  • Sony unexpectedly released the Sony Alpha a7R Mark IV just this past week. I was fortunate to have been invited by Sony to come to New York to get some hands on time with the camera.
    This is my first impression.

    Seems like a terrific camera; however, for my current needs, I am keeping my A7R III as my main camera and A7R II as my backup. Thank you for doing this.

    Fantastic, reasonable and balanced review. I’ve watched half a dozen reviews of the Sony 7r IV and I thought your review was the best. Thank you.

    I looked at the A7R4 as it came out before the A9II. I thought about all those mega pixels but in the end went for the a9 for its faster focus speed and low light capabilities .

      I think hell might freeze over before Canon gets around to updating the 5D :) Took them 5 years to go from the 5DIII to the 5DIV

    Hi Juan, thank you for putting in the time to make this very good video. Currently I am shooting on the A9 as it fits most of my needs (Wedding/Portraiture/Sports and Wildlife). But I have found that I would like more resolution at certain times. So I am thinking about adding either the A7R3 or the A7R4. I get the feeling that you feel there is a pretty good improvement in autofocus with the A7R4 over the A7R3?

    • @PhotoTherapyMotivationWisdom

      Thanks for the kind words. There is HUGE improvement on AF in the a7RIV over the a7RIII. An incredible improvement for sure.

    Depends on how the Autofocus will perform. Benchmark for me is the Sony A9. If the performance is close, especially on tracking, then I am into it. Otherwise better no. Pixel Shift I don't need, this function anyway not useable as in reality we mostly have even small movements in the scene.

    • @markrigg6623
      @markrigg6623 4 роки тому

      Doesnt have the A F performance of the A9 but is still better than Riii. Has much better image quality however. So there's a trade off which ever one you choose. Maybe wait for A9 ii.

    Actually, if you compare the A7RIV with the A7III you get 943mm instead of 600mm. You have to divide the pixel size by one and other. So A7RIV = 3.76µm A7III = 5.91µm ---> 5.91/3.76=1.57x and 600x1.57=943mm. Pick any sensor aps-c, full frame, 1" doesn't matter, just divide the pixel size and you get the 'real' cropfactor based on RESOLUTION. A general crop factor of 1.5x is based on sensor SIZE.

    Awesome review. Just curies about the AF compare to a73. Most of the viewers compare r4 to r3, but beating r3 is a easy job. What about a73~~~

    • @JuanPons

      I am not sure what you mean, from my experience the AF on the r3 is better than the one on the a73.

      @@oldboysadventures9457 You are right, I got the models mixed up in my head. I have not compared the r4 with the 7III, but considering the AF on the r4 is not that significantly better then the r3 I would expect the 7III to outperform the r4. Apologies for the confusion.

    How is the A7R4 with the 200600? I'm hearing mixed reviews...some saying 100400 is a better combo? Very frustrating as I just picked up 200600 in anticipation of the A7R4. Thanks

    • @njrtech

      Furthermore do we need 600mm when you can crop in from 400mm??

    • @JuanPons
      @JuanPons  4 роки тому

      I think the 200-600 performs about the same as the 100-400 with the a7r IV. Sure you can crop from 400 to reach the equivalent field of view as a 600, but you will lose quite a few pixels.

      @@JuanPons I am hearing the 100400 out resolves the 200600 if you crop in tight, you can see this

    • @JuanPons
      @JuanPons  4 роки тому

      If you look at my video where I compare the two you can see that in certain situations one can out resolve the the and vice versa. In any case the difference is very Very small, So I would go with the focal length that best suits your shooting style and don’t obsess about which lens outresolves the other in pixel peeping comparisons. Both lenses can produce amazing images, and the photographers skill level is what matters most in this case, not which lens is a tiny bit sharper than the next. I have been shooting with the a7R IV and the 200-600 for a week in Grand Tetons and Yellowstone testing out the set up and I can tell you without a doubt this is an amazing combination, Make sure to check out my next video that should be out Monday where I show the images I made. My advice, focus more on your skill and focus less on the minute details of the gear. Hope that helps.

    No one mentions the fact that its 10fps is only in 12 bit raw and hence its dynamic range will be compromised compared to the 15 stops that Sony quote.

    • @JuanPons
      @JuanPons  4 роки тому

      I mention the fps in the first 2 minutes of the video. DR is not ALL about bit depth. Until we have good tools to process the raw files we won't know how much DR there really is.

    • @markrigg6623
      @markrigg6623 4 роки тому

      @@JuanPons No dynamic range isn't all about bit depth. The design of the sensor provides it's base but on all the previous models lower bit depth then detracted from that. You also get some weird edge artifacts with 12 bit in some high contrast situations on all previous versions. I'd love it if this was found not to be the case on the new model however!!!

    This form "factor" buisiness just sounds silly. It has some specific uses but people just repeat it like they are parrots most of the time. Makes me laugh. A bit like color "science" and "I P".
