Another great reaction video: I think I prefer it when you talk over the action instead of stopping the play and starting it again, but, I guess that depends on the game play itself. Once again your detailed knowledge of the area threw an interesting light on the actual gameplay. Enjoyed this! Thanks

Thanks Paul that was great. They have more maps you might be interested in having a look at, carantan, Foy and st Marie du mont etc. You mentioned grenades, you normally get two but up to six if you progress as assault class.

Most games use Saving Private Ryan as a reference thats why it always looks wrong in the same way. Hell let loose developers did their homework. Of course they had to modifiy it a bit mostly because there are only 50 vs 50 players in a match. And yes Omaha Beach in this game is tough and brutal.

  • @timogeerties3487

Maybe the frames on the trenches are a visual clue for the players to notice "ah, there's a trench" and this as well as the too elaborate trenches, exposed bunkers, etc. just makes this game easier to "play"
And planes can be called by commander and players have to get the shells on the enemy themselves. Player-manned artillery

I always felt Omaha beach on this game didn’t feel “big” either, sure the map looks amazing and the scale is accurate, but with only 100 players you maybe have only a handful of players on a section of the beach at a time with little to no resistance, they should just scale down the map to one sector of Omaha where you have 100 players in one area, and add atmospheric shelling in the background, to give it that “large scale” DDAY feel, not to mention with the whole German team shooting at you on the beach it’ll really feel like DDay

Honestly, as someone who plays Hell Let Loose a ton, the spawns on the beach, aside from a few, are extremely unforgiving. Especially when you are playing with people who only want to charge and die the whole game. 😂

Trenches in game needs to be wide enough for players to pass each other. Else one player would block the whole trench.

Great video. For the authenticity, the server limit is 100 people. So realistic artillery coming over would have to be from those players. The odd plane comes in but your commander calls it in and there's also a limit. I can't wait for the day when we can have thousands on a server!

Was almost yelling at the screen in the beginning, it's not the east end of the beach but Charlie and Dog Green sectors on the far west end! The town is Vierville-sur-Mer. They made a 1 to 1 representation of that area that I would say is 80% accurate. These are great video's :)

I am curious what your thoughts are on the Omaha beach scene in the extended cut of the Big Red One film. Other than the obvious Vietnam war overtones of the narration, it seems much lower intensity to Saving Private Ryan or the video games since, but also has a more obvious reason for the lack of progress than The Longest day. The Longest day seems to me to make it look like one concrete obstacle and a machine gun had the whole beach pinned most of the day.

I was disappointed in The Big Red One when it first came out and watched it again several months ago. It has not aged that well, in my opinion. To be charitable, the budget was small as was the number of extras/soldiers. Fuller did the best he could in the pre-CGI era, I suppose.

    • @marks_sparks1
      @marks_sparks1 2 роки тому +2

@@davidk7324 the butchered original cut of The Big Red One did it no favours upon release. Thankfully, the restored scenes in the directors cut have helped fulfill Fullers vision of the war. Yes, I agree with you that it looks poor compared to Saving Private Ryan but SPR just changed the war film genre in one stroke (for better or worse). Everything before it will pale into insignificance.

This is a very good video for those of us who play the game👍 You get 2 frag grenades and 2 smoke grenades when you play as assault Paul. You are correct that it feels more like a commando raid than an invasion. That is probably a sacrifice the developers have to make to enable it to be within the parameters of what is graphically smooth and playable online.
I am so glad you commented on the goalposts on top of the trenches as I had no idea what they were.

The grenades were only 2 though. He get new grenades when he dies. The explosions gotta ordered by players and we can only have 100 players at a time so it wont ever be as busy as the real thing. Would sadly be too taxing on any gaming system.

One multiplayer game that has a Gold Beach level is Forgotten Hope 2, a modification for Battlefield 2. There's several gameplay videos, some by one of their own dev, Ts4ever, around.
Also they have an Omaha Beach map which is probably the most accurate in these games, I think!

  • @K-Nyne
    @K-Nyne Рік тому

By the way, while I appreciate the pretty accurate map in this game a lot, the Saving Private Ryan legacy can still be felt as this is ANOTHER game that chooses to recreate Dog Green sector. Just to put in perspective why that is a little annoying, I made a list.
WW2 games with somewhat accurate representations of Dog Green sector:
    -Forgotten Hope 2 (mod)
    -Darkest Hour '44-'45 (mod)
-Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of the West (mod)
    -Call of Duty 2 (mod)
-Men of War: Assault Squad 2 (mod)
    -Hell Let Loose
    -Post Scriptum (mod WIP)
    -Project Reality (mod)
WW2 games with somewhat accurate representations of other sectors at Omaha Beach:
    -F@cking none
You'll notice most of these are player-created mods, but that tells us even more of the influence on popular history that SPR still has.
I wish someone would let me play a game in the Fox or Easy sectors 🥲

For game fairness they restrict the bombing runs, you have to build up resources to be able to call it in. It would be easy mode if the invading team could repeatedly call in Bombers/Strafing runs.

Also I read something about forgotten hope 2 which is a mod for battlefield 2, this has one of the most accurate remakes maybe for d1 so far, although older than this engine its a very good one.

You get x2 granades, x2 smoke ones & a few bandages, what? The medics patch your ass in the field, they are lifesavers. As for the fire mechanics in this game are set in such a way that even suppression fire creates this bloom for the opposing sides which compels them to take cover. I myself am an adept machine gunner, let me tell you, suppression fire goes a long way in this game! If you are lucky to get a committed, seriouse team & enemy team, this game is a slow, intese, daunting, MADNESS! 😂
One time on a Stalingrad map, the people in the server were just perfect, 100ppl & the whole round was a pandemonius mindfuck! 🤣It took great coordintion to win.

Being a 100% multiplayer game, he’s reacting to what seems like a seeding game where it’s not fully populated. I’d like to see him react to a competitive match where the players have a proper plan and coordinate. His criticisms are mainly about immersion. The game essentially covers Dog green and dog white, they use real 1:1 topographical recreations from google earth and old declassified recon maps, so the environment is pretty dang close to the real deal. In terms of shells flying overhead, pak40’s on the beach, mg42 placement, and when certain things were blown open, the game doesn’t have environmental destruction so they essentially modelled it based on the aftermath, and your experience of what resistance you face on the beach hinges on how good the players are. A competitive game will have all sorts of MG’s placed properly, more field artillery, and usually, Allies never make it off the beach if the German team knows what they’re doing.

I've visited this area and I play this game and sometimes playing this map is just weird. While I understand your nit pics, there is so much that is needed to keep the game moving. The maps go from D-Day to Hurtgen Forest. To tailor tanks, uniforms to each map would kill the game. While they try to be accurate as possible, in the end it's still a game & everything is done to make it fun & flow. The truck is a supply truck & would be US.

In terms of grenades, it seems players can carry two of each kind. I haven't played the game, so I'm not sure.
Historically for the U.S. forces in the assault waves, at least on paper, were equipped at a minimum as follows:
Boat team leader (Officer) armed with an M1 carbine with at least five magazines and a trench knife. One fragmentation grenade, one smoke grenade, and six colored smoke grenades, and an SCR-536 handie talkie radio.
Five man rifle team, each man was armed with an M1 rifle with at least 22 clips, bayonet, one smoke grenade, and two fragmentation grenades, except for the man with an M7 launcher for his M1 rifle, he was to have one frag and ten rifle launched smoke grenades. The team also had two sections of Bangalore torpedo and two wire cutters.
Four man wire cutting team, each man was armed with an M1 rifle with at least 22 clips, bayonet, and one smoke grenade. Two men in the team had a Bangalore torpedo section and two had wire cutters.
Two two man BAR team, each consisting of an automatic rifleman with his BAR and twelve magazines (240 rounds), and an assistant with an M1 with 22 clips, and another 12 magazines for the BAR in an ammo bag.
Four man mortar team made up of a spotter with a carbine and five magazines, along with twelve mortar rounds. The gunner with the mortar, five mortar rounds and a pistol with three magazines. And assistant gunner with a carbine, five magazines, and twelve mortar rounds. And an ammo carrier with a carbine, five mags, and twelve mortar rounds.
Two two man bazooka teams, the rocketeers armed with a carbine, five magazines, and their bazooka with I'm assuming one bag containing three rockets (my source says four, but the bags were designed to hold three). Each of their loaders was armed with an M1 rifle with 22 clips and a bayonet, and carry two rocket bags, totaling six rockets for each loader.
The flamethrower team had the gunner armed with a flamethrower and a pistol with three magazines. His assistant carried five gallons of extra fuel plus a spare nitrogen tank, and was armed with an M1 rifle (22 clips and a bayonet), four smoke grenades and six fragmentation grenades, I'm assuming to aid in covering their slow approach and then with clearing the fortifications that the gunner had just fired into.
Five man demolition team, each man armed with an M1 rifle with 22 clips and a bayonet, one smoke grenade, two fragmentation grenades, and then divided up amongst the team three pole charges, seven pack charges, and quite a bit of TNT, primacord and detonators.
Finally the assistant boat team leader was armed with an M1, 22 clips and a bayonet, two smoke grenades, and eight fragmentation grenades.
So it seems most men were instructed to carry at least 1-2 fragmentation grenades and a smoke grenade, with the team leader carrying half a dozen colored smokes for signaling, and the assistant leader carrying a TON of frags (likely to resupply the men when clearing fortifications?)
Keep in mind, these were the prescribed load outs. There are many accounts of men who fought in the landings saying as they got ready, there were opened boxes of grenades and ammo and they were able to take what they wanted. Some men came ashore weighed down with four or more bandoleers of rifle ammo, and two ammo bags full of grenades and other ordnance they managed to procure that they thought would be useful.
I can attest that running up a sandy beach with a 19 pound BAR, 18 pounds of ammo, plus a pack, gas mask, water, etc SUCKS! I can't imagine trying to add more grenades and ammo, but quite a few vet's accounts say they did.
