@@sludge4125 You sure, only one job? He also has to block the defender who tried to block a punt or a field goal and tackle if a returner elects to return the ball.
@@sludge4125 Well yeah but that’s the same thing with and kicker and punter but yet one bad kick or punt can cost a team a lot. I am sure if you would put your average nfl player to snap it they would struggle in a real game.
Seeing Pat McAfee talk in an official NFL video brings me great joy. What a treasure that man is to the commentary world. Excellent player too. Just ask the GOAT Vinatieri.
I don't know why but I love the uber specialized positions, kicker, punter, long snapper holder etc... Normally just one job and have to do it again and again perfect each time
On the one hand, it appears ridiculous at first glance, especially to someone like me who follows (and is used to) other football codes where players are usually required to have a fairly large skill set. I mean, a kicker and a punter? On the other hand, it is a unique selling point for NFL/Gridiron football. Sets the sport apart and makes it special. Treating every (seemingly small) aspect of the game as a craft and science.
Ball tilt is so huge as well. Most people don't know that and then they blame the kicker for missing a FG, particularly when it's windy when it would have been made if the holder tilted the ball correctly.
I would just like to reinforce McAfee's statement that it is the long snapper's job to get the laces correct, and the holder corrects him if he's wrong. It wasn't Marino's fault!
Soccer style kicker, graduated from Collier High June 1976, Stetson University honors graduate class of 1980, holds 2 NCAA Division One records, one for most points in a season, one for distance, former nickname "The Mule", the first and only pro-athlete to come out of Collier County, and one HELL of a model American.
The Minnesota punter made the holder of the year award. I remember because I was in High school when he came up with it and my kicker sent it to me (seeing that I was his holder obviously)
No mention of Philadelphia Eagles backup QB Koy Detmer. His main job was not backup QB (though he did that well) but to hold the football for David Akers. The Eagles let him go, and after the Romo incident Akers (as his performance declined) was able to lobby the front office to get Detmer back. (and FG completions returned to being good again)
I used to long snap and I never knew at that level the laces was snappers job. But I guess you do it the same every time so I could see them being able to do X number of rotations consistently.
It is going to be very interesting to see how Justin Tucker performs with a new holder this upcoming season after having the best holder of all time in Sam Koch retire. I would not be surprised at all if he has more uncharacteristic misses than usual.
Because of a bad hold, the field goal was lost. Because of a lost field goal, the playoff was lost. Because of losing the playoffs the season was lost. Because of a losing season the franchise became lost. It's seems like a miner detail, but the fate of careers and franchises can be determined by these minor mistakes. Vikings and Cowboys fans know what I'm talking about.
MLB Hall Of Fame slugger Harmon Killebrew said the way to hit a knuckle ball in baseball is not to hit the stitches. I don’t think he was joking when he said it. That’s precision. Holding for a placekicker in football must be incredibly difficult. Lucy Van Pelt had the right idea after all.
All through pound football, or youth football, whatever.....99% of the time the quarterback is holding (unless they're the best kicker, in which case they'll be kicking) so by the time guys get to the pros it's really a muscle memory thing, it still takes work for sure, but the basics are there
I'm a hardcore Steelers fan and I had no clue who the holder in the thumbnail was. Its Corliss Waitman a punter who was on preseason/training camp rosters on for Pittsburgh in 2020-2021
There's a lot to special teams that is rarely if ever discussed unless they've have a bad game but our QB focused NFL commentary takes away from players that have had major contributions to winning games.
Could someone clear this up? How is it the long snappers job to get the laces right? He's sending a spiralling ball to the holder. Is it that he trains to snap the ball with a very specific number of rotations? Or is there some other reason?
Long snappers are a very unique specialist in the modern NFL. They are more pivotal in the placement of the laces than the holder, thousands of reps and knowing just how hard to spin the ball so that the laces end up facing the right direction is mostly his job. If you ever watch the McAfee show he has talked about it on numerous occasions... That's why long snappers have been added to the pro bowl
Is this the full video? Joe Judge gets cut off at the end there. Seems like the video is missing the rest of the Holder of the Year award content and any kind of wrap up or conclusion
That romo one still hurts... The life of a cowboys fan smh #nextyearisouryear 🙄 Also, as a kicker, I'm sure when they see the laces as they're about to kick the "laces out" thing has some psychological play to it.
Yeah, QBs are usually the holders at amateur /youth level since they are the players with the best hands and the punter is usually the kicker. It gives you also the advantage in orchestrating fake kicks, as you almost need the Quarterback for that.
Holders and long snappers are the two most underrated positions in all of sports.
If you don’t invest in a long snapper, you’re in for a world of trouble.
The long snapper has ONE job to do. That’s it. He doesn’t even have to worry about getting hit.

This just goes to show that even if a position isn’t flashy they’re still incredibly important to the team’s success.
I think the long snapper is one of the most important jobs in football.
