PB Chasing! Even Splits York 5km - Below Freezing but some Incredible Running!

  • I'm a big fan of the Leeds 5km Series so have been intrigued by the York 5km Series. I booked the February Race but had to defer as I had just had my wisdom tooth pulled out. The weather was awful! So much snow had fallen in Leeds that I was convinced that the race would be cancelled... but York didn't get a single flake! So the race was on and it's been a while since I properly raced 5km so I was excited!
    I didn't warm up despite the sub zero temperatures, and I was filming, so far from ideal in terms of running max speed but I was super surprised by my result! It was an incredibly fast race and I was back of the pack but that felt pretty exciting! I'd totally recommend this race, or Heslington parkrun (although congestion might make parkrun PBs difficult as it's a fairly busy one) if you are chasing a 5km PB.
    Definitely worth the trip over to York for!
    Happy running,
    Nicola :)

    Great video Nicola. Looks like you guys up north got the worst of the cold and snow this time. Where I live on the outskirts of London, we got a light covering of snow overnight but it turned to rain by mid morning and snow all gone by early afternoon. I did a parkrun recently on a pretty fast course in 22.03 so looking to better that at a 5K race in London I've entered at the end of this month. 5K's are painful but I prefer them to the longer races. Next 5K you do, try and get a 10 minute or so warm up before hand maybe followed by a few strides to get your heart rate up and I'm sure you'll get your PB.

      I know right?! I totally intended to warm up but was busy sorting Poppy out and I was a little worried leaving her in the car but she was insisting because the air was so cold she said it hurt bless her! Plus we were at a venue she's not super familiar with... She's been to Brownlee hundreds of times but only twice to York so I was sorting her out making sure she knew where the toilets were etc. Then I blinked and the race was about to start! Single parent problems 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣 I'd totally planned to warm up in those temperatures... BUT... it gives me so much confidence that I can have a decent run with no warm up 😃 gives me a plan for next time 🏃‍♀️

      Yeah... I need to get Poppy at a playdate and then I could focus on my run, get a decent warm up done, ditch the camera and I reckon I could PB now which is so exciting! I've not really been doing much speed work but I've been doing a lot more strength work than usual. Nice to know it's paying off! 😃🏃‍♀️

    @vickyshaw1709 Рік тому

    Loved this video and well done on the time. Definitely doable beating your PB !! Do you feel comfortable leaving Poppy in the car ? I sometimes wonder about taking my 2 boys (11 and 8) to things like this but when it's cold it puts me off.

    • @NicolaRuns
      @NicolaRuns  Рік тому +1

      Comfortable is an interesting phrase. I wouldn't say I feel entirely comfortable with it at a venue she's unfamiliar with. That's why I didn't get a warm up as I was sorting Poppy out and didn't want to leave her. I think with all things as our kids grow up we have to try to cut the apron strings. I feel uncomfortable every time she goes to the corner shop alone... But I know I need to let her do it. So it was more that I respected her decision to stay in the car, I trust her to make good decisions and I try to trust and believe that anything bad is very very unlikely to happen. Single parenting is very hard and we have to navigate these waters 🤷🏻‍♀️🙃 I don't think I'd feel as comfortable leaving 2 kids... Just in case they argued or whatever and 1 wanted to storm off. It's a level of unpredictability that you don't have with 1 child. Poppy makes a little nest in the back of the car and sits and reads. But... Once your 8 year old is 11 then I'd probably leave them if it were me! At 11 they can parkrun on their own... I mean TBF at 8 they can go swimming on their own so 🤷🏻‍♀️ Each to their own. There's no right or wrong answer. If you said you left your 2 at 8 and 11 I'd be like 'cool, it's good having sensible kids' because only you know if they're ready or not 🥰 sorry for the HUGELY long answer 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣

    • @vickyshaw1709
      @vickyshaw1709 Рік тому

      @@NicolaRuns no need to apologise for the long answer. Thank you for taking the time to respond. I totally agree leaving 2 kids has more potential issues. As you say it is entirely dependent on whether your child is comfortable being left. So many minefields and judgy people that we never know what's the right thing to do although ultimately we know our own children best and know what they are capable of. Keep up the fab work anyway. You're setting a great example for Poppy 🙂

    • @NicolaRuns
      @NicolaRuns  Рік тому +1

      @@vickyshaw1709 thank you 🤗 yes people and their opinions can go and tell someone who cares 😜 life is too short and 99% of the time parents are desperately trying our very best for our kids so I have no time for people who are judgy. Parenting is hard enough without that worry! Lol Poppy is so super confident that when I go to the gym she says "Mum, take your time, maybe go for a run as well too" because she absolutely LOVES being at home on her own and always wants me to be longer. I'll sprint to the gym, quick work out, sprint home totally panicking and get home to Poppy saying "nooooooooo, I thought you'd be longer" 🤣 she feels super grown up and loves time on her own!

    Nothing like it when you clock at about 4K that you could PB (and be sick) and go for it - 9 times out of 10 you're just outside it, so fingers crossed your 10th time is coming up Nicola.
