The Japanese karaoke music perfectly accents this whole scene. It's like all the cosmos was in perfect harmony when this movie was made. "How do you feel Takashi?" "Fucking great!" They need to put up the scene where Takashi gets called a nerd by his fellow Japanese who has the house for rent.

ROTN's came out around the same time the VCR or VHS started to creep into american homes. We watched it so often as 8 yr olds we could recite the entire movie. Plus the songs.

However I realized, that the version that we watched had all of those creepy scenes removed. I never even realized those scenes were gone because they were THAT insignificant to the plot and it honestly if they left it in would’ve made the protagonists less likable. The movie all-in-all is great but the scenes are so unnecessary and looking back, just aren’t a good thing. I’m no prude, I’m all for edgy humor but idk, the rape scene & the cameras in the dormitory stuff just aged horribly and..yeah.

I think it could be done, since save for the song at the end, there's nothing that's really a negative stereotype of a Japanese nerd in college. His English has a few problems, but this is a natural thing for many cultural exchange students. It's a lot less common nowadays though. They could've gone for stereotypes about Asians drinking, but chose not to. Takashi wins because he's a steady bike rider with lots of determination. The headband is common among Japanese athletes and competitors. It's a good luck charm, while also having a function like a sweatband, and also helping helmets stay in place. So yeah, I think this scene could work.

I love how triumphant the scenes in this movie are. Tekashi is wearing Bruce Lee's outfit from game of death the song is playful sounding but beautifully matches the scene. The 80s was always about being beat down backed into a corner and rising up, coming out fighting back fiercely, becoming heroes to overcome adversities, and in this case, discrimination.
In fucking tears the first time I saw this scene. That song ... lol. But this movie was extremely prescient on how "geek culture" as it were moved to the mainstream. Grossly underrated film as it is still hilarious.

I love this movie, but not for the reason you might think. It was filmed at the University of Arizona, my alma mater. I love seeing what’s the campus looked like back in the 80s. For example, the parking lot in the scene doesn’t exist anymore. It’s now the optical science building.
The subtle humor in this movie is great........like when Poindexter goes to give Takashi the pill and misses his mouth by about 3 inches because his vision is so bad

I love this movie, but not for the reason you might think. It was filmed at the University of Arizona, my alma mater. I love seeing what’s the campus looked like back in the 80s. For example, the parking lot in the scene doesn’t exist anymore. It’s now the optical science building.
