitely are. If you just read the lyrics to a tune like Pink Maggit or Change on face value or hear the way that Chino delivers them…that’s as “emo” as anything else out there. It’s not a pejorative. It’s just an element to what they do.

I was there in 2003. I guess they might be dissatisfied not with the recording or their performance but with the technical issues this concert had to face. It's not audible in this recording but during their gig the main vocals that were sent to the main speakers were muted or some cable broke or something else - I don't know. But for three quarters of this gig Chino wasn't audible at all. I was really disappointed because I am and was a huge fan of the deftones and they were my main reason to come to this festival.

They were so fucking brutal during these times.
The "Dark Days" era shows were really hit or miss. Some nights they were really good, and some nights they were absolutely horrendous, especially after Chino had to undergo throat surgery to repair a vocal cord during the S/T tour. Fat Chino especially is mostly miss.

Man, RIP Chi. It can't be said enough. That guy is forever missed. Even as new younger people listen, read about him and see him in videos and interviews. They'll recognize how amazing he was.
But I wanted to also say how sad it is to think if how Minerva has a newer meaning for Chino and the band. Dedicated to him. Last year (2018), at Día De Los Deftones, Chino cried playing this. The video is on UA-cam. It always gives me chills and sometimes makes me tear up. I never even met the guy it makes me really sad thinking about him but also I try to switch it around and celebrate his work.
I know. I miss him terribly. Honestly, I stopped liking the band after he was no longer able to play. Which sucks, because they are my 2nd favorite band, ever. But it is what it is, I guess.

Yeah, but that's cool that you took photos. I never had a camera with me and I wasn't exactly a sentimental person back in those days, so I don't really have any of that type of "proof". But... I actually remember this day very, very well. Since it happened to also be the day I officially became a man, after scoring with a pretty cute goth-looking chick who was there to see _The Rasmus_ or some sh** 😅
From what I remember the lineup that day went smth like Metallica->Marilyn Manson->Deftones->Queens of the Stoneage, so it was pretty "epic", as the zoomers would put it nowadays.
That's why it was pretty neat to see myself in the video here. Good times :)
@@runi5413 Yeah good times. Feelt surreal to see this in the youtube feed, its been 17 years! You are absolutely right, queens of the stone age played before deftones the same day and Metallica was the last act that day. BUT as I remember Queens of the stone age was not the first band to play on the main stage that day. I think it was maybe Disturbed and one more. I remember this because after Deftones was done I had been standing in the crowd for 4-6 hours. It was Mettalicas first show after realising ST.Anger and I remember James Hetfield commented that he could smell how dirty the crowd was from the stage. This was actually the only festival I have been to outside of Sweden. 😢

I think it is the best ever live performance of Minerva.
Nah, there are better. Chino fucked up some of the singing
It’s surreal seeing Chi alive and kicking ass no bubble gum. Chino seemed to be struggling with his pipes at times and still hold it down. But Chi’s vocals were strong like bull with more presence than the rest of the band itself at times. He was, in my opinion, irreplaceable and it’s no wonder he was kept alive as long as he was- they were waiting hoping he’d just “wake” up and Deftones would be whole again. Seeing this made me realize just how different they were during the Chi years. Not to discredit the bassists since Chi but just look at him- happy to be there! RIP Chi. Sacto represent!!
They were my first concert in high school and I've been a big fan ever since. Concert was in 1996 at Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ. We got to hear an early version of "Teething" from the Crow 2 soundtrack. I knew even then that this band would stand the test of time.

I love when a band does not warm up the crowd (I know there are openers) and they just start out witha banger straight to your dome.
31:23 Oh Chino, you were prophetic.
Even got all the lyrics on point 😂
How is this prophetic? Starting in the mid 90s, rock was on its way out and radio started to play more country, rap, and pop music. If this concert is in 2003, he had at least five or six years of seeing the downward trend of rock before making the statement. So answer me this, how is he prophetic?
@@FIDEL_CASHFLOW_ Because literally the majority of music nowadays is exactly like what they did right there. And Zenarchy was trying to be funny. Whether he was serious about "prophetic" or not, the goal was to joke, and the 43 people who liked his comment obviously understood that. Have some fun for once in your life.
@@jobmeyer4442 Chino had at least five or six years to see the downward trend towards what he's talking about in this clip from 2003. Noticing a trend over half a decade and commenting on it hardly makes one a prophet.
And no. The 43 people who liked this comment did so out of a sense of superiority. People like yourself who seemingly look down upon other musical genres becoming popular are so incredibly insecure that they use something as inane as taste in music to projector superiority on to others. They tell themselves that only them and a select minority of people are intelligent enough to still like something like rock music and that everyone else is an idiot for liking what's popular.
