  • London and Broadway's original Jean Valjean, Colm Wilkinson, performed the role of the Bishop for a special performance of LES MISÉRABLES Saturday evening, January 11 in Toronto at the Princess of Wales Theatre alongside Broadway's next Valjean, Ramin Karimloo, who will star in Cameron Mackintosh's new production of the legendary musical beginning March 1 at the Imperial Theatre. Wilkinson passed the torch -- and the silver candlesticks - to Karimloo in a special benefit performance for five different Toronto charities: Casey House, Covenant House, Ernestine's, The Franciscan Missionary Sisters for Africa and Theatre 20. Wilkinson and Karimloo brought down the house with a special curtain call duet of "Bring Him Home."

Fun trivia time - ALW was originally writing the role of The Phantom with Colm Wilkinson in mind, but then Colm took the role of Jean Valjean in the London production of Les Miserables, which was the first English language production of that show. "Bring Him Home" wasn't in the original French version; it was written specifically to take advantage of Colm's incredible high range. Colm Wilkinson DID go on to play The Phantom in the Toronto production, along with Rebecca Caine, who had played Cosette in London, as Christine. And an adolescent boy from Toronto named Ramin Karimloo went to see that show god knows how many times, and decided that he was going to be in musicals one day too.

Ramin has a younger man's power and control, but Colm's voice has a depth and richness that cannot be imitated. The one thing that I feel Colm has over any other performer in both Les Mis and Phantom is his ability to convey the psychological truth of the moment in any given scene. Some people think that the choices Colm makes are too broad, but personally, musical theatre is supposed to be heightened to the threshold of credibility, to play the emotional truth of each moment and no one has ever done it so well. With all due respect to Ramin, Colm is Val Jean, and (with respect to Crawford and Ramin) he is the Phantom.

Two Phantoms and two Valjeans. Karimloo is a great in his own right and stands next to Colm as the best Valjeans I've heard and he and Sierra Boggess were epic together in PoTO. This duet is amazing. Love the respect for Colm he showed. If Ramin can learn to feel the songs the way Colm does he'll be just as legendary.

Ramon Karimloo makes a good Valjean but after nearly 30 years Colm Wilkinson's still got it. My hate goes off to the both of them. This was an awesome performance by two great singers and actors!!! Just fantastic! Truly fantastic!!!

I had the pleasure of seeing Colm Wilkinson as Jean Valjean 33 years ago and he has captivated me in the role ever since ... and he'll always be the original and best as far as I'm concerned ... but damn, Ramin is a very close second!

Colm Wilkinson always seems so modest, humble and appreciative when he sings and when the audience applauds. It's clear he appreciate the audience and doesn't take his fans for granted. Nice change from many of the egotistical celebrities out there! Ramin is an excellent Valjean but one thing I don't like about his make-up/costume is that it hides his normal adorable self. The make-up is so good, it's hard to tell he's Ramin.

So does the Phantom makeup, and he is *damn* sexy in that role!
Ramin seems to be learning the same beautiful humility from his mentor as well. What a gift, to see and hear the legend and his protege together!

He NEVER fails to bring tears to my eyes.

I liked Colm when I first heard him from my home in County Westmeath representing Ireland In the Eurovision song contest in 1978 in 'Born to Sing'. Not only did I love his singing but I loved his dressing style. My poor Mother was in shock with my taste back then. I have been in love with his voice and personaility ever since. This is from a farming child from Westmeath.

They are both beyond wonderful. To me, Colm will always be Valjean, just as Ramin will always be the Phantom, but both can do almost anything. And how humble of Ramin to step back and let Colm have the final note. You don't see that kind of humility often.

Phil Cx having said that, the crowd was so enthused that night, it was difficult for any amount of appreciation to be contained, when Colm walked on stage, the crowd erupted, even when they announce the substitutions before the show started the crowd cheard, I think most of us were hoping for more than one song at the encore, but we all truly enjoyed the experience of see Colm on stage again with Les Mis,

no, traditionally Fantine and Eponine are at his death, I think replacing Eponine with the Bishop was done for the first time in the film

Technically i don't see Ramin as legend in training, more like he's taking the new place for Colm and all the other original Valjean's and he's going to change the musical history and make something very beautiful and brilliant out of his career. And also don't forget he became a new legendary Phantom as well (and Colm being my favorite original phantom as well) lolzx but Ramin is truly amazing and so is Colm, I know that he made the original Valjean's very proud!
