Having grown up and currently living in Marin county (just spent the day at Pierce Point in Point Reyes) I loved this video! West Marin is a whole lot different than the rest of Marin and this shed an amazing light on it. Go Braves!
My old high school in Monterey county south of Marin county had a 8 man team and my freshman year I was on our first 11 man team playing varsity. My senior year we won our first game ever playing 11 man. It was cool to be part of school history twice.
I watched Jared Goff at Marin Catholic and knew he was special. Many doubted his ability to be a franchise quarterback in the NFL. I never did. For his size he is so good.
I used to drive by here almost everyday at one of my old jobs. I even still cruise through there on my motorcycle every now and then. My sister had a basketball game against tomales when we attended Montgomery High school here in Santa Rosa and that was the only time I've ever been in that gym. It's great to see that they're featured in a video!
Most of Marin County is not like this. For example, Jared Goff (who appears on a TV that the young players are watching at 16:42) grew up in Novato, and went to Marin Catholic High School, before attending college locally at UC Berkeley. Marin Catholic competes in the WCAL, which includes Junipero Serra High School, where another famous quarterback (Tom Brady) played. It's nice that NFL Films covers unusual regional variations of the game, like this 8-man football team in Tomales.
Marin county also has another very valuable crop grown in large numbers....... Beautiful part of the state. Also, how dare those teachers let those kids debate who the best NFL team is, while sitting in 9er country.
Great town great people . Had the opportunity to to play them in high school in 2009 and. They played with the heart of a lion after the game complete sportsman ship
Farming is a lot for kids growing up and it takes away a lot of their time to be a kid but at the same time it’s amazing for them their work ethic later in life will be top notch they’ll be strong af and smart af. Along with keeping them away from drugs n alcohol n the wrong people. So yeah it’s a lot for them as kids but it sets them up so well later in life. I put bales of hay up in a loft one time n holy hell it killed me n then wait till one of the strings breaks on ya 😂 so I will always give farmers respect and the credit they deserve for the absolutely hard work they do!
Hey, the county I grew up in my teen years through the 1980s. I went to Point Reyes just a few times for oysters but don’t venture to that area much. I’ve been to Bodega Bay and Dillon Beach areas more the last few years lately for crabbing and the drive can be two hours long due to traffics. There aren’t much to do in Marin county though.
I was living in San Rafael for about a year 2 years ago n the gas prices alone are a killer so I can’t imagine being a farmer n having to pay for all that diesel. I’m from Indiana so moving out to San Rafael was a huge shock as to how freaking expensive everything is. It’s nuts.
Very reminiscent of 6 man football in Western Nebraska. Everyone on offense is eligible to catch a pass. Some of the least populated counties in the US.
I understand doing this if there isn't enough students to field a team, year after year but make the field a 100 yards long. I understand making the field skinnier bc of spacing issues but keep the length the same...
Totally ignored significant socio economic factors....Elsie Allen HS is almost 100 percent Hispanic barrio, ghetto poor. Tomales is agricultural but every rancher sits on property worth tens of millions of dollars, being not 30 miles from San Francisco. It remains a small town because Marin County restrictive zoning virtually prohibits new houses, to keep housing prices sky high. The film makers made it sound like this is Nebraska. Far more interesting and a better picture of struggles of ISOLATED small town school playing 8 man football would have been some of the towns mentioned that Tomales plays--Covelo, Potter Valley.
That opposing team was Elsie Allen? The same school from Santa Rosa? Their school is big enough to have a full sized football team. Santa Rosa has several large high schools (Montgomery, SR High, Maria Carrillo, Piner). Why would Elsie Allen only have an 8 man team?
Like many high schools where all the students are low-income, turnout for many extracurricular activities is low. This is due to the students needing to spend after-schools hours working part-time jobs, care for younger siblings, and, yes, due to a higher percent of the students who are failing classes or involved in negative events. Some of the biggest schools in SF and Oakland also have very tiny rosters for football (though I think most still manage to field an 11-man team.) Elsie did not even have football for a couple years. The plan is to build success in 8 man and then get back to 11 man (as would be normal for a school of its size.)
I've never heard of 8 man football 😭😭😭 so I have a serious question, if you played this in high school, you still able to get a scholarship for football for it? Would it be hard for you to transition to traditional 11 man full size field? This is cool I love it but I was just curious about that
Athletic attributes are what scouts would look for, football IQ can be taught unlike speed and size. I've seen 9 man players transition to the Division 1 level.
You got guys in the nfl thats never even played organized football like jordan mailata coming from austrailia/nz so im sure an 8man star could make the jump
I played against Rashaan Salaam in HS 8-man football in San Diego where we went to different private schools. He went to UC Boulder and won the Heisman in '94. I recall hearing our coaches talking about some of the first arena football teams coming around, asking for copies of our playbooks!
@@bryeephe’s also one of the biggest players in the league and had a rugby background. But the 8-man dudes don’t have as big a stage but if you can play, they’ll find you for sure
80 yards? Easier he says?? Great men take the easy route. Was this nation built on easiness?? Live is tough, its a damns struggle. We're teaching these younger generations life is easy and you have to worry about not offending anyone. Ever notice how things have been going downhill since all this started? I predict in 10 years there wont be any football, it'll be to dangerous. Either that or they'll be on the field in full body Nerf suits.,
@ Hell yeah! That’s what’s up, idk if you were a senior or not, but you might’ve played my lil brother in the playoffs at Milledgeville, I’m pretty sure yall blew them out too😂
@@zeeksquad2424The Last name sounds familiar, is your brother Micah? I might’ve spelled him name wrong, but I definitely played against him. 22’-23’ season was my senior year and the year we won state
@ that’s him lmaooo, and yeah I thought yall were niceeeeee. I came back this season that j passed to help coach my brother for his senior year and we lost in the state chip. Still a great experience and it’s helping me reach my goal of becoming a head coach for a program some day🤌🏾🤌🏾
Holy smokes! Tomales is in my old schools league! We played them every year. Thanks for shouting out small town small schools football!

North County?
4 years to win one game?
NFL Films is doing some incredible work. What a video.
Love to see the county I grew up in featured in this video!

Football is Football, 4,6,8,11 players doesn't matter this game teaches so much about life, FOOTBALL IS FOOTBALL
Played 8 man in HS, and we played Tomales in our league. They’ve always had tough boys in the trenches. And always been a respectable opponent

So many small towns in Southern Michigan, the Thumb area, and the Upper Peninsula thrive on 8 man football and they love it all the same!
Marin county also has another very valuable crop grown in large numbers....... Beautiful part of the state. Also, how dare those teachers let those kids debate who the best NFL team is, while sitting in 9er country.
They wanted to know who the best team was. Not the one with the most excuses for every time they lose.
Let’s go Los! Kid is a baller and super humble.
He's an awesome kid! I watched the video and told him later, "That's the most I've heard you talk in one sitting!"
I grew up playing 8 man football in Idaho and My grandpa played 6 man in high school. Great to see 8 man show cased!
I played 8man football when the regular season was over. Great times
I played flag in middle school, my brother played in high school. So much fun
Awesome segment! You go Tomales, sincerely your friends over in Sonoma County.
Nfl just found out not everyone goes to giant high schools
I grew up playing 8 man football in a small town in North Carolina. There are more of us out here than you think
Good Afternoon from Marin
Us Idahoans had to play every snap. All three sides of the ball. Leighton made it too the league too.
NFL films is simply the best. Kudos to everything yall do

So proud of this team and tradition!!!
Graduated THS in 98.

beautiful film!
Alot of the schools I played against in mid michigan are 8 man football as well as the U.P.
This is awesome
Real Marin is very snooty
What exactly is he saying at 3:37 in the video?
i was thinking the same damn thing. how is no one tripping about this
HOGS🔥🔥💪💪
I member esparto playing tomales, I didn’t even know they were in 8 man
Great story! But you lose me with ridiculous amounts of commercials!

That place is not that far from a movie theater lol
Our coach used to call us H.O.G.S as well. 😢

Not 100 yard field!? I’m in Maine and we play on a hundred yard field
it varies by league
Here in VA, 8 man fields are 100x40. It’s typically 80x40 in the midwest.

Not enough eligible players. But I remember when they beat Newman in the 90’s the whole county celebrated 😂
Knowing Elsie Allen they probably only have 8 eligible players.

Peace to San Rafael High, Madrone Continuation and Oracle Independent Study.
Carlos traded some goat cheese and a carton of eggs to get that arm sleeve out in the boonies
Jared Goff territory haha

I think it’s harder to convince coaches at the next level but it still happens.

Then some college students and politicians cry for these people to pay more taxes 🙄

It is my understanding that 80 yards is standard for 8 man in many states. I know it is in Nevada. 8 man football is kind of flag football with pads.
4:27 is when they start talking about football. Everything before that is overdrawn table setting and irrelevant.
Sorry this isn’t football
Channel isn’t watchable because hell there is an ad every 3 minutes in the damn video
that’s called UA-cam
MILLEDGEVILLE IL, great 8-man program, and I was on the first one🥲
Biggsville, IL (West Central High School), I, too was on our school’s first 8-Man team. Great environment playing 8-Man football in Illinois!
