LOL So many people here are debating how high Alfie can go. What that top note was. Meanwhile, he spends half this clip explaining to Matt he spent his time working on the bottom of his voice. Not to show off, but because that's what the songs and the character demanded. That's a true artist. It's the story and the music. And that's why his "Bring Him Home" goes straight to the heart.
I have yet to see someone do, in my opinion, Jean Valjean better than Alfie Boe. I watch the 25th anniversary now and I still get chills. His voice is not one you come across often, and he is absolutely amazing! Colm Wilkinson is right up there with him, but Alfie Boe is still my favorite.
@@kentahagiwara3006 ramin is awesome but he is definitely not a valjean. He's perfect for phantom, and he makes a great enjolras and plenty more, but not valjean
I am in LOVE with Alfie Boe! He seems like such a sweet, funny and kind person. Not to mention is a supremely handsome and beardy with a voice like a god. Also, it doesn't hurt that here he's wearing a soft gray t-shirt and track pants....could he look anymore delicious?! I think not. *swoon*
...it took me like 6hours to get Alfies little joke about "high baritone, drugged up tenor" 0:53. Didn't register the first time I heard it. Had to come back to watch again to be sure he said that...
Wierd to see Matt Lucas relatively shy and modest here when his character is so cruel and despicable (yet very entertaining). Despite this clip being short, Alfie Boe's tips were still very helpful
To set the record straight, Alfie went from TVR as a body shop apprentice mechanic to a year with D'Oyly Carte Opera Co working in the chorus on tour. He then went on scholarship NOT to a performing arts school but to the Royal College of Music where he got his degree having studied and sung opera. He then went on the National Opera Studio where he got his masters. Although Alfie hits a top C often (look at performances of Living Prayer, Che Gelida Manina) as stated by Alfie the top note in Les Mis is a high B at the end of 24601 which is the last bit of Who Am I. The note on the word Flight at the end of the prologue although startling because of the way it is sung, is not as high as a B. And to assume that a man who has a masters degree in music doesn't know what note he is singing, seems rather ludicrous. For more details read Alfie - My Story - it's all there.
@@cooperhoffman8303to be fair in the 25th Anniversary weirdly it is transposed to a high Bb, but in the most recent Staged Concert it’s back to normal with the high C so I just wonder whether it was transposed for another singer (like the Bishop) or whether with the 25th tour whether they just didn’t want to risk him tiring his voice doing a high C every time
The way Alfie sings it on stage, the highest note is the B at the end of Who Am I? I can't remember what note he hits at the end of Valjean's Soliloquy, but it's not as high as the B. I haven't watched the show in a while so my memory isn't perfect, but I'm fairly certain he's right. I'd expect him to be anyway, given that he's sung it so many times! :)
I'm a low bass and this makes me feel both good and bad about my voice. On one hand that low note is not at all low for me. On the other I could never ever hit that high note.
Nope, it's definitely a C, John Owen Jones and Ramin Karimloo both go to the D, which is (strictly speaking) correct as it within the chord. But I believe you're correct in saying that it's optional. I believe an F is what's written? Regardless, he still sings it, as such, a top C is his highest sustained note within the show.
@Nicole Coyne nono, not the bit at the end of valjean's soliloquy, the but where's he's like 'took the silver took my flight' after he first meets the Bishop which goes up to the high C
***** Although he hit a C, I'm pretty sure that it's written in as an A. I once saw the show live and heard it like that (I could be wrong, of course, he may just not have been able to hit the note well...it's hard to tell because the only two Valjeans I've heard legitimately hit an exact note are Alfie Boe and the man I saw live).
+MusiruneProductions sometimes the production changes the key of a particular song to make it easier for the actor to do it, keeping in mind that he has to do it 8 times a week
Actually the highest note valjean has to sing is the high C in the bit with the Bishop after he steals all the plates and shit lol Alfie what you doing
Oliver Turnbull this note is not actually a part of the script. You can change it to the way you can do it better, Alfie sang it and it was perfect like all he does. But some other Valjeans only screamed like Ramin and JOJ. Even many of them cut the note and don't hold it for the 6 seconds it requires. But yes, you are right this is the highest note.
From what I heard, Alfie didn't have a teacher. Apparently he worked in a car garage and sang along to opera on his CD player, and his coworkers encouraged him to go on.
Is his beard like the perfect beard? Or is it the perfect beard? Was your use of the word 'like' really necessary? Are you trying to confuse me or is your use of the English language poor?
I do not care for Lucas as Thenardier, not because he is "not dark enough", but because I cannot stand his voice!!! D: I saw the US tour of les mis last yr and the thenardier was better...
+Ruthie Klein He's supposed to be funny... But also dark. "Dog Eat Dog" is about how God is dead and how he survives by exploiting the misfortunes of others.
Connor J. Ouly Agreed, but I do believe he has his merits. It's just that if you compare him to barry james or alun armstrong he comes off flat. He's just focused more on the comical while not really emphasizing the disgusting nitty gritty of a street rat willing to do whatever to survive.
rowyne madayag I'd say that the more comic the better, since that makes the contrast between the Thenardiers and the rest of the musical stronger, and thus more relieving. Plus that I think "Dog eats the dog" was dark enough
lol I like his speaking voice. The accent sometimes throws me, but the voice is soft and resonant. And he has the sweetest laugh.
Alfie's voice is just unfair. Natural talent plus hard work. There is no substitute.

What a cool clip.
i guess we'll never know the tips from his teacher.. :(
"where will she end this child without a friend." at 4:00
the word "friend" is middle C....and that's low for him...wow!
That's a low C, not middle

Alfie! How could you forget about your top C in the prologue?
If you really listen to stage versions (not concerts), that C is more of a yelp than a legitimate note.
